Optical Reading And Playing Of Sound Signals From Vinyl Records, Arnold Hensman, Kevin Casey Oct 2007

Optical Reading And Playing Of Sound Signals From Vinyl Records, Arnold Hensman, Kevin Casey

Conference Papers

While advanced digital music systems such as compact disk players and MP3 have become the standard in sound reproduction technology, critics claim that conversion to digital often results in a loss of sound quality and richness. For this reason, vinyl records remain the medium of choice for many audiophiles involved in specialist areas. The waveform cut into a vinyl record is an exact replica of the analogue version from the original source. However, while some perceive this media as reproducing a more authentic quality then its digital counterpart, there is an absence a safe playback system. Contact with the stylus …

A Two-Phase Approach To Interactivity Enhancement For Large-Scale Distributed Virtual Environments, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Suiping Zhou Oct 2007

A Two-Phase Approach To Interactivity Enhancement For Large-Scale Distributed Virtual Environments, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Suiping Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed virtual environments (DVEs) are distributed systems that allow multiple geographically distributed clients (users) to interact simultaneously in a computer-generated, shared virtual world. Applications of DVEs can be seen in many areas nowadays, such as online games, military simulations, collaborative designs, etc. To support large-scale DVEs with real-time interactions among thousands or even more distributed clients, a geographically distributed server architecture (GDSA) is generally needed, and the virtual world can be partitioned into many distinct zones to distribute the load among the servers. Due to the geographic distributions of clients and servers in such architectures, it is essential to efficiently …

Building National Digital Infrastructure: A Case Study Of Semiconductor Complex Limited, Deepak Kappor Jul 2007

Building National Digital Infrastructure: A Case Study Of Semiconductor Complex Limited, Deepak Kappor

Business Review

The digital revolution and the rapid technology developments thereafter created a real danger of the modem world getting divided into a new type of 'digital-haves and digital-have not's'. It was feared that developing countries like India may not be able to reap the benefits of the 'information age' because of the ever widening gap in technology and relevant infrastructure. As a strategic step to bridge the growing digital divide between India and the technologically advanced economies, the Government of India (GO I) decided to set up Semiconductor Complex Limited (SCL) in the year 1983 to develop Indian capabilities in the …

Dynamic Routing Structure For An Rti Taking An Evolutionary Approach Towards Optimization, Matthew Ryan Davis Jul 2007

Dynamic Routing Structure For An Rti Taking An Evolutionary Approach Towards Optimization, Matthew Ryan Davis

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Runtime Infrastructure (RTI) is the common communication framework that High Level Architecture (HLA) simulations incorporate to exchange data. By abstracting the network communication layer from simulation, a common protocol for information exchange is achieved, allowing any RTI- based simulation to exchange data with any other. Such commonality can bring a limitation upon the network infrastructure, enforcing all federates to agree on the same communication policy. While this static network structure is not always the case, an optimal choice would be to adhere to the dynamic properties of a network. Static network configurations deny federates the ability to dynamically avoid …

Nesting System With Quantization And Knowledge Base Applied, Leszek Koszalka, Grzegorz Chmaj Apr 2007

Nesting System With Quantization And Knowledge Base Applied, Leszek Koszalka, Grzegorz Chmaj

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Nesting algorithms deal with placing two dimensional shapes on the given canvas. In this paper a binary way of solving the nesting problem is proposed. Geometric shapes are quantized into binary form, which is used to operate on them. After finishing nesting they are converted back into original geometrical form. Investigations showed, that there is a big influence of quantization accuracy for the nesting effect. However, greater accuracy results with longer time of computation. The proposed knowledge base system is able to strongly reduce the computational time.

What Should Be In A Human Behavior Representation Federation Object Model For High Level Architecture, Gurkan Haznedaroglu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Modeling and Simulation (M&S) can assist in evaluating scenarios and enhancing the performance of operational systems. Fully integrated use of MBS can enable the evaluation of the effectiveness of proposed equipment or software in realistic simulated environments and can provide an assessment of the impacts of specific equipment or capabilities on battle outcomes. Every level, from strategic planners, technology experts, operations research analysts, weapons systems designers and users, testers, maintainers, and cost analysts, has to be interactively involved to maximize the benefits of this approach. Human behavior is a very important part of the M&S process. Especially in constructive simulations, …

Exploring Hardware Based Primitives To Enhance Parallel Security Monitoring In A Novel Computing Architecture, Stephen D. Mott Mar 2007

Exploring Hardware Based Primitives To Enhance Parallel Security Monitoring In A Novel Computing Architecture, Stephen D. Mott

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores how hardware-based primitives can be implemented to perform security-related monitoring in real-time, offer better security, and increase performance compared to software-based approaches. In doing this, we propose a novel computing architecture, derived from a contemporary shared memory architecture, that facilitates efficient security-related monitoring in real-time, while keeping the monitoring hardware itself safe from attack. This architecture is flexible, allowing security to be tailored based on the needs of the system. We have developed a number of hardware-based primitives that fit into this architecture to provide a wide array of monitoring capabilities. A number of these primitives provide …

Filling The Ontology Space For Coalition Battle Management Language, Charles Turnitsa, Curtis Blais, Andreas Tolk Jan 2007

Filling The Ontology Space For Coalition Battle Management Language, Charles Turnitsa, Curtis Blais, Andreas Tolk

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The Coalition Battle Management Language is a language for representing and exchanging plans, orders, and reports across live, constructive and robotic forces in multi-service, multi-national and multi-organizational operations. Standardization efforts in the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization seek to define this language through three parallel activities: (1) specify a sufficient data model to unambiguously define a set of orders using the Joint Command, Control, and Consultation Information Exchange Data Model (JC3IEDM) as a starting point; (2) develop a formal grammar (lexicon and production rules) to formalize the definition of orders, requests, and reports; (3) develop a formal battle management ontology to …

Directflow: A Domain-Specific Language For Information-Flow Systems, Andrew P. Black, Chuan-Kai Lin Jan 2007

Directflow: A Domain-Specific Language For Information-Flow Systems, Andrew P. Black, Chuan-Kai Lin

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Programs that process streams of information are commonly built by assembling reusable information-flow components. In some systems the components must be chosen from a pre-defined set of primitives; in others the programmer can create new custom components using a general-purpose programming language. Neither approach is ideal: restricting programmers to a set of primitive components limits the expressivity of the system, while allowing programmers to define new components in a general-purpose language makes it difficult or impossible to reason about the composite system. We advocate defining information-flow components in a domain-specific language (DSL) that enables us to infer the properties of …

The result will include the proposed framework and the analyses of …

Byzantine Fault Tolerant Coordination For Web Services Atomic Transactions, Wenbing Zhao Jan 2007

Byzantine Fault Tolerant Coordination For Web Services Atomic Transactions, Wenbing Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present the mechanisms needed for Byzantine fault tolerant coordination of Web services atomic transactions. The mechanisms have been incorporated into an open-source framework implementing the standard Web services atomic transactions specification. The core services of the framework, namely, the activation service, the registration service, the completion service, and the distributed commit service, are replicated and protected with our Byzantine fault tolerance mechanisms. Such a framework can be useful for many transactional Web services that require high degree of security and dependability.

Research outputs pre 2011

A novel sampled grating for high-resolution, highspeed signal processing is presented. Simulation based on Sinc2 sampled and rational sampled fiber grating modeling show that a large number of sub-ps time delay steps are attainable, corresponding to a sampling frequency in excess of 1THz. Design method is described for deriving sampling functions that meet specific true-time-delay profile requirements.

Success? The Impact Of Involving Customers In E-Commerce Development, Julian Terry, Craig Standing Jan 2007

Success? The Impact Of Involving Customers In E-Commerce Development, Julian Terry, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

In e-commerce, customers have become Information System users. In this environment of non-mandatory usage, remote, untrained users need to quickly feel comfortable and satisfied with a site encounter. Throughout the literature for four decades, a commonly cited factor pertaining to system success has been user participation in the systems development process. Among other things this is likely to lead to increased user satisfaction and the perceived usefulness of the application. This study uses findings from thirty cases of recently completed e-commerce sites in which project leaders accounts of customer participation in e-commerce development activities are analysed, along with their perceptions …

Fault And Defect Tolerant Computer Architectures: Reliable Computing With Unreliable Devices, George R. Roelke Iv Sep 2006

Fault And Defect Tolerant Computer Architectures: Reliable Computing With Unreliable Devices, George R. Roelke Iv

Theses and Dissertations

This research addresses design of a reliable computer from unreliable device technologies. A system architecture is developed for a "fault and defect tolerant" (FDT) computer. Trade-offs between different techniques are studied and yield and hardware cost models are developed. Fault and defect tolerant designs are created for the processor and the cache memory. Simulation results for the content-addressable memory (CAM)-based cache show 90% yield with device failure probabilities of 3 x 10(-6), three orders of magnitude better than non fault tolerant caches of the same size. The entire processor achieves 70% yield with device failure probabilities exceeding 10(-6). The required …

A Multilane Pipelined Architecture For Real Time Enhancement Of Color Video Streams, Adam Redd Livingston Apr 2006

A Multilane Pipelined Architecture For Real Time Enhancement Of Color Video Streams, Adam Redd Livingston

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Video stream enhancement is a key fixture in a wide variety of applications from video surveillance, automatic navigation, medical imagery, to facial/object recognition systems. When a video stream contains non-uniform lighting it can be difficult to obtain what is in the darker regions without over enhancing brighter regions. The Adaptive and Integrated Neighborhood Dependant Approach for Nonlinear Enhancement (AINDANE) algorithm combines a tunable nonlinear transfer function, convolution by a multi-scale Gaussian kernel, and tunable contrast enhancement to address this problem for a single image. Luminance values are tuned based on the global cumulative distribution function (CDF) of an image. Contrast …

Post Register Allocation Spill Code Optimization, Christopher Lupo, Kent Wilken Mar 2006

Post Register Allocation Spill Code Optimization, Christopher Lupo, Kent Wilken

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A highly optimized register allocator should provide an efficient placement of save/restore code for procedures that contain calls. This paper presents a new approach to placing callee-saved save and restore instructions that generalizes Chow's shrink-wrapping technique (Chow 1988). An efficient, profile-guided, hierarchical spill code placement algorithm is used to analyze the structure of a procedure to calculate the minimum dynamic execution count locations to place callee-saved save and restore code. The algorithm is implemented in the Gnu Compiler Collection and has been tested on the SPEC CPU2000 Integer Benchmark suite. Results show that the technique reduces the number of dynamic …

A Tabu Search Algorithm To Minimize The Makespan For The Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem With Setup Times, Magdy Helal, Ghaith Rabadi, Ameer Al-Salem Jan 2006

A Tabu Search Algorithm To Minimize The Makespan For The Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem With Setup Times, Magdy Helal, Ghaith Rabadi, Ameer Al-Salem

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper we propose a tabu search implementation to solve the unrelated parallel machines scheduling problem with sequence- and machine- dependent setup times to minimize the schedules makespan. The problem is NP-hard and finding an optimal solution efficiently is unlikely. Therefore, heuristic techniques are more appropriate to find near-optimal solutions. The proposed tabu search algorithm uses two phases of perturbation schemes: the intra-machine perturbation, which optimizes the sequence of jobs on the machines, and the inter-machine perturbation, which balances the assignment of the jobs to the machines. We compare the proposed algorithm to an existing one that addressed the …

Efficient Scheduling For Sdmg Cioq Switches, Mei Yang, S. Q. Zheng Jan 2006

Efficient Scheduling For Sdmg Cioq Switches, Mei Yang, S. Q. Zheng

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Combined input and output queuing (CIOQ) switches are being considered as high-performance switch architectures due to their ability to achieve 100% throughput and perfectly emulate output queuing (OQ) switch performance with a small speedup factor S. To realize a speedup factor S, a conventional CIOQ switch requires the switching fabric and memories to operate S times faster than the line rate. In this paper, we propose to use a CIOQ switch with space-division multiplexing expansion and grouped input/output ports (SDMG CIOQ switch for short) to realize speedup while only requiring the switching fabric and memories to operate at the line …

Parameter Inference Of Queueing Models For It Systems Using End-To-End Measurements, Laura Wynter, Cathy H. Xia, Fan Zhang Jan 2006

Parameter Inference Of Queueing Models For It Systems Using End-To-End Measurements, Laura Wynter, Cathy H. Xia, Fan Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As Information Technology (IT) matures and expands in the scope of available applications, IT systems increase at a fascinating rate in both size and complexity. For example, today, a typical Web service hosting center may have hundreds of nodes and dozens of different applications simultaneously running on it. Each of the nodes in turn has often multiple processors and layered caches. These nodes make use of both local and shared storage systems. The size and complexity of such systems make performance modeling much more difficult, if at all tractable. Detailed modeling, fine tuning and accurate analysis can be carried out …

Coalition Battle Management Language (C-Bml) Study Group Final Report, Major Kevin Galvin, Mike Hieb, Andreas Tolk, Charles Turnitsa, Curtis Blais, James Montgomery

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Interoperability across Modeling and Simulation (M&S) and Command and Control (C2) systems continues to be a significant problem for today's warfighters. M&S is well-established in military training, but it can be a valuable asset for planning and mission rehearsal if M&S and C2 systems were able to exchange information, plans, and orders more effectively. To better support the warfighter with M&S based capabilities, an open standards-based framework is needed that establishes operational and technical coherence between C2 and M&S systems.

Dynamic Voltage Scaling Techniques For Power Efficient Video Decoding, Ben Lee, Eriko Nurvitadhi, Reshma Dixit, Chansu Yu, Myungchul Kim Oct 2005

Dynamic Voltage Scaling Techniques For Power Efficient Video Decoding, Ben Lee, Eriko Nurvitadhi, Reshma Dixit, Chansu Yu, Myungchul Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a comparison of power-aware video decoding techniques that utilize dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). These techniques reduce the power consumption of a processor by exploiting high frame variability within a video stream. This is done through scaling of the voltage and frequency of the processor during the video decoding process. However, DVS causes frame deadline misses due to inaccuracies in decoding time predictions and granularity of processor settings used. Four techniques were simulated and compared in terms of power consumption, accuracy, and deadline misses. In addition, this paper proposes the frame-data computation aware (FDCA) technique, which is …

The Case For Thoroughly Testing Complex System Dynamic Models, Wayne Wakeland, Megan Hoarfrost Jul 2005

The Case For Thoroughly Testing Complex System Dynamic Models, Wayne Wakeland, Megan Hoarfrost

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

In order to determine whether model testing is as useful as suggested by modeling experts, the full battery of model tests recommended by Forrester, Senge, Sterman, and others was applied retrospectively to a complex previously-published system dynamics model. The time required to carry out each type of test was captured, and the benefits that resulted from applying each test was determined subjectively. The resulting benefit to cost ratios are reported. These ratios suggest that rather than focusing primarily on sensitivity testing, modelers should consider other types of model tests such as extreme condition tests and family member tests. The study …

Programmable Process Flow Networks, Filip D. Cuckov Apr 2005

Programmable Process Flow Networks, Filip D. Cuckov

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A model that introduces programmability to processes occurring in a cargo terminal simulation through the use of a process language is presented in this thesis. The model provides a means for a straight-forward definition, and redefinition of changing processes, their incorporation in the simulation architecture and efficient execution. The model was built to investigate a solution for transforming the cargo terminal simulation CPortS into a process-oriented simulation without hard-coded processes. The approach taken separates the system into an architecture and a set of processes which utilize and interact with the architecture's resources and infrastructure. The processes that take place within …

Creating Software [Sic] Environments On An M-Node Beowulf Cluster To Execute Discrete-Event Simulations, Jermaine Fitz-Gerald Headley Apr 2005

Creating Software [Sic] Environments On An M-Node Beowulf Cluster To Execute Discrete-Event Simulations, Jermaine Fitz-Gerald Headley

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes the development of a software tool that facilitates the creation of software environments that make a simulation tool execute k replications of an application program on several nodes of an M-node Beowulf cluster. It is assumed that each cluster-node consists of p processors. The p processors that are contained in the master cluster-node are termed master processors, and the p processors that are contained in a slave cluster-node are termed slave processors. The slave processors are used to execute the replications, while the master processors are dedicated to schedule the replications and process other housekeeping chores. For …
