Rapport: Semantic-Sensitive Namespace Management In Large-Scale File Systems, Yu Hua, Hong Jiang, Yifeng Zhu, Dan Feng Apr 2010

Rapport: Semantic-Sensitive Namespace Management In Large-Scale File Systems, Yu Hua, Hong Jiang, Yifeng Zhu, Dan Feng

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Explosive growth in volume and complexity of data exacerbates the key challenge to effectively and efficiently manage data in a way that fundamentally improves the ease and efficacy of their use. Existing large-scale file systems rely on hierarchically structured namespace that leads to severe performance bottlenecks and renders it impossible to support real-time queries on multi-dimensional attributes. This paper proposes a novel semantic-sensitive scheme, called Rapport, to provide dynamic and adaptive namespace management and support complex queries. The basic idea is to build files’ namespace by utilizing their semantic correlation and exploiting dynamic evolution of attributes to support namespace management. …

Pretty Lights, Nicholas (Nick) Delmas, Matthew (Matt) Maniaci

Computer Engineering

Digital media players often include a visualization component that allows a user to watch a visualization synchronized to their music or videos. This project uses the visualization plugin API of an existing media playback program (WinAmp) but it displays its visuals using physical LED lights. Instead of outputting visuals to the computer screen, data is sent over USB to a micro controller that runs the LED lights. This project aims to give users a more visceral visual experience than traditional visualizations on the computer screen.

Using Decision Analysis To Select Facility Maintenance Management Information Systems, Marchello T. Graddy Mar 2010

Using Decision Analysis To Select Facility Maintenance Management Information Systems, Marchello T. Graddy

Theses and Dissertations

Maintenance organizations, charged with preserving the built environment, are receiving a shrinking portion of an organization’s operational budget to do its job. It has been demonstrated through various studies that efficiencies can be gained by implementing a maintenance management information system (MMIS). However, with so many choices available, maintenance organizations often select the wrong system. This research effort used value-focused thinking decision analysis to create a model based on values from the Air Force Civil Engineer career field. Data for values and weights were collected from official documents and interviews. The resulting model is highly flexible, allowing the ultimate decision-maker …

Flexible Computing Architecture For Real Time Skin Detection, Matthew P. Hornung Mar 2010

Flexible Computing Architecture For Real Time Skin Detection, Matthew P. Hornung

Theses and Dissertations

In both the Air Force and Search and Rescue Communities, there is a current need to detect and characterize persons. Existing methods use red-green-blue (RGB) imagery, but produce high false alarm rates. New technology in multi-spectral skin detection is better than the existing RGB methods, but lacks a control and processing architecture to make them efficient for real time problems. We hypothesize that taking a minimalistic approach to the software design, we can perform image preprocessing, feature computation, and skin detection in real time. A number of applications require accurate detection and characterization of persons, human measurement and signature intelligence …

Random Approach To Optimization Of Overlay Public-Resource Computing Systems, Grzegorz Chmaj, Krzysztof Walkowiak Mar 2010

Random Approach To Optimization Of Overlay Public-Resource Computing Systems, Grzegorz Chmaj, Krzysztof Walkowiak

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

The growing need for computationally demanding systems triggers the development of various network-oriented computing systems organized in a distributed manner. In this work we concentrate on one kind of such systems, i.e. public-resource computing systems. The considered system works on the top of an overlay network and uses personal computers and other relatively simple electronic equipment instead of supercomputers. We assume that two kinds of network flows are used to distribute the data in the public-resource computing systems: unicast and peer-to-peer. We formulate an optimization model of the system. After that we propose random algorithms that optimize jointly the allocation …

A Self-Organizing Neural Architecture Integrating Desire, Intention And Reinforcement Learning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Yu-Hong Feng, Yew-Soon Ong Mar 2010

A Self-Organizing Neural Architecture Integrating Desire, Intention And Reinforcement Learning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Yu-Hong Feng, Yew-Soon Ong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a self-organizing neural architecture that integrates the features of belief, desire, and intention (BDI) systems with reinforcement learning. Based on fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART), the proposed architecture provides a unified treatment for both intentional and reactive cognitive functionalities. Operating with a sense-act-learn paradigm, the low level reactive module is a fusion ART network that learns action and value policies across the sensory, motor, and feedback channels. During performance, the actions executed by the reactive module are tracked by a high level intention module (also a fusion ART network) that learns to associate sequences of actions …

Coset: Cooperative Set Last Level Caches, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad Seth Feb 2010

Coset: Cooperative Set Last Level Caches, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad Seth

School of Computing: Technical Reports

The speed gap between processors and DRAM remains a crit-ical performance bottleneck for contemporary computer systems, which necessitates an effective management of last level caches (LLC) to minimize expensive off-chip accesses. However, because all sets in a conventional set-associative cache design are statically assigned an equal number of blocks, the LLC capacity utilization can drastically diminish when the cache actually exhibits non-uniform capacity demands across the sets. To reveal the wide exis-tence of set-level non-uniformity of capacity demand in real appli-cations, this technical report first establishes an accurate metric for measuring individual sets’ capacity demands by developing a group of …

Using Simulation Systems For Decision Support, Andreas Tolk Jan 2010

Using Simulation Systems For Decision Support, Andreas Tolk

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

This chapter describes the use of simulation systems for decision support in support of real operations, which is the most challenging application domain in the discipline of modeling and simulation. To this end, the systems must be integrated as services into the operational infrastructure. To support discovery, selection, and composition of services, they need to be annotated regarding technical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, dynamic, and conceptual categories. The systems themselves must be complete and validated. The data must be obtainable, preferably via common protocols shared with the operational infrastructure. Agents and automated forces must produce situation adequate behavior. If these requirements …

When Discrete Meets Differential: Assessing The Stability Of Structure From Small Motion, Wen-Yan Lin, Geok-Choo Tan, Loong-Fah Cheong Jan 2010

When Discrete Meets Differential: Assessing The Stability Of Structure From Small Motion, Wen-Yan Lin, Geok-Choo Tan, Loong-Fah Cheong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We provide a theoretical proof showing that under a proportional noise model, the discrete eight point algorithm behaves similarly to the differential eight point algorithm when the motion is small. This implies that the discrete algorithm can handle arbitrarily small motion for a general scene, as long as the noise decreases proportionally with the amount of image motion and the proportionality constant is small enough. This stability result extends to all normalized variants of the eight point algorithm. Using simulations, we show that given arbitrarily small motions and proportional noise regime, the normalized eight point algorithms outperform their differential counterparts …

Crctol: A Semantic Based Domain Ontology Learning System, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan Jan 2010

Crctol: A Semantic Based Domain Ontology Learning System, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Domain ontologies play an important role in supporting knowledge‐based applications in the Semantic Web. To facilitate the building of ontologies, text mining techniques have been used to perform ontology learning from texts. However, traditional systems employ shallow natural language processing techniques and focus only on concept and taxonomic relation extraction. In this paper we present a system, known as Concept‐Relation‐Concept Tuple‐based Ontology Learning (CRCTOL), for mining ontologies automatically from domain‐specific documents. Specifically, CRCTOL adopts a full text parsing technique and employs a combination of statistical and lexico‐syntactic methods, including a statistical algorithm that extracts key concepts from a document collection, …

Transmitter Optimization In Multiuser Wireless Systems With Quality Of Service Constraints, Danda B. Rawat Jan 2010

Transmitter Optimization In Multiuser Wireless Systems With Quality Of Service Constraints, Danda B. Rawat

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation, transmitter adaptation for optimal resource allocation in wireless communication systems are investigated. First, a multiple access channel model is considered where many transmitters communicate with a single receiver. This scenario is a basic component of a. wireless network in which multiple users simultaneously access the resources of a wireless service provider. Adaptive algorithms for transmitter optimization to meet Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements in a distributed manner are studied. Second, an interference channel model is considered where multiple interfering transmitter-receiver pairs co-exist such that a given transmitter communicates with its intended receiver in the presence of interference from other …

Defending Privacy: The Development And Deployment Of A Darknet, Conor Mcmanamon, Fredrick Mtenzi Jan 2010

Defending Privacy: The Development And Deployment Of A Darknet, Conor Mcmanamon, Fredrick Mtenzi

Conference papers

New measures imposed by governments, Internet service providers and other third parties which threaten the state of privacy are also opening new avenues to protecting it. The unwarranted scrutiny of legitimate services such as file hosters and the BitTorrent protocol, once relatively unknown to the casual Internet user, is becoming more obvious. The darknet is a rising contender against these new measures and will preserve the default right to privacy of Internet users. A darknet is defined in the context of file sharing as a network which operates on top of another network such as the Internet for the purpose …

Performance Analysis Of Live-Virtual-Constructive And Distributed Virtual Simulations: Defining Requirements In Terms Of Temporal Consistency, Douglas D. Hodson Dec 2009

Performance Analysis Of Live-Virtual-Constructive And Distributed Virtual Simulations: Defining Requirements In Terms Of Temporal Consistency, Douglas D. Hodson

Theses and Dissertations

This research extends the knowledge of live-virtual-constructive (LVC) and distributed virtual simulations (DVS) through a detailed analysis and characterization of their underlying computing architecture. LVCs are characterized as a set of asynchronous simulation applications each serving as both producers and consumers of shared state data. In terms of data aging characteristics, LVCs are found to be first-order linear systems. System performance is quantified via two opposing factors; the consistency of the distributed state space, and the response time or interaction quality of the autonomous simulation applications. A framework is developed that defines temporal data consistency requirements such that the objectives …

Tailored Systems Architecture For Design Of Space Science And Technology Missions Using Dodaf V2.0, Nicholas J. Merski Dec 2009

Tailored Systems Architecture For Design Of Space Science And Technology Missions Using Dodaf V2.0, Nicholas J. Merski

Theses and Dissertations

The use of systems architecture, following a set of integrated descriptions from an architecture framework, has been well codified in Department of Defense acquisition and systems engineering. However, in the Space Science and Technology (S&T) community, this guidance and practice is not commonly adopted. This paper outlines an approach to leverage the changes made in DoD Architecture Framework 2.0 (DoDAF2.0), and the renewed emphasis on data and support to acquisition decision analysis. After decomposing the Space S&T design lifecycle into phases, design milestones and activities using process models, a set of DoDAF prescribed and Fit-for-Purpose views are constructed into a …

Anaglym: A Graphics Engine Providing Secure Execution Of Applications, Josh Holtrop Dec 2009

Anaglym: A Graphics Engine Providing Secure Execution Of Applications, Josh Holtrop

Masters Projects

"The Anaglym graphics engine uses the Lua programming language as the high-level language in which to interpret Anaglym applications. Applications running inside Anaglym are Lua scripts that have a particular environment exposed to them. By default, when Lua is embedded inside a C or C++ host application, no Lua functions are available to the hosted script. Lua functions must be exported by the host environment to be callable by a Lua script."

A Clustering Based Discretization For Supervised Learning, Ankit Gupta, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan Nov 2009

A Clustering Based Discretization For Supervised Learning, Ankit Gupta, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We address the problem of discretization of continuous variables for machine learning classification algorithms. Existing procedures do not use interdependence between the variables towards this goal. Our proposed method uses clustering to exploit such interdependence. Numerical results show that this improves the classification performance in almost all cases. Even if an existing algorithm can successfully operate with continuous variables, better performance is obtained if variables are first discretized. An additional advantage of discretization is that it reduces the overall time-complexity.

Analysis Of Tradeoffs Between Buffer And Qos Requirements In Wireless Networks, Raphael Rom, Hwee-Pink Tan Oct 2009

Analysis Of Tradeoffs Between Buffer And Qos Requirements In Wireless Networks, Raphael Rom, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we consider the scheduling problem where data packets from K input-flows need to be delivered to K corresponding wireless receivers over a heterogeneous wireless channel. Our objective is to design a wireless scheduler that achieves good throughput and fairness performance while minimizing the buffer requirement at each wireless receiver. This is a challenging problem due to the unique characteristics of the wireless channel. We propose a novel idea of exploiting both the long-term and short-term error behavior of the wireless channel in the scheduler design. In addition to typical first-order Quality of Service (QoS) metrics such as …

Exploiting Set-Level Non-Uniformity Of Capacity Demand To Enhance Cmp Cooperative Caching, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad C. Seth Sep 2009

Exploiting Set-Level Non-Uniformity Of Capacity Demand To Enhance Cmp Cooperative Caching, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Technical Reports

As the Memory Wall remains a bottleneck for Chip Multiprocessors (CMP), the effective management of CMP last level caches becomes of paramount importance in minimizing expensive off-chip memory accesses. For the CMPs with private last level caches, Cooperative Caching (CC) has been proposed to enable capacity sharing among private caches by spilling an evicted block from one cache to another. But this eviction-driven CC does not necessarily promote cache performance since it implicitly favors the applications full of block evictions regardless of their real capacity demand. The recent Dynamic Spill-Receive (DSR) paradigm improves cooperative caching by prioritizing applications with higher …
