Real-Time Detection System For Suspicious Urls, Krishna Prasad Chouty, Anup Chandra Thogiti, Kranthi Sudha Vudatha

All Capstone Projects

Twitter is prone to malicious tweets containing URLs for spam, phishing, and malware distribution. Conventional Twitter spam detection schemes utilize account features such as the ratio of tweets containing URLs and the account creation date, or relation features in the Twitter graph. These detection schemes are ineffective against feature fabrications or consume much time and resources. Conventional suspicious URL detection schemes utilize several features including lexical features of URLs, URL redirection, HTML content, and dynamic behavior. However, evading techniques such as time-based evasion and crawler evasion exist. In this paper, we propose WARNINGBIRD, a suspicious Real-Time URL detection system for …

Mutations Of Adjacent Amino Acid Pairs Are Not Always Independent, Jyotsna Ramanan, Peter Revesz Oct 2015

Mutations Of Adjacent Amino Acid Pairs Are Not Always Independent, Jyotsna Ramanan, Peter Revesz

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Evolutionary studies usually assume that the genetic mutations are independent of each other. This paper tests the independence hypothesis for genetic mutations with regard to protein coding regions. According to the new experimental results the independence assumption generally holds, but there are certain exceptions. In particular, the coding regions that represent two adjacent amino acids seem to change in ways that sometimes deviate significantly from the expected theoretical probability under the independence assumption.

Conflict-Aware Real-Time Routing For Industrial Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks, Chengjie Wu, Dolvara Gunatilaka, Mo Sha, Chenyang Lu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Process industries are adopting wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) as the communication infrastructure. WirelessHART is an open industrial standard for WSANs that have seen world-wide deployments. Real-time scheduling and delay analysis have been studied for WSAN extensively. End-to-end delay in WSANs highly depends on routing, which is still open problem. This paper presents the first real-time routing design for WSAN. We first discuss end-to-end delays of WSANs, then present our real-time routing design. We have implemented and experimented our routing designs on a wireless testbed of 69 nodes. Both experimental results and simulations show that our routing design can improve the …

Maximizing Network Lifetime Of Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks Under Graph Routing, Chengjie Wu, Dolvara Gunatilaka, Abusayeed Saifullah, Mo Sha, Paras Tiwari, Chenyang Lu, Yixin Chen

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Process industries are adopting wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) as the communication infrastructure. The dynamics of industrial environments and stringent reliability requirements necessitate high degrees of fault tolerance in routing. WirelessHART is an open industrial standard for WSANs that have seen world-wide deployments. WirelessHART employs graph routing schemes to achieve network reliability through multiple paths. Since many industrial devices operate on batteries in harsh environments where changing batteries are prohibitively labor-intensive, WSANs need to achieve long network lifetime. To meet industrial demand for long-term reliable communication, this paper studies the problem of maximizing network lifetime for WSANs under graph routing. We …

Enhancing Wifi-Based Localization With Visual Clues, Han Xu, Zheng Yang, Zimu Zhou, Longfei Shangguan, Yunhao Liu, Ke Yi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Indoor localization is of great importance to a wide range of applications in the era of mobile computing. Current mainstream solutions rely on Received Signal Strength (RSS) of wireless signals as fingerprints to distinguish and infer locations. However, those methods suffer from fingerprint ambiguity that roots in multipath fading and temporal dynamics of wireless signals. Though pioneer efforts have resorted to motion-assisted or peer-assisted localization, they neither work in real time nor work without the help of peer users, which introduces extra costs and constraints, and thus degrades their practicality. To get over these limitations, we propose Argus, an image-assisted …

Woodstocc: Extracting Latent Parallelism From A Dna Sequence Aligner On A Gpu, Stephen V. Cole, Jacob R. Gardner, Jeremy D. Buhler

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

An exponential increase in the speed of DNA sequencing over the past decade has driven demand for fast, space-efficient algorithms to process the resultant data. The first step in processing is alignment of many short DNA sequences, or reads, against a large reference sequence. This work presents WOODSTOCC, an implementation of short-read alignment designed for Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) architectures. WOODSTOCC translates a novel CPU implementation of gapped short-read alignment, which has guaranteed optimal and complete results, to the GPU. Our implementation combines an irregular trie search with dynamic programming to expose regularly structured parallelism. We first describe this implementation, …

From Physical Security To Cybersecurity, Arunesh Sinha, Thanh H. Nguyen, Debarun Kar, Matthew Brown, Milind Tambe, Albert Xin Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Security is a critical concern around the world. In many domains from cybersecurity to sustainability, limited security resources prevent complete security coverage at all times. Instead, these limited resources must be scheduled (or allocated or deployed), while simultaneously taking into account the importance of different targets, the responses of the adversaries to the security posture, and the potential uncertainties in adversary payoffs and observations, etc. Computational game theory can help generate such security schedules. Indeed, casting the problem as a Stackelberg game, we have developed new algorithms that are now deployed over multiple years in multiple applications for scheduling of …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Software metrics are a critical tool which provide continuous insight to products and processes and help build reliable software in mission critical environments. Using software metrics we can perform calculations that help assess the effectiveness of the underlying software or process. The two types of metrics relevant to our work is complexity metrics and in-process metrics. Complexity metrics tend to focus on intrinsic code properties like code complexity. In-process metrics focus on a higher-level view of software quality, measuring information that can provide insight into the underlying software development process.

Our aim is to develop and evaluate a metrics dashboard …

Api-Based Acquisition Of Evidence From Cloud Storage Providers, Andres E. Barreto Aug 2015

Api-Based Acquisition Of Evidence From Cloud Storage Providers, Andres E. Barreto

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Cloud computing and cloud storage services, in particular, pose a new challenge to digital forensic investigations. Currently, evidence acquisition for such services still follows the traditional approach of collecting artifacts on a client device. In this work, we show that such an approach not only requires upfront substantial investment in reverse engineering each service, but is also inherently incomplete as it misses prior versions of the artifacts, as well as cloud-only artifacts that do not have standard serialized representations on the client.

In this work, we introduce the concept of API-based evidence acquisition for cloud services, which addresses these concerns …

In Need Of A Domain-Specific Language Modeling Notation For Smartphone Applications With Portable Capability, Hamza Ghandorh, Luiz Fernando Capretz Dr., Ali Bou Nassif Dr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

The rapid growth of the smartphone market and its increasing revenue has motivated developers to target multiple platforms. Market leaders, such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft, develop their smartphone applications complying with their platform specifications. The specification of each platform makes a platform-dedicated application incompatible with other platforms due to the diversity of operating systems, programming languages, and design patterns. Conventional development methodologies are applied to smartphone applications, yet they perform less well. Smartphone applications have unique hardware and software requirements. All previous factors push smartphone developers to build less sophisticated and low-quality products when targeting multiple smartphone platforms. Model-driven …

This paper describes MetaCTF, a metamorphic set of CTF challenges for teaching reverse code engineering. MetaCTF is 1) scaffolded in a way that allows students to make incremental progress, 2) integrated with the course material so that students can immediately apply knowledge gained in class, 3) polymorphic and metamorphic so …

The Edge Group Coloring Problem With Applications To Multicast Switching, Jonathan Turner Aug 2015

The Edge Group Coloring Problem With Applications To Multicast Switching, Jonathan Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper introduces a natural generalization of the classical edge coloring problem in graphs that provides a useful abstraction for two well-known problems in multicast switching. We show that the problem is NP-hard and evaluate the performance of several approximation algorithms, both analytically and experimentally. We find that for random χ-colorable graphs, the number of colors used by the best algorithms falls within a small constant factor of χ, where the constant factor is mainly a function of the ratio of the number of outputs to inputs. When this ratio is less than 10, the best algorithms produces solutions that …

Neural Modeling Of Sequential Inferences And Learning Over Episodic Memory, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan Aug 2015

Neural Modeling Of Sequential Inferences And Learning Over Episodic Memory, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Episodic memory is a significant part of cognition for reasoning and decision making. Retrieval in episodic memory depends on the order relationships of memory items which provides flexibility in reasoning and inferences regarding sequential relations for spatio-temporal domain. However, it is still unclear how they are encoded and how they differ from representations in other types of memory like semantic or procedural memory. This paper presents a neural model of sequential representation and inferences on episodic memory. It contrasts with the common views on sequential representation in neural networks that instead of maintaining transitions between events to represent sequences, they …

Enabling Distributed Scientific Computing On The Campus, Derek J. Weitzel Jul 2015

Enabling Distributed Scientific Computing On The Campus, Derek J. Weitzel

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Campus research computing has evolved from many small decentralized resources, such as individual desktops, to fewer, larger centralized resources, such as clusters. This change has been necessitated by the increasing size of researcher's workloads, but this change has harmed the researcher's user experience. We propose to improve the user experience on the computational resources by creating an overlay cluster they are able to control. This overlay should transparently scale to national cyberinfrastructure as the user's demands increase.

We explore methods for improving the user experience when submitting jobs on a campus grid. To this end, we created a remote submission …

Compiling Collapsing Rules In Certain Constructor Systems, Sergio Antoy, Andy Jost Jul 2015

Compiling Collapsing Rules In Certain Constructor Systems, Sergio Antoy, Andy Jost

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The implementation of functional logic languages by means of graph rewriting requires a special handling of collapsing rules. Recent advances about the notion of a needed step in some constructor systems offer a new approach to this problem. We present two results: a transformation of a certain class of constructor-based rewrite systems that eliminates collapsing rules, and a rewrite-like relation that takes advantage of the absence of collapsing rules. We formally state and prove the correctness of these results. When used together, these results simplify without any loss of efficiency an implementation of graph rewriting and consequently of functional logic …

Automatic Fault Injection For Driver Robustness Testing, Kai Cong, Li Lei, Zhenkun Yang, Fei Xie Jul 2015

Automatic Fault Injection For Driver Robustness Testing, Kai Cong, Li Lei, Zhenkun Yang, Fei Xie

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Robustness testing is a crucial stage in the device driver development cycle. To accelerate driver robustness testing, effective fault scenarios need to be generated and injected without requiring much time and human effort. In this pa- per, we present a practical approach to automatic runtime generation and injection of fault scenarios for driver robust- ness testing. We identify target functions that can fail from runtime execution traces, generate effective fault scenarios on these target functions using a bounded trace-based it- erative strategy, and inject the generated fault scenarios at runtime to test driver robustness using a permutation-based injection mechanism. We …
