Bagging Ensemble For Deep Learning Based Gender Recognition Using Test-Timeaugmentation On Large-Scale Datasets, Taner Danişman
Bagging Ensemble For Deep Learning Based Gender Recognition Using Test-Timeaugmentation On Large-Scale Datasets, Taner Danişman
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We present a bagging ensemble of convolutional networks in combination with the test-time augmentation technique to improve performance on the cross-dataset gender recognition problem. The bagging ensemble combines the predictions from multiple homogeneous models into the ensemble prediction. Augmentation techniques are often used in the learning phase of the CNNs to improve the generalization ability. On the other hand, test-time augmentation is not a common method used in the testing phase of the learned model. We conducted experiments on models trained using different hyperparameters. We augmented the test data and combine the predictive outputs from these network models. Experiments performed …

A composite core contains large and small heterogeneous microengines. The most important property of composite cores is their ability to select the most proper microengine for running applications to save power without sacrificing too much performance. To achieve this, a composite core tries to predict the performance of the passive microengine by collecting various processor statistics from the active microengine at runtime. In the method proposed in the literature, the microengine, which is more ideal for running the rest of the application, is determined by a migrationdecision circuitry that is bound to collected statistics and complex functions, which are run …
Combined System Identification And Robust Control Of A Gimbal Platform, Mehmet Baskin, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu
Combined System Identification And Robust Control Of A Gimbal Platform, Mehmet Baskin, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Gimbaled imaging systems require very high performance inertial stabilization loops to achieve clear image acquisition, precise pointing, and tracking performance. Therefore, higher bandwidths become essential to meet recent increased performance demands. However, such systems often posses flexible dynamics around target bandwidth and time delay of gyroscope sensors which put certain limit to achievable bandwidths. For inertial stabilization loops, widely used design techniques have difficulty in achieving large bandwidth and satisfying required robustness simultaneously. Clearly, high performance control design hinges on accurate control-relevant model set. For that reason, combined system identification and robust control method is preferred. In the system identification …

Wavelet-Based Super Resolution Using Pansharpened Multispectral Images, Vi̇ldan Atalay Aydin, Hassan Foroosh
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Several remote sensing applications require high-spatial-high-spectral resolution multispectral (MS) images. However, most MS sensors provide low-spatial-high-spectral resolution MS images together with high-spatial-low-spectral resolution panchromatic (PAN) bands. In order to increase the spatial resolution of MS bands to the resolution of PAN images and to obtain high-spatial/spectral resolution MS bands, either MS and PAN images are fused (i.e., pansharpening) or super resolution (SR) is performed using MS bands only. Nevertheless, existing methods do not utilize the available temporal and spatial information together. In this paper, we propose a multiframe SR algorithm using high-spatial/spectral resolution MS images (i.e., pansharpened), taking advantage of …

Fast Hardware-Oriented Algorithm For 3d Positioning In Line-Of-Sight And Singlebounced Non-Line-Of-Sight Environments, Cem Yağli, Emre Özen, Ari̇f Akkeleş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The ability to find the location of a mobile object and track it in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) space is an indispensable feature of wireless communication systems. In particular, the increase in demand for using self-navigation technology in unmanned vehicles is attracting additional attention to this area of research. The methods and techniques developed for these systems compete in terms of simplicity, performance, and accuracy. However, the majority of solutions focus on only one of these performance metrics and are not applicable to the projected systems. In this study, a new location estimation solution that satisfies all three performance …

Clustering Ensemble Selection Based On The Extended Jaccard Measure, Hajar Khalili, Mohsen Rabbani, Ebrahim Akbari
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Clustering ensemble selection has shown high efficiency in the improvement of the quality of clustering solutions. This technique comprises two important metrics: diversity and quality. It has been empirically proved that ensembles of higher effectiveness can be achieved through taking into consideration the diversity and quality simultaneously. However, the relationships between these two metrics in base clusterings have remained uncertain. This paper suggests a new hierarchical selection algorithm using a diversity/quality measure based on the Jaccard similarity measure. In the proposed algorithm, the selection of the subsets of the clustering partitions is done based on their diversity measures. The proposed …

The purpose of automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems is to recognize speech signals obtained from people and convert them into text so that they can be processed by a computer. Although many ASR applications are versatile and widely used in the real world, they still generate relatively inaccurate results. They tend to generate spelling errors in recognized words, especially in noisy environments, in situations where the vocabulary size is increased, and at times when the input speech is of poor quality. The permanent presence of errors in ASR systems has led to the need to find alternative methods for automatic …

Evaluation Of Mother Wavelets On Steady-State Visually-Evoked Potentials Fortriple-Command Brain-Computer Interfaces, Ebru Sayilgan, Yilmaz Kemal Yüce, Yalçin İşler
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Wavelet transform (WT) is an important tool to analyze the time-frequency structure of a signal. The WT relies on a prototype signal that is called the mother wavelet. However, there is no single universal wavelet that fits all signals. Thus, the selection of mother wavelet function might be challenging to represent the signal to achieve the optimum performance. There are some studies to determine the optimal mother wavelet for other biomedical signals; however, there exists no evaluation for steady-state visually-evoked potentials (SSVEP) signals that becomes very popular among signals manipulated for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) recently. This study aims to explore, …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Deep learning models are widely being used to provide relevant recommendations in hybrid recommender systems. These hybrid systems combine the advantages of both content based and collaborative filtering approaches. However, these learning systems hamper the user privacy and disclose sensitive information. This paper proposes a privacy preserving deep learning based hybrid recommender system. In hybrid deep neural network, user?s side information such as age, location, occupation, zip code along with user rating is embedded and provided as input. These embedding?s pose a severe threat to individual privacy. In order to eliminate this breach of privacy, we have proposed a private …

On The Closed-Form Evaluation Of The Po Integral Using The Radon Transforminterpretation For Linear Triangles, Aslihan Aktepe, Hüseyi̇n Arda Ülkü
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This letter presents the complete mathematical formulation for the closed-form evaluation of the time domain physical optics (PO) integral on linear triangular patches using Radon transform (RT) interpretation. The incident field is assumed to be an impulsively excited plane wave and scattered fields are observed at far-zone. The PO integral is evaluated in closed-form as the intersection of the triangle and the plane formed by the incident and observation directions. In addition, a formula is suggested for the special case, which occurs if there is no intersection of the plane and all scatterer. Accuracy of the closed-form expressions is demonstrated …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Motion tracking is a well-defined yet application-specific problem of computer vision field, mostly entailing real-time constraints. Methods addressing such problems are expected also to ensure achievements such as high accuracy and robustness. A probabilistic estimation-based approach is proposed in this paper, in order to enhance the real-time motion tracking process of an RGB-Depth device, in terms of accuracy. A novel method is presented for tracking handpalm of a moving human subject to this end, under a sequence of assumptions such as indoor environment, single object, smooth movement and stable illumination. Tracking accuracy is improved within a particle filter framework by …

The growing pollution in the environment and the negative shift in the global climate compel authorities to take action to protect the environment and human health. Transportation is one of the major contributors to this environmental decay. The harmful gases released to the air by the vehicles using petroleum fuel increase each day. One of the solutions is to make a gradual transition to electric vehicles. A major part of manufacturing an electric vehicle is to produce an efficient electric motor and battery for it. Reducing the manufacturing and operating costs of these components will result in reducing the overall …

Slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) are two of the most important sleep stages that are considered in many studies. Detection of these two sleep stages will help researchers in many applications to detect sleeprelated diseases and disorders and also in many fields of neuroscience studies such as cognitive impairment and memory consolidation. Since manual sleep staging is time-consuming, subjective, and expensive; designing an efficient automatic sleep scoring system will overcome some of these difficulties. Many studies have proposed automatic sleep staging systems with different methods. In recent years, deep learning methods show their potential in different …

In the event of a natural disaster, arrival time of the search and rescue (SAR) teams to the affected areas is of vital importance to save the life of the victims. In particular, when an earthquake occurs in a geographically large area, reconnaissance of the debris within a short-time is critical for conducting successful SAR missions. An effective and quick situational awareness in postdisaster scenarios can be provided via the help of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, off-the-shelf UAVs suffer from the limited communication range as well as the limited airborne duration due to battery constraints. If telecommunication infrastructure is …

An Integrated Optimal Method For Cloud Service Ranking, Mohammad Hossein Nejat, Homayun Motameni, Hamed Vahdat-Nejad
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Many cloud providers present various services with different attributes. It is a complex, lengthy process to select a cloud service that meets user requirements from an assortment of services. At the same time, user requirements are sometimes defined with imprecision (sets or intervals), whereas it is also important to consider the quality of user feedback (QoU) and quality of service (QoS) attributes for ranking. Besides, each MADM method has a di erent procedure, which causes functional contradictions. These contradictions have led to confusion in choosing the best MADM method. It is necessary to provide a method that harmonizes the results. …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This research focuses on improving the performance of the voltage source inverter (VSI), which has been widely used in practical applications such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS), photovoltaic (PV) systems in standalone mode. To reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage without increasing the switching frequency, the T-type three levels inverter with enhanced modulation strategy, which minimizes the voltage ripple of the two input capacitors, is employed. In addition, a new single-loop fully digital control strategy in which various advanced control techniques such as proportional-integral observer, one-step ahead minimum prediction error, and model-based current command generator is …

Csop+Rp: A Novel Constraints Satisfaction Model For Requirements Prioritizationin Large-Scale Software Systems, Soheil Afraz, Hassan Rashidi, Naser Mikaeilvand
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
One of the main factors in the failure of software projects is the lack of attention to their requirements prioritization. In this paper, we propose a decision-oriented methodology with a novel model for requirements prioritization (RP) in large-scale software systems. The model is formulated based on the constraint satisfaction optimization problems (CSOP) approach, which we call CSOP+RP. The main objective of the model is to maximize the quality of the software in total, subject to the constraints on the budgets and importance level that pre-determined by the administrator. To evaluate CSOP+RP, we applied it to the police command-and-control system (PCCS), …

Improved Online Sequential Extreme Learning Machine: Os-Celm, Olcay Tosun, Recep Eryi̇ği̇t
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Online learning methods (OLM) have been gaining traction as a solution to classification problems because of rapid renewal and fast growth in volume of available data. ELM-based sequential learning (OS-ELM) is one of the most frequently used online learning methodologies partly due to fast training algorithm but suffers from inefficient use of its hidden layers due to the random assignment of the parameters of those layers. In this study, we propose an improved online learning model called online sequential constrained extreme learning machine (OS-CELM), which replaces the random assignment of those parameters with better generalization performance using the CELM method …

Scale-Invariant Histogram Of Oriented Gradients: Novel Approach For Pedestriandetection In Multiresolution Image Dataset, Sweta Panigrahi, Surya Narayana Raju Undi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper proposes a scale-invariant histogram of oriented gradients (SI-HOG) for pedestrian detection. Most of the algorithms for pedestrian detection use the HOG as the basic feature and combine other features with the HOG to form the feature set, which is usually applied with a support vector machine (SVM). Hence, the HOG feature is the most efficient and fundamental feature for pedestrian detection. However, the HOG feature produces feature vectors of different lengths for different image resolutions; thus, the feature vectors are incomparable for the SVM. The proposed method forms a scale-space pyramid wherein the histogram bin is calculated. Thus, …

Hc-Fft: Highly Configurable And Efficient Fft Implementation On Fpga, Paki̇ze Ergül, H. Fati̇h Uğurdağ, Doğancan Davutoğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
FFT is one of the basic building blocks in many applications such as sensors, radars, communications. For some applications, e.g., real-time spectral monitoring and analysis, FFT needs to be "run-time configurable" so that the system is real-time. When examining the previous work on configurable real-time (FPGA-based) FFT implementations, we see that the degree of configurability is less than what is desired. In this paper, a new FFT architecture is proposed, which has a high degree of run-time configurability and yet does not compromise area or throughput. The configurable parameters of this design are the number of FFT points (up to …

A Hybrid Approach Based On Transfer And Ensemble Learning For Improvingperformances Of Deep Learning Models On Small Datasets, Tunç Gülteki̇n, Aybars Uğur
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The need for high-volume data is one of the challenging requirements of the deep learning methods, and it makes it harder to apply deep learning algorithms to domains in which the data sources are limited, in other words, small. These domains may vary from medical diagnosis to satellite imaging. The performances of the deep learning methods on small datasets can be improved by the approaches such as data augmentation, ensembling, and transfer learning. In this study, we propose a new approach that utilizes transfer learning and ensemble methods to increase the accuracy rates of convolutional neural networks for classification tasks …

An Observer Based Temperature Estimation In Cooking Heterogeneous Mixtures:A Turkish Coffee Machine Application, Arda Dönerkayali, Türker Türker
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A high-precision temperature information is required to follow the recipe in automatic cooking processes of heterogeneous liquids. Therefore, measurement equipment plays a crucial role in appliances developed for automatic cooking processes. However, it is difficult to obtain the temperature information in such appliances since the sensors cannot be located inside the heterogeneous liquid and the diffusion model is not precise in general. In this manner, a method is proposed to estimate the temperature of the heterogeneous mixture during the cooking process. This is achieved by the utilization of only one temperature sensor located at the outside wall of the cooking …

A Model Of Service Differentiation Burst Assembling And Padding For Improvingtransmission Efficiency In Obs Networks, Van Hoa Le, Hong Quoc Nguyen, Thanh Chuong Dang, Viet Minh Nhat Vo
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Service differentiation is an indispensable requirement for transmission in optical burst switching (OBS) networks, which can be based on offset-time, burst-length, or both, offset-time and burst-length. The offset time based approach sets a large offset time for high priority bursts and a small offset time for low priority bursts. Whereas, with burst length based approach, high priority bursts are short in size and low priority bursts are long in length. A combination of these two approaches promises to provide flexible service differentiation. The paper proposes a model of service differentiation burst assembling and padding, in which the assembly time threshold …

Presentation Attack Detection For Face Recognition Using Remotephotoplethysmography And Cascaded Fusion, Mehmet Fati̇h Gündoğar, Çi̇ğdem Eroğlu Erdem
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Spoofing (presentation) attacks are important threats for face recognition and authentication systems, which try to deceive them by presenting an image or video of a different subject, or by using a 3D mask. Remote (non-contact) photoplethysmography (rPPG) is useful for liveness detection using a facial video by estimating the heart-rate of the subject. In this paper, we first compare the presentation attack detection performance of three different rPPG-based heart rate estimation methods on four datasets (3DMAD, Replay-Attack, Replay-Mobile, and MSU-MFSD). We also present a cascaded fusion system, which utilizes a multistage ensemble of classifiers using rPPG, motion-based (including head-pose, eye-gaze …

Opinion Dynamics Of Stubborn Agents Under The Presence Of A Troll Asdifferential Game, Aykut Yildiz, Ari̇f Bülent Özgüler
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The question of whether opinions of stubborn agents result in Nash equilibrium under the presence of troll is investigated in this study. The opinion dynamics is modelled as a differential game played by n agents during a finite time horizon. Two types of agents, ordinary agents and troll, are considered in this game. Troll is treated as a malicious stubborn content maker who disagrees with every other agent. On the other hand, ordinary agents maintain cooperative communication with other ordinary agents and they disagree with the troll. Under this scenario, explicit expressions of opinion trajectories are obtained by applying Pontryagin?s …
