Innovation: Field-Driven Ideas For Improvement, Todd A. May
Innovation: Field-Driven Ideas For Improvement, Todd A. May
Purdue Road School
INDOT has set up its new Department of Innovation. The goal of the Department is to collect, vet, implement, and recognize ideas, processes, and tools specifically generated by the workforce in the field, such as construction, maintenance, contracting, and inspection. Through a peer review vetting process, ideas will be worked through a systems theory/engineer-ing process for ultimate statewide implementa-tion. Join us for a discussion
2d Hydraulic Modeling For Streambank Stabilization In The White River, Nabil Ghalayini
2d Hydraulic Modeling For Streambank Stabilization In The White River, Nabil Ghalayini
Purdue Road School
As part of the new I-69 design in Morgan County, INDOT retained WSP USA to provide streambank stabilization design services for the White River. This presentation will discuss how 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling helped refine the design and include visuals to demonstrate how 1D and 2D models can help establish flow di-rection velocities at riverbanks and around pro-posed structures. A comparison of results from 1D and 2D model results will also be presented
Michigan's Inventory-Based Rating System For Unpaved Roads, Peter Torola
Michigan's Inventory-Based Rating System For Unpaved Roads, Peter Torola
Purdue Road School
The current rating systems for unpaved roads lack stability and reliability and, therefore, provide little benefit as project- or network-level metrics. Since many of these systems are derived from paved-road assessment systems, they focus heavily on surface distresses rather than road width, drainage, and other features. This session presents the Inventory-Based Rating System as a stable and implementable method of condition assessment for unpaved roads, without the focus on surface distresses.

The presentation also includes information on the draft MUTCD language for intersection conflict warning systems.
Rehabilitation Of Low-Volume Roads Using Fdr, William Flora
Rehabilitation Of Low-Volume Roads Using Fdr, William Flora
Purdue Road School
NDOT has used full-depth reclamation to re-habilitate low-volume roads on the state-maintained system. FDR improves the life and structural strength of the pavement at reasonable life-cycle cost. This presentation looks at the strength improvement by comparing before-and-after falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing of pavement sections. In addition, it compares the life-cycle cost of an FDR to a traditional pavement treatment, such as recon-struction or replacement.

22nd Street Reconstruction, City Of Elwood, Indiana, Haseeb Ghumman, William Savage, Darren Paarkes
Purdue Road School
This project involved full-depth reconstruction of 22nd Street, from P Street to Main Street, for an approximate distance of 1 mile and entailed a two-lane roadway with curb and gutter, new sidewalks, a storm system, and water and sanitary line relocations. In addition to federal funds, due to Red Gold’s investment commit-ments in the area and subsequent potential economic development, the project was awarded up to $1.4M in an Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) grant. Join us for a discussion.

Indot Einvoice Application For Consultant Contracts, Jeff Clanton, Dale Carter
Purdue Road School
In 2016, INDOT began the implementation of an electronic consultant invoicing application with nine pilot firms. In March of 2018, the application was rolled out for use with most new consultant contracts. Approximately 2,500 invoices were processed through eInvoice in FY 2019, and INDOT is working on an enhancement retrofit for implementation on earlier contracts. In this session INDOT representatives will review the purpose and features of the application as well as planned future enhancements.
Aging Urban Corridors: Big Challenges, Big Rewards, Carl Camacho, Erin Wenger, David Borden
Aging Urban Corridors: Big Challenges, Big Rewards, Carl Camacho, Erin Wenger, David Borden
Purdue Road School
When revitalizing aging urban streets, an early, in-depth investigation holds the keys to success. Property ownership documents are gener-ations old. Utility records are often nonexis-tent. Century-old underground infrastructure must be located and evaluated. The up-front, fact-finding work is more critical, there’s more of it, and it’s more valuable to the end result. Find out how we set the stage for improving a section of US 40, the “First Highway in America,” that runs through Indianapolis.

Trends And Advances In Geosynthetic Interlayers, Mark Marienfeld
Purdue Road School
Geosynthetic pavement interlayers for asphalt pavement have been used for over 50 years. They have been improved to resolve millability, recyclability, and pavement performance concerns when millings with interlayer pieces are used in a new mix design. This presentation will summarize third-party testing for new geosynthetic interlayers and their performance improvements during milling and recycling of asphalt pavements. It will also highlight pavement performance when millings of the interlayer are used in a new mix design.

Contextual Adjustment Of The Ite Trip Generation Rates Using Wi-Fi And Bluetooth Technologies, Saba Doulabi
Contextual Adjustment Of The Ite Trip Generation Rates Using Wi-Fi And Bluetooth Technologies, Saba Doulabi
LSU Master's Theses
The ITE Trip Generation Handbook has been in common use for about half a century to estimate vehicle trips generated by more than 172 land use categories as a function of establishment size (floor area) only. However, observed trip rates display a huge error range across different sites. Although contextual adjustment factors can ameliorate the error in the ITE trip generation estimates considerably, local site-specific trip generation rates should be collected for this purpose. Due to the huge time and monetary costs of data collection, adjusting the ITE trip generation rate is ignored by many jurisdictions. The primary contribution of …

A Novel Self-Healing System: Towards A Sustainable Porous Asphalt, Shi Xu, Xueyan Liu, Amir Tabakovic, Erik Schlangen
Articles
Self-healing asphalt, aimed to produce a sustainable asphalt pavement using green technology, has been studied in the past two decades. Technologies including encapsulated rejuvenator and induction heating have been proposed, demonstrated in the laboratory, and gradually evaluated in field application. This paper looks into the synergy effect of the above two technologies, where induction heating serves as the asphalt damage repair mechanism, requiring just 2 min heating time and encapsulated rejuvenator will replenish (rejuvenate) aged asphalt binder and reinstate bitumen’s healing ability. Moreover, the increased temperature from induction heating could in turn accelerate the diffusion process of rejuvenator into aged …
