INDOT recently used a geosynthetic paving fabric interlayer for the first time, on I-65, to retard reflective cracking and as a pavement moisture barrier. The nonwoven fabric interlayer used is both millable and recyclable. In-House Project Design, Special Provision Specification, and Initial Test Results—Highfriction surface treatment (HFST) has been proactively utilized as a cost-effective solution to reducing vehicle crashes at curves across the country. As an initiative, INDOT is currently installing HFST at 26 locations statewide, mainly horizontal curves with high crash rates. Mowing activities are usually reported by daily work orders and it is difficult to obtain quantitative information characterizing the utilization and productivity of the mowing operations. This research uses telematics data from commercial sensors to track the daily activity of seven mowers in the Fort Wayne district. Weather data from NOAA was also captured to estimate the weather related delays. During a one-month period, the mowers collectively covered a total of around 1170 miles and an area of nearly 1800 acres of mowing. INDOT Standard Specifications Section 918, Geosynthetics, has been revised and updated, broadening the tools available to designers and contractors challenged with variable soil types and site conditions. The revision effort included harmonizing Section 200, 600, and 900 language relative to the design and use of geosynthetics. Section 918 broadly pertains to geosynthetics, which includes geotextiles, geogrids, geocells, geomembranes, and geocomposites. This session includes a practical discussion about specific changes to geotextile specifications and the addition of geotextile types.

Until recently portable traffic signals, which are mounted on towable trailer supports, were not allowed in Indiana. However, portable signals have many advantages over fixed temporary signals, so the Indiana Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices was revised to allow them, and specifications for their use are now in place. Purdue University initiated a bike-sharing program in August 2015 with 13 locations and 50 bikes. The first 14 weeks of the program saw 15,259 rentals for a total of 22,677 hours. The Purdue sustainable transportation staff partnered with Purdue traffic engineering students to monitor usage trends to identify future investment opportunities and changes to the bike sharing contract. In this session we will present the series of analytics performance measures, management dashboards, and changes initiated as a result of this partnership.

Based in crowdsourced probe vehicle data, it is linked to a variety of other tools to provide powerful monitoring and after action review capability. High-speed approach rural roundabouts have been found to reduce overall crashes by 71% and injury crashes by 87% and have become an effective tool used by public agencies to improve safety and capacity at rural intersections. In this presentation we will discuss critical design features for effective implementation, including alignment on approach, deflection, splitter islands, lighting, signing, curbing, diameter, design vehicle, and landscaping.
