Trajectory Shaping Of Surface-To-Surface Missile With Terminal Impact Angle Constraint, S. Subchan Nov 2007

Trajectory Shaping Of Surface-To-Surface Missile With Terminal Impact Angle Constraint, S. Subchan

Makara Journal of Technology

This paper presents trajectory shaping of a surface-to-surface missile attacking a fixed with terminal impact angle constraint. The missile must hit the target from above, subject to the missile dynamics and path constraints. The problem is reinterpreted using optimal control theory resulting in the formulation of minimum integrated altitude. The formulation entails nonlinear, two-dimensional missile flight dynamics, boundary conditions and path constraints. The generic shape of optimal trajectory is: level flight, climbing, diving; this combination of the three flight phases is called the bunt manoeuvre. The numerical solution of optimal control problem is solved by a direct collocation method. The …

Repetitive Impact Response Of A Beam Structure Subjected To Harmonic Base Excitation, Elizabeth K. Ervin, Jonathan A. Wickert Oct 2007

Repetitive Impact Response Of A Beam Structure Subjected To Harmonic Base Excitation, Elizabeth K. Ervin, Jonathan A. Wickert

Jonathan A. Wickert

This paper investigates the forced response dynamics of a clamped–clamped beam to which a rigid body is attached, and in the presence of periodic or non-periodic impacts between the body and a comparatively compliant base structure. The assembly is subjected to base excitation at specified frequency and acceleration, and the potentially complex responses that occur are examined analytically. The two sets of natural frequencies and vibration modes of the beam-rigid body structure (in its in-contact state, and in its not-in-contact state), are used to treat the forced response problem through a series of algebraic mappings among those states. A modal …

Online Learning Algorithm For Structural Control Using Magnetorheological Actuators, Simon Laflamme Jun 2007

Online Learning Algorithm For Structural Control Using Magnetorheological Actuators, Simon Laflamme

Simon Laflamme

Magnetorheological actuators are promising devices for mitigating vibrations because they only require a fraction of energy for a similar performance to active control. Conversely, these semi-active devices have limited maximum forces and are hard to model due to the rheological properties of their fluid. When considering structural control, classical theories necessitate full knowledge of the structural dynamic states and properties most of which can only be estimated when considering large-scale control, which may be difficult or inaccurate for complicated geometries due to the non-linear behaviour of structures. Additionally, most of these theories do not take into account the response delay …

Observations Of Structural Damage Caused By Hurricane Katrina On The Mississippi Gulf Coast, Christopher D. Eamon, Patrick Fitzpatrick, Dennis D. Truax

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

The loads associated with Hurricane Katrina led to the destruction or severe damage of approximately 130,000 homes and over 200 deaths in the state of Mississippi. This paper discusses the results of a field inspection of structural damage along the state’s Gulf Coast area caused by this hurricane. It was found that reinforced concrete, steel frame, and heavy timber structures generally performed well, with minimal structural damage. Precast concrete, light frame wood, and bridge structures generally performed poorly. Non-structural components of all building types, in particular facades and interior partitions subjected to storm surge, were typically destroyed. For various structures, …

Behaviour Of Reinforced Self-Consolidating Concrete Frames, Aly Said, Moncef Nehdi Apr 2007

Behaviour Of Reinforced Self-Consolidating Concrete Frames, Aly Said, Moncef Nehdi

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Multi-storey reinforced concrete (RC) structural frames represent some of the most congested structural elements. Placing and consolidating concrete in such structural frames imposes substantial challenges. This offers a unique area of application for self-consolidating concrete (SCC) because of its inherent ability to flow under its own weight and fill congested sections, complicated formwork and hard-to-reach areas. Research is, however, needed to demonstrate the ability of SCC structural frames adequately to resist vertical and lateral loads. In the present study, full-scale 3 m high beam-column joints reinforced as per the Canadian Standards CSA A23·3-94 and ACI-352R-02 were made with normal concrete …
