Reliability Of Using Secondary And Tertiary Treated Wastewater In Concrete Mixing And Curing, Amany G. Micheal Prof., Haidy Abd El Salam
Architectural Engineering
Water scarcity is a problem that faces many regions. In a developing and arid countries, the need for fresh water is exponentially increasing. One of the most water consuming industries is the construction industry, especially in concrete manufacturing. This research is an evaluation of the Reliability of recycled wastewater to be used in concrete manufacturing. Two different wastewater treatment regimens are implemented: secondary and tertiary treated wastewater. The treated wastewater, either secondary or tertiary, replaces potable water with percentages of 25%, 50%, and 100%. The mixture of the two types of water is used in concrete mixing and curing. Control …

In our recent catastrophes, Progressive collapse become an essential behavior that should be researched widely and to be considered by engineers through the design process. The main vertical loss can be caused by different reasons, either blast due to terrorist attack, failure of columns due to extreme earthquake application, or finally, losing a structural element due to high impact resulted from a vehicle or any other moving object. Losing main vertical element due to extreme earthquake excitation is an important and repeated occurrence, However, it didn’t take much attention in progressive collapse recent studies. Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) and General …

Parametric Study On Environmental Friendly Blast Wall Systems, Mariam Ehab, Aya Elhozayen
Civil Engineering
Protecting people and structures against blast loading that can happen due to several reasons such as wars, terrorism or even accidental explosions, has become of great concern during the last decade. Blast walls is considered as one of the most effective ways to protect important structures against such hazards. However, limitation in technology of construction using high –technology blast wall systems are a huge obstacle specially in developed countries. Moreover, using high-technology materials in construction industry are very polluting process along with the high expenses during construction phase. As a result, designers tend to propose solutions with readily available materials …
Modeling Considerations For Built-Up Compression Members In Communication Towers, Ghada M. El-Mahdy P.Eng., Ceng, Amro A. Alawamry
Modeling Considerations For Built-Up Compression Members In Communication Towers, Ghada M. El-Mahdy P.Eng., Ceng, Amro A. Alawamry
Civil Engineering
It is a well-established fact that built-up compression members exhibit extra flexibility than their equivalent solid members due to the shear action which effects the overall stability. This is usually taken into consideration by using a modified slenderness ratio for buckling modes that involve relative deformation of the interconnectors. Built-up members are often used as space truss members in communication towers. When modeling communication towers in structural analysis programs like SAP2000, the built-up member is usually defined as a single member element with a double section cross section. This does not catch the increase in deflection in the member due …

The Effect Of Blast Loading On Concrete Blast Walls With Different Materials And Geometries, Mohamed Hazem Awad, Aya Elhozayen
Civil Engineering
Blast loading tests have been developed in air by using ANSYS-AUTODYN program for simulation. The fourteen simulated models mainly conducted in four phases as first phase is discussing four models grouped in Group 1 consists of four concrete blast walls with double layer that subjected to four different masses of TNT (10, 50, 100, 500) kg. The main purpose for this group results to choose the proper TNT mass to use in the next phases of the research to make the comparison between models, involving pressure and damage, more obvious. The most appropriate mass is 100kg TNT to differentiate the …

Online Implementation Of Structural Analysis Tool For Remote Learning, Ghada El-Mahdy, Amany Micheal
Civil Engineering
The delivery of a structural analysis module to architectural or civil engineering students needs the visualization of certain diagrams, such as the internal force diagrams and the elastic line. These diagrams are difficult to grasp for students new to structural analysis and need a lot of practice to become proficient in drawing them. Current structural analysis textbooks with electronic platforms do not include tools to draw the internal force diagrams or deflection. This has led to the initiative of creating an online structural analysis tool to enable the student to easily apply different loadings on different statical systems to draw …

Deep Learning Techniques For Structural Response Prediction During Strong Ground Motions, Ahmed A. Torky, Susumu Ohno Prof., Toshide Kashima Prof.
Civil Engineering
In this paper, deep learning techniques are applied to predict a building’s structural response to strong ground motions. Data from sensors near and inside structures measure accelerations during strong ground motions. The Building Research Institute (BRI) ANX building, an eight-story structure, has experienced major earthquakes since 1998. Sensors in the building provide and accumulate big data of historic events. Changes of the natural frequency of the ANX building from the big data is initially quantified. The time-series data of the historic events can be used to predict future response to future events using deep learning models rapidly. Although previous literature …

Experimental Investigation For Moment Redistribution In Continuous Rc Beams Top Strengthened With Cfrp And Steel Plates, Amr Ibrahim, Shady Salem, Ayman Khalil, Mahmoud El-Kateb
Civil Engineering
An experimental study was conducted on eight T-section continuous reinforced concrete beams top strengthened with CFRP and steel plates. The beams had a constant cross section and flexural steel reinforcement which was designed to prevent brittle failure due to crushing of concrete before steel yielding. The plates were installed on both sides of the slab above the beam web as near surface mounted or externally bonded to investigate the effect of different plating techniques on the moment redistribution in reinforced concrete beams. The number of plates in each specimen was changed. Steel stirrups were used and designed so that no …

Moment Redistribution In Continuous Rc Beams Top Strengthened With Steel And Cfrp Plates, Amr Ibrahim, Ayman Khalil, Shady Salem, Mahmoud El-Kateb
Civil Engineering
It is common practice to retrofit continuous reinforced concrete (RC) beams by fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) or steel plates. This can cause a significant amount of moment redistribution (MR) which results in an efficient and economic design when taken into consideration. There is lack in research regarding MR in continuous RC beams when strengthening plates are applied only at the top side at the hogging regions. The main purpose of this paper is to assess MR in continuous RC beams top strengthened with steel and/or carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. In this respect, a nonlinear finite element model was …

Assessment Of Smc Frames Under Different Column Removal Scenarios, Mariam Ehab, Mina Malak
Civil Engineering
Throughout the past decades, failure of structures threatening the lives of humans had been popular whether through structure failure due to human error such as Hyatt Regency walkway collapse, 1981, terrorist attacks on the American embassy attack in Nairobi, Kenya 1998 and the famous 9/11 attacks in 2001 and many more. As a result of these incidents, The Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) was developed concerning the progressive collapse issues by analyzing different types of structures under column loss and studying the overall structural behavior. However, the (UFC) didn’t scope on the local behavior of the structural components and its connection …

Progressive Collapse Assessment Of Post-Tensioned Reinforced Concrete Flat Slab Structures Using Aem, Amgad Mahrous, Mariam Ehab, Hamed Hadhoud
Civil Engineering
Progressive collapse is defined as the failure of a primary vertical element of a structure, which may result in the failure of adjoining elements, consequently, leads to a partial or total collapse of the structure. Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) and General Services Administration (GSA) guidelines used to assess the behavior of structures subjected to progressive collapse as a result of the loss of primary vertical support. For the current case study, numerical analysis is carried out for a typical ten-story reinforced concrete post-tensioned flat slab structure subjected to primary vertical element loss (corner column, edge column, internal column, edge shear …

Strengthening Of Corroded Steel Structures Using Cfrp – An Experimental Review, Ghada El-Mahdy Ph.D., P.Eng, Abdallah H. Yassin, Abdel El Rahman Khaled
Civil Engineering
Fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) have been widely used to strengthen reinforced concrete structures, however, nowadays their use to strengthen steel structures is under investigation. In particular, the need to strengthen corroded steel structures found in aggressive environments, such as marine environments, which have undergone a reduction in cross-sectional area and hence a reduction in their load-carrying capacity is in need of studying. The main problems that arise when using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets to strengthen steel structures is the weakness in the interfacial bond between the CFRP and the steel surface, the thinness of CFRP sheet, and the …

Sway And No-Sway Behaviour Of Pitched Roof Portal Frames Composed Of Cold-Formed Steel Sections, Ghada El-Mahdy Ph.D, P.Eng., Maged Tawfick Hanna Ph.D
Civil Engineering
Cold-formed sections buckle locally and distortionally in combination with overall buckling of the member. When these sections are incorporated into a portal frame structure, this combination of buckling modes affects the overall buckling behaviour of the portal frame. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of local and distortional buckling on the overall behaviour of portal frames. The portal frames studied have a span of 10 m and an eave height of 3 m with a roof pitch of 1:10. Two frames are studied the first with one intermediate interconnector at the midpoints of the column and …
Experimental Calibration Of Centrally Loaded Built-Up Battened Compression Members, Ghada El-Mahdy Ph.D., P.Eng.
Experimental Calibration Of Centrally Loaded Built-Up Battened Compression Members, Ghada El-Mahdy Ph.D., P.Eng.
Civil Engineering
There is a large diversity in the requirements for designing built-up compression members between international design codes. Most codes, including the North American standards and specifications specify the use of an equivalent or modified slenderness ratio. In general, all North American standards and specifications agree on the need of using a modified slenderness ratio, but differ in the factor used to multiply the local slenderness ratio. Theoretically it is difficult to estimate the exact value of this factor, and using experimental methods does not capture the exact value of this factor either. Hence, a different approach is needed to determine …
