Strength Of Steel-To-Steel Screw Connections -- Update To Provisions, Thomas Stevens, Thomas Sputo, Jennifer Bridge
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
The objective of this project is to review the existing provisions of the AISI S100-16 North American Specification for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, for screw connections loaded in shear and tension (but not combined actions). A recent study by the Steel Deck Institute (Sputo 2017) revealed possible unconservative results for screw pull-over, particularly in thinner sheets and/or lower ductility.
This study performed a comprehensive analysis of available steel-to-steel screw connection strength test data, totaling 702 shear tests, 143 pull-over tests, and 335 pull-out tests. The tested strength of these connections was compared to the predicted strength from the existing …
Battery-Free Wireless Strain Measurement Using An Antenna Sensor, Yang Wang
Battery-Free Wireless Strain Measurement Using An Antenna Sensor, Yang Wang
INSPIRE Archived Webinars
A battery-free antenna sensor can wirelessly measure strain on a structure. Bonded to the surface of a base structure, the antenna sensor deforms when the structure is under strain, causing the antenna’s electromagnetic resonance frequency to change. This resonance frequency change can be wirelessly interrogated and recorded by a reader through electromagnetic backscattering. A radio frequency identification (RFID) chip on the sensor harnesses a small amount of energy from the interrogation signal and responds to the reader. The resonance frequency change identified by the reader is then used to determine the strain applied on the structure. The latest antenna sensor …
Flexural Behavior Of Hybrid Composite Beam (Hcb) Bridges, Mohamed A. Aboelseoud, John J. Myers
Flexural Behavior Of Hybrid Composite Beam (Hcb) Bridges, Mohamed A. Aboelseoud, John J. Myers
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new hybrid composite beam (HCB) has recently been used in the construction of three bridges in Missouri, USA. HCB consists of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) that is poured into classical arch shape and tied at the ends by steel tendons. Both the concrete and the steel are tucked inside a durable fiberglass shell, and the voids are filled with polyiso foam. This paper aims to examine the flexural behavior of an in-service HCB, evaluate the current methodology and assumptions, and propose modifications to that methodology. To achieve these goals, the strains induced in HCB elements due to different loading stages …

Probabilistic Seismic Demand Analysis Of A Bridge With Unbonded, Post-Tensioned, Concrete-Filled, Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Tube Columns, Manisha Rai, Mohamed Elgawady, Adrian Rodriguez-Marek
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Ground motions at sites close to a fault are sometimes affected by forward directivity, where the rupture energy arrives at the site in a form of a very short duration pulse. These pulses impose a heavy demand on structures located in the vicinity of the fault. In this research, a probabilistic seismic demand analysis (PSDA) for a self-centering bridge is carried out. The bridge columns consisted of unbonded, post-tensioned, concrete-filled, fiber-reinforced polymer tubes. A bridge model was developed and non-linear time history analyses were performed. Three different methodologies that used spectral accelerations to predict structural responses were used, and a …
Mechanism Of Tricalcium Silicate Hydration In The Presence Of Polycarboxylate Polymers, Rachel Cook, Hongyan Ma, Aditya Kumar
Mechanism Of Tricalcium Silicate Hydration In The Presence Of Polycarboxylate Polymers, Rachel Cook, Hongyan Ma, Aditya Kumar
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Abstract: The early-age hydration of cement is inhibited in the presence of comb-shaped polycarboxylate ether (PCE) polymer -- a dispersant commonly added to control rheological properties of fresh cement paste. This study employs a series of microcalorimetry experiments and phase boundary nucleation and growth simulations to elucidate the effects of dosage and molecular architecture of PCE on hydration of tricalcium silicate (Ca3SiO5 or C3S in cement notation), the dominant phase in cement. Results show that PCE -- regardless of its molecular architecture -- suppresses early-age hydration of C3S. PCE-induced retardation becomes increasingly more …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Reliable and accurate measurements of temperature and strain in structures subjected to fire can be difficult to obtain using traditional sensing technologies based on electrical signals. Fiber optic sensors, which are based on light signals, solve many of the problems of monitoring structures in high temperature environments; however, they present their own challenges. This paper, which is intended for structural engineers new to fiber optic sensors, reviews various fiber optic sensors that have been used to make measurements in structure fires, including the sensing principles, fabrication, key characteristics, and recently-reported applications. Three categories of fiber optic sensors are reviewed: Grating-based …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In situ nanoindentation experiments have been widely adopted to characterize material behaviors of microelectronic devices. This work introduces the latest developments of nanoindentation experiments in the characterization of nonlinear material properties of 3D integrated microelectronic devices using the through-silicon via (TSV) technique. The elastic, plastic, and interfacial fracture behavior of the copper via and matrix via interface were characterized using small-scale specimens prepared with a focused ion beam (FIB) and nanoindentation experiments. A brittle interfacial fracture was found at the Cu/Si interface under mixed-mode loading with a phase angle ranging from 16.7° to 83.7°. The mixed-mode fracture strengths were extracted …
Long Period Fiber Grating, Thin Coating Of Graphene And Silver Nanowires, And Corrosion Sensing For Life-Cycle Assessment Of Steel Structures, Chuanrui Guo
Doctoral Dissertations
"This study aims to develop and validate a compact, integrated lab-on-sensor system for simultaneous measurement of strain, temperature and corrosion-induced mass loss in steel structures and concrete reinforcement elements in order to assess their life-cycle performance. The sensing system operates based on the principle of long period fiber gratings (LPFG) that are responsive to both thermal and mechanical deformation, and the change in refractive index of any medium surrounding the optical fiber. To fabricate a LPFG sensor for strain and temperature measurement, a CO2 laser aided fiber grating system was assembled. To enable mass loss measurement, a low pressure …
Influence Of Pumping Parameters On The Freeze-Thaw And Scaling Resistance Of Highly Workable Concrete, Alexandra Nicole Wehar
Influence Of Pumping Parameters On The Freeze-Thaw And Scaling Resistance Of Highly Workable Concrete, Alexandra Nicole Wehar
Masters Theses
“Over the past 60 years, pumping concrete has gained popularity due to the economic and technical benefits that typically accompanies it. However, boom configuration and flow rate can adversely affect freeze-thaw and scaling resistance of concrete due to the effects of pressure on the air-void system. Therefore, the objective of this research is to assess the influence of different pumping parameters on the durability of hardened self-consolidating concrete. Self-consolidating, flowable, and conventional concrete mixtures were tested during large scale pumping experiments positioning the pump boom in an “A” and a flat shape as well as using different pumping speeds. In …

Strength Of Cold-Formed Steel Clip Angle In Combined Bending And Shear Loading, Cheng Yu, Zhishan Yan, Wenying Zhang
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) clip angles have been commonly used for connecting CFS framing members or attaching CFS members to the major building structure. The implementation of clip angles involves consideration of ultimate strength for combined bending moments and shear forces. Therefore, a test program of CFS clip angle was recently conducted to investigate the behavior and strength of cold-formed steel clip angle subjected to combined bending moments and shear forces at different boundary conditions. The research included connection tests on clip angle. The testing method was adopted from the AISI S914 Test Standard for Joist Connectors Attached to Clod-Formed …

Critical Design Criteria For Standard, Truncated, And Parallel Chords Cold-Formed Steel Trusses, Maelle Van Thienen, Johannes Dimyadi, James B. P. Lim, G. Charles Clifton
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The design of cold-formed steel trusses can be a very complicated and long repetitive process involving up to 28 load combinations added to serviceability checks depending on the design standards being used. This process is particularly tedious if a near optimal solution is required. Additionally, the risk of introducing human errors is usually quite high as it is a process often done by hand. FRAMECAD Structure is a niche software solution born from the desire to provide a complete solution for constructing with cold-formed steel by a company selling roll-forming machines. FRAMECAD Structure specialises on automating the calculations and design …

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Slot welds can be used for connections in cold-formed steel (CFS) structures. However, structural engineers will find AISI S100, “North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members” (AISI 2016) - which can be used for guidance in calculating structural capacity of many welds types - silent on this specific application.
Research at the University of Colorado Denver has been directed toward determination of the strength of slot welds in sheet steel. A comprehensive series of tests were performed to determine structural capacity and ductility of various slot weld widths using a metal inert gas (MIG) welding process. …

Low Fatigue Response Of Crest-Fixed Cold-Formed Steel Drape Curved Roof Claddings, Krishanu Roy, James B. P. Lim, Amir Mohammad Yousefi, G. Charles Clifton, Mahen Mahendran
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Cold-formed steel roof claddings are subjected to significant suction/uplift pressures during high wind events. In New Zealand, the strong prevailing winds makes this a common occurrence. Suction pressures are generated by the turbulence of the wind flow around the building which can vary both spatially and temporally. The weakest link in the roofing system is the connection between roof sheeting and screw fasteners, which if fails, can lead to progressive collapse of the whole roofing assembly. Fluctuating high wind suction pressures can result in either static or fatigue pull-through failure of the roof sheeting at its screw fastener connections. Current …

Computational Modeling Of Joist-To-Ledger Connections In Cold-Formed Steel Diaphragms, Hernan Castaneda, M. Eng, Kara D. Peterson
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Cold-formed steel framed buildings can involve a range of options for framing systems, including balloon framing, platform framing, and ledger framing. Transfer of lateral forces from the diaphragms to the wall system (and ultimately to the ground) depends on the interactions within the wall-diaphragm connection, which is dependent on choice of framing system. In ledger framing, floor joists are hung from top of wall studs via a rim track (ledger) and clip angle connection. Recent experimental efforts at Johns Hopkins University studied the wall-diaphragm connection with the goal of quantifying its contribution to overall diaphragm response. Results from these experiments …

Effect Of Connection Details On The Cyclic Behavior Of Nestable Screw Sidelaps, S. Torabian, H. Folk, Benjamin W. Schafer
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
The connection strength and stiffness sensitivity of screwed sidelaps in nestable steel decks to screw installation details has been experimentally explored via cyclic testing. The cyclic behavior of sidelaps has been recently incorporated in the high fidelity modeling and seismic evaluation of the steel deck diaphragm in rigid wall - flexible diaphragm buildings, where “unzipping” a sidelap (loss of a significant number of sidelap connections along a deck edge) could significantly reduce the seismic performance of the whole diaphragm. A total of 24 monotonic and cyclic sidelap tests have been performed in the Thin-Walled Structures Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. …
Fire Resistance Of Cavity Insulated Light Gauge Steel Framed Walls, Anthony Deloge Ariyanayagam, Mahen Mahendran
Fire Resistance Of Cavity Insulated Light Gauge Steel Framed Walls, Anthony Deloge Ariyanayagam, Mahen Mahendran
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Light-gauge steel framed (LSF) wall systems are made of cold-formed steel studs and tracks and lined with gypsum plasterboards. They are mostly cavity insulated to provide acoustic and thermal performance. Cavity insulation delays the temperature rise across the wall as it restrains the heat transfer. This delays the ambient plasterboard surface temperature rise and thus improves the insulation failure time of LSF walls. However, LSF walls are also used as load bearing walls. Having cavity insulation causes the fire side temperatures to increase rapidly, resulting in a higher temperature gradient across the stud depth. This leads to higher thermal bowing …

Numerical Simulation Of The Thermal And Mechanical Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Composite Floor Under Fire Conditions, Jixian Peng, Wei Chen, Jihong Ye, Zhengliu Wang
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Cold-formed steel (CFS) building structures are generally acknowledged as green and industrialized buildings, and the fire resistance behavior has become an important issue. Previous studies were mainly to investigate the fire performance of load-bearing CFS walls lined with different panels. Based on the finite element (FE) software package, ABAQUS, this paper presented a numerical simulation on a new CFS channel joist – ALC (autoclaved lightweight concrete) composite floor under fire conditions. Finally, the present numerical simulation of CFS composite floor in fire was compared with previous full-scaled fire experiments of such floors. The results showed that the temperature progression of …

New Web Crippling Design Rules For Cold-Formed Steel Beams, L. Sundararajah, M. Mahendran, P. Keerthan
CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)
Lipped channel beams (LCBs) and SupaCee sections are commonly used as floor joists and bearers in the construction industry. SupaCee section is one of the cold-formed steel members, which is increasingly used in the building construction sector. It is characterized by unique ribbed web and curved lip elements, and is claimed to be more economical with extra strength than the traditional channel sections. These thin-walled LCBs and SupaCee sections are subjected to specific local and global failures, one of them being web crippling. Several experimental and numerical studies have been conducted in the past to study the web crippling behaviour …
