The Shifting Discourse On Third Places: Ideological Implications, Mark N. Wexler, Judy Oberlander
The Shifting Discourse On Third Places: Ideological Implications, Mark N. Wexler, Judy Oberlander
Journal of Ideology
Within the social sciences, literature on third places attempts to assist in the construction of a social concept of “place”. This notion of a place is an idealization of the bridging space with home and family on one side, and work with the rule-based impersonality of life in mass society, on the other. Like the idea of work-life balance—as seen through the vocabulary of placemaking—third places provide people with a place in which there is a balance between the emotive attachments of home and family and the challenge striving for merit and reward in the marketplace. To date, third places …

Qkan - Management Of Drainage System Data With Qgis, Jörg Höttges
Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference Proceedings
Based on QGIS a database structure and a set of plugins have been developed to improve the workflow for the hydraulic design of urban drainage systems for consulting engineers. The main goal is pre- and postprocessing in combination with various commercial hydraulic simulation software packages. The plugins provide import and export functionalities, simulation result viewing and generation of longitudinal cross sections in a CAD program. All modules make intensive use of SQL based spatial functions instead of functions implemented in QGIS, because of their stability, higher flexibility and speed due to the indexing functionality. On the other hand the database …

Mango (Mangifera indica) is an important, and popular fruit in Bangladesh. However, the post-harvest processing of it is still mostly performed manually, a situation far from satisfactory, in terms of accuracy and throughput. To automate the grading of mangos (geometry and shape), we developed an image acquisition and processing system to extract projected area, perimeter, and roundness features. In this system, images were acquired using a XGA format color camera of 8-bit gray levels using fluorescent lighting. An image processing algorithm based on region based global thresholding color binarization, combined with median filter and morphological analysis was developed …
