Nonlinear Breaking-Wave Characteristics In Lagrangian Coordinates, Wen-Jer Tseng, Chia-Yan Cheng Jun 2020

Nonlinear Breaking-Wave Characteristics In Lagrangian Coordinates, Wen-Jer Tseng, Chia-Yan Cheng

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents a theoretical investigation of nonlinear surface-wave propagation over a sloping bottom. For a problem with nonlinear surface-wave propagation over a sloping bottom, a perturbation method is first used to find the analytical solution in order to derive the third order terms for the bottom slope  and the wave steepness  in the Eulerian system. Then, by transforming the flow field solution from the Eulerian system into the Lagrangian system, a more accurate wave profile is identified. By using the kinematic stability parameter, new theoretical breaking-wave characteristics are derived. The theoretical solutions are then compared with those …

Assessment Of Dynamic Response Of Offshore Jacket Platforms Subjects To Random Waves, Xiaoshuang Han, Weiliang Qiao, Bo Zhou Jun 2020

Assessment Of Dynamic Response Of Offshore Jacket Platforms Subjects To Random Waves, Xiaoshuang Han, Weiliang Qiao, Bo Zhou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents a simplified approach to analyze the dynamic response of offshore jacket platform based on Timoshenko beam theory. In the study, the jacket platform is simulated as a non-uniform cantilever beam structure subjects to random waves. The assessment of dynamic performance is based on the power spectral densities, variances and spectral moments due to wave spectrum. A combination of Pseudo-excitation and Ritz method is proposed and adopted, such as the dynamic characteristics of the jacket platform can be solved more efficiently without a need to examine the modes of vibration. The proposed analytical method also provides a more …

Nonlinear Wave Evolution Above Rectangular Submerged Structures, Jaw-Fang Lee, Lih-Fu Tu, Cheng-Chi Liu Oct 2014

Nonlinear Wave Evolution Above Rectangular Submerged Structures, Jaw-Fang Lee, Lih-Fu Tu, Cheng-Chi Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In this study, an analytic approach for the complete second-order solution proposed by Sulisz and Hudspeth [13] was applied to solve a problem of waves propagating over a rectangular submerged structure. In addition, nonlinear wave evolutions above the submerged structure were studied. The nonlinear problem was expressed up to the second-order boundary value problems by using a Taylor series expansion and the perturbation method. In solving the problem, the nonhomogeneous problem was divided into Stokes wave and free wave counterparts. The solutions of neighboring regions were combined and solved by applying kinematic and dynamic matching conditions. Convergence of the presented …

Impact Characteristics Of Free Over-Fall In Pool Zone With Upstream Bed Slope, Shi-I Liu, Jen-Yan Chen, Yao-Ming Hong, Hung-Shin Huang, Rajkumar V Raikar Aug 2014

Impact Characteristics Of Free Over-Fall In Pool Zone With Upstream Bed Slope, Shi-I Liu, Jen-Yan Chen, Yao-Ming Hong, Hung-Shin Huang, Rajkumar V Raikar

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents the theoretical equations for the impact characteristics of free over-fall (ICFOF) in the pool zone with sloping upstream bed. The various impact characteristics considered are the brink depth, the impact position and impact angle, the tail water depth and the depth of water pool. In order to overcome the complexity in determining the ICFOF, they were expressed in dimensionless forms as functions of upstream bed slope (UBS), upstream Froude number and Drop number. The multiple regression analysis was used to obtain the empirical expressions for the ICFOF using the laboratory experimental results. It was found that the …

Exponential Stability Analysis For Neural Networks With Time-Varying Delay And Linear Fractional Perturbations, Chang-Hua Lien, Ker-Wei Yu Apr 2014

Exponential Stability Analysis For Neural Networks With Time-Varying Delay And Linear Fractional Perturbations, Chang-Hua Lien, Ker-Wei Yu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, the global exponential stability and global asymptotic stability for a class of uncertain delayed neural networks (UDNNs) with time-varying delay and linear fractional perturbations are considered. Delay-dependent and delay-independent criteria are proposed to guarantee the robust stability of UDNNs via linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Additional nonnegative inequality approach is used to improve the conservativeness of the stability criteria. Some numerical examples are illustrated to show the effectiveness of our results. From the simulation results, significant improvement over the recent results can be observed.

Identification Of Pipelines From The Secondary Reflect Wave Travel Time Of Ground-Penetrating Radar Waves, Kun-Fa Lee, Tan-K Wang1, Yu-Ming Kang, Cheng-Sung Wang, Kuo-An Lin Aug 2013

Identification Of Pipelines From The Secondary Reflect Wave Travel Time Of Ground-Penetrating Radar Waves, Kun-Fa Lee, Tan-K Wang1, Yu-Ming Kang, Cheng-Sung Wang, Kuo-An Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

When using ground-penetrating radar to identify underground pipelines of similar dielectric constants (i.e. PE and PVC), misidentification is quite common. In this study, we apply reflected travel time of radar waves into the PE- and PVC- dielectric constants and the differentiation becomes possible. We have conducted the experiments using the nonmetal PE- and PVC- pipelines as well as the heavy metal (iron) pipelines in a water environment. Based on a travel- time calculation, the dielectric constants of non-metal pipelines with similar composition (PE = 2.3 and PVC = 3.0) were quite close. The error between the experimental and theoretical values …

Numerical Investigation On The Effects Of Wave Grouping On The Motion Of Moored Ddms Platform, Xing-Gang Wang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Shu-Xiu Liang, Si Liu, Shu-Xue Liu, Jun-Bin Luo Jun 2013

Numerical Investigation On The Effects Of Wave Grouping On The Motion Of Moored Ddms Platform, Xing-Gang Wang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Shu-Xiu Liang, Si Liu, Shu-Xue Liu, Jun-Bin Luo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The random wave groups with the same wave parameters, such as significant wave height, period and overshoot parameter, but with different wave groupiness are simulated by an empirical wave envelope spectrum involved the group height factor GFH and group length factor GLF based on field measured sea waves. A geometrically nonlinear finite element method based on the total Lagrangian formulation is developed to calculate the mooring-line dynamics. Coupled dynamic analysis of DDMS (Deep Draft Multi-Spar) platform and the attached mooring lines under the action of wave groups with different groupiness in deep water is executed in time domain. The effects …

A Model Of Return Flow Recovery System In Paddy Field Base On Gis, Yu-Chuan Chang, Shih-Yi Fan, Jen-Yan Chen, Chun-E Kan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, return flow in a paddy field was simulated in order to supply reuse water to industries. Field experiment and historical data were obtained for a two-tank model parameter estimation and verification. The selected boundary of paddy fields was identified based on GIS. The simulation results showed that the reasonable reuse flow rate corresponding to the area of 6,036 ha in the first crop season and 1,994 ha in the second crop season. The volumes of the return flow and reuse water are 18.74 × 106 and 15.52 × 106 t, respectively. However, the pattern of rainfall, active …
