Groundwater Pumping Impacts On Stream Depletion In Humboldt County, Ca: Integrating Analytical Models And Field Data, Andy Hans Heise Jan 2025

Groundwater Pumping Impacts On Stream Depletion In Humboldt County, Ca: Integrating Analytical Models And Field Data, Andy Hans Heise

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study addresses the significant concern of stream depletion from groundwater pumping in Humboldt County, CA. The objective of this study is to develop an analytical model for estimating stream depletion and integrating field data into model parameters.

The methodology involved conducting a field study near three operating wells by a stream, installing stream gages upstream and downstream of the wells, and recording pumping rates and schedules for two of the wells. The third well’s pumping data was synthetically generated, for privacy concerns of the well owner. The StreamDepletR package was used for estimating depletion rates in a stream in …

Design Of A Mobile Lamprey Testing Facility And Analysis Of Hydraulic Conditions Under Experimental Treatments, Ernesto Silva Jan 2024

Design Of A Mobile Lamprey Testing Facility And Analysis Of Hydraulic Conditions Under Experimental Treatments, Ernesto Silva

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Few studies have evaluated Pacific lamprey passage at small-scale barriers such as road crossings. The Hoopa Valley Tribe was awarded a grant with the primary objective of assessing lamprey's ability to traverse small-scale barriers. The Hoopa Valley Tribe collaborated with the Environmental Resources Engineering Department at Cal Poly Humboldt to design and implement a mobile testing facility. The testing facility was then used to identify and simulate experimental treatments that would assess lamprey’s ability to pass conditions that are known or expected to be challenging or outright barriers.

A dump trailer equipped with a hydraulic hoist with the ability to …

Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Model Comparison For Fish Habitat Assessment In Rivers, Tyler Caseltine Jan 2024

Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Model Comparison For Fish Habitat Assessment In Rivers, Tyler Caseltine

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Accurate prediction of aquatic habitat availability for salmonids and other aquatic species is crucial for effective river and tributary restoration and management. Two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic models have become the standard for simulating depth and velocity conditions in open channel systems, leveraging advances in computational capabilities and spatial data collection. This study compares four 2D hydrodynamic models—SToRM, River2D, HECRAS2D, and SRH2D—using consistent topographic and calibration data, and adhering to Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) standards as outlined by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and McBain Associates. The models were evaluated with data from two study sites for their …

Mouralherwaqh: Coastal Wetland Road Crossing Da’Luk, Filip Amborski Jan 2024

Mouralherwaqh: Coastal Wetland Road Crossing Da’Luk, Filip Amborski

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The integration of Indigenous and Western science plays an essential role in Tribally led collaborations for land management. This process of woven sciences is rooted in reciprocal relations and partnerships guided by Tribal Nations. Our cohort was invited by Wiyot Tribal Representatives to investigate a culvert located within the wetlands of Mouralherwaqh— a parcel of land reacquired by the Wiyot Tribe in 2022. This document seeks to share our experience and analysis as part of the Wiyot Tribe’s broader journey in navigating ecocultural restoration projects within Mouralherwaqh. The four community interests we investigated for the wetland crossing included a resized …

Hydraulic Assessment Of Traditional And Fish-Friendly Tide Gates In Humboldt Bay, California, Marcela Anne Jimenez Jan 2021

Hydraulic Assessment Of Traditional And Fish-Friendly Tide Gates In Humboldt Bay, California, Marcela Anne Jimenez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Tide gates are common hydraulic structures located throughout coastal and estuarine areas that prevent tidal waves from flooding previously converted tidally influenced areas. As restoration efforts increase, more “fish-friendly” tide gates that allow for larger openings and longer opening periods are being installed to improve habitat for threatened or endangered species. The purpose of this thesis was to determine discharge and head loss coefficients for traditional and side-hinged tide gates that could be inputs for hydraulic models and improve tide gate sizing and design. The study sites included Gannon Slough and US 101 Slough in Humboldt, California that represented a …

An Investigation Of The Hydraulics In A Prototype Pool-And-Chute, Vortex Weir Fishway For Anadromous Fish Passage., Brendan Foster Jan 2017

An Investigation Of The Hydraulics In A Prototype Pool-And-Chute, Vortex Weir Fishway For Anadromous Fish Passage., Brendan Foster

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis presents the hydraulic characteristics and simulated passage efficiency of a hybrid pool-and-chute, vortex weir fishway designed by Michael Love & Associates. A physical 1:15 scale model was constructed and evaluated at an 8% slope over three prototype flow rates representing high and medium fish passage flows. The highest velocities and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) values were concentrated along the fishway centerline at the high and medium flow rate and the pool sides showed lower velocities and TKE. Large eddies spin laterally and longitudinally throughout each pool. The velocity vector directions at the lowest flow rate measured differed from …
