Study Of Fragility Functions For Assessing Damage To Water Pipe Networks Caused By Earthquake Loading, Dylan Joseph Merlo Apr 2021

Study Of Fragility Functions For Assessing Damage To Water Pipe Networks Caused By Earthquake Loading, Dylan Joseph Merlo

Master's Theses

The performance of water lifelines during seismic events is an area of ongoing research. In this study we evaluate eight (8) different seismic events and the impact that ground shaking and ground deformations had on water pipeline systems. The overall goal of this work is to provide municipalities and utility providers with tools for mitigating the consequences of seismic hazards on water lifeline systems by analyzing the accuracy of damage estimation models. Three (3) different repair rate models are evaluated using data collected from the seismic events and compared to observed repair rate data. Results are analyzed to examine the …

Soil Improvement By Electro-Osmotic Consolidation: Laboratory Testing, Yenni Mariana Ramírez-Mazo, Juan Pablo Osorio, Sergio C. Agudelo-Flórez Mar 2021

Soil Improvement By Electro-Osmotic Consolidation: Laboratory Testing, Yenni Mariana Ramírez-Mazo, Juan Pablo Osorio, Sergio C. Agudelo-Flórez

Conference papers

Electro-osmotic consolidation is a ground improvement technique that has been successfully implemented on the field and at laboratory scale since the 30s. However, its application has been done primarily through empirical procedures and experience. The determinant variables in the effectiveness and efficiency of the improvement are numerous and require further studies. This paper presents the evaluation of the improvement process of an inorganic low plasticity clay subjected to a 150 V/m voltage during 5780 minutes. The special analysis of the strains showed differential settlements, as well as cracking at the surface and with depth. The consolidations curves obtained follow the …

Hazard Mapping For Infrastructure Planning In The Arctic, Christopher I. Amaddio Mar 2021

Hazard Mapping For Infrastructure Planning In The Arctic, Christopher I. Amaddio

Theses and Dissertations

Using modern high-resolution aerial photographs, LiDAR, historical aerial photographs, and facility data, a hazard mapping effort identified risks to infrastructure at Thule Air Base, Greenland, based on visible terrain features, surface hydrology, and slope; the distribution of these risks were then compared to existing foundation damage. The analysis indicated abundant and widespread geotechnical hazards at Thule Air Base and a weak relationship to existing foundation damage that requires more research to understand. The resulting hazard maps provide a critical tool for risk assessment and planning as well as a model for other locations to follow.

Strength, Fracture Evolution, And Permeability Changes From Confined Brazilian Tests On Sandstone, Tyler Louis Hagengruber Jan 2021

Strength, Fracture Evolution, And Permeability Changes From Confined Brazilian Tests On Sandstone, Tyler Louis Hagengruber

Civil Engineering ETDs

This research reports on confined Brazilian strength tests and concurrent permeability testing on sandstone. The majority of the tests measured permeability during loading to failure in the confined extension region. Additional testing includes unloading and reloading cycles to detect the development of microcracks and the dependence of permeability on mixed stress conditions. Further testing characterizes fracture networks by observing porosity changes due to microcrack interactions before peak load. All tests involve 5 cm diameter disk-shaped, jacketed samples that are subjected to confining stresses while they are diametrically loaded. Specially designed end caps allow for gas flow measurements. The test configuration …

Numerical Simulation Of Continuous Cone Penetration And Interpretation Of Cptu Dissipation Tests, Andrew Phillip Eugene Huffman Jan 2021

Numerical Simulation Of Continuous Cone Penetration And Interpretation Of Cptu Dissipation Tests, Andrew Phillip Eugene Huffman

Dissertations and Theses

The piezocone penetration test (CPTu) is a commonly used method of geotechnical site investigation. The CPTu is especially useful because it provides a nearly continuous data profile of in-situ soil behavior, which can be correlated to useful engineering parameters. However, limitations exist for interpretation of geotechnical properties from CPTu data and for numerical analysis of cone penetration problems. The research presented in this thesis examines interpretation of coefficient of consolidation from CPTu dissipation test data and implementation of an algorithm to advance numerical simulation of cone penetration problems. This thesis presents analysis of CPTu dissipation responses from field-measured and numerically …

Geophysical Techniques Used For The Analysis And Prediction Of Soil Strength And Mechanical Behavior, Matthew A. Hurley Jan 2021

Geophysical Techniques Used For The Analysis And Prediction Of Soil Strength And Mechanical Behavior, Matthew A. Hurley

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Determining soil properties involves extensive laboratory testing of samples at discrete timing and location. Non-destructive analysis methods, such as electrical and seismic, presents alternatives to means of gathering soil properties accompanied with increased flexibility due to spatial and temporal applications. This research examined the ability of seismic wave data to predict soil behavior such as stress-strain and pore pressures using a modified version of Duncan and Chang (1970). Friction angle predictions were also analyzed using shear wave velocity and a modified form of the Santos and Gomez-Correria (2001) equation. This research also analyzed the use of electrical data to predict …

Ground Movements And Nonlinear-Inelastic Response Of Buildings Induced By Excavations In Glacial Clay Deposits, A. Felipe Uribe-Henao Jan 2021

Ground Movements And Nonlinear-Inelastic Response Of Buildings Induced By Excavations In Glacial Clay Deposits, A. Felipe Uribe-Henao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The analysis of ground movements and nonlinear response of buildings induced by excavations in glacial clay deposits is conducted using finite element models built in PLAXIS2D and OpenSees. PLAXIS2D was used to simulate the performance of an urban cofferdam excavation braced with a concrete bracing system. Measured ground movements were compared with the computed response, and the influence of the temperature, installation, and curing effects on the concrete bracing is evaluated. Concrete time-dependent effects contributed to 32% of the maximum lateral wall movements. The numerical studies are expanded in a second finite element analysis to characterize the coupled fluid-solid response …

  • Une excavation non soutenue de 5 m de profondeur à paroi verticale;
  • Une excavation non soutenue de 4,2 m de profondeur, à paroi talutée (pente de 1,6:1);
  • Une tranchée de 6 m de profondeur soutenue avec une boîte de tranchée …
