The Doha high-rise tower consists of a 4 level basement which required an excavation depth of 16m along the site perimeter. Minimization of impact of excavation-induced ground movements on the adjacent structures and underground utilities was one of the major considerations in the design and construction of the excavation and its temporary retaining system. During the construction of Contract C824 of the Circle Line in Singapore, on 20th April 2004 an 80 m long section of excavation, 30 m deep, totally collapsed. The resulting crater was as deep as 15 metres and was more than 100 m in diameter. Six lanes of the adjacent Nicoll Highway subsided by as much as 13 m. Four construction workers were killed. Fortunately no vehicle was involved. A Committee of Inquiry was established and held hearings from August 2004 until March 2005. The findings of the Committee were published in May 2005. At milestone 3.1 km of the Formosa Freeway in northern Taiwan, a landslide occurred on April 25, 2000, causing nearly 200,000 m3 of earth and rock to slump down onto the freeway below. Four people trapped in cars beneath the collapsed slope died. How such a tremendous slope failure could happen in dry weather without advanced warning is attributed to two key factors: (1) Long-term groundwater infiltration resulting in the softening of thin interlayer between sandstone and shale; (2) Ground anchor corrosion resulting in a decrease in slope stability. In October 2005, during construction works at the new Lippe canal bridge, massive water leakage from the Dortmund-Ems-Canal occurred below a wing wall at the northern abutment of the old, still operated canal bridge. Water passed through a leak of the claylined canal, flowing underneath a pile-supported wing wall into a minor excavation pit. This excavation pit was supposed to be protected by a surcharge filter. Since failure of the lining should be considered for all construction phases, it cannot be regarded as the cause of the disaster. Many levees that make up the Flood Protection system for New Orleans were overtopped and sustained considerable damage. This case history will look at one section of levee in New Orleans East designated LPV (Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity) -111 that is 5.3 miles in length. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake with Mw7.9 induced numerous landslides along the Longmen Mt. zone in Sichuan Province of China. The authors investigated into various influential factors on the slope stability of 119 landslides in Wenchuan County, such as horizontal peak ground acceleration, slope angle, slope height, rock materials and geological structures. The authors developed hanging wall and footwall‟s acceleration attenuation formulae from 115 seismic stations and the formulae confirmed hanging-foot wall effect had notable influence on landslide distribution density and occurrence probability. Earth retaining structures usually need careful monitoring after construction in order to detect any signs of distress. In cases where failure is likely to occur, appropriate remedial techniques need to adopted, backed by a detailed analysis. This paper presents a case study on the rehabilitation of a retaining wall that was constructed for a bypass road project. The structure showed clear signs of distress immediately after completion and hence could not be opened for traffic. In the observational method, gaps in the available information are filled by observations. Such observations were invaluable during the construction of a 54-story building with an 8-story underground parking deck in Charlotte, North Carolina, which required an excavation nearly 100-feet deep into rock. Cracks appeared in an adjacent brick office building by the time the north side of the excavation had reached a depth of about 40 feet. Blast-induced settlement was initially suspected. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Louisville District) conducted a number of full-scale tests to determine the behavior of continuous steel sheet pile flood walls when subjected to hydrostatic loads simulating actual flood conditions. A data set of undrained cyclic triaxial test with parametrically changing relative density and fines content is reviewed and interpreted in the scope of energy. It is found that the strain amplitude or pore-pressure buildup during cyclic loading is uniquely related to the energy dissipated in soil specimens. This further indicates that a RL (cyclic stress ratio)-Nc (number of cycles) line corresponding to specific soil strain represents a line of equal dissipated energy. The Sutong Yangtze River Bridge is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world with main span of 1088 m. The pile cap is 113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m under each pylon and the foundation is super-long large-diameter drilled pile groups consisting of 131 piles with the length of 114/117 m and the diameter of 2.8/2.5m. The seawalls that surround Ellis Island were constructed in the early 1900s and now show varying degrees of deterioration. The approach to the structural repair of the seawalls consisted of installing H-piles and ground anchors for stabilization of vertical and horizontal seawall movements. The H-piles were driven through the retained soils along the seawalls to top of rock. The bridge for Nine Mile Road over Interstate 75 in Hazel Park, Michigan was destroyed by a tanker fire. The loss of the bridge was considered an emergency situation. Therefore, the bridge replacement was put on a fast-track schedule. Geotechnical engineering challenges included the design of shallow and deep foundations, design of light-weight backfill behind abutments, design of temporary earth retention systems to minimize traffic disruption during construction, and coordinating design changes during construction based on variable subsurface conditions. The pressuremeter which was introduced into the U.S. in about 1970 provides the geotechnical engineer with a new tool for measuring soil properties. It is conducted in-situ thereby minimizing sample disturbance. It also tests the soil under the prevailing stress conditions in the soil mass. Measurements of the failure pressure and modulus of the soil are used to predict bearing capacity and settlement. This paper discusses a few commercial projects plus sites where load tests were performed and settlement measurements were obtained for comparison to predictions based upon pressuremeter parameters.
