The Thi Vai Container Port is constructed on reclaimed ground along the Thi Vai River in the Mekong delta approximately 90 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The soil profile consists of an about 15 to 23 m thick deposit of soft, normally consolidated, highly compressible clay deposited on dense to compact sand. A soil improvement scheme was instigated aiming to reduce long-term settlement after construction of the facilities and improve the stability of the river bank. The scheme combined wick drains and, along the river bank, soil cement columns and toe revetments. The wick drains were installed …

This paper describes crack pattern of reinforcement concrete retaining structure due to earthquake. For this reason, the 3-D finite element dynamic analysis of retaining wall structures with consideration of the soil-structure interaction has been used. Purpose of this study is to detect damage zone, due to earthquake in such structures. The analysis data is based on 1995 Kobe and 1994 Northridge earthquake reports, and the results have been verified with some retaining walls were damaged in those earthquakes. The clock tower in city of Prilep, central Macedonia, dates back to the 19th century. With its total height of almost 30 m, it is one of the most remarkable monuments. The anchored quay walls or bulkheads are commonly used in coastal areas. Previous studies on the seismic behavior of these quay walls have shown a significant effect of the liquefaction on the performance of the walls. Considerable length of an anchored sheet pile wall in Rajaii port, Iran, has been embedded in liquefiable sand. This study tries to clarify failure mechanism of the wall during earthquake and to identify more effective zone for improvement of the wall stability. The building of the Military Club is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments within the Bulgarian capital of Sofia. Construction of the club in a New Renaissance style and was initiated in 1895 according to the draft of Antonin Kolar, the famous Czech architect. It was completed in 1907 by Nikola Lazarov, a no less famous Bulgarian architect. Thereafter, a long series of cultural events, important for Bulgarian history were held on in Sofia Military Club. An existing 40 foot diameter sheet pile cell (cell) was used to support a dry fly ash loading platform at an electrical power generating facility on the Ohio River. The cell was designed and constructed in 1986 for support of a coal barge unloading crane but was never put into service. The cell has leaned riverward several inches in the years after construction. Stability analysis indicated a less than adequate overturning factor of safety without any additional loads. The addition of the loading platform could result in an overturning failure. At a retail development site in Southington, Connecticut, a multi-tiered Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall system was constructed in the early 1990’s to facilitate development of the site. Specifically, the retaining wall system constructed consisted of a sloped structure with three tiers of MSE wall that was approximately 56-feet tall at its highest point. The MSE walls within the slope were spaced approximately 30 to 40 feet apart horizontally, were between six and nine feet in height, and ranged in length from about 375 feet to 1,325 feet. O’Connell North Tower at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center (SFHMC), in Hartford, Connecticut in 2008, Building 3, an immediately-adjacent five-story brick masonry building suddenly settled up to 1.5 in. and moved laterally about 5/8-in., resulting in severe cracking of interior and exterior bearing walls and floor slabs. A typical top-down deep excavation project in Shanghai was carefully monitored during the construction process. This case history was back-analysed with a complex 3D FEM numerical model in ABAQUS to investigate the influence of different modelling procedures. The model considered the detailed construction procedures and structural information. The calculations included the small-strain stiffness of the soil and thermal shrinkage of the concrete beams and slabs. Bloomfield Road Stormwater Storage Tanks, owned by United Utilities PLC, were constructed in 1999 in Blackpool UK to provide 60,000m3 of storage to prevent overflow discharges during the summer bathing water season. The asset comprises two buried tanks (36m diameter and 40m deep) constructed as circular diaphragm walls. Significant groundwater inflows with minor fines content and turbidity up to 48l/s have been reported entering one of the tanks since 2001. Addicks and Barker Dams are two flood risk management structures owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and recently classified as extremely high risk. These dams were built in the 1940’s in west Houston, Texas, upstream of a densely populated metropolitan area. The dams consist of 11 and 13 miles of rolled earth embankments, outlet structures with five barrel conduits, and uncontrolled spillways at both ends of both dams. Artificial Ground Freezing was used to provide temporary earth support and groundwater control for a complex system of three frozen earth cofferdams for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District’s Harbor Siphons Project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Site geometry and frozen earth structural design precluded construction of one large excavation, requiring the component system of the tangential cofferdams. High groundwater velocity prevented the formation of the frozen earth walls during various stages of the project. Remedial methods including external dewatering, permeation grouting, jet grouting, timber shoring and sheet piling were attempted to complete the project. The static and seismic safety evaluation of the 115 m high Koman concrete face rockfill dam, located at the Drin river in Albania has been checked according to the current state-of-practice for the seismic safety evaluation of large embankment dams. For the dynamic analyses with the equivalent linear method a two-dimensional model of the highest dam section was used. The paper presents a slope stability analysis of a proposed embankment contained within an abandoned coal mine reclamation project near Sallisaw, Oklahoma. The project involved the use of computer modeling to analyze the slope stability of the earth-filled embankment. The project plans call for mine spoils and silty-clay borrow materials is used to construct a 74,000 cubic yard embankment, which will be used as a water impoundment for a small lake. Lee County widened Mississippi River Road north of the Keokuk, Iowa in the early 1990s, removing material from the toe of slopes along the alignment. Gabion walls were constructed to provide grade separation. Significant precipitation occurred in the spring of 2010, and two (2) wall sections (about 100 feet each in length) failed. The proposed power project site on the South East coast of India required the construction of breakwaters to prevent detrimental effects owing littoral drift along the coast and also to protect the intake channel lining against sea attack. This paper describes the geotechnical design and analysis for breakwater facility proposed for the site. The preliminary design of breakwater was carried out using raw geotechnical data made available in form of the few boreholes investigation and SPT N-values. This presentation aims at providing an informative fact-based description of the complex reasons resulting in dam ruptures. The investigations focus on the tragic damage of red mud reservoir No. 10 in Ajka and restrict itself to the engineering aspects of the damage. The analysis of the direct and indirect reasons for the tragic incident may serve as a lesson to our engineers and specialists as well as provide guidelines and revelations with the intention of improvement while emphasizing the necessity of deeper comprehension. The accidental topography and heterogeneous Lebanese geology in addition to the active seismicity have initiated the static and dynamic stability analysis of Lebanese slopes. In this paper, the stability of a sandy Lebanese slope situated at Mansourieh near Beirut is investigated using deterministic and probabilistic approaches.
