Taiwan is located in the conjunction area between Eurasia Plate and Philippine Sea Plate. As a result, the geology condition of the island is complex and the earthquake activity is frequent. On September 21, 1999, a severe earthquake (ML = 7.3) hit Chi-chi Town and resulted in significant damages and casualties in the mid-west plain of Taiwan. The alluvial deposits of Tzuoswei River, the largest river system of the island, had also experienced serious liquefaction damages during the shaking. The aim of the study was to as-sess the potential of liquefaction and the associated post-liquefaction settlement of the area. …

We describe the use of Google Earth during and after a large damaging earthquake that struck the central Japan coast on 16 July 2007 to collect and organize damage information and guide the reconnaissance activities. This software enabled greater real-time collaboration among scientists and engineers. After the field investigation, the Google Earth map is used as a final reporting product that was directly linked to the more traditional research report document. Finally, we analyze the use of the software within the context of a post-disaster reconnaissance investigation, and link it to student use of Google Earth in field situations.

Water front structures have suffered significant damage in many of the recent earthquakes. One of the primary causes for the poor performance of these classes of structures is the liquefaction of the foundation soil and in some instances liquefaction of the backfill soil. The liquefaction of the soil in-front of the quay wall tends to cause large lateral displacements and rotation of the wall. Microtremor method is the most inexpensive and convenient technique for dynamic site characterization of sedimentary basins. This study was carried out in Delhi NCR at 144 different stations and field measurements were taken using velocity sensors for a period of 1 hr at each station point. The data was analyzed using VIEW 2002 software for the estimation of fundamental resonance frequency. Liquefaction of water-saturated sandy soils remains a major concern in geotechnical earthquake engineering. Experience from past earthquakes indicates that large lateral spreads and flow slides in sand deposits have taken place in coastal and river areas not only during shaking but also some time after earthquake shaking ceases. The ground slopes in these slides were often gentler than a few percent. Recent research including physical model tests and numerical investigations indicates that the presence of a low permeability silt or clay layer as a hydraulic barrier may be responsible for some of the historical and seemingly unexplainable landslides. An initial investigation of soil liquefaction sites from the July, 28 1976 Tangshan M7.8 earthquake was conducted between 1976 and 1978 by the National Ministry of Railways, China. These data are the basis of the ‘Chinese Method’ for assessment of liquefaction potential of silty-sand deposits, and are an important component of the worldwide data set for modern probabilistic methods for assessment of soil liquefaction using Bayesian updating and system reliability tools. Blasting test studies have one drawback with regard to earthquake studies; they are concerned with vibrations of much smaller amplitude than those normally encountered in earthquakes. Consequently, blasting studies can be used to calibrate dam behavior in a linear elastic range. Accuracy of numerical models should be improved by full scale tests and in situ earthquake records. The successful operation of facilities that incorporate long electron-positron beams necessitates a very low vibration environment at the beam supports. Mitigation of the ground motion and imported vibration from the numerous vibrations sources is the main engineering challenge for these projects. One of the largest development projects in the City of Beirut involved the excavation of an area of 14,000m2 down to a depth of 30m below street level. The site is in an urban area and bound by major traffic arteries and a multi-storey office building. Soil nailing can be used for retaining both temporary and permanent excavations. One of the successful applications of this technique includes the Singapore expressway project (Raju, 1996). As a part of this research work, one project of soil nailing has been completed in M/s Hero Cycles Industries, Ludhiana, India, where nailing has been used for stabilization of steel columns footings, meant for electrically operated gantry crane. Automatic SPT hammers typically provide more transferred energy to drill rods than traditional safety hammers. This results in lower measured blow-counts from automatic hammers when compared to safety hammers. To eliminate such deviations in blow-counts, quality assurance for licensing new generation nuclear power plants requires that SPT energy measurements be made for each hammer used so that blow-counts can be corrected and be appropriately used in foundation design. In this paper, the dynamic behavior and foundation improvement of a K10-type compressor with maximum horizontal load of 1800 KN, operating at 3.3 Hz (200 rpm) located at top of a concrete foundation is studied. The vibration measurements (acceleration, velocity, and displacement) of the compressor and its foundation have been recorded before and after cement pressure grouting. In brief, the maximum displacement before cement injection exceeded the specified values by the manufacturer. Therefore, the existing pile-soil-foundation system needed to be improved. This paper presents design and construction aspects of two similar circular Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) impoundment basins in deep soft clays. Each basin has a design spill containment volume of 70,630 cubic feet. The inside diameter of each basin is 60 ft; bottom of the excavation is 32 ft below grade and the excavation retained permanently by concrete secant pile walls. The stresses however depend upon the shape of the opening and the residual stresses. This paper presents a case history of Lean Concrete Column (LCC) design, prediction, installation, and monitoring for a 34-story high-rise condominium tower over a five-level underground parking substructure supported on a mat foundation in San Diego, California. The site constraints and the building configuration imposed unusual design and construction challenges, which resulted in high foundation pressures and eccentric loading for the planned building mat foundation. The paper describes the mechanical behaviour of double porosity clay fills. A trial embankment had been constructed on a 20-30 year-old landfill and monitored for 3 years. The embankment was instrumented by hydrostatic levelling profiles, surveying reference points, pore pressure gauges, inclinometers and depth reference points. Centrifuge modelling of the embankment behaviour on the consolidated landfill was carried out in the geotechnical centrifuge at ETH Zürich in Switzerland. Jamnagar district of Gujarat is having 355 km long irregular coast line. The district is bounded by Gulf of Kachchh in the north and Arabian Sea in the west and southwest. The precipitation in the area is low and climate is semi arid. Rivers flowing in the area are ephemeral. Ground water occurs in unconfined and semi-confined state. Major central part of the area is occupied by Deccan basalt, western part by marine Tertiary rocks, northern and western coastal area by Quaternary sediments. In this study the simplified model tests that simulate air injection into saturated soils using air-injection probes, are conducted using the two different sizes of soil containers. The experiments using the small container are aimed to examine the rates and magnitudes of the soil desaturation driven by air injection, whilst those with the large container are performed to obtain not only the rates and magnitudes but also the distributions of the desaturated zones within the soil, and to examine influences on the desaturation process exerted by anisotropy of the soil in terms of flow transport.
