The presence of clay seams in the roof is especially important for assessing the stability of the excavations in salt and potash mines, since they allow separation as well as horizontal slip. The deformational behavior at clay seams in the roof of excavations was investigated by using actual field measurements made at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WlPP) site. From the in situ deformation measurements, the separation and separation rate across the clay seams in the roof and floor could be estimated by using the technique developed in this study. A series of 20 small diameter drilled and grouted micropiles were installed at three different depths in a stiff surficial clay crust at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site in Amherst, Massachusetts. A detailed site characterization program was performed to evaluate· the soil characteristics in the crust. Three different sizes of micropiles ranging in diameter from 76 mm to 152 mm and having lengths from 1.52 m to 4.57 m were installed vertically at the site using both continuous flight augers and hand auger techniques. This paper contains illustrative case histories of the principal "forensic lessons" learned from multidisciplinary postearthquake investigations [United States Geological Survey, 1993] of damaging earthquakes throughout the world. Since 1980, the most notable earthquakes include those that struck Kobe, Japan in 1995, Northridge, California in 1994, Hokkaido-Nansei-Oki, Japan and Khalari, India in 1993, Landers, California and Erzincan, Turkey in 1992, Costa Rica in 1991, the Philippines in 1990, Lorna Prieta, California in 1989, Spitak, Armenia in 1988, Mexico in 1985, and El Asnam, Algeria and Irpinia, Italy in 1980. The effects of anisotropy and sample disturbance on the consolidation parameters were investigated through laboratory testing, and the degree of sample disturbance on the consolidation parameters in the periphery of the drain is evaluated. A new method for settlement analysis, taking into consideration both sample disturbance and the retardation of the consolidation in the ground improved by vertical drain, is proposed. This case history demonstrates the use of electromagnetic (EM) induction methods to examine known seepage locations and then predict future ones along the Herbert Hoover Dike (HHD) in south central Florida. The HHD forms an embankment dam 20 to 30 feet high and 140 miles long surrounding Lake Okeechobee. Approximately 26 miles of embankment was surveyed with EM induction. The objective of the EM survey was to identify active and potential foundation seepage locations and conduits. Settlement prediction of solid waste landfills is important for their post-closure operation. Estimation of settlement of refuse is complex because of the mechanism of settlement and heterogeneity of the refuse. Several methods are available to predict the settlement of solid waste landfills. Based on the analysis of published measured data of four landfills, a unique relationship was recently developed between reference compressibility and rate of compression to predict refuse settlement using Power Creep Law. In this paper, foundation damage of structures in the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake was overviewed, mainly focusing on that of bridges and elevated highways, port and harbor facilities and buildings. Then, the remediation methods and works for damaged foundations were summarized, together with illustrating some examples. Finally, essentials of related subjects and suggestions on seismic design and remediation for foundations of structures were summarized for a further study.

Man-made vibrations caused by construction activities, blasting, rail and vehicular traffic, and machinery can have an adverse impact on buildings and facilities, human occupants of buildings, and sensitive equipment housed within these facilities. Comparisons between vibrations are often difficult because of different methods used to measure, analyze, and interpret vibration data. To facilitate these comparisons, standard methods of selecting and mounting transducers, processing vibration data, and interpreting test results are reviewed. Benaroya Hall, the new home of the Seattle Symphony, is located directly over an old railroad tunnel in downtown Seattle. The railroad tunnel was hand excavated in the early 1900s; the tunnel excavation caused considerable settlement of the buildings and streets above. The tunneling disturbance and subsequent rotting of timber supports resulted in numerous voids in the vicinity of the tunnel. Excavation for the Benaroya Hall removed up to 55 feet of soil overburden and came to within 12 feet of the tunnel crown. A very large mobile crane was used to lift a 3,150 kN steam generator through the roof of the containment building of a nuclear power plant. The maximum load on the crane was 19.8 MN, giving a track pressure of almost 600 kPa. Soil conditions were stiff clay underlain by softer clay. This paper describes the bearing capacity and settlement analysis performed to establish a suitable shallow foundation for the crane. The foundation load test confirmed that soil conditions had been adequately defined and that the foundation design was satisfactory.

The near surface limestones in Qatar have complex lithologies and have experienced diagenetic changes after deposition. A variety of weak limestones have been encountered in combination with matrix material (rock fragments and secondary fraction). The matrix, often clayey, sometimes cemented with gypsum, anhydrite or calcite grains, is not a rock nor does it qualify as a soil. These materials are: (i) difficult to sample in the undisturbed state. (ii) extremely variable m composition and proprieties, and (iii) appear susceptible to degradation, particularly when wet. We conducted a grouting test in rock mass having steep joints with predominant direction, assuming blanket grouting for embankment dams. Vertical holes and inclined holes designed in consideration of the predominant direction of the joints were used as grouting holes, and the hole spacing was determined such that the number of grouting holes per unit area on a joint was the same for both cases. Six events of landslides occurred simultaneously on weathered Andesitic Breccia in Samigaluh Area, following the heavy rainfall. Field investigation, laboratory works and slope stability analysis were carried out to assess the mechanism of the failures, their controlling factor and identify the triggering rainfall characteristics. It was found that the rainfall was the key factor inducing the failure. However, further investigation which incorporates slope hydrodynamic numerical modeling is still required, in order to find the triggering rainfall characteristics. A simple solution technique for evaluating the response of a surface or embedded foundation under vertical vibrations in a homogeneous soil has been developed. The effects of soil nonlinearity on shear modulus and material damping, frequency on stiffness and radiation damping, and embedment of foundation on stiffness and radiation damping have been considered. A computer program has been developed based on the Elastic Half Space (EHS) analog technique (Lysmer and Richart, 1966), to compute the response amplitude of both surface and embedded footings. The advances in landfill engineering are outlined based on a number of case histories illustrating past problems, hydraulic performance of clay liners, diffusive transport through liners, hydraulic containment and clogging of leachate collection systems. The importance of conventional geotechnical considerations (e.g. stability) will also be highlighted with reference to a number of cases. Finally, the recent advances in landfill operations are illustrated with respect to a modern landfill. It is concluded that, provided all key failure mechanisms are considered in the design, construction and operation of the facility, modern landfills should provide environmental protection both today and well into the …

An overview is presented on seismic performance of rigid and flexible retaining walls based on case histories during earthquakes, notably from the 1995 Kobe earthquake. Three critical issues are discussed out of these case histories: (l) If the effects of an earthquake motion are approximated in terms of a pseudo-static inertia force using the Mononobe-Okabe equation, the equivalent seismic coefficient for evaluating gross stability of retaining walls should be less than 100 %, about 60 % on average, of a peak ground acceleration specified as a fraction of gravity (amax/g); (2) Liquefaction or excess pore water pressure increase …

This paper describes the performance of a fully instrumented test barrette subjected to an ultimate loading of 30932 kN. The load transfer characteristics were measured by vibrating wire strain gauges. Rod extensometers recorded the displacements at several locations along the barrette shaft. Test results indicated that substantial loads were carried in shaft resistance. The end bearing component was reduced by poor toe conditions caused by debris accumulation at the trench base.
