Red clay distributes widely in China, it can be classified into two kinds: swell- shrinking and non-swell-shrinking red clay. According to the strong strength and low compressibility features of the Expansive-contractive Red Clay (ECRC), it can be used as an excellent natural ground. Sometimes its swell- shrinkage property may cause crack damage to the low house which based on the ECRC. This rupture is quite common and serious, the crack house became dangerous and had to be rebuilt. This paper discusses the causes of damage of a broadcasting transmission station suffered from settlement cracks. The station buildings were low-rise reinforced concrete structures with isolated footings founded on alluvial deposit. Investigations revealed that the main causes of the observed nonuniform settlement were the existence of silt pockets below some footings, and the shrinkage of clayey soils due to dryness of the subsoil after ceasing the cultivation of land and using it as construction site. Rehabilitation scheme included structural repair of the cracked columns, beams and walls, and injection grouting of the foundation soil beneath the settled columns.

In the paper is presented a history of the long-term process of deformations and damages to a five-storied apartment building in Gliwice, one located over a thick lens of a young, very weak peat deposit. The evolution of deformations is defined by changes in time of representative foundation movement components (the angular distortion, deflection ratio, etc.). Relationships given and analysed in the paper are based on the results of settlement monitoring preformed since 1970, and failure escalation descriptions make use of crack documentations included in the expert opinions. Based on dynamic and static formulas and loading tests analysis of bearing capacity of type Vibro-Fundex driven piles is presented. The piles were embedded into noncohesive soils of various origin and degree of compaction. Using this analysis and performed investigations, the lengths of piles designed on the basis of static formulae have been corrected for safety transferring of loads into subsoil.

The authors have proposed a method for evaluation of vertical bearing capacity of bored friction pile which might be capable to reflect the uncertainty of soil properties on the evaluation. The rationality of the method is examined from the application to the bridge design in this paper. A Major port in India had six cargo berths and a seventh one was to be added to cater for the heavy cargo traffic. The top layer of the soil along the berth was 20 m thick soft and sensitive marine silty clay with an average shear strength of 2 tons/Sqm. The design provided for a berth 342 m long. The paper describes the foundation investigation for the Clark Bridge Replacement, which spans the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois. The subsurface investigation and the design considerations leading to the foundation piling selection are detailed. The construction performances of the selected H-piles and composite piles are described, including the use of pre-construction wave equation analyses to predict the performance of proposed pile hammers, and the use of the dynamic pile driving analyzer during construction to limit driving stresses and prevent pile damage.

Mat foundations constructed in impermeable soils with a high groundwater table will experience a substantially high buoyancy force due to hydrostatic pressure. Conventional solutions to this problem are to increase the structural weight or install piles or anchors to counterbalance the uplift. These methods are costly, inefficient, and time-consuming. The observed pore pressures and deformations induced by an earth balance shield used to construct the Furongjiang sewer tunnel in soft saturated ground in Shanghai, China, are briefly described. Continuous records of immediate surface settlements and ground movements were obtained as the tunnel face approaching and moving away from the observation points. A correlation between resulting heave/settlements and driving force is observed. A finite element technique for predicting these pore pressures and deformations is developed. Results from nineteen full-scale axial load tests are reviewed to compare methods for predicting axial capacities of drilled shafts using results of Cone Penetration Tests (CPT). The three methods to estimate failure loads are: (1) Nottingham method, (2) Laboratoire des Ponts et Chaussees method (LPC), and (3) the Poulos and Davis method. Comparisons are made to assess the accuracy and dependability of each predictive method. Analyses of results indicate that the LPC method provides the most reliable predictions for axial capacities of drilled shafts in clay.

The reanalysis is required to suggest if the existing foundation of the unit would be capable enough to withstand an additional pressure intensity to which it would be subjected due to proposed expansion of the unit. Various methods of foundation treatment had been adopted in the design of different parts of the plant according to its particular needs respectively. The adopted methods include: selecting rational depth of foundation; increasing pressure on the base of foundation; replacement of soils; sand mat; pier foundation and large diameter cast-in-place piles. In addition to the foundation treatments, measures were also taken to prevent the infiltration of water and to protect the moisture of sub-soils. Construction of the first phase of the South Parking Garage at the Tampa International Airport in Florida was completed in December 1991. A full-scale field load testing program was used in design of the drilled shaft foundations, with specific goals of determining the bond strength and characterizing the load-displacement behavior of the rock sockets. The displacement behavior and bond strength of the test shafts were predicted from elastic solutions and semiempirical methods. A large and complex landslide in marine shales is impacting the approach roadway and a 4600-ft long bridge carrying U.S. Route 212 over the Oahe Reservoir at Forest City, South Dakota. After extensive investigation and analyses it was determined that the main landslide could be remediated by unloading the slide using a large cut through the escarpment located upslope from the bridge.
