Liquefaction-Induced Dragload And/Or Downdrag On Deep Foundations Within The New Madrid Seismic Zone, Ishimwe Elvis
Liquefaction-Induced Dragload And/Or Downdrag On Deep Foundations Within The New Madrid Seismic Zone, Ishimwe Elvis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Deep foundation elements are typically used to transfer structural loads for multi-story buildings and large-span bridges to a competent soil layer when 1) the soil close to the ground surface has no sufficient bearing capacity, and when 2) liquefiable soils are encountered. The majority of the bridges constructed within seismic zones rely upon the stability of earthen embankments and deep foundation that are installed above or within liquefiable soil deposits. Despite large factor of safety values or different load and resistance factors being used to adequately design deep foundations within seismic areas, soil liquefaction may cause extensive damage to the …
The Intrinsic Properties Of Reconstituted Soils, Nabeel Shaker Mahmood
The Intrinsic Properties Of Reconstituted Soils, Nabeel Shaker Mahmood
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Reconstituted specimens are often utilized to characterize engineering properties of cohesive soils. A series of undrained triaxial tests were conducted on reconstituted soil specimens to evaluate 1) the influence of stress path, 2) the intrinsic shear strength behavior, and 3) the small-strain characteristics. The stress path tests were conducted on kaolinite specimens reconstituted from slurries with water content values of one and one-half times the liquid limit of the soil (1.5LL). To evaluate the intrinsic undrained shear strength and the intrinsic small-strain properties, the triaxial tests were performed on kaolinite and illite specimens that were reconstituted at two levels of …

Development Of A Hydraulic Conductivity Placement Window Using Centrifuge Techniques, Greg Thomas
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
A centrifuge soil testing device, currently operated by researchers at the University of Arkansas, was used to develop a technique to determine a hydraulic conductivity placement window. The purpose of this research was to develop a placement window by means of a centrifuge instead of by means of a panel board. Soil specimens were created at standard PRcotor energy and at 50 percent of Standard Proctor energy at -3 percent of optimum, -1.5 percent of optimum, two specimens at optimum, +1.5 percent of optimum, and +3 percent of optimum water content. Values of hydraulic conductivity for the respective specimens were …
Development Of An Internal Camera-Based Volume Determination System For Triaxial Testing, Sean Elliott Salazar
Development Of An Internal Camera-Based Volume Determination System For Triaxial Testing, Sean Elliott Salazar
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Accurate measurement of axial, radial, and volumetric strain parameters are critical to the understanding of phase relationships and the constitutive behavior for saturated and unsaturated soils. The use of photographic monitoring techniques for laboratory-based measurement of these parameters have become common. A novel technique that utilized camera instrumentation located within the triaxial testing cell was developed and validated. By placing the instrumentation inside of the cell, instead of the instrumentation being located outside of the cell, the technique eliminated cumbersome corrections required to account for optical distortions due to 1) the refraction of light at the confining fluid-cell wall-atmosphere interfaces, …
Cost-Savings Of Implementing Site-Specific Ground Motion Response Analysis In Design Of Mississippi Embayment Bridges, Ethan Ryan Benton Baker
Cost-Savings Of Implementing Site-Specific Ground Motion Response Analysis In Design Of Mississippi Embayment Bridges, Ethan Ryan Benton Baker
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Deep dynamic site characterization and a site-specific ground motion response analysis (SSGMRA) were conducted for a bridge site in Monette, Arkansas. The SSGMRA indicated the design acceleration response spectrum determined using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) general seismic procedure could be reduced by 1/3 for the short period range due to attenuation of the short-period ground motions. The steel girder pile-bent bridge, originally designed using the AASHTO general seismic design procedure, was redesigned using the updated seismic demands estimated from SSGMRA. A cost-savings analysis was then conducted to determine the potential savings associated with conducting …

The methods utilized to determine the hydraulic conductivity of compacted clay liners (CCLs) are of importance for safe guarding the environment from landfill leachate. Therefore, the methods utilized in the analysis of the Two Stage Borehole (TSB) test, as described in the ASTM D6391-11 (Method A, B, and C) standard, were evaluated. Data from hydraulic conductivity tests, as performed on three test pads, were utilized to review the ASTM D6391-11 equations. Additionally, two test pads were instrumented with volumetric water content and soil water matric potential sensors to facilitate the determination of field-obtained soil water characteristic curves (SWCCs) and hydraulic …
Dem Study Of A Single Stone Column In A Clayey Stratum, Anibal Enrique Santos
Dem Study Of A Single Stone Column In A Clayey Stratum, Anibal Enrique Santos
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Aggregate piers are an alternative ground improvement technique used for improving the bearing capacity and reducing the total and differential settlement of foundations supported on compressible soils. The piers are composed of a series of vibrationally compacted aggregate lifts from a desired depth up to the finished foundation level. The shear strength of the coarse-grained material comprising an aggregate pier is defined by its internal friction angle. There are several factors affecting the friction angle of the granular material that include: confining stress, particle shape, relative density and particle distribution (gradation). These factors are not directly considered in the design …
Soil-Structure Interaction Effects On The Seismic Response Of Low-Rise Eccentrically Braced Frames, Luis Gerardo Buitrago Goyez
Soil-Structure Interaction Effects On The Seismic Response Of Low-Rise Eccentrically Braced Frames, Luis Gerardo Buitrago Goyez
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The importance of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects on the seismic response of buildings has been long recognized and has been researched for over 40 years. However, SSI analysis has only been applied in a few building projects because the fixed base condition is considered to provide a conservative estimation for the response of buildings under seismic loads. This assumption of a fixed base condition adopted by practitioners is not always conservative or cost-effective, especially for rigid buildings over soft soils. Additionally, for the case of ductile steel frames with eccentric configurations, the influence of SSI on their seismic performance has …
Laboratory Resistivity Measurements For Soil Characterization, Behdad Mofarraj Kouchaki
Laboratory Resistivity Measurements For Soil Characterization, Behdad Mofarraj Kouchaki
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Field based electrical resistivity measurements, such as electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and capacitively coupled resistivity (CCR), are geophysical methods that offer a non-destructive and rapid means to collect continuous data. As such, ERT and CCR are becoming increasingly popular tools for geotechnical engineers; however, it is challenging to derive geotechnical information such as soil type, density, and water content from the data. A laboratory geophysical investigation was carried out to gain a better understanding of the parameters that affect the electrical resistivity of soils and devise a relationship between resistivity and soil type or classification. In this study, a soil …

Development Of Deep Site Specific And Reference Shear Wave Velocity Profiles In The Canterbury Plains, New Zealand, Michael Ryan Deschenes
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Deep (typically >1000 m) shear wave velocity profiles were developed across the Canterbury basin at nine strong motion stations using a combination of active and passive surface wave methods and horizontal to vertical spectral ratio measurements. A multi-mode, multi-method joint inversion process, which included Rayleigh and Love wave dispersion and horizontal to vertical spectral ratio data, was used to estimate the shear wave velocity profiles at each site. A-priori geologic information was utilized in defining preliminary constraints on the complex geologic layering of the Canterbury basin. At sites where interbedded layers were present, velocity reversals were considered in the inversion. …

Geophysical Assessment Of Kinion Lake Dam, Tim Allen Moody
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Geophysical methods including Capacitively-Coupled Resistivity (CCR), Electrical Resistivity Tomography/Imaging (ERT/ERI), Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) with Love and Rayleigh waves and a Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) were performed on Kinion Lake Dam, an earth-filled embankment dam that has historically experienced significant seepage and internal erosion issues. Surveys were completed along the crest and downstream toe of the dam. Results from the surveys indicate that each method is capable of resolving the bedrock depth within 1-2 m of locations shown on previous drilling logs, though some discrepancies between the methods exist. A weathered bedrock layer is believed to have led to …
Feasibility Of Additive Manufactured Materials For Use In Geotechnical Laboratory Testing Applications, Matthew P. Watters
Feasibility Of Additive Manufactured Materials For Use In Geotechnical Laboratory Testing Applications, Matthew P. Watters
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The factors affecting the positive volumetric strain, or dilatancy, typically observed in response to shearing of a dense granular material have long been investigated; however, there still lacks a direct relationship between particle shapes and the resulting dilatant response. The typical Mohr-Coulomb strength parameter associated with granular material is known as the effective friction angle (φ’). For a dense granular assemblage, the peak friction angle has been described as being comprised of a dilatant friction angle (φ’d) component and a critical state friction angle (φ’cv) component. While the topic of dilatancy and factors (both inherent and extrinsic) affecting its behavior …

Comparative Analysis Of Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames In Eccentric Configuration (Brbf-Es) And Eccentrically Braced Frames (Ebfs), Peter T. Vayda
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Continuing on the findings of “Using Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames in Eccentric Configuration,” by Dr. Gary S. Prinz, P.E., which determined that, from a performance standpoint, BRBF-Es could be a viable alternative for EBFs. A comparative analysis was conducted on the design procedures and initial cost estimates of BRBF-Es and EBFs. Upon designing four 12-Story buildings (two BRBF-Es and two EBFs), it was determined that BRBF-Es were easier to design due to the statically determinant system. The initial costs estimates of BRBF-Es; however, ranged upwards of 30% more cost than EBFs. Therefore, the initial investment of more intensive structural engineering design …
Amount Of Uncertainty In The Methods Utilized To Design Drilled Shaft Foundations, Morgan Race
Amount Of Uncertainty In The Methods Utilized To Design Drilled Shaft Foundations, Morgan Race
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 2001, load and resistance factor design (LRFD) for deep foundations was required by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Following implementation of LRFD, localized calibration of resistance factors using data from the states of Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana/Mississippi, Missouri allowed these states to utilize higher resistance factors during design. However, characterizing the uncertainty in the design of DSF, regarding the geotechnical investigation methods and the utilized software programs, higher values of resistance factors may be calibrated to more efficiently design DSF with the same level of reliability.

Alkali-Silica Reaction Mitigation Using High Volume Class C Fly Ash, Sydney Marie Dickson
Alkali-Silica Reaction Mitigation Using High Volume Class C Fly Ash, Sydney Marie Dickson
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Fly ash is the residue produced from coal combustion in electric generating plants. There are two types of fly ash, Class C and Class F. Approximately 40 percent of fly ash generated from coal combustion can be used as a partial replacement of cement in concrete. Incorporating fly ash improves concrete properties and extends its service life. Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is an expansive reaction between reactive silica typically found in aggregates (rock and sand) and alkalis in cement. This reaction results in the formation of a gel that absorbs water and swells, which exerts an internal pressure in concrete. This …
A Study Of The Influence Of Particle Gradation In Bonded Assemblies, Matthew P. Watters
A Study Of The Influence Of Particle Gradation In Bonded Assemblies, Matthew P. Watters
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The discrete element method (DEM) has been used extensively to study soil, rock, and masonry behavior because of its ability to model the materials as individual particles or bonded clumps of particles. DEM allows for examination of the macro- and micro-scale response and provides a means to study the fundamental material behavior, but it is still considered computationally expensive in relation to other methods. To lower computational costs, the smallest particle sizes are often considered negligible and are left out of the model. Additionally, rock or intact materials are often modeled as a bonded assembly of uniform spheres. To date, …
Reliability-Based Design And Acceptance Protocol For Driven Piles, Joseph Jabo
Reliability-Based Design And Acceptance Protocol For Driven Piles, Joseph Jabo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current use of the Arkansas Standard Specifications for Highway Construction Manuals (2003, 2014) for driven pile foundations faces various limitations which result in designs of questionable reliability. These specifications are based on the Allowable Stress Design method (ASD), cover a wide range of uncertainties, do not take into account pile and soil types, and were developed for general use. To overcome these challenges it is deemed necessary to develop a new design and acceptance protocol for driven piles. This new protocol incorporates locally calibrated RLFD resistance factors for accounting for local design and construction experiences and practices, as well …
Calibration Of Resistance Factors For Driven Piles Using Static And Dynamic Tests, Deshinka A. Bostwick
Calibration Of Resistance Factors For Driven Piles Using Static And Dynamic Tests, Deshinka A. Bostwick
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The field of geotechnical engineering has evolved from Allowable Stress Design (ASD) to Load Factor and Resistance Design (LRFD) which has led to a need to quantify the measures of uncertainty and the level of reliability associated with a project. The measures of uncertainty are quantified by load and resistance factors, while the level of reliability is driven by the amount of risk an owner is willing to take and is quantified by the reliability index. The load factors are defined through structural design codes, but the resistance factors have uncertainties that can be mitigated through reliability based design. The …

The results of high stress, one-dimensional compression testing on intermediate soils are presented. Nevada Sand and silica silt mixtures were subjected to very high vertical stresses (140 MPa) in one-dimensional, monotonic compression. Each soil mixture was tested in a nominally loose condition. A specially designed mold with an integrated sensor array was fabricated to contain the soil during pre-consolidation and loading. The 1-D compression curve was plotted for each mixture in the double-logarithmic void ratio (e), and vertical effective stress (σ’v) space and characteristics of the Limiting Compression Curve (LCC) were identified. Initial and post test grain size distribution curves …
Analysis Of Aggregate Distribution In Self-Consolidating Concrete, Brendan Ho
Analysis Of Aggregate Distribution In Self-Consolidating Concrete, Brendan Ho
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Concrete consists of several key ingredients: cement, water, and coarse and fine aggregate. Depending on the proportions of these ingredients, the strength and workability of a concrete mix can be affected adversely. Segregation is the separation of aggregate and cement paste, resulting in a lack of homogeneity. Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) does not require traditional consolidation; however, it can be affected by segregation. This project examines different SCC mixtures and establishes ranges of values for slump flow, T20 , Visual Stability Index (VSI), J-ring flow and J-ring flow spread that ensures proper aggregate distribution and therefore reduces the potential of segregation. …
