Hydrologic Variations Within Created And Natural Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Aaron Dyer Despres
Hydrologic Variations Within Created And Natural Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Aaron Dyer Despres
OES Theses and Dissertations
The hydrology of wetlands, particularly how wetland soils collect, store, and redistribute water strongly affects how wetland systems function. In created wetlands, construction processes and materials influence the hydrology and consequently, the potential for successful reestablishment of target vegetation communities. During 2002–2004, the Virginia Department of Transportation constructed large mitigation wetlands on two different Quaternary aged surfaces with very similar hydrogeomorphic conditions. The Sandy Bottom Nature Park site (SBNP) located in Hampton, VA and rests on the sandy loam Tabb Formation while the Charles City Wetland site (CCW) lies on the older and clay-rich Shirley Formation. This study documents and …

Alternative Principal Components Regression Procedures For Dendrohydrologic Reconstructions, Hugo G. Hidalgo, Thomas C. Piechota, John A. Dracup
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
Streamflow reconstruction using tree ring information (dendrohydrology) has traditionally used principal components analysis (PCA) and stepwise regression to form a transfer function. However, PCA has several procedural choices that may result in very different reconstructions. This study assesses the different procedures in PCA-based regression and suggests alternative procedures for selection of variables and principal components. Cross-validation statistics are presented as an alternative for independently testing and identifying the optimal model. The objective is to use these statistics as a measure of the model's performance to find a conceptually acceptable model with a low prediction error and the fewest number of …

Impact Of Erosion, Mass Wasting, And Sedimentation On Human Activities In The Río Grande Basin, Jujuy Province, Argentina, Waldo Chayle, William J. Wayne
Impact Of Erosion, Mass Wasting, And Sedimentation On Human Activities In The Río Grande Basin, Jujuy Province, Argentina, Waldo Chayle, William J. Wayne
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Nearly all dry mountainous regions are affected by severe erosion, floods, and debris flows during times of intense precipitation. The lithology, geologic structure, and climate in Jujuy Province, Argentina combine to place at serious risk the people who live along the Río Grande, the major river that drains the east side of the Cordillera Oriental and the west side of the Sierras Subandinas. Nearly all precipitation falls during summer (January–March) with little during the remainder of the year; most of the basin is semiarid to arid, although the southern end has a humid subtropical climate. Relief is great, as much …
A Guide To Floodplain Cattle Fencing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, Main Roads, Western Australia
A Guide To Floodplain Cattle Fencing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia, Main Roads, Western Australia
Animal production and livestock published reports
A seminar and workshop was held at Fitzroy Crossing in October 1993 to address the consequences of flooding to landholders and communities.
Damage to flood plain fencing was identified as one of the major concerns to landholders.
An outcome from the workshop was the decision to draw on local knowledge and collate information on options for fence and floodgate designs.
This information was to be made available to land holders and other interested parties - hence this publication.

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus
Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The Department of Agriculture established 121 trials in its Narrogin advisory district starting in 1972 to measure the effect of bulldozer and grader built seepage interceptor banks and drains on the topsoil salinity of the land downslope of them.
After 14 years of moniterin, there was no evidence that seepage interceptor drains and banks reduced the top soil salinity on 10 of the 11 sites in the Pingelly, Brookton and Wickepin Shires.
Mogumber Drainage Works Succeed, L K. Lenane
Mogumber Drainage Works Succeed, L K. Lenane
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The loss of arable farmland from soil erosion, waterlogging and salinity is a severe problem on some Western Australian farms.
When the arable land comprises only 40 per cent of the total area within the Mogumber Soil Conservation District, this loss is a real cause for concern. So too is the resulting damage to roads, siltation of railway culverts, and deaths of roadside trees from rising saline watertables.
However, drainage, contour and other works undertaken by the Mogumber Soil Conservation District have halted this degredation. Badly eroded areas that were fenced off now have a satisfactory ground cover. A wheat …

Effects Of Surface Drainage On Dryland Salinity, P R. George, T. R. Negus
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Areas which are salt-affected are often also flooded. Although flooding is not the basic cause of salinity, surface drainage may improve conditions for plant growth, and this article describes suitable methods

Design Standards For Farm Surface Water Supplies, J L. Frith
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Design is usually concerned with getting adequate return from limited recources. Farm dams which dry up represent dam failure. Less seriously, so too do dams which, although not drying out, never fill; they waste a recource.
Water Conservation Handbook, D J. Carder, G. W. Spencer
Water Conservation Handbook, D J. Carder, G. W. Spencer
Natural resources published reports
This handbook is intended as a practical guide in some of the most common aspects of water conservation in the agricultural areas of Western Australia. It deals mainly with water conserved in dams for stock and domestic purposes on the farm.
the farm. The handbook does not attempt to deal with all aspects of handling and using water for agricultural purposes. This is a vast subject which extends into many fields such as engineering, irrigation and land use.
The guide does, however, touch on some important aspects of good management of agricultural land. It should be read in conjunction with …

Clay Cover For Roaded Catchments, J L. Frith, R. A. Nulsen
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
RECENT dry years have stimulated interest in improved catchments for farm dams. Although roaded catchments have been installed on many farm dams in Western Australia, most of them fall short of their potential for increasing run-off.

The 1963-64 Lake Mead Survey, J. M. Lara, J. I. Sanders, Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
The 1963-64 Lake Mead survey was run to compute the reservoir capacity. Results of the geodetic and hydrographic surveys and sediment sampling equipment are described. The geodetic survey showed Hoover Dam subsided an average of 118 mm since 1935. Sonic sounding, photogrammetry, and crosssectional profiling methods were used to run the hydrographic survey. Reservoir area and capacity tables were generated using an electronic computer. The present lake capacity is 29,755,000 acre-ft and the reservoir surface area is 162,700 acres at elevation 1229 ft. 2,720,000 acre-ft of sediments accumulated in the lake since 1935. A unit weight of 60 Ib/cu ft …

West Midlands Development : Erosion Prevention And Control, G W. Spencer
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE prevention of soil erosion is essentially a matter of using each soil according to its potential, and treating it according to its needs.
Good land use and sound management practices are the best preventive measures.
Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne
Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Urban land uses are rapidly converting open land into intensively used land. Generally, in planning those uses, a comprehensive study has included everything except an evaluation of the land in three dimensions. Geologists are eminently well equipped to supply the missing data, but they must also be aware of the needs of the urban community and the kinds of information needed by planners if they are to write reports usable by planners. Urban and environmental geology is a newly expanding field in the use of geologic data to help solve some urban problems in the planning stage. It is likely …
