Although out-of-sequence work (OOS) is often cited as a recurring challenge that impacts project performance, it has not been fully addressed in the existing literature as a standalone topic. This paper addresses this gap, defining OOS work as an activity or series of activities that was not performed according to baseline planned logical productive sequencing. By developing a project-based survey and contacting 300 professionals, extensive data were gathered from 42 projects. Using these data, the impacts of OOS were examined. It was found that, on average, approximately 15% of project activities are performed as OOS, resulting in 33% growth in …

There are several metrics used to evaluate academic publications, including number of citations, h-index, and others. While these metrics are directly related to rewards in the academic community, it is debated whether they correctly reflect the true impact of research. As such, there is a need to clearly interpret and understand such metrics. The goal of this paper is to investigate the citation metrics used to assess academic publications in civil engineering (CE) with a considerable focus on construction engineering and management (CEM). The investigation of these two research fields is important since each one of them has its own …

There is a transition from centralized electricity generation to distributed energy resources (DER). An increasing number of customers are adopting distributed solar generation (DSG). However, utilities face the difficulty of predicting electrical demand and therefore dispatching and controlling generation. The goal of this research is to study the evolving dynamic market behavior affected by DER investment decisions. To that end, agent-based modeling (ABM) is used to study the emerging behavior of the market under those conditions. The model is developed from the existing and validated AMES framework, which is used for agent-based computational economics (ACE) simulation of wholesale power markets. …

"Choosing the most appropriate project delivery method (PDM) available is acknowledged as a crucial issue in the construction industry. Both the choice and application of an unsuitable PDM can result in project failure. Likewise, the selection of a suitable PDM can increase the chance for project success. A method of selecting from among the seven PDMs recognized by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) was created in an attempt to address this issue.
This research was comprised of three objectives. The first objective was to determine the influential factors needed to select the appropriate PDMs available to the US construction industry. …
