"To free Kentucky of slick roads" is the high goal toward which Kentucky has been striving since 1950's. A very capable fellow engineer used to say that there was more satisfaction in being able to take down a Slippery When Wet sign than in erecting one.
Considerable effort has been devoted to the development and adaptation of improved methods of skid resistance testing and to the standardization of testing devices (1, 2, 3, 4). Methods of tests have included the NCSA friction wheel (bicycle wheel), automobile deceleration, skewed-wheel (skewed front-wheels of an automobile), skidding automobile, and the skid-test …
Auto-Utility Trailer Combinations On Rural Highways In Kentucky, Bruce S. Siria, Robert C. Deen
Auto-Utility Trailer Combinations On Rural Highways In Kentucky, Bruce S. Siria, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
An analysis of accident records indicated that auto-utility trailer (A-UT) combinations are involved in a disproportionately high number of traffic mishaps. Locations which have a history of accidents involving A-UT vehicles indicated that differential crosswinds and unanticipated driving maneuvers contribute to the driver's loss of control. A-UT combinations contributed to the fatigue loss in pavement life approximately 50 percent as much as single-unit, two-axle, six-tire trucks (per vehicle). In general, this vehicle type constituted approximately three percent of the total traffic stream. Analysis of speed distributions indicated an equivalency factor for A-UT combinations equal to that for trucks for similar …

Several ASTM and Kentucky CBR tests were performed at different molding moisture contents and compactive energies on the AASHO embankment soil, four representative Kentucky soils, and one soil from Ohio. These data were compared to CBR data previously reported by Shook and Fang. For CBR's ranging from about 4 to 12, a relationship was developed between Kentucky and ASTM CBR's. Within this range, Kentucky and ASTM CBR's are approximately equal. Molding specimens under the static pressure of 2000 pounds per square inch as used in the Kentucky CBR procedure produced specimens with initial dry densities that averaged about 6 percent …

Engineering soils and geologic maps are proving to be invaluable to engineers, industrial leaders, community planners, and administrators during the preliminary stages of planning and site selection. Quantitative engineering data on soils and geological formations, and the interpretation of these data, are important factors to consider in developing the best land-use plans and providing stable foundations for highways, buildings, and other structures, such as dams. Information of this type, when available, is being used by public and private organizations in planning urban development. Engineering soils and geologic maps can be used to great advantage in four major ways by planners …

Kentucky has been disturbed by two major catastrophic events. The major portion of the state was upheaved to what is referred to as the Cincinnati Anticline, and erosion has resulted in forming of several physiographic regions, four of which will be traversed on this trip--namely, the Inner Blue Grass region, the Outer Blue Grass region, the Knobs, and the Eastern Coal Fields. The second major catastrophic event was the Appalachian folding, of which the Pine Mountain Overthrust and its faulting affects the southeastern Kentucky area.
The Inner Blue Grass region contains the lowest exposed geologic formation in Kentucky which is …

Economic Impacts Of The Highway Beautification Act In Kentucky, Vincent W. Mcgurl
Economic Impacts Of The Highway Beautification Act In Kentucky, Vincent W. Mcgurl
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Highway Beautification Act of 1965, Public Law 89-285, has as one of its main purposes "the control of outdoor advertising along interstate and all Federally aided primary highways "in order to protect "the public investment in such highways, to promote the safety and recreational value of public travel and "to preserve natural beauty." The Secretary of Commerce, in cooperation with the state highway departments, was authorized to make a comprehensive study of the economic impact of such legislation on affected individuals and commercial and industrial enterprises.

Research Relating To State Highway Laws, James H. Havens
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Department's study began late in 1962 and was undertaken as a review and analysis of the main body of highway law; but, of course, any subsequential objectives--stated or implied-remained contingent upon and would become a natural consequence of the first-mentioned type of inquiry and the improbablity of discovery. Undoubtedly, the Department was influenced by and was under inducement of the Bureau of Public Roads in this undertaking, The review-and-analysis phase was accomplished, in part, by the School of Law, University of Louisville, acting under contract (CH119 36, dated November 15, 1962) which was subsequently dissolved (9-30-63); a draft report …
Skid Testing With An Automobile, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, Hugh A. Ward
Skid Testing With An Automobile, Rolands L. Rizenbergs, Hugh A. Ward
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
A study was conducted to evaluate the theoretical and practical aspects of using an automobile as a testing device for measurement of pavement slipperiness. Every parameter and significant event in the excursion history of a skidding automobile was measured and recorded. The resultant skid-resistance values, twenty-five in all, were compared and correlated. As a result of the study, the measurement of time in the velocity increment between 30 mph to 20 mph was selected as an interim standard test. A number of experiments were also conducted to aid in the interpretation of test results and to establish control tolerances for …

Performance Of Kentucky (Natural Sandstone) Rock Asphalt, James H. Havens, Ellis G. Williams
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Since about 1948, the performance of natural rock asphalt, used extensively in Kentucky and Indiana, has been plagued by a unique type of scaling in the wheel tracks of each traffic lane. This scaling has been typically an eighth to a quarter of an inch thick and has left the pavements rough and unsightly. In some cases, this phenomen has occurred several times in the same place and has caused much deeper rutting. The general condition is illustrated in a series of photographs attached hereto.

Application Of Geology To Highway Engineering In Kentucky, L. E. Gregg, James H. Havens
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Kentucky, too, is a state where geology abounds. Little credit for this, however, lies with the highway field, because such a prosaic subject is frequently overshadowed by such features as Mammoth Cave, Sky Bridge, Cumberland Falls, Pine Mountain, and extensive underground mineral deposits. Nevertheless; the influence of geology in the highway industry is growing, and it is obvious that some potential contributions have not yet been realized.
