Groundwater Seepage Into The Indian River Lagoon At Port St Lucie, Ashok Pandit, Clovis Clovis El-Khazen Jan 1990

Groundwater Seepage Into The Indian River Lagoon At Port St Lucie, Ashok Pandit, Clovis Clovis El-Khazen

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

A finite element program, GROSEEP, was developed to estimate the groundwater seepage from the surficial aquifer into Indian River lagoon along a selected cross-section in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The model is a general purpose model and can be used at other cross-sections. Model results using a single layer indicate that groundwater seepage could be an important freshwater source into the lagoon. Sensitivity analysis using a three-layer model predicted that among other parameters the presence of windows in the clay layers could significantly affect seepage rates into the lagoon.

This study develops regionally optimal ground-water extraction strategies. Alternative explicit planning objectives arc: (1) Maximize total pumping from the underlying aquifer while causing the evolution of a steady potentiometric: surface: and (2) maintain a prespecified target potentiometric surface. Implicit objectives involve controlling stream/aquifer interflow and water flow across a state boundary, and attempting to avoid poss disruption of current cropping patterns. Models, bounds, constraints, and data arc: formulated. Alternative optimal strategies and the rationale for preferring one strategy arc: presented for a region in Arkansas. The objective of maintaining the relatively unstressed target potentiometric: surl1ce yields politically and socially unacceptable …

Optimal Conjunctive Use Of Ground And Surface Waters, Richard C. Peralta, A. Gharbi, L. S. Willardson, A. W. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Conjunctive water management involves coordinating the use of groundwater and surface water in time and in space. The water sources might or might not be in hydraulic connection with each other. In this chapter, conjunctive water use involves the combined use of surface and groundwater to supply crop water needs.

Two simplified examples of conjunctive use follow. Farmer Allen uses river water to irrigate his crops. In dry years, with below average stream flow, his surface water supply is severely limited by late summer. To augment this surface water supply, he pumps groundwater. In wet years, when the surface water …

The use of pesticides is an integral part of today's agriculture. In many cases, pesticides safeguard crops from severe pest infestation, or increase yield by suppressing competing weed growth. Pesticides often make the difference between profits and losses in farming operations. However, pesticides, even in extremely low concentrations, can pose a risk to human health and to the environment. Applied to plant or soil surfaces, or injected into the soil, pesticides may leach to the ground water or may be washed off with surface water. Pesticide contaminated surface water can reach ground water, or contaminated ground water can reach the …

Coordinating Institutional Approaches To Assure Sustainable Groundwater Of Adequate Quality And Quantity In Utah, Richard C. Peralta, A. W. Peralta, K. Wyatt, Robert W. Hill

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Utah is an arid state, without the abundant surface water resources enjoyed by states in the humid east. Most precipitation in the state falls in the higher elevations of the Uinta and Wasatch mountains of northern and central Utah. Much of this precipitation ultimately ends up in alluvial deposits at the base of these ranges, from which the vast majority of pumping wells draw their water (Barnes and Croft, 1986). This groundwater is an essential resource for use by the people of Utah. About sixty-three percent of Utah's population is at least partially reliant on groundwater for domestic use. In …

Decision Support For Optimal Regional Groundwater Management Strategy Modification, Richard C. Peralta, Paul J. Killian

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

An interactive decision support program is presented for the rapid modification of optimal regional multiobjective groundwater planning strategies. This capability is important for water managers seeking to select the most satisfactory groundwater management strategies for their areas. The program guides decision maker(s) in refining numerically optimal regional strategies into strategies that may be socially or politically more acceptable. Strategy refinements are made by informed modification of constraining conditions on regional objectives or local variables. Application is illustrated by. modifying a bi criterion, sustained groundwater Withdrawal strategy for minimizing the cost of meeting regional water demand on the Arkansas Grand Prairie, …

Maintaining Target Groundwater Levels Using Goal‑Programming: Linear And Quadratic Methods, Amin Yazdanian, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Sustained-yield groundwater management strategies can be designed to closely maintain preassigned 'target' levels. Quadratic and linear goal-programming objective functions are used in two distinct models which minimize the sum of differences between 'target' and regionally optimized sets of groundwater levels. Constraints and bounds imposed on extractions, recharge and heads in each model assure that developed strategies are physically feasible and sustainable. The linear model is computationally more time-efficient, but numerical difficulties due to equality constraints are encountered when it is applied to large groundwater systems_ The quadratic model requires less computer storage and is applied to the Grand Prairie of …

Optimal Modification Of Regional Potentiometric Surface Design For Groundwater Contaminant Containment, Bithin Datta, Richard C. Peralta Jan 1986

Optimal Modification Of Regional Potentiometric Surface Design For Groundwater Contaminant Containment, Bithin Datta, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A procedure for optimal modification of a regional potentiometric surface designed solely on the basis of quantitative considerations, is presented. The modification in the potentiometric surface is necessary to incorporate groundwater quality criteria in a critical subsystem of the entire region. The resulting optimal regional potentiometric surface ensures: sustained groundwater yields from the aquifer, compliance with water quality constraints at critical cells of the sub· system (which are identified by a solute transport simulation model), and the most economic conjunctive management of surface and groundwater.

Conjunctive Use/Sustained Groundwater Yield Design, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Assuring the sustained availability of groundwater from all parts of an aquifer system is analogous to assuring that the potentiometric surface does not change over the long term. Such a steady-state surface is maintained by a specific spatially distributed pattern of groundwater withdrawal. The finite difference form of the linearized Boussinesq equation for steady two-dimensional flow through porous media is used in models that design optimal regional potentiometric surfaces and the conjunctive water use/sustained yield strategies that maintain them. Presented objectives of such models include minimization of unmet water needs. minimization of the regional cost of attempting to satisfy water …

Optimal Regional Potentiometric Surface Design: Least Cost Water Supply/Sustained Groundwater Yield, Richard C. Peralta, Paul J. Killian

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A distributed parameter groundwater management model utilizing quadratic programming to develop an optimal regional steady-state potentiometric surface and its sustained groundwater withdrawal strategy is presented. It minimizes the regional cost of attempting to satisfy the water needs of each finite-difference cell (a) from groundwater and diverted surface water or (b) from groundwater and reduction of water needs achieved by reducing production acreages. Groundwater elevations, withdrawal and recharge are constrained, satisfying legal and hydrologic constraints. The technique is applicable for assuring a regional sustained yield of groundwater in a conjunctive water management setting. It represents the first application of optimization in …

Groundwater Management By Linear Programming, Seungho Song Oct 1984

Groundwater Management By Linear Programming, Seungho Song

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Three hydraulic optimization models are developed. These models combine the finite difference equations of two-dimensional groundwater flow in composite aquifers with various linear programming techniques. The hydraulic submodel employed in these hydraulic optimization models is so versatile that it accounts for time varying pumpage, leaky artesian conditions, a variety of boundary conditions, induced infiltrations from streams or rivers, and conversion from artesian to water table conditions. The objective of submodel 1 is to maximize the total hydraulic head from pumping wells at the end of a study period. The objective of submodel 2 is the same as submodel 1, but …
