Monthly surface water grab samples were collected at four sites on each river from February 2023 to July 2024 and screened for generic and antibiotic-resistant E. coli using membrane filtration with ceftriaxone and cefotaxime as screening agents per the WHO Tricycle Protocol. We evaluated resistance patterns of the …

Geotechnical Centrifuge Test Of A Pile-Supported Wharf In Silt (Test Aep01), Andrew Earl Parrott Mar 2025

Geotechnical Centrifuge Test Of A Pile-Supported Wharf In Silt (Test Aep01), Andrew Earl Parrott

Dissertations and Theses

There have been many documented cases in the U.S. and elsewhere of failure to ports, wharves, and bridges during seismic events due to liquefaction of soils adjacent to foundations. The major design guidelines for surface and maritime transportation structures, such as those offered in ASCE 61-14, Port of Anchorage Seismic Design Manual (POA 2017), AASHTO (2020), Caltrans (2012), and many others, differ considerably on the recommendations for combining the expected inertial and kinematic loads on the pile system. This knowledge gap becomes wider for pile foundations embedded in low plasticity silt, as varying opinions exist on the appropriate characterization of …

Experimental Investigation Of Multi-Cell Column Foun-Dations Under Bending Loads, Mostafa Abdo Abdllah Sharp

Journal of Engineering Research

This study investigates the structural behavior of connections between multi-cell columns and foundations under bending loads. The term "multi-cell" refers to sections with multiple longitudinal hollow cores separated by thin webs. A total of eight specimens were modeled and analyzed using the finite element software ABAQUS/CAE [1], under a single loading line system until failure. To facilitate this study, a control specimen was created as a benchmark, enabling the assessment of various parameters' impact on the connection. These parameters include embedment depth, the number of cells in the column, the presence of shear studs, internal plates, and concrete infill within …

Numerical Study Of Local Scour Around Inclined Bridge Piles Under Wave Conditions, Elsayed Mosaad Shewakh, Ibrahim Mohamed Rashwan, H. Omara

Journal of Engineering Research

Scouring is an issue of interest in the bridge design process, in reality many inclined piers are used. Moreover, scour prosses around inclined piers have non-uniform behaviour depending on its exposure of their foundation into the flow field. The mean purpose of this paper is to study the flow and local scour evolution around the inclined piers to the flow under waves conditions using numerical work. For this purpose, a hydrodynamic and morphological three-dimensional model using RANS equations, and the turbulence k-ε model is used. The inclination direction affects both the strength and location of the scour. Different value of …

The Performance Of Different Systems In Resisting Seismic Loading For High Rise Concrete Structures, Samy A. Fawzy

Journal of Engineering Research

High-rise buildings are subjected to gravity and mostly lateral loading from seismic and wind loads that affect the behavior of such structures. In this study, we will deal with the seismic behavior of different concrete systems. Moment resisting frame, Shear wall, global bracing and dual system are used in this study. A 3D model in static and dynamic analysis was done using ETABS software then a pushover analysis and a parametric study as well for different systems. The study proved that the case of moment resisting frame is the worst in resisting displacements and drift as well. Although the model …

Controlling Verticality Of High-Rise Buildings Using Gnss Techniques Integrated With Laser Plummet, Nasr Mohammady Saba, Yanqing Gao Yanqing, Salem Salama Saleh Mar 2025

Controlling Verticality Of High-Rise Buildings Using Gnss Techniques Integrated With Laser Plummet, Nasr Mohammady Saba, Yanqing Gao Yanqing, Salem Salama Saleh

Journal of Engineering Research

Maintaining vertical alignment is crucial in the construction of high-rise buildings (HRBs). Traditionally, construction teams use laser plummets to transfer reference point coordinates from the foundation to each floor through openings in the concrete slabs. However, as building height increases, the accuracy of the laser beam can be affected, necessitating verification. In an urban development project in Al Alamein, Egypt, the use of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) was proposed to monitor verticality during construction. For the 270-meter-tall T-TOWER, nine monitoring points were established on the foundation to define the building’s axes for each slab. These points were transferred …

Numerical Analysis Of Cold-Formed Built-Up Battened Steel Columns Under Eccentric Compressive Loading, Mai Mohamed Sheta, Hanan Hussein Eltobgy, Mohamed Massoud El Saadawy, Khaled Abdallah Gharib Mar 2025

Numerical Analysis Of Cold-Formed Built-Up Battened Steel Columns Under Eccentric Compressive Loading, Mai Mohamed Sheta, Hanan Hussein Eltobgy, Mohamed Massoud El Saadawy, Khaled Abdallah Gharib

Journal of Engineering Research

This paper presents a 3D finite element model simulation using ABAQUS finite element software to investigate the behavior of steel battened beam columns under uniaxial loads. The columns consist of double-channel cold-formed slender open sections. The study highlighted the effects of various factors on the ultimate capacity of these beam-column members.

By considering both global and local imperfections, the model focuses on the structural strength and performance of battened cold-formed steel columns made from built-up sections. These cold-formed steel (CFS) columns have a slenderness ratio ranging from 50 to 162. Axial loads are applied at the pin-ended support of the …

Non-Linear Analysis Of Axially Loaded Built-Up Open Section Cold-Formed Columns, Mai Mohamed Sheta, Hanan Hussein Eltobgy, Mohamed Massoud El Saadawy, Khaled Abdallah Gharib Mar 2025

Non-Linear Analysis Of Axially Loaded Built-Up Open Section Cold-Formed Columns, Mai Mohamed Sheta, Hanan Hussein Eltobgy, Mohamed Massoud El Saadawy, Khaled Abdallah Gharib

Journal of Engineering Research

Built-up open cold-formed sections are commonly used in entrances, structural corners, and window frames. These elements exhibit low torsional stiffness and are highly susceptible to cross-sectional deformation. Battened built-up cold-formed steel (CFS) open columns offer enhanced load-carrying capacity when individual profiles cannot withstand applied loads.

Extensive research has focused on understanding the buckling behavior of these structural elements. However, limited studies have explored the impact of spacing between cold-formed C-channel sections. Existing research suggests that battened columns with adequately spaced members exhibit superior structural performance compared to those with closely spaced channels.

A critical factor affecting the performance of battened …

Numerical Study For Strengthening Hexagonal Castellated Steel Beams Using Hexagonal Ring Stiffeners, Amany M. Morad, Omnia F. Kharoub, Nashwa Yossef

Journal of Engineering Research

This paper investigates numerically how the castellated steel beams are affected by the addition of hexagonal stiffeners around hexagonal web openings. Increasing the CSBs' load-bearing capacity and improving their overall structural behavior are the main objectives of this strengthening technique. Although there are different failure modes as a result of castellation, the main emphasis of this study is web post-buckling. Using ABAQUS software, a 3D finite element model is created to analyze the beam's behavior. The model's accuracy was validated by comparing its results with those from previous experimental studies. Failure loads, failure modes, and load-deflection curves of CSBs are …
