Assessing Experiences Of Women In Mep Field And Project Management Roles, Lily K. Brown
Assessing Experiences Of Women In Mep Field And Project Management Roles, Lily K. Brown
Construction Management
Despite increased enrollment of women in construction education programs, the industry is not seeing significant gains in the percentages of women, especially in field and project management roles. This study looks specifically at the experiences of women in the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) sector working in field and project management. Women in different career stages were interviewed to gain perspective on the state and climate of the industry from a woman’s perspective. The interviews were analyzed for recurring themes and three primary themes that emerged were: 1) women see themselves as able to bring about better team synthesis than …

Introduction Of An Industial Construction Topics Course In The Cal Poly Cm Curriculum, Connor N. Merz
Construction Management
The industrial construction sector represents a significant portion of the construction industry, yet it remains underrepresented in many academic programs, including the Construction Management (CM) curriculum at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly). This research investigates the feasibility and interest in introducing a dedicated industrial construction elective course to bridge this gap. A student survey was conducted to assess interest levels and determine relevant topics for the course, while an industry interview provided professional insight into necessary competencies. Survey results indicated strong student interest, with 71% expressing a willingness to take the course. The study identified key topics such as …

Comparing The Work-Life Balance And Stress At General Contractors And Cm Agencies, Lucca A. Arcolino
Construction Management
The struggle for a work-life balance has become a significant issue in the construction industry, resulting in personal and organizational challenges. This paper will compare work-life balance and stress between industry professionals working at a CM agency and those at a general contractor. A CM agency is responsible for overseeing the construction project alongside the owner by providing planning, cost estimation, scheduling, and quality assurance. In contrast, the general contractor is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations on-site. A survey was distributed to both types of construction firms to collect data about work hours, work-life balance, stress, and biggest stressors. …

Modelled Flooding Impacts On Lower Fish River Watershed, Sebastian Loschner
Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters
This study investigates the impacts of compound flooding in the Lower Fish River watershed, Baldwin County, Alabama, with a focus on the potential effects of sea level rise due to climate change. Coastal flooding, particularly in smaller watersheds, is a growing concern as it results from the interaction of multiple factors, including rainfall, tidal changes, and extreme weather events. Compound flooding, which involves multiple flood drivers, is expected to worsen with climate change, as increased precipitation and rising sea levels create heightened flood risks. However, existing research on compound flooding predominantly focuses on large-scale watersheds, leaving a knowledge gap in …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Damage caused by snow and ice to airport pavements in colder regions of the United States presents a persistent and economically significant challenge. This research explores an innovative construction method using an electrically conductive composite (ECC) composed of waterborne polyurethane and graphite powder (Gp). The ECC is applied to a Portland cement concrete substrate through a parallel stripe technique, using two types of “exposed” specimen. The study thoroughly examines the resistive heating performance of these specimens under various conditions, focusing on critical factors such as Gp concentrations in ECC, stripe thickness, spacing, and applied voltages. ECC was prepared with varying …

Dataset is an essential factor influencing the accuracy of computer vision (CV) tasks in construction. Although image synthesis methods can automatically generate substantial annotated construction data compared to manual annotation, existing challenges limited the CV task accuracy, such as geometric inconsistency. To efficiently generate high-quality data, a synthesis method of construction data was proposed utilizing Unreal Engine (UE) and PlaceNet. First, the inpainting algorithm was applied to generate pure backgrounds, followed by multi-angle foreground capture within the UE. Then, the Swin Transformer and improved loss functions were integrated into PlaceNet to enhance the feature extraction of construction backgrounds, facilitating object …

Shear Behavior Of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Deep Beams Reinforced With Fibers: A State-Of-The-Art Review, Hossein Mirzaaghabeik, Nuha S. Mashaan, Sanjay Kumar Shukla
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is considered a highly applicable composite material due to its exceptional mechanical properties, such as high compressive strength and ductility. UHPC deep beams are structural elements suitable for short spans, transfer girders, pile caps, offshore platforms, and bridge applications where they are designed to carry heavy loads. Several key factors significantly influence the shear behavior of UHPC deep beams, including the compressive strength of UHPC, the vertical web reinforcement (ρsv), horizontal web reinforcement (ρsh), and longitudinal reinforcement (ρs), as well as the shear span-to-depth ratio (λ), fiber type, fiber content (FC), and geometrical dimensions. In this paper, …

Numerical Analyses Of Construction Materials At Different Scales For Improved Resilience And Sustainability Of Civil Infrastructures, Chenchen Huang
Theses and Dissertations
The resilience and sustainability of civil infrastructure are fundamental to supporting modern society in the face of growing environmental challenges and resource limitations. This study aims to use multi-scale numerical tools to evaluate mechanical performance of different construction materials under various environmental and loading conditions. Firstly, we adopt the discrete element method (DEM) to evaluate the influence of freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) action on the mechanical properties of rock from the micro perspective. A simplified plastic model is proposed to capture the residual deformation produced during FTCs. To further explore the deterioration of FTCs on rock, the water-contained grain-based model (GBM) …

Mechanism Of Mud Pumping On Plateau Highway Under Traffic Loads And Its Treatment Strategy, Zhang Junhui, Chen Zhide, Gao Feng, Na Qicai, Ma Pengfei, Xiao Lin
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
The dynamic hydraulic response and particle migration of subgrade structures under traffic loads are fundamental to reveal the formation and development mechanisms of mud pumping. The driving mechanism of fine particle migration in the mud pumping state was explored by conducting laboratory tests on layered gravel-sandy silt columns under dynamic loads. The results show that the slurry sloshing causes alternating positive and negative pressure gradients within the gravel layer. This oscillating pressure gradient enhances the pore permeability in the underlying sandy silt layer, providing the necessary hydrodynamic conditions for fine particle migration.Fine particle migration increases the slurry turbidity to a stable value.Upon the removal …
