Fight For Flight: The Narratives Of Human Versus Machine Following Two Aviation Tragedies, Andrew Prahl, Rio Kin Ho Leung, Alicia Ning Shan Chua

Human-Machine Communication

This study provides insight into the relationship between human and machine in the professional aviation community following the 737 MAX accidents. Content analysis was conducted on a discussion forum for professional pilots to identify the major topics emerging in discussion of the accidents. A subsequent narrative analysis reveals dominant arguments of human versus machine as zero-sum, surrender to machines, and an epidemic of mistrust. Results are discussed in the context of current issues in human-machine communication, and we discuss what other quickly automating industries can learn from aviation’s experience.

Development & Validation Of A Piv System For Obtaining Data From A Uasb Reactor, Camila D' Bastiani, Gerald Gallagher, David Kennedy, Anthony Reynolds

Conference Papers

Anaerobic digestion processes can generate energy in the form of biogas while treating organic wastewater. The efficiency of the treatment, and thus the generation of biogas, is closely linked to the type and design of the reactor, and the technology used. Granular anaerobic digestion technology offers advantages such as a higher loading rate and reduction of the space needed. However, the hydrodynamics inside this type of reactor can be complex due to the presence of solids (granules) and gas (biogas) phases along with the liquid phase (wastewater). This is one of the reasons why the study and optimization of reactors …

Investigation Of Groundwater Depletion And Leveel Underseepage With Unstructured-Grid Modeling Approach, Ye-Hong Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Unstructured grid is a tessellation of geometric shapes in irregular patterns that provides flexibility in grid design for groundwater modeling. However, groundwater modeling is mostly developed with uniform grid tessellation and layer, which could simplify model structure or cause expensive computational costs in high-resolution simulations. Unstructured grid incorporates non-uniform horizontal and non-uniform vertical discretizations providing the capability to replicate complex hydrostratigraphy, capture geologic features that are crucial for groundwater flow simulation, and reduce computational costs while maintaining a high resolution for areas of interest. This study contains three parts to investigate unstructured-grid approach on constructing high-fidelity groundwater models, comparisons with …

Reducing Early-Age Shrinkage Cracks Of Bridge Decks And Rails, Soumitra Das, George Morcous, Jiong Hu Apr 2022

Reducing Early-Age Shrinkage Cracks Of Bridge Decks And Rails, Soumitra Das, George Morcous, Jiong Hu

UNL Student Research Days Posters, Graduate

Early-age shrinkage cracking of concrete bridge decks and rails accelerates the penetration of water and chemicals which leads to reinforcement corrosion, delamination, and eventually spalling. All this results in shorter service life, road closure, and costly repair. Development of Low-cement concrete(LCC) mix to reduce early age shrinkage crack through aggregate grading optimization was done in this research work. This approach also reduces concrete cost ($15-$20/cyd) (15–25%) and its carbon footprint (≈15%).

Quantitative Evaluation Of Steel Corrosion Induced Deterioration In Rubber Concrete By Integrating Ultrasonic Testing, Machine Learning And Mesoscale Simulation, Jinrui Zhang, Mengxi Zhang, Biqin Dong, Hongyan Ma

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Chloride-induced steel corrosion seriously affects the durability of reinforced concrete structures. Rubber concrete, an environmentally friendly construction material in which waste rubber is recycled as a concrete component, has demonstrated superior resistance to chloride-induced steel corrosion and the subsequent concrete deterioration. However, quantitative evaluation of the degree of deterioration in rubber concrete based on nondestructive detection is challenging due to the complexity of the material. In this paper, reinforced concrete specimens with rubber contents of 0, 10% and 20% are subjected to the electrochemically accelerated corrosion experiments and monitored by ultrasonic testing. Six machine learning models are trained by the …

Faculty and Student Publications

Accurately assessing groundwater storage changes in Niger is critical for long-term water resource management but is difficult due to sparse field data. We present a study of groundwater storage changes and recharge in Southern Niger, computed using data from NASA Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission. We compute a groundwater storage anomaly estimate by subtracting the surface water anomaly provided by the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) model from the GRACE total water storage anomaly. We use a statistical model to fill gaps in the GRACE data. We analyze the time period from 2002 to 2021, which corresponds …

Foam-Based Floatovoltaics: A Potential Solution To Disappearing Terminal Natural Lakes, Koami Soulemane Hayibo, Joshua M. Pearce

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Terminal lakes are disappearing worldwide because of direct and indirect human activities. Floating photovoltaics (FPV) are a synergistic system with increased energy output because of water cooling, while the FPV reduces water evaporation. This study explores how low-cost foam-based floatovoltaic systems can mitigate the disappearance of natural lakes. A case study is performed on 10%–50% FPV coverage of terminal and disappearing Walker Lake. Water conservation is investigated with a modified Penman-Monteith evapotranspiration method and energy generation is calculated with an operating temperature model experimentally determined from foam-based FPV. Results show FPV saves 52,000,000 m3/year of water and US$6,000,000 at 50% …

Arthur Cotton And The Development Of Public Works, Justin Patty Apr 2022

Arthur Cotton And The Development Of Public Works, Justin Patty

The Larrie and Bobbi Weil Undergraduate Research Award

In the long history of violence and cruelty that defined the period of British rule in India, Arthur Cotton is one of the few men remembered today not for his crimes, but for the good he did for the people of India. Cotton’s irrigation projects protected millions of Indians from the threat of famine, but the true legacy of his work is global in scope. As a major figure in the development of India’s infrastructure for most of the nineteenth century, Cotton witnessed the British Empire struggle with questions about its role in facilitating public works projects. Despite the Empire’s …

Increasing Hydrogen Production In Electrolysis With A Magnetic Field, Laurie Battle Apr 2022

Increasing Hydrogen Production In Electrolysis With A Magnetic Field, Laurie Battle

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Hydrogen is an important energy carrier that has no carbon emissions when energy is extracted and also can be used as energy storage to increase the practicality of many renewable energy sources. The prominent methods of hydrogen production make use of fossil fuels, resulting in carbon emissions. Electrolysis is a lesser used technology for hydrogen production in which electricity splits water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen gases. If the electricity is sourced from renewable energies, this process releases little to no carbon and the resulting hydrogen is termed “green hydrogen.” While electrolysis and fossil fuel methods have comparable efficiencies of …

A Coupled Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics-Discrete Element Method Framework For The Dynamic Response Of Saturated Geotechnical Systems, Saman Farzi Sizkow Apr 2022

A Coupled Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics-Discrete Element Method Framework For The Dynamic Response Of Saturated Geotechnical Systems, Saman Farzi Sizkow

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Investigating the past failures of various geotechnical systems during major seismic events, reveals the importance of developing a robust framework that can reliably analyze complex geotechnical systems. Up to now, fully continuum techniques have been the most popular choice for this type of problems. These methods use sophisticated constitutive models which need careful fine-tuning to successfully mimic the macro-scale dynamic behavior of coupled systems. The discrete element method (DEM) is, by nature, the best option for discontinuous systems such as soil. Furthermore, it has effective means to handle soil-structure interaction. Therefore, many attempts have been made to couple DEM with …

Center for Life in Extreme Environments Publications

Mosses inhabit nearly all terrestrial ecosystems and engage in important interactions with nitrogen-fixing microbes, sperm-dispersing arthropods, and other plants. It is hypothesized that these interactions could be mediated by biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Moss BVOCs may play fundamental roles in influencing local ecologies, such as biosphere–atmosphere–hydrosphere communications, physiological and evolutionary dynamics, plant–microbe interactions, and gametophyte stress physiology. Further progress in quantifying the composition, magnitude, and variability of moss BVOC emissions, and their response to environmental drivers and metabolic requirements, is limited by methodological and analytical challenges. We review several sampling techniques with various analytical approaches and describe best practices …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study aims at the development of magnesium phosphate cement-based ultra-high performance concrete (MPC-UHPC). To this end, MPC paste phase was designed by using high magnesia-to-phosphate (M/P, 3.5) and low water-to-cement (W/C, 0.10–0.16) mass ratios, and certain amounts of ultra-fine fly ash (UFA, 5%–15%). Fresh and hardened properties, and microstructure of the developed MPC-UHPC were evaluated, and compared with those of conventional UHPC as well. Test results showed that lower W/C resulted in higher mechanical strengths and lower drying shrinkage, but the sharp decrease of workability and increase of autogenous shrinkage. At a constant W/C, the addition of UFA effectively …

Effect Of Carbon Nanotube And Graphite Nanoplatelet On Composition, Structure, And Nano-Mechanical Properties Of C-S-H In Uhpc, Huanghuang Huang, Le Teng, Xiaojian Gao, Kamal Khayat, Fazhou Wang, Zhichao Liu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper studied the influence of carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphite nanoplatelet (GNP) used at 0 to 0.3%, by mass of binder, on composition, structure, and nano-mechanical characteristics of C-S-H of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Hydration kinetics, pore structure, and mechanical properties of UHPC were also investigated. The non-proprietary UHPC was proportioned with 17% lightweight sand for internal curing. Test results indicated that the addition of 0.3% CNT or GNP led to approximately 20 MPa increase in compressive strengths of non-fibrous UHPC mortar and fibrous UHPC (2% steel fibers), compared to those prepared without any nanomaterial. Such enhancement is attributed …

Policy Strategies To Solve The U.S. Recycling Crisis, Flavia M. Scotto D'Antuono Apr 2022

Policy Strategies To Solve The U.S. Recycling Crisis, Flavia M. Scotto D'Antuono

Student Publications

Following China’s Operation National Sword in 2018, the politics and economics of recycling have increasingly come under scrutiny as many examine whether it remains a worthwhile endeavor. Differences across municipalities, changing prices of goods, contamination, mislabeling, and involvement by the plastics industry has further confused the issue. This paper examines to what extent a national recycling policy would be effective and what form it may take using several case studies - whether it be mandatory recycled content minimums, extended producer responsibility, or allowing the industry to phase out completely,

Evaluation Of Manual Infrared Brake Screening Technologies, Joseph Crabtree, Brian Beaven, Jennifer Walton Apr 2022

Evaluation Of Manual Infrared Brake Screening Technologies, Joseph Crabtree, Brian Beaven, Jennifer Walton

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this project was to install and operate two manual infrared (IR) brake screening systems at Kentucky inspection facilities to enhance the quality of Level 1 safety inspections. A radio button in the inspection software allowed enforcement personnel to indicate when the IR equipment was used to select a truck for inspection. This feature allowed a direct comparison of performance measures (e.g., number of violations identified per inspection, out-of-service rate, etc.) for IR-generated inspections versus all inspections.

The evaluation focused on inspections at the Lyon County site for a 60-day period during September and October 2021. Analysis of …

Evaluating The Effects Of Shored Construction On Steel Girder Composite Bridges, Parker Brooks Apr 2022

Evaluating The Effects Of Shored Construction On Steel Girder Composite Bridges, Parker Brooks

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Steel composite girder bridges provide economic advantages and higher load-carrying capacity than non-composite alternatives. Over the years, a conventional sequence of un-shored construction for steel girder composite bridges has been developed. There is an alternative construction sequence, known as shored construction, that uses temporary supports (discretely or fully supported) for the superstructure during the installation of metal forms and the pouring of concrete. Shored construction also can be used in an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) practice where construction occurs at a nearby site and fully-formed elements are transported to the final site using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). In order to …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system is one of the contributors which has enormous potential to reach the goal of net-zero energy buildings (NZEB) that significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels that contribute to global warming. However, the limitations of the visual and aesthetic appearance of current BIPV systems make this aspiration unlikely. This study investigates the limitations of the single-color-based PV modules that are dull in appearance and have low photo-conversion efficiency (PCE). In order to solve this issue, we designed, developed, and characterized micro-patterned-based multicolored photovoltaic (MPCPV) modules which are applicable to net-zero building and development. Impacts Of Pandemic-Induced Material Price Escalation On Construction Estimation And Bidding, Chancellor G. Giessinger

Construction Management

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced new severe supply chain bottlenecks in the construction industry. These bottlenecks reduced the availability of a wide variety of critical construction materials, which created a scarcity that has raised material prices at an unprecedented rate and extended lead times for some materials by months. This poses new challenges for contractors with pressure from owners to deliver ongoing contracts with fixed, pre-pandemic contract pricing and for estimators seeking to bid new projects with unforeseeable future material pricing. The objective of this research to focus on contractors operating within the state of California and their primary challenges in …
