Study On Road Performance Of High Content Phosphogypsum Cement Stabilized Red Clay, Yang Dezhong, Chen Kaisheng, Li Qiang
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
In response to the waste of phosphogypsum resources and engineering characteristics of red clay, by referring to the mix ratio design method of fly ash mixtures, 18 sets of mix ratio samples were set up indoors. By conducting compaction tests, seven-day unconfined compression strength tests, water-stability tests, and CBR tests, exploratory research was conducted on the road performance of high content phosphogypsum stabilized red clay. The results indicate that the optimal water content of high content phosphogypsum stabilized red clay is lower than that of plain red clay. The seven-day unconfined compression strength is 1.8-3.7 times that of plain red …
Using 2d Hec-Ras Modeling With Vertical Feature Extraction To Inform Ecological Design In The Lower Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Colin Anderson
Using 2d Hec-Ras Modeling With Vertical Feature Extraction To Inform Ecological Design In The Lower Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Colin Anderson
LSU Master's Theses
A 2D HEC-RAS model was created to demonstrate applications of hydraulic modeling for informing ecological design. This was done by comparing the hydrologic conditions of a baseline year (2010) to that of the environmental flow prescription from Kozak et al. (2016). The inundation results are relevant to hydraulic connectivity and cypress regeneration.
The hydraulic model was created by assimilating numerous data sources, refining the model with vertical feature (VF) extraction, and calibrating/validating the model. Several topo-bathymetric sources were combined to create the digital elevation model (DEM). Most importantly, this included bathymetry of the backswamp. Polylines of significant VFs in the …

Introduction—Myosin II has been investigated with optical trapping, but single motor-filament assay arrangements are not reflective of the complex cellular environment. To understand how myosin interactions propagate up in scale to accomplish system force generation, we devised a novel actomyosin ensemble optical trapping assay that reflects the hierarchy and compliancy of a physiological environment and is modular for interrogating force effectors.
Methods—Hierarchical actomyosin bundles were formed in vitro. Fluorescent template and cargo actin filaments (AF) were assembled in a flow cell and bundled by myosin. Beads were added in the presence of ATP to bind the cargo AF …

Study Of Water Desalination: A Persian Gulf City, Grégoire Saury
Student Theses and Dissertations
Water desalination represents an important challenge of tomorrow’s world. Water needs never stop to increase and certain areas of the world relies on ways to have access to this resource. Desalination is a process that offers an alternative access to this vital resource by using seawater as process input. These installations are implementing several purifications units designed to transform seawater into drinkable water. So, they eliminate salt but also any kind of pollution present in the water. Here, the goal will be to design a process able to provide drinkable water for a 200,000 habitants town located in the Persian …

Intensifying permafrost thaw alters carbon cycling by mobilizing large amounts of terrestrial substrate into aquatic ecosystems. Yet, few studies have measured aquatic carbon fluxes and constrained drivers of ecosystem carbon balance across heterogeneous Arctic landscapes. Here, we characterized hydrochemical and landscape controls on fluvial carbon cycling, quantified fluvial carbon fluxes, and estimated fluvial contributions to ecosystem carbon balance across 33 watersheds in four ecoregions in the continuous permafrost zone of the western Canadian Arctic: unglaciated uplands, ice-rich moraine, and organic-rich lowlands and till plains. Major ions, stable isotopes, and carbon speciation and fluxes revealed patterns in carbon cycling across ecoregions …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Anti-washout concrete (AWC) is a special cement-based material that can be directly employed in underwater environments without dispersion. It was developed around 50 years ago, and more than 150 journal articles and technical reports have been published. This paper provides a holistic review about the basic fresh-state and hardened-state properties of the AWC, such as water (washout) resistance, consistency, bleeding and segregation resistance, mechanical properties, and durability, as well as relevant testing methods. The discrepancies between AWC's characteristics and those of conventional concrete are clearly presented. The mixture compositions, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), and other conditions that affect AWC's performance …

Evaluating The Indoor Thermal Resilience Of Ventilative Cooling In Non-Residential Low Energy Buildings: A Review, Elahe Tavakoli, Adam O'Donovan, Maria Kolokotroni, Paul D. O’Sullivan
Publications
The quality of future working circumstances for many will be contingent on how low energy indoor spaces respond to challenges from accelerated ambient warming. Resilient cooling is increasingly relevant given the need to evaluate whether a building designed today is resilient against extreme disturbances to the thermal environment from events in the future. The most vulnerable spaces are likely to be those that adopt ventilative cooling. This study reviewed recent research relating to these buildings, discussing different definitions, metrics and approaches available to quantify indoor thermal resilience, also evaluating the extent to which existing published studies have captured each of …

Photochemical Formation Mechanisms And Applications Of Mn Oxide Nanomaterials, Zhenwei Gao
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Manganese (Mn) oxides are ubiquitous in aquatic and terrestrial environments, and the rich redox chemistry of manganese is of interest in engineered systems, such as batteries and water oxidation catalysts. Mn oxides have large surface areas and are highly active in adsorption and redox reactions. Our research group recently reported photochemically-assisted abiotic inorganic oxidation of Mn2+(aq) to δ-MnO2 nanosheets in the presence of nitrate and without a microorganism, demonstrating that abiotic Mn oxidation processes are not negligible. My doctoral work focuses on investigating the effects of various aquatic chemistry parameters, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), peroxyl radical (ROO•), reactive halogen …

Advanced Nanomaterials And Module Designs For Efficient Photothermal Water Treatment, Deoukchen Ghim
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Water scarcity is one of the most serious challenges that human beings face, and the demand for clean water will continuously increase as populations grow. Creating potable water from saline water is an important way to meet global freshwater demands. However, current desalination techniques require high energy consumption and a large scale to be efficient, restricting their utilization in remote and underdeveloped areas. These constraints motivate the development of sustainable water treatment methods that can be used with less energy input, in small modular configurations, and in off-grid water treatment systems. As an abundant and renewable energy source, sunlight has …

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Rapid expansion of technology development at the nanoscale has underpinned a promising industry. Towards this, there remain significant information gaps which are critical with regard to decision making processes and ultimate industrial sustainability. From an implication point of view, understanding how common biological macromolecules, including glycolipids and/or biopolymers produced by bacteria and fungi, which are ubiquitous in the environment, is fundamental to predicting the behavior of released/produced nanoparticles. Conversely, other bio-based tailored macromolecules, including mussel foot protein (MFP), have significant potential as functional material coatings for advanced applications. This PhD thesis is focused on interfacial processes related to superparamagnetic iron oxide …
Role Of Water Chemistry In Lead Release During Drinking Water Supply And Augmentation, Anushka Mishrra
Role Of Water Chemistry In Lead Release During Drinking Water Supply And Augmentation, Anushka Mishrra
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Lead is a toxic heavy metal and legacy contaminant in drinking water that can be released from lead service lines and lead-containing premise plumbing. Lead concentrations in water are sensitive to changes in water chemistry. The extent of lead release is often driven by the solubility of the corrosion products formed on the interior of the pipes. Therefore, it is critical to advance our understanding of the extent of lead released from different lead-based plumbing materials at equilibrium and the ability to control lead when it exceeds the regulatory levels. Lead measured in the 1st liter of water collected from …
Fate Of Metals In Presence Of Minerals And Mineral-Organic Assemblages, Neha Sharma
Fate Of Metals In Presence Of Minerals And Mineral-Organic Assemblages, Neha Sharma
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Metals can enter aquatic systems from natural and anthropogenic processes associated with weathering, sediment re-suspension, industrial activities, and atmospheric deposition. Metals pose health and environmental risks at high concentrations due to their potential toxicity and bioaccumulation, but many trace metals also serve as essential micronutrients for biogeochemical processes in natural aquatic systems. Biogeochemical processes such as methanogenesis, denitrification, and mercury methylation require transition metals such as nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), and molybdenum (Mo) for completion. These biogeochemical processes can be substantial contributors of greenhouse gases, such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), into the atmosphere. The behavior, …
Calcium Bearing Mineral-Hydrogel Composites For Phosphate Removal And Recovery, Albern Xuan-Wei Tan
Calcium Bearing Mineral-Hydrogel Composites For Phosphate Removal And Recovery, Albern Xuan-Wei Tan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The millions of tons of phosphate rock ore mined every year for use as phosphorus fertilizer have created two challenges. First, phosphate rock is a mined, non-renewable resource that is also heavily geographically concentrated, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability and availability of phosphorus. Second, after it is applied as a fertilizer, phosphorus will also be released to the broader environment. There, it contributes to harmful algal blooms and eutrophication, which threaten surface water quality and can harm aquatic ecosystems and the communities and industries that rely on them. These considerations motivate the coupled development of techniques for removing and …
The Generation And Transport Of Charged Aerosols: Fundamental Study And Applications In Medicine And Energy Conversion, Hao Zhou
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Charged aerosols have significant implications in the field of functional material synthesis, pharmaceutical coating, and drug delivery. Electrospray systems are an effective methodology for generating highly charged monodispersed droplets in the size range from nanometer to micrometer. The prediction of surface charge, size and morphology of nanoparticles resulting from charged droplets are highly required for the precise control of nanoparticle properties and their effective utilization. However, the evolution of charged droplet is not well understood due to the existence of coulombic fission and ion evaporation processes. Thus, the goal of this dissertation is to elucidate how the precursor properties and …
Nanoscale Interfacial Control Of Ion Behaviors And Caco3 Formation In Environmental Systems, Yaguang Zhu
Nanoscale Interfacial Control Of Ion Behaviors And Caco3 Formation In Environmental Systems, Yaguang Zhu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Interfaces in environmental systems can change the distribution of pollutants and nutrients, determine the fate and transport of nanoparticles, and affect the efficiency of engineering projects. Complex interactions, including electrostatic interactions, Van der Waals interactions, chemical interactions, and ion-surface specific interactions, can all contribute to different ion, ion-pair, and nanoparticle formations near interfaces. Although environmental interfaces play critical roles, only a limited number of studies have considered the nanoscale picture of how they control ions and nanoparticles. Thus, this dissertation addresses three research questions: (1) How does sulfate chemically interact with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) during its heterogeneous formation on quartz …

Incorporating Geopolymer Binders To Fully Utilize Recycled Concrete Aggregates, Matthew Upshaw
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study aims to develop a geopolymer concrete binder that will yield desirable strength and durability characteristics when applied to recycled aggregate concrete. In order to achieve this, a geopolymer binder consisting of a metakaolin-silica fume aluminosilicate source material blend activated by potassium-based alkaline solutions is developed and used in place of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with four different levels of recycled aggregate replacement ratios. The properties of these concretes were analyzed and compared with the properties of OPC concretes produced with the same replacement ratio levels. The results showed that the geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GRAC) achieved greater than …

The thermoelectric building envelope (TBE) integrates thermoelectric materials with the building envelope for active space heating and cooling. The advantage of TBE heating and cooling includes its significantly low-profile design and no refrigerant use. Although there are existing studies evaluating TBE performance, they were based on limited operating conditions. The study aims to experimentally evaluate the heating and cooling performance of a TBE prototype under various operating conditions. The TBE prototype was installed between two psychrometric chambers, which simulated indoor and outdoor conditions. The prototype was tested at an indoor temperature of around 22.35–23.58 degrees C and outdoor temperatures from …

Mechanical Responses Of Soil-Geosynthetic Composite (Sgc) Mass Under Failure Load, Meen-Wah Gui, Truc Phan, Thang Pham
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
There is an increasing awareness on the major benefits of using soil-geosynthetic composite (SGC) to achieve and maintain the stability of earth-filled embankment. Unlike the mechanically stabilized earth wall, the mechanism of the composite mass is still not fully understood. For examples, current analyses have been limited to an SGC mass with a reinforcement spacing Sv of 0.2 m only; the combined effect of reinforcement and backfill properties is rarely studied; the equation for the estimation of the load-carrying capacity of the SGC mass has only been validated for backfill with maximum particle size dmax between 10 mm and 33 …

Several key challenges are hindering large-scale cultivation of microalgae for industrial purposes, including wastewater treatment, carbon capture, biomass production, and renewable energy production. These challenges are closely related to efficacy of 1) resource utilization, 2) biomass production, and 3) harvesting. This review describes how attached or biofilm cultivation of microalgae and/or cyanobacteria with heterotrophic bacteria in consortia could simultaneously resolve these technical obstacles, thereby reducing monetary and energetic costs of producing microalgal bioenergy. Symbiotic relationships between these organisms reduces the need for aeration or exogenous supplementation of nutrients. Additionally, this review details how increasing biodiversity correlates with diversity of functionality …

Llam-Mdcnet For Detecting Remote Sensing Images Of Dead Tree Clusters, Zongchen Li, Ruoli Yang, Weiwei Cai, Yongfei Xue, Yaowen Hu, Liujun Li
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Clusters of dead trees are forest fires-prone. To maintain ecological balance and realize its protection, timely detection of dead trees in forest remote sensing images using existing computer vision methods is of great significance. Remote sensing images captured by Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) typically have several issues, e.g., mixed distribution of adjacent but different tree classes, interference of redundant information, and high differences in scales of dead tree clusters, making the detection of dead tree clusters much more challenging. Therefore, based on the Multipath dense composite network (MDCN), an object detection method called LLAM-MDCNet is proposed in this paper. First, …

The engineering profession has experienced some ethical cases that were rarely reported, scrutinized, or discussed because: they did not necessarily represent violations of existing codes even if they breached ethical principles; those within the organization were not prepared to take steps to address the issues or impose sanction; an/or some of the personnel associated with these cases resorted to silence to avoid being labeled as trouble-makers in their organizations and, perhaps, more broadly, in society. The goal of this paper is to heighten managerial awareness of ethical issues, interrelated ethical lapses, and appropriate responsive actions within professional engineering communities. As …
