Supervised Machine Learning Techniques Applied To Low-Cost Air Quality Sensor Suites, Peter Wahman Jan 2022

Supervised Machine Learning Techniques Applied To Low-Cost Air Quality Sensor Suites, Peter Wahman

All Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Low-cost PM sensors have garnered interest for their ability to reduce the cost of investigating PM concentrations in both indoor and outdoor spaces. They perform well in high concentration lab testing with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9. In real-world applications, the correlation coefficients drop significantly because of sensing floors and adverse ambient conditions. There are plenty of supervised machine learning techniques that aim to correct the measurements ranging from linear regression to more advanced neural networks and random forests. This work aims to use those more complicated techniques to adjust the measurements using other data sets gathered by a sensor …

A Systematic Literature Review Exploring The Barriers To Innovative Modular Construction Methods For The International Hyper-Scale Data Centre Sector, Peter E. Lonergan, A.Omar Portillo-Dominguez

Other

Data centres form the essential global infrastructure relied upon for multiple industries such as the internet, financial services, and telecommunications. Consequently, data centre construction has developed into a buoyant business sector, leveraging increasing global investment. However, traditional means of data centre procurement do not match stakeholder’s ambitions or current delivery demands. Thus, there is a need for the adoption of new and innovative construction methodologies in the sector to introduce improvements for the delivery of this essential infrastructure. As a step in that direction, this paper presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that investigates the barriers preventing the implementation of …

Impact Of Deicers On Low-Temperature Performance Of Missouri Pavements, Jun Liu, Yizhuang David Wang, Farshad Kerahroudi Saberi, Jenny Liu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of deicer chemicals for highway winter maintenance operations is an essential strategy for ensuring a reasonably high level of service. It's critical to quantify their effectiveness and potentially detrimental effects on transportation infrastructure (i.e., asphalt and concrete pavements). In this study, nine deicer chemicals used in the state of Missouri were collected. The ice-melting test was conducted to quantify the performance characteristics of deicer chemicals. Freeze-thaw (F-T) test of concrete in the presence of deicer was conducted to quantify the negative effects of deicers to concrete. Low-temperature behavior of asphalt mixture affected by deicers was quantified by asphalt …

A Framework For Estimating Future Traffic Operation And Safety Performance Of Restricted Crossing U-Turn (Rcut) Intersections, Amirarsalan M. Molan, Jonathan Howard, Mouyid Islam, Anurag Pande

Faculty and Student Publications

Background: Despite numerous studies demonstrating the effectiveness of Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersection design, its implementation remains uneven and close to zero in some large states, including California. This paper provides a comprehensive framework to estimate the operational and safety performance of future RCUT designs. The framework is demonstrated for a geometrically constrained intersection located on a highspeed rural expressway. The operational evaluation relies on microscopic simulation models of existing TWSC and alternate RCUT designs used to estimate network-wide performance measures. Methods: Two approaches are demonstrated for future safety estimation; first, an HSM-prescribed Empirical Bayes (EB) approach that uses Safety …

Application Of Artificial Neural Network To Predict The Properties Of Permeable Concrete, Hatem H. Almasaeid, Donia G. Salman Jan 2022

Application Of Artificial Neural Network To Predict The Properties Of Permeable Concrete, Hatem H. Almasaeid, Donia G. Salman

Faculty and Student Publications

The structure of permeable concrete has been the primary reason for its use in construction. Permeable concrete is composed of water, cement, aggregate, and little-to no-fines resulting in the presence of a significant number of voids. This makes permeable concrete an ideal solution to water accumulation issues as it acts as a drainage system. This study employs a feedforward backpropagation artificial neural network model that combines experimental laboratory data from previous studies with appropriate network architectures and training techniques. The purpose of the analysis is to develop a reliable functional relationship, based on water-cement ratio, aggregate-cement ratio, and density parameters, …

Quantitative Bridge Inspection Ratings Using Autonomous Robotic Systems, Anil K. Agrawal

Project IM-2

Impact sounding has been recognized as an effective technique to detect delamination in concrete structures, such as concrete decks. An enormous amount of sounding data can be generated/collected by the autonomous inspection systems equipped with impactors and microphones. However, the main challenge in the practical application of this technology is the development of advanced data analysis approaches for identifying defects from impact sounding data. In this study, the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) analysis and power-spectral density (PSD) analysis are combined to extract useful features of sounding data generated by the impact hammer. It has been found that the EMD method …

Fan-Shaped Model For Generating The Anisotropic Catchment Area Of Subway Stations Based On Feeder Taxi Trips, Shiwei Liu, Yajuan Deng, Xianbiao Hu, Jiaxing Zhou, Jianming Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The catchment areas of subway stations have always been considered as a circular shape in previous research. Although some studies show the catchment area may be affected by road conditions, public transportation, land use, and other factors, few studies have discussed the shape of the catchment area. This study focuses on analyzing the anisotropy of catchment areas and developing a sound methodology to generate them. Based on taxi global positioning system (GPS) data, this paper first proposes a data mining method to identify feeder taxi trips around subway stations. Then, a fan-shaped model is proposed and applied to Xi'an Metro …

Analytical And Experimental Investigation Into Pre-Stressed Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Cfrp) Fatigue Retrofits For Steel Waterway Lock-Gate Structures, Christina Lozano, Maggie Langston, Mohammad H. Kashefizadeh, Gary S. Prinz Jan 2022

Analytical And Experimental Investigation Into Pre-Stressed Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (Cfrp) Fatigue Retrofits For Steel Waterway Lock-Gate Structures, Christina Lozano, Maggie Langston, Mohammad H. Kashefizadeh, Gary S. Prinz

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lock gates are an important part of the transportation infrastructure within the United States (US). Unfortunately, many existing lock gates have reached or exceeded their initial design lives and require frequent repairs to remain in service. Unscheduled repairs often increase as gates age, having a local economic impact on freight transport, which can create economic ripples throughout the nation. Metal fatigue is a key cause of unscheduled service interruptions, degrading lock gate components over time. Additionally, because lock gates are submerged during operation, crack detection prior to component failure can be difficult, and repair costs can be high. This paper …

Multiphysics Numerical Modeling Of Transient Transport Of Pfas, Pierrette Iradukunda, Arvin Farid Jan 2022

Multiphysics Numerical Modeling Of Transient Transport Of Pfas, Pierrette Iradukunda, Arvin Farid

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The need to understand the fate and transport of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has grown due to the widespread contamination of the environment by them. PFAS are persistent, mobile, toxic manmade chemicals of great concern that contribute to the contamination of soil and groundwater. The presence of PFAS in unsaturated soil complicates their transport due to the impact of the air–water interface and solid-phase adsorption. The air–water interface can significantly increase the retention of PFAS during its transport. In this paper, a numerical model has been developed to study the transport of PFAS by coupling transient seepage and advection-dispersion, …

Seismic Risk Assessment Of A Steel Building Supported On Helical Pile Groups, Maryam Shahbazi, Amy B. Cerato, Emad M. Hassan, Hussam Mahmoud Jan 2022

Seismic Risk Assessment Of A Steel Building Supported On Helical Pile Groups, Maryam Shahbazi, Amy B. Cerato, Emad M. Hassan, Hussam Mahmoud

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Designing structures to be the least vulnerable within earthquake-prone areas is a serious challenge for structural engineers. One common and useful tool that structural engineers use to predict the vulnerability of a structure during an earthquake is a fragility curve. However, most structural fragility curves do not take into consideration the contribution of pile foundation systems in the structural vulnerability. Therefore, this study aims to modify existing fragility curves of a six-story fixed-base steel frame hospital building with buckling-restrained braces, to incorporate the effect of helical pile group behavior on the fragility of the structure. To that end, a finite …

The Extended Effect Of Top-Dressed Recovered Struvite Fertiliser On Residual Irish Grassland Soil Phosphorus Levels Compared To Commercial Phosphorus Fertiliser, Ciarán O’Donnell, Denise Barnett, Joe Harrington, Niamh Power Jan 2022

The Extended Effect Of Top-Dressed Recovered Struvite Fertiliser On Residual Irish Grassland Soil Phosphorus Levels Compared To Commercial Phosphorus Fertiliser, Ciarán O’Donnell, Denise Barnett, Joe Harrington, Niamh Power

Publications

Phosphorus (P) is an essential growth-limiting nutrient that cannot be synthetically produced. Mineral P fertilisers are typically applied to crops to sustain modern farming practice and food production. These fertilisers are generally derived from finite phosphate ore, for which there is much concern over long-term sustainability. To address these concerns, various technologies have been developed to recover P from municipal wastewater treatment plants. One product recovered from these processes is struvite, which is a precipitate formed of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate. To analyse the fertilisation value of the recovered struvite, field trials were conducted on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) over …

Publications

Investigating the impact of land cover change in hydrological modelling is essential for water resources management. This paper investigates the importance of landcover change in the development of a physically-based hydrological model called SWAT. The study area considered is the Dodder River basin located in southern Dublin, Ireland. Runoff at the basin outlet was simulated using SWAT for 1993–2019 using five landcover maps obtained for 1990, 2000, 2006, 2012 and 2018. Results indicate that, in general, the SWAT model-simulated runoff for a chosen time-period are closer to the real-world observations when the landcover data used for simulation was collated as …

Publications

Beneficial use of dredged sediments, either in harbours or waterways, is based on their potential as alternative resources. Such sediments can be considered as bulk materials for industrial needs, which is predicated on their current waste status or meeting end-of-waste constraints. They also can be an integral part of beneficial use projects using sediments as a bulk component, including civil engineering and landscaping. This is particularly important for beneficial use projects focusing on climate change effects mitigation, such as flood protection works, coastline defence or littoral urban areas redevelopment. When dredged sediment is used as a bulk material, its acceptability …

The Role Of Ball Backspin Alignment And Variability In Basketball Shooting Accuracy, Nathan Slegers, Dave Love Jan 2022

The Role Of Ball Backspin Alignment And Variability In Basketball Shooting Accuracy, Nathan Slegers, Dave Love

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Interaction between the shooting hand and ball at the moment a basketball is released generates a three dimensional backspin of the ball. This study is the first to investigate how characteristics of the backspin alignment and variability contribute to lateral shooting accuracy. Spin axis (SA) direction and backspin magnitude were measured on 25 shot attempts for 26 collegiate basketball players (male: n = 16, female: n = 10). The mean SA alignment, as viewed from the shooting hand side, was found to be tipped down and towards the target (p < 0.001). Standard deviations (SD) in the SA alignment were strong predictors of lateral accuracy (vertical SD: r = 0.80, p < 0.001, forward-backward SD: r = 0.51, p = 0.01), with variation in the vertical alignment being the best predictor. No significant correlation between mean SA misalignment and lateral accuracy was observed. However, intra-individual relationships between SA misalignment and lateral error revealed that individuals tended to have 0.17 degrees more misalignment for each cm of lateral error (p < 0.001, 95% CI: 0.24–0.09). These indicate that while an individual’s mean alignment may not predict lateral accuracy, improving one’s SA alignment and reducing alignment variability may increase lateral accuracy.

Multiscale Simulation And Machine Learning-Assisted Performance Prediction For Cementitious Composites, Gideon A. Lyngdoh Jan 2022

Multiscale Simulation And Machine Learning-Assisted Performance Prediction For Cementitious Composites, Gideon A. Lyngdoh

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world for building infrastructures, bridges, and tunnels. However, cement production contributes to 5-7% of the global CO2 emissions, and thus, there is a significant need for innovative sustainable alternatives without compromising on the mechanical properties. Most of the approaches to address these concerns so far rely on the trial and error-based experimental response. Hence, robust multiscale simulation-based design approaches are needed to be developed for fundamental understanding as well as the comprehensive design of these new sustainable innovative materials. However, performing the simulations with millions of degrees of freedom could …

What Are The Desired Properties Of Recycling-Derived Fertilisers From An End-User Perspective?, Aoife Egan, Amrita Saju, Ivona Sigurnjak, Erik Meers, Niamh Power

Publications

The circular economy aims to promote the use of recycled products and to close the nutrient cycle loop by avoiding nutrient leakage and detrimental environmental effects, while also reducing the dependency on fossil fuels. The production of nitrogen is energy-intensive, requiring natural gas, whereas, finite resources like phosphorus and potassium are mined. Recent developments in nutrient recovery technologies have resulted in different types of recycling-derived fertilisers (RDFs) with the potential to substitute commonly used synthetic mineral fertilisers. This study aims to understand perceptions and preferences regarding the properties and parameters that end-users find important in RDFs. A better understanding of …

Some Insights On Flow Over Sharp-Crested Weirs Using Computational Fluid Dynamics: Implications For Enhanced Flow Measurement, Joseph M. Sinclair, S. Karan Venayagamoorthy, Timothy K. Gates

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study reexamines flow over a sharp-crested weir using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to identify the optimal operating range under which the weir functions with accuracy as a free-flowing measurement device. A numerical parametric study was conducted for two separate channel and weir geometries under a range of flow rates resulting in different h/P values, where h is the elevation head over the weir crest, and P is the weir height. Analysis of velocity and pressure profiles over the weir revealed three distinct flow regimes: a high acceleration regime, an ideal operating regime, and a weir-inundated regime that may lead …

"The Human Readiness Level (HRL) Scale is a simple 9-level scale for evaluating, tracking, and communicating the readiness of a technology for safe and effective human use. It is modeled after the well-established Technology Readiness Level (TRL) framework that is used throughout the government and industry to communicate the maturity of a technology and to support decision making about technology acquisition. Here we (1) introduce the ANSI/HFES 400-2021 Standard that defines the HRL scale and (2) provide concrete examples of evaluation activities to support the application of HRLs in the development of automated driving systems."

Detecting And Tracking Vulnerable Road Users' Trajectories Using Different Types Of Sensors Fusion, Zhongchuan Wang Jan 2022

Detecting And Tracking Vulnerable Road Users' Trajectories Using Different Types Of Sensors Fusion, Zhongchuan Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Vulnerable road user (VRU) detection and tracking has been a key challenge in transportation research. Different types of sensors such as the camera, LiDAR, and inertial measurement units (IMUs) have been used for this purpose. For detection and tracking with the camera, it is necessary to perform calibration to obtain correct GPS trajectories. This method is often tedious and necessitates accurate ground truth data. Moreover, if the camera performs any pan-tilt-zoom function, it is usually necessary to recalibrate the camera. In this thesis, we propose camera calibration using an auxiliary sensor: ultra-wideband (UWB). USBs are capable of tracking a road …
