Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of CO2 curing including pre-conditioning on alkali-activated slags, activated by different alkaline activators (NaOH, Na2SiO3, and KOH solution), is studied. While dry pre-conditioning before the CO2 curing increases the strengths of all mixtures, the effect of pre-conditioning time is dependent on the alkali activator used to produce samples. The CO3-bearing reaction product in samples also depends on the alkali activator. Gaylussite, pirssonite, hydrotalcite, and calcite are observed in the NaOH activator, and calcite, hydrotalcite, and C4AcH11 are detected in the NaOH and Na2SiO3 (9:1) …

The measurement of urban aerosol particle size distributions (PSDs) is of particular importance as they enable characterization of size-dependent processes that govern a particle's transport, transformation, and fate in the urban atmosphere. PSDs also improve our ability to link air pollution to health effects through evaluation of particle deposition in the respiratory system and inhalation toxicity. To inform future measurements of urban aerosol observations, this paper reviews and critically analyzes the current state …

Computing Accurate Probabilistic Estimates Of One-D Entropy From Equiprobable Random Samples, Hoshin V. Gupta, Mohammed Reza Ehsani, Tirthankar Roy, Maria A. Sans-Fuentes, Uwe Ehret, Ali Behrangi Jun 2021

Computing Accurate Probabilistic Estimates Of One-D Entropy From Equiprobable Random Samples, Hoshin V. Gupta, Mohammed Reza Ehsani, Tirthankar Roy, Maria A. Sans-Fuentes, Uwe Ehret, Ali Behrangi

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

We develop a simple Quantile Spacing (QS) method for accurate probabilistic estimation of one-dimensional entropy from equiprobable random samples, and compare it with the popular Bin-Counting (BC) and Kernel Density (KD) methods. In contrast to BC, which uses equal-width bins with varying probability mass, the QS method uses estimates of the quantiles that divide the support of the data generating probability density function (pdf) into equal-probability-mass intervals. And, whereas BC and KD each require optimal tuning of a hyper-parameter whose value varies with sample size and shape of the pdf, QS only requires specification of the number of quantiles to …

Chorine Conversion: Biological And Water Quality Impact On Activated Carbon Block Point Of Use Filters, Horace S. Jakpa Jun 2021

Chorine Conversion: Biological And Water Quality Impact On Activated Carbon Block Point Of Use Filters, Horace S. Jakpa

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Point-of-use (POU) activated carbon (AC) filters are ubiquitous in many U.S. households. AC can reduce concentrations of lead, other heavy metals, and mitigate taste and odor issues. However, AC filters also remove residual disinfectants, thus allowing for the proliferation of microbes in the filter. In chloraminated systems, this can lead to localized, filter-induced nitrification. Most notably, high nitrite and nitrate in drinking water can cause methemoglobinemia (blue baby syndrome) in children under the age of three, raising public health concerns.

As a control measure for nitrification within distribution systems, utilities practice periodic, short-term secondary disinfectant switches from chloramine to free …
