Evaluation Of Unconventional Signalized Intersections On Arterial Roads And A Proposition For A Novel Intersection Design, Ma'en Al-Omari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Several unconventional intersection designs were proposed and implemented to enhance traffic safety and operation at intersections. The efficiency of these intersection designs was not sufficiently evaluated in the previous research because of the limited implementation of such designs. However, with the growing interest in the implementation of unconventional intersections by municipalities and transport agencies, it has become a need for a comprehensive evaluation of their safety and operational benefits. Therefore, this dissertation aims to evaluate the safety and operational aspects of unconventional intersection designs by employing different research approaches: crash analysis, microscopic simulation, and driving simulation. Firstly, this dissertation evaluated …
The Use Of Physically Based Models And Ensemble Forecasting For Storm Surge Risk Assessment In A Changing Climate, Jeane Camelo
The Use Of Physically Based Models And Ensemble Forecasting For Storm Surge Risk Assessment In A Changing Climate, Jeane Camelo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Storm surge has been the deadliest and costliest hurricane induced hazard in the coastal United States. In order to save property and lives, emergency managers must issue advisories guided by numerical models in a timely manner. However, these surge models are highly dependent on weather forecasts which contain uncertainties themselves as hurricanes traverse through the waters before making landfall. This dissertation aims to understand the contribution of uncertainties in hurricane properties, particularly the wind intensity which can contribute to uncertainties in storm surge models. Investigating these properties through numerical modeling is both computationally and time intensive. However by developing a …

Prediction Of Mean Wave Overtopping At Simple Sloped Breakwaters Using Kernel-Based Methods, Shabnam Hosseinzadeh, Amir Etemad-Shahidi, Ali Koosheh
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The accurate prediction of the mean wave overtopping rate at breakwaters is vital for a safe design. Hence, providing a robust tool as a preliminary estimator can be useful for practitioners. Recently, soft computing tools such as artificial neural networks (ANN) have been developed as alternatives to traditional overtopping formulae. The goal of this paper is to assess the capabilities of two kernel-based methods, namely Gaussian process regression (GPR) and support vector regression for the prediction of mean wave overtopping rate at sloped breakwaters. An extensive dataset taken from the EurOtop database, including rubble mound structures with permeable core, straight …
Improving Basalt Wettability To De-Risk Co2 Geo-Storage In Basaltic Formations, Stefan Iglauer, Ahmed Al-Yaseri
Improving Basalt Wettability To De-Risk Co2 Geo-Storage In Basaltic Formations, Stefan Iglauer, Ahmed Al-Yaseri
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
CO2 geo-storage in basaltic formations has recently been identified as a viable option to rapidly dispose large quantities of CO2, hence mitigating anthropogenic CO2 emissions. However, it has been shown that basalt is weakly water-wet or intermediate-wet at typical storage conditions, which reduces capillary trapping capacities and increases lateral and vertical spreading of the CO2 plume; and these effects increase project risk. We thus propose here to prime basalt surfaces with anionic surfactant (here we used sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate), and demonstrate that such priming is highly efficient, and renders the basalt completely water-wet even …

Individual-Based Modelling Of Cyanobacteria Blooms: Physical And Physiological Processes, Mohammad H. Ranjbar, David P. Hamilton, Amir Etemad-Shahidi, Fernanda Helfer
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Lakes and reservoirs throughout the world are increasingly adversely affected by cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs). The development and spatiotemporal distributions of blooms are governed by complex physical mixing and transport processes that interact with physiological processes affecting the growth and loss of bloom-forming species. Individual-based models (IBMs) can provide a valuable tool for exploring and integrating some of these processes. Here we contend that the advantages of IBMs have not been fully exploited. The main reasons for the lack of progress in mainstreaming IBMs in numerical modelling are their complexity and high computational demand. In this review, we identify …

Co2 – Brine – Sandstone Wettability Evaluation At Reservoir Conditions Via Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Measurements, Auby Baban, Ahmed Al-Yaseri, Alireza Keshavarz, R. Amin, Stefan Iglauer
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
CO2-rock wettability is a key parameter which governs CO2 trapping capacities and containment security in the context of CO2 geo-sequestration schemes. However, significant uncertainties still exist in terms of predicting CO2 rock wettability at true reservoir conditions. This study thus reports on wettability measurements via independent Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments on sandstone (CO2–brine systems) to quantify Wettability Indices (WI) using the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) scale. The results show that CO2 (either molecularly dissolved or as a separate supercritical phase) significantly reduced the hydrophilicity of the sandstone from strongly …

Effect Of Co2 Flooding On The Wettability Evolution Of Sand-Stone, Cut Aja Fauziah, Ahmed Al-Yaseri, Emad Al-Khdheeawi, Nilesh Kumar Jha, Hussein R. Abid, Stefan Iglauer, Christopher Lagat, Ahmed Barifcani
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Wettability is one of the main parameters controlling CO2 injectivity and the movement of CO2 plume during geological CO2 sequestration. Despite significant research efforts, there is still a high uncertainty associated with the wettability of CO2/brine/rock systems and how they evolve with CO2 exposure. This study, therefore, aims to measure the contact angle of sandstone samples with varying clay content before and after laboratory core flooding at different reservoir pressures, of 10 MPa and 15 MPa, and a temperature of 323 K. The samples’ microstructural changes are also assessed to investigate any potential alteration …

Calibration Of Iri-Based Psi Equation Using Updated Quarter-Car Parameters, Shirin Bahaaeldin Hassan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The international roughness index (IRI) was established in the 1980s and later used in generating the present serviceability index (PSI), which was developed to predict present serviceability rating (PSR). PSR is a measure of ride quality ratings made by a panel of highway users. The ratings range from 0 to 5, where “0” for very poor and “5” for very good. Various studies had formulated the relationship between IRI and PSI for different types of pavements, such as flexible, rigid, and composite pavements. The current IRI-based PSI equation being used among many state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) was proposed by …

Effects Of Changes In Land Use Land Cover And Climate On Long-Term Total Dissolved Solids Trends In The Mid-Atlantic Region Of The United States, Melaine Edouard Kolimedje
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Mid-Atlantic region (MAR) of the U.S. is subjected to a variety of stressors that affect the headwaters of the major rivers. Some of these stressors are abandoned mine drainage, agriculture, municipal point sources, urban areas, out-of-basin diversions, competing water uses, rapid population growths in the lowlands, alterations in water availability due to climate change and habitat alteration. In addition to these regional stressors, the rapid population growths and energy sources shifting have resulted in changes in land use and land cover (LULC) over the last few decades. The interactive effects of LULC and interannual/long-term climate changes have resulted in …

Abstract
Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid Migration in Ground Subsurface
Hanadi Al-Hammad
Groundwater aquifers are vital source for water supplies. Such water supplies are under serious potential threats of pollution due to various contaminants. One of the categories of contaminants that pollute groundwater aquifers is non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL). NAPLs are immiscible organic compounds. NAPLs comprise two categories based on comparison of its density with density of water. The NAPLs that have density less that density of water are known as light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) such as Diesel, Toluene, and mineral oil. NAPLs with density higher than the density of …

Modeling Operational Performance Of Urban Roads With Heterogeneous Traffic Conditions, Swapneel R. Kodupuganti, Sonu Mathew, Srinivas S. Pulugurtha
Mineta Transportation Institute
The rapid growth in population and related demand for travel during the past few decades has had a catalytic effect on traffic congestion, air quality, and safety in many urban areas. Transportation managers and planners have planned for new facilities to cater to the needs of users of alternative modes of transportation (e.g., public transportation, walking, and bicycling) over the next decade. However, there are no widely accepted methods, nor there is enough evidence to justify whether such plans are instrumental in improving mobility of the transportation system. Therefore, this project researches the operational performance of urban roads with heterogeneous …

Many factors affect pavement compaction quality, which can vary. Such variability may result in an additional number of passes required, extended working hours, higher energy consumption, and negative environmental impacts. The use of Intelligent Compaction (IC) technology during construction can improve the quality and longevity of pavement structures while reducing risk for contractors and project owners alike. This study develops guidelines for the implementation of IC in the compaction of pavement layers as well as performing a preliminary life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of IC technology compared to the conventional compaction approach. The environmental impacts of the improved construction process were …

Recovery Of Phosphorus From Florida Phosphatic Waste Clay, Amir Eskanlou
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This MS thesis examines the recovery of phosphorus (P) from Florida waste clay (WC). A comprehensive literature review revealed that: (i)-The most important values being lost to WC are P and rare earth elements (REEs). For the recovery of these values from WC, two crucial attempts are the removal of extremely fine-sized clays, followed by the recovery of phosphate content, which can pave the path for the recovery of REEs; (ii)-Any scientific/ technological solution should, at the same time, be economically and environmentally attractive to the industry. As such, moving from mostly chemical separation processes to the primarily physical/ physicochemical …
A Parametric Study Of Lateral-Torsional Buckling In Pultruded Frp Beams Using Abaqus, Robert Nathaniel Baylor
A Parametric Study Of Lateral-Torsional Buckling In Pultruded Frp Beams Using Abaqus, Robert Nathaniel Baylor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites continue to gain popularity in civil and mechanical infrastructure due to a high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion-resistance, and low maintenance requirements. FRP can also fulfill niche roles requiring non-conductivity and magnetic transparency. The longitudinal forming of pultruded FRP makes it a natural choice for lightweight beams. Although FRP composites have a high strength for their weight, the elastic and shear moduli for glass FRP may only be 1/7 and 1/30 that of steel, respectively. These low stiffnesses make FRP composite beams particularly susceptible to lateral-torsional buckling (LTB). In addition, the low shear to elastic stiffness amplifies …
Estimation And Mitigation Of Stresses In Mass Concrete Structures Containing Ground Granulated Blast Furnaceslag And Fly Ash, Guadalupe Leon
Estimation And Mitigation Of Stresses In Mass Concrete Structures Containing Ground Granulated Blast Furnaceslag And Fly Ash, Guadalupe Leon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In large concrete structures, due to concrete’s low thermal conductivity, the interior temperature rise can approach the concrete’s adiabatic temperature rise. As the concrete’s surface losses heat to the environment and cools rapidly, the interior of the concrete attempts to expand while the exterior provides an internal restraint. The phenomenon causes thermal stresses at the concrete’s surface. If the thermal stresses exceed the concrete’s tensile strength, there is a high probability of cracking. The cracks usually appear during the first few days after construction while the concrete’s tensile strength is low. These early-age cracks can reduce the service life of …
Nondestructive Condition Assessment Of Civil Infrastructure Using Ultrasonic Technique, Tyler Keith Ashbrook
Nondestructive Condition Assessment Of Civil Infrastructure Using Ultrasonic Technique, Tyler Keith Ashbrook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Civil Infrastructure controls the way people live by providing safe passage and shelter across the entire globe. Since safety leads the concern in infrastructure, it is essential to ensure that these structures have been adequately tested and analyzed periodically. Testing these structures can be extremely expensive when parts are required to be removed to capture the flaw, which is why nondestructive testing (NDT) continues to grow in demand since it can evaluate the structural component in-situ without causing any damage. Ultrasonic testing (UT) helps to adequately sustain and advance the safety in existing and future infrastructure across the globe. Continual …
Current Status Of Design And Construction Of Piles With A Pilot Hole On Rock, Charles C. Crowner
Current Status Of Design And Construction Of Piles With A Pilot Hole On Rock, Charles C. Crowner
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Driven piles at project sites get their load bearing capacity from side friction along the driven lengths as well as from end resistance. Pilot holes is a pile driving assistance method used to aid driving displacement piles through hard/ dense layers and rock. These pilot holes can be a size smaller or larger than the pile that is to be installed. The pilot hole is first drilled down to a specific depth. The use of a pilot hole reduces the “end bearing” and “side resistance” within the drilled zone and aids the driving of the pile. This process also complicates …

"Corrosion of steel reinforcement and carbon dioxide emissions are two major global problems. Different methods, techniques, and materials have been implemented to mitigate these problems. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar presents itself as a solid alternative to replace conventional steel reinforcement owing to its fantastic features in resisting corrosion. Its demand is progressively increasing. Cement-based concrete, on the other hand, is not eco-friendly due to the excessive amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions yielded from its cement production. One of the alternatives used to mitigate the use of cement in concrete is fly ash. Fly ash is considered …

Axial Performance Of Self-Consolidating Concrete-Filled Fiber Tubes, Joshua David Carter
Axial Performance Of Self-Consolidating Concrete-Filled Fiber Tubes, Joshua David Carter
Masters Theses
"Concrete filled fiber tubes can be used to increase ductility and strength of a concrete member and self-consolidating concrete is an ideal material to use in practical applications of concrete-filled fiber tubular columns. However, the propensity of self-consolidating concrete to autogenous shrinkage could reduce the effectiveness of the concrete confinement. This research investigates the use of self-consolidating concrete in pre-cast FRP tubes and various methods of shrinkage reduction and compensation to increase the axial performance of said self-consolidating concrete-filled fiber tubes. Axial compression tests were performed under monotonic and cyclic conditions to determine the stress-strain relationship of the self-consolidating concrete …

“Tornadoes are violent natural hazards that could caused significant property loss and fatalities. Statistical data indicates that most fatalities during tornado incidents were caused by the building failure under tornadoes. For example, in the 2011 Joplin Tornado, 161 people were killed, and 84 percent of the fatalities were related to the failure of buildings. In addition, most of the significant, tornado-induced property loss and fatalities are relevant to the tornadoes passing through the densely populated regions. Besides buildings, bridges were also severely damaged or destroyed by tornadoes in the United States. To reduce the tornado-induced loss, it is imperative to …
