Effect Of Reinforcement Around Web Opening On The Cyclic Behavior Of Exterior Rc Beam-Column Joints, Ahmed F. Deifalla, Amin Saleh, Sherif Elwan, Mostafa Hamad, Sherif Elzeiny
Future Engineering Journal
In many situations, it is necessary to have a beam web opening in the plastic hinge location. However, very limited studies investigated the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column joints with nearby beam web openings. A previous study was conducted for investigating the behavior of beam-column joints with unreinforced nearby web opening. In this study, the effect of adding additional reinforcing around a nearby web opening on the seismic behavior of RC exterior Beam-Column joints is being investigated. Nine full-scale beam-column joints were tested, four joints had an unreinforced opening, while five joints had reinforced opening. The behavior of the …

Optimum Cross Section And Longitudinal Profile For Unstiffened Fully Composite Steel Beams, Ahmed M. Ebid Dr.
Future Engineering Journal
Composite steel beam is commonly used element in multistory steel buildings today. The composite action between the concrete deck and the steel beam reduces both steel weight and deflection, accordingly, enhance floor economy and serviceability. Many earlier researches were carried out to optimize the design of the composite steel beams under both static loading and dynamic behavior. None of these researches was concerned in optimizing the cross section or the longitudinal profile of built-up composite steel beams. The aim of this research is to develop simple and practical equations to determine the optimum cross section dimensions and optimum longitudinal profile …
Mit-S1 Constitutive Model Calibration For A Portland-Area Soil, Steven Ryan Young
Mit-S1 Constitutive Model Calibration For A Portland-Area Soil, Steven Ryan Young
Dissertations and Theses
Soils that are intermediate to sands and clays are a challenge for geotechnical engineers since most methods for interpreting soil properties or soil behaviors are based on sands or clays and do not address behaviors of intermediate soils. This is a particular challenge for engineers in the Portland-area where many of the major soil units are composed of intermediate soils. Analysis of intermediate soils is further challenged since many standard constitutive models are based on sandy or clay-like soils. However, the MIT-S1 constitutive model is capable of capturing intermediate soil behavior. A calibration of the MIT-S1 constitutive model for Portland-area …

Management Of The Phosphorus-Cladophora Dynamic At A Site On Lake Ontario Using A Multi-Module Bioavailable P Model, Martin Auer, Cory P. Mcdonald, Anika Kuczynski, Chenfu Huang
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The filamentous green alga Cladophora grows to nuisance proportions in Lake Ontario. Stimulated by high phosphorus concentrations, nuisance growth results in the degradation of beaches and clogging of industrial water intakes with attendant loss of beneficial uses. We develop a multi-module bioavailable phosphorus model to examine the efficacy of phosphorus management strategies in mitigating nuisance algal growth. The model platform includes modules simulating hydrodynamics (FVCOM), phosphorus-phytoplankton dynamics (GEM) and Cladophora growth (GLCMv3). The model is applied along a 25 km stretch of the Lake Ontario nearshore, extending east from Toronto, ON and receiving effluent from three wastewater treatment plants. Simulation …

Implementation Of A Novel Inertial Mass System And Comparison To Existing Mass-Rig Systems For Shake Table Experiments, Alvaro Lopez, Peter Dusicka
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Shake table testing is one of the more effective experimental approaches used to study and evaluate seismic performance of structures. Reduced-scale models can still result in large-scale specimens where incorporating the required inertial mass effectively and safely can be challenging. This study proposes a new system of arranging the mass in the experiments that combines the realism of mass participation during earthquake excitation when supported by the shake table with laboratory practicality considerations of the mass positioned off the specimen. The characteristics and dynamic motion equations for the proposed system are described and applied to shake table experiments involving large-scale …

To increase the reliability of materials the computational analysis has been considered a vital tool for designing the components in the mechanical and nuclear engineering. By increasing a high percentage of carbon in liquid steel subsequently enhance the hardness, elasticity and toughness of the materials. In this research high carbon steel has been used due to its wear resistance properties in order to increasing hardness and strength. The findings of this research reveal the high carbon steel a good replacement material for conventional iron due to its low weight. Modeling and analysis of the steel, metallic glass and high carbon …
Numerical Simulation Of Continuous Cone Penetration And Interpretation Of Cptu Dissipation Tests, Andrew Phillip Eugene Huffman
Numerical Simulation Of Continuous Cone Penetration And Interpretation Of Cptu Dissipation Tests, Andrew Phillip Eugene Huffman
Dissertations and Theses
The piezocone penetration test (CPTu) is a commonly used method of geotechnical site investigation. The CPTu is especially useful because it provides a nearly continuous data profile of in-situ soil behavior, which can be correlated to useful engineering parameters. However, limitations exist for interpretation of geotechnical properties from CPTu data and for numerical analysis of cone penetration problems. The research presented in this thesis examines interpretation of coefficient of consolidation from CPTu dissipation test data and implementation of an algorithm to advance numerical simulation of cone penetration problems. This thesis presents analysis of CPTu dissipation responses from field-measured and numerically …
Exposing Nuclear Power Plants, Sophia Austin
Exposing Nuclear Power Plants, Sophia Austin
Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards
This paper will begin by outlining the eco-justice topic of nuclear power and its resulting nuclear waste, and then move on to examining and making claims about the justice (distributive, procedural, and recognition-based), evidence, and process behind the development and decommissioning of these plants. Through this, we will discover historical and present ties to racism - especially as we explore the relationship between nuclear power and the white racial frame, resulting in the objectification, oppression, and suppression of the voices of Indigenous communities and people of color throughout history and into the present moment. After addressing and reflecting on many …

Moving Beyond ‘More Crop Per Drop’: Insights From Two Decades Of Research On Agricultural Water Productivity, Meredith Giordano, Susanne M. Scheierling, David O. Tréguer, Hugh Turral, Peter G. Mccornick
Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications
Concern over increasing water scarcity has led to the introduction of the concept of agricultural water productivity and an emphasis on interventions to achieve ‘more crop per drop’. Yet, a strong debate continues on how the concept is to be defined and used. Drawing largely from the irrigation literature, the origins of the concept and its methodological developments are reviewed, and its use in applied work over two decades is discussed. Based on this analysis of conceptual and applied research, key insights into the concept’s contributions and limitations are presented, as well as opportunities for further refinements.

The digitisation of construction is taking root as Building Information Modelling is becoming more prevalent across the industry. From an Irish context, the adoption rate of BIM has been slow; nationally its advantages and merits have been welcomed and the appropriate government support is either available, soon to be implemented or in the early conceptual stage. Within the Irish governments Project Ireland 2040 framework there are significant infrastructure developments looming ahead, in particular regarding ports and harbours. The importance of this type of infrastructure is only further compounded due to the UK’s departure from the EU and the need for …

An Analysis Of Estimated Costs Versus Actual Costs In Usace Section 14 Emergency Streambank Protection Projects, Hunter Waugaman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Civil Works projects are designed to provide national management of water resources. These works use emergency streambank protection to protect public facilities, like bridges and highways. The projects under this authority have limited funding, therefore, many design and field studies are omitted, which increases project uncertainties resulting in cost overruns and contract modifications. This study analyzes previously constructed projects by comparing the independent government estimate with the contractor’s actual costs and identifying the variables causing these differences via statistical analysis. The variables identified are categorized into those elements that affect the accuracy of …

Climate Resilience: Examination Of Revised Heat Transfer Models In The Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model For Pavement Temperature Prediction, Austin Michael Jarrell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) is commonly referenced as the state-of-the-practice for the analysis and design of new and rehabilitated pavement assets. The Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM) incorporated within the MEPDG is a well-recognized and standardized method for estimating temperature profiles in pavements; temperature is a portion of the climate inputs in the MEPDG. Many have already begun to convert atmospheric temperature predictions from externally based climate models into the MEPDG to create robust designs for climate change. As pavement designers and researchers seek robust solutions while formulating resilient pavement designs, it is likely that the EICM …

Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is evolving as a new method of improving the mechanical properties of soil. This environmentally friendly technique is a bio-geo-chemical process where microbes play a key role in increasing soil strength through precipitating calcium carbonate. Past studies at Boise State University have indicated that MICP via bio-stimulation could be a viable alternative for expansive clayey soil treatments. However, these studies raised a new question about the relationship between soil composition, urease activity, and calcite precipitation. To answer this question, batch studies were conducted using autoclaved-sterilized sand mixed with different percentages of non-sterile natural clay and …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The American Institute of Steel Construction hosts a competition for graduating college seniors each year. The competition is designing and fabricating a scaled steel bridge within certain parameters. Each year the parameters change to allow different seniors to face similar challenges without copying the previous year’s work. Before the outbreak of COVID-19, a bridge was fabricated as per the rules in the 2020, and the same bridge was used for the 2021 competition. With a bridge already fabricated and being used for the competition, a question arose about analyzing the bridge.
This thesis encompasses the entire analysis of the steel …
Northeast Florida: A New Hotspot For Hurricane Damage?, William R. Dally, Raphael Crowley, Nick Hudyma
Northeast Florida: A New Hotspot For Hurricane Damage?, William R. Dally, Raphael Crowley, Nick Hudyma
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Until recent Hurricanes Matthew and Irma struck northeast Florida, Hurricane Dora had been the first and only hurricane-strength storm in recorded history to strike the region. The area had gradually become regarded as a safe spot as storms at that latitude generally curved away from Jacksonville and northeast Florida, and turned north to make landfall in the Carolinas. Unknown to most, Vilano Beach had been experiencing steady yet chronic beach erosion and was already in a highly vulnerable state in many places when the recent storms struck. The cause of the ongoing background erosion continues to be a source of …
