A Comparative Study Of Insertion Loss Of Traffic Noise Barriers In Georgia, Pablo Giraldo, Jidong Yang
A Comparative Study Of Insertion Loss Of Traffic Noise Barriers In Georgia, Pablo Giraldo, Jidong Yang
Master of Science in Civil Engineering Theses
In this paper, three types of traffic noise barriers, interlocking steel panels, precast concrete panels, and Paragon panel 23-T, were evaluated in terms of insertion loss. Field test was conducted for the noise barriers recently installed as part of the Northwest Express Project in Georgia. The noise insertion loss was measured as noise difference in A-weighted decibels (dBA) immediately before and after the barriers. The insertion loss was then evaluated by correlating with noise barrier types and other influential variables, including the separation distance of barriers from traffic, the level of traffic, wind speed, and pavement types. The results showed …
That Bike Is Too Heavy: Merging Bicycling Physics, Human Physiology And Travel Behavior, Alexander Y. Bigazzi
That Bike Is Too Heavy: Merging Bicycling Physics, Human Physiology And Travel Behavior, Alexander Y. Bigazzi
PSU Transportation Seminars
Are the Biketown bikes too heavy? Does better gear motivate people to cycle more? How much faster will someone go on an e-bike?
Although urban cycling is widely known as physically active transportation, the actual physics of cycling have been given little attention in transportation engineering and planning. In contrast, the field of sports science has developed detailed data and models of road bicycle performance, but only for sport and racing cyclists.
What can we learn about utilitarian cycling by integrating knowledge of the physical attributes of bicycles and cyclists?
This seminar examines the ways in which bicycle physics, and …
Analytical And Numerical Modeling Of Cavity Expansion In Anisotropic Poroelastoplastic Soil, Kai Liu
Analytical And Numerical Modeling Of Cavity Expansion In Anisotropic Poroelastoplastic Soil, Kai Liu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Cavity expansion/contraction problems have attracted intensive attentions over the past several decades due to its versatile applications, such as the interpretation of pressuremeter/piezocone penetration testing results and the modelling of pile installation/tunnel excavation in civil engineering, and the prediction of critical mud pressure required to maintain the wellbore stability in petroleum engineering. Despite the fact that various types of constitutive models have been covered in the literature on this subject, the soils and/or rocks were usually treated as isotropic geomaterials.
In recognition of the above fact, this research makes a substantial extension of the fundamental cavity expansion theory by considering …

Because ports are considered to be the heart of the maritime transportation system, thereby assessing port performance is necessary for a nation’s development and economic success. This study proposes a novel metric, namely, “port performance index (PPI)”, to determine the overall performance and utilization of inland waterway ports based on six criteria, port facility, port availability, port economics, port service, port connectivity, and port environment. Unlike existing literature, which mainly ranks ports based on quantitative factors, this study utilizes a Bayesian Network (BN) model that focuses on both quantitative and qualitative factors to rank a port. The …

How Moisture Content Levels And Packing Density In Soil Affect Crude Oil Spreads, Shaylin N. Williams
How Moisture Content Levels And Packing Density In Soil Affect Crude Oil Spreads, Shaylin N. Williams
Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal
Crude oil spills are one of the most destructive disasters that can occur, and they are extremely difficult to recover from. Many studies focus on what can be done to clean these crude oil spills, but more research should be focused on means of prevention. Currently, very little is known about how the moisture content levels and the packing efficiency of soil can affect an oil spill. These two factors alone can offer a variety of information to environmental agencies, manufacturers, and refineries. Through utilization of a chemical engineering lab, a recording mechanism, and ImagePro software, data was collected and …

A State-Of-The-Art Review Of Bending And Shear Behaviors Of Corrosion-Damaged Reinforced Concrete Beams, Mahmoodreza Soltani, Amir Safiey, Almarie Brennan
Publications
Steel corrosion is mainly at fault for the trend of deterioration among U.S. infrastructure—namely, bridges, pipelines, and wharves. Reinforced concrete (RC) is used as the primary construction material worldwide. Reinforcement corrosion can significantly impair mechanical properties of RC members, including shear and bending capacities. In the past decades, several attempts have been made to investigate the impacts of corrosion on the mechanical behavior of RC members. It can be observed that the number of research programs conducted on this topic has rapidly increased in recent years. Therefore, there is a need in the body of knowledge to encapsulate the relevant …

Auto-Calibration Of Wim Using Traffic Stream Characteristics, Johnson Baker
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project evaluates the performance of Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) auto-calibration methods used by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT). Typical auto-calibration algorithms compare the WIM measured weights of vehicles from the traffic stream to reference values, using five-axle tractor-trailer configured trucks for comparisons, e.g. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Class 9. Parameters of the existing algorithms including the Front Axle Weight (FAW) reference value, the sampling frequency required to update the calibration factor, and thresholds for Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) bins were evaluated. The primary metric used to estimate algorithm performance was Mean Absolute Percent Error (MAPE) between the WIM and static …
Enhancing Anaerobic Oxidation Of Methane In Landfill Cover Soil, Niloofar Parsaeifard
Enhancing Anaerobic Oxidation Of Methane In Landfill Cover Soil, Niloofar Parsaeifard
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Methane (CH4) is one of the major greenhouse gases (GHG) generated in landfills and has a global warming effect 28 times more than carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, decreasing methane emissions into the atmosphere from landfills is critically important. In the upper portions of a landfill cover, methane is exposed to oxygen and oxidized aerobically to carbon dioxide while passing through the cover soil; this lowers the overall contribution of the landfill to climate change. However, because of the low permeability of the landfill cover, no aerobic oxidation occurs in the bottom of the cover because oxygen cannot penetrate to those …
Performance Of Concrete Slabs With Embedded Hydronic Loops For Geothermally Based Bridge De-Icing Applications, Mark Hurley
Performance Of Concrete Slabs With Embedded Hydronic Loops For Geothermally Based Bridge De-Icing Applications, Mark Hurley
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Geothermal energy has always been available as a renewable thermal reserve, however, only recently has it been unlocked as a potential source of energy to de-ice bridges and roadways. The ability to efficiently extract the geothermal reserves has been accomplished with the advent of new technology. Each progressing year, the refinement of technology has led to a reduction in the input required to achieve a desired output. For the case of bridge de-icing, the extracted input of thermal energy must exceed the required demands to permit de-icing. The conventional approach to de-icing (using chemicals, salt, and sand) works as a …

Effect Of Termite Gut Microorganism Tav5 Ratios On Lignin Degradation And Methane Generation From Paper, Yard, And Wood Waste, Hoda Rahimi
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Methane from anaerobic processes is being increasingly utilized as an alternative energy source in developed countries, via large projects that extract methane from landfills or wastewater treatment plants. Anaerobic degradation of organic material (biomass) involves decomposition by bacteria under humid conditions without any oxygen. Organic carbon deposited in landfills is converted by microbes to carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). If the methane is not captured, it contributes to climate change (28 times more effectively than CO2 on a per-mass basis). If the methane is captured, it can be used as a renewable energy resource. Lignocellulose comprises a significant portion …

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Sewer systems are a principal element of infrastructure in modern cities, accounting for massive amounts of public investments made over many decades and can be considered as an asset of the nation. Many concrete manholes in the sewer system are deteriorating due to the attack of sulfuric acid produced by microorganisms in a process termed as Microbial Induced Concrete Corrosion (MICC). The life span of concrete sewer elements significantly reduces from 100 years to 30–50 years, in extreme cases even down to 10 years. The primary aim of this study is to enhance the understanding of the correlation between gas-phase …

Analysis Of Hydrodynamic And Bathymetric Gradients In Canaveral National Seashore Following Living Shoreline And Oyster Restorations, David Spiering
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Coastal vulnerability has been gaining recognition as a critical issue, especially with the increasing predictions of sea level rise. Susceptibility to extreme events, eutrophication, and shoreline modification has left many coastal regions in a degraded state. Shoreline protection has traditionally taken the form of seawalls and offshore breakwaters which can be detrimental to both the local ecosystems and adjoining shorelines. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the hydrodynamic and bathymetric variation that occurs within Mosquito Lagoon, Florida following living shoreline and oyster reef restorations. The shoreline sites were sampled using a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) design and data were analyzed …

Long Term Performance Monitoring Of Shallow Slope Stabilization Utilizing Recycled Plastic Pins, Cory Alan Rauss
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Shallow slope failures are prevalent within the North Texas region. As highway slopes are underlain with high plastic clayey soils that experience cyclic shrinking and swelling, the soils shear strength generally decreases as the soil softens, making the soil more susceptible to sloughing and landslides. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) generally executes a rapid repair method as an economical option for repairing the slope. This method includes the failed soil removal, replacement, and recompaction to rectify the slope surface. While economical initially, this rapid repair technique may potentially prove to be costly with repeated repairs as the method does …

Development Of A Mechanical Device For Measuring Connection Rotations During Seismic Loading, Garrett Tatum
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
This engineering design project sought to design a cheap and easy-to-use sensor to monitor seismic connection rotations in steel buildings during earthquakes by using a linear ratchet mechanism. The idea for the project goes against the mainstream of research that is seeking to develop complex digital networks for monitoring structures in earthquake regions. Whereas many modern sensor networks require high-cost, professionally maintained digital networks, an analog sensor could provide much of the same information at a fraction of the cost, allowing sensors to be more widely utilized, particularly in developing countries. This project required an iterative engineering design process to …
