Mechanisms Controlling Copper Transport In Natural Soils, Julie A. Luisi
Mechanisms Controlling Copper Transport In Natural Soils, Julie A. Luisi
Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports
Biosolids are used as amendments to agricultural soils and can be a source of trace metals. It is unknown if these land-applied trace metals travel through the soil column to the water table. This study aims to determine the transport behavior of copper in natural soils, including 'aged' soils, commercial agricultural soils that have had multiple years of biosolids applications. Using acid digests and Darcy column apparatus it was determined that factors such as pH, soil composition, especially organic matter content, and the presence of other trace metals influence copper’s complex transport behavior in these soils. Natural soil appears to …
Evaluation, Improvement, And Application Of Models Of Environmental Fate And Transport Of Atmosphere-Surface Exchangeable Pollutants (Aseps), Tanvir Khan
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Certain toxic, semivolatile chemicals, also known as atmosphere-surface exchangeable pollutants (ASEPs) are emitted into the environment from anthropogenic activities and natural sources. This dissertation focused on the (i) evaluation and improvement of dry particle deposition and atmosphere-surface exchange parameterizations of ASEPs for use in chemical transport models (CTMs), and (ii) application of a dynamic multimedia model to examine recovery of Lake Superior from historical inputs of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds (a class of ASEPs) contamination.
Current knowledge has been inadequate to propose quantitative measures of the relative performance of available dry particle deposition parameterizations. In Chapter 1 of this dissertation, …
Modeling Canopy Effect In The Great Lakes Cladophora Model, Ankita Bakshi
Modeling Canopy Effect In The Great Lakes Cladophora Model, Ankita Bakshi
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Cladophora glomerata is a filamentous green alga native to the Great Lakes. However, its nuisance growth in phosphorus rich waters negatively affects the lakes’ aesthetic and water quality. The Great Lakes Cladophora Model (GLCM) v1, developed in 1982, was the first mechanistic model to simulate Cladophora growth basing phosphorus availability and environmental conditions followed by Cladophora Growth Model and GLCM v2. In this study, the light and temperature mediation factors for Cladophora net growth are revised as a necessary step prior to the development of a self-shading algorithm. The concept of a fixed-value, maximum achievable biomass (carrying capacity) employed in …

Predicting The Organic Compound Degradation In Aqueous-Phase Ultraviolet (Uv) And Uv-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes, Erica Coscarelli
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Clean safe drinking water is vital for society. With increasing water scarcity and the increased numbers of chemicals identified in waterways, it is important for us to fully understand how to destroy contaminants of concern and prevent potentially hazardous byproducts that may be produced from the degradation processes. Little is known about how nitrogen containing organics behave and degrade in current water treatment systems and therefore their role in water reuse. N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), is carcinogenic and is being formed during conventional chlorination of drinking water. Ultraviolet (UV) photooxidation has been shown to degrade NDMA, but the degradation pathways and their …

Optimizing Chlorine Disinfection By Chlorine Injection Location And Pipe Diameter Selection In A Water Distribution System, Margaret Neff
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Due to a variety of factors chlorination is common water disinfectant for community-scale distribution systems. The town of Suyo, Peru was already equipped with a gravity fed water system and drip chlorinator which achieved 4-log inactivation of viruses throughout the town, however, it was not providing 3-log inactivation of giardia cysts at all points of the system.
This project used an EPANET model to determine and compare the potential benefits of changes which could be made to the pre-existing water system in Suyo.
The model was used to compare current operating conditions of the Suyo system, 1.5 mg/L chlorine addition …

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs): A Legacy Of Contamination In Michigan's Rivers, Emily Shaw
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous contaminants worldwide and are the most frequent contaminant at US and bi-national Great Lakes areas of concern (AOCs). This study evaluated existing evidence to answer the questions: how does total PCB contamination compare between fish species, are there spatial patterns in PCB contamination in fish species, and have our remediation efforts been effective? Using multi-variate statistics (e.g. analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis (PCA), and multiple linear regression (MLR)), this research evaluated Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) fish contaminant monitoring data to attempt to answer the questions above.
PCB concentrations between the species …

Wildfire Emissions In The Context Of Global Change And The Implications For Mercury Pollution, Aditya Kumar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Wildfires are episodic disturbances that exert a significant influence on the Earth system. They emit substantial amounts of atmospheric pollutants, which can impact atmospheric chemistry/composition and the Earth’s climate at the global and regional scales. This work presents a collection of studies aimed at better estimating wildfire emissions of atmospheric pollutants, quantifying their impacts on remote ecosystems and determining the implications of 2000s-2050s global environmental change (land use/land cover, climate) for wildfire emissions following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A1B socioeconomic scenario.
A global fire emissions model is developed to compile global wildfire emission inventories for major atmospheric …
Understanding Large-Scale Natural Mine Water-Geologic Formation Systems For Geothermal Applications, Ting Bao
Understanding Large-Scale Natural Mine Water-Geologic Formation Systems For Geothermal Applications, Ting Bao
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Geothermal energy recovery from flooded mines has been gaining momentum worldwide. Numerous mines are flooded after their closure, either naturally or artificially, in which the water in the mines can be heated by the surrounding geologic formations due to geothermal gradients, leading to sizeable man-made reservoirs of warm water. Such mine water, therefore, can be treated as a renewable geothermal resource for heating/cooling buildings, which has the potential to benefit over millions of people in the United States and much more around the world. Though some real projects and/or installations launched worldwide for the use of flooded mines for geothermal …
Two Pumps, One Volcano: An Epanet Feasbility Study Of Connecting Two Groundwater Pumps In Rural Coastal Communities In West Ambae, Vanuatu, Helen Amiri
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In situations where groundwater supply shows vulnerability, improving water distribution network resiliency can be desirable. To do so, one water source can be linked with another to provide a redundant source.
On the South Pacific island of Ambae, the water demands of its residents routinely exceeded supply. Residents had traditionally used rainwater collection as their sole water supply source. In 2017, groundwater drilling operations created an alternative water supply at two community institutions, Ndui Ndui Health Center and Londua Junior Secondary School. One borehole went dry during pump testing; the feasibility of linking these two boreholes is investigated herein.

Hydrothermal Carbonization Of Food Waste For Nutrient Recovery And Reuse, Ifeolu M. Idowu
Hydrothermal Carbonization Of Food Waste For Nutrient Recovery And Reuse, Ifeolu M. Idowu
Theses and Dissertations
Food waste represents a rather large and currently underutilized source of potentially available and reusable nutrients. Laboratory-scale experiments evaluating the hydrothermal carbonization of food wastes collected from restaurants were conducted to understand how changes in feedstock composition and carbonization process conditions influence primary and secondary nutrient fate. Results from this work indicate that at all evaluated reaction times and temperatures, the majority of nitrogen, calcium, and magnesium remain integrated within the solid-phase, while the majority of potassium and sodium reside in the liquid-phase. The fate of phosphorus is dependent on reaction times and temperatures, with solid-phase integration increasing with higher …

Understanding Geopolymerization Process For Enhancement Of Mechanical Properties Of Fly Ash Based-Geopolymer Concrete, Lateef Najeh Assi
Theses and Dissertations
Concrete is a major construction material that is largely made up of cement. Unfortunately, the manufacturing process for the cement currently used to produce concrete releases a great deal of CO2, which endangers the environment. Hence, finding alternatives to ordinary Portland cement is of extreme importance. The intellectual contribution of this dissertation is the development of an improved understanding of the geopolymerization process so that the compressive strength of cement can be maximized while the need for external heating is minimized. The intent is to create a substance to replace commonly used cement without sacrificing other beneficial properties. The first …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
With growing global concerns related to energy security and sustainability, interest in bio-fuels has increased significantly. Production of biofuel mostly begins with pyrolysis, a process that converts the biomass to liquid biooil, solid biochar and gases. A large amount of carbonaceous biochar is generated as a by-product during the pyrolysis. However, no major effort has been made in the past decade to utilize the biochar in pavement applications, especially as a bio-modifier to asphalt binders. In this study, an attempt was made to evaluate the carbonaceous biochar, obtained during bio-fuel production through pyrolysis of Mesua ferrea seed cover waste, as …
Stability Analysis And Design Charts For A Sandy Soil Slope Supporting An Embedded Strip Footing, Emmanuel Baah-Frempong, Sanjay Kumar Shukla
Stability Analysis And Design Charts For A Sandy Soil Slope Supporting An Embedded Strip Footing, Emmanuel Baah-Frempong, Sanjay Kumar Shukla
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In several field situations, especially in the hilly terrains, the construction of footings on slopes becomes essential. The factor of safety of a slope supporting a loaded footing on the crest is dependent on the position of the footing from the crest edge. Most studies in the past have focused on analysing the bearing capacity and settlement behaviour of a footing resting on a slope crest, but foundations in most infrastructure projects are usually built at some depth below the ground surface. Therefore, the availability of some form of design charts for determining the factor of safety of a slope …
The Transport Of Non-Spherical Particles In A Simulated Ocean Environment, Hannah Reed
The Transport Of Non-Spherical Particles In A Simulated Ocean Environment, Hannah Reed
REU Final Reports
Plastic particles contaminating the world’s oceans and accumulating in oceanic gyres has become a ubiquitous problem and the solution involving how to clean up the debris efficiently has still not been found. One particular issue is understanding where the greatest densities of debris may be. It is known that floating trash will tend to accumulate in large circular systems of ocean water called gyres, however these areas span thousands of miles of ocean. The present study aims to understand the transport of anisotropic particles in conditions similar to an oceanic environment using experimental methods in an effort to better predict …

Day Laborers & Extreme Heat: Recommendations For Reducing Heat Stress, Sandra Mena
REU Final Reports
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has various Global Climate Models (GCM). One of them, models three greenhouse gases. The increasing amount of greenhouse gases are just a fraction of factors that fuel global climate change. According to the IPCC 2014, climate related extremes such as heatwaves are likely to occur more regularly and are likely to increase in duration. Since 1979, there has been over 9000 deaths that occurred from heat-related incidents in the United States (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2016). Which brings attention to population groups who are exposed to hot temperatures on a frequent basis due …

Effects Of Land Development And Season On Heavy Metal Concentrations In Urban Streams, Helen Daigle
Effects Of Land Development And Season On Heavy Metal Concentrations In Urban Streams, Helen Daigle
REU Final Reports
Although it is generally understood that urban development can impact the quality of urban streams, there are many factors that affect the concentrations of pollutants being transferred from the built environment to a given output. This study examines the impact of land use surrounding urban streams, specifically, the degree of development and presence or absence of green infrastructure (GI) in these areas on heavy metal (HM) concentrations in Portland, Oregon. After collecting 1021 water quality samples from 2010-2018, we examined the difference in concentrations of HM pollutants across different combinations of land use and season. Increased levels of calcium, magnesium, …
Liner Characterisation And Leak Detection Using Electrical Resistivity Techniques, Lopa M S Pandey
Liner Characterisation And Leak Detection Using Electrical Resistivity Techniques, Lopa M S Pandey
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The resistivity of soil ranges from 7-15 Ωm for Leachate #1 to 20-50 Ωm for Leachate #2. The resistivity decreases with an increase in the proximity to the leak point. Furthermore, the resistivity values obtained with water were nearly 10 times the values observed with landfill leachate as the leaching liquid. Based on the resistivity profiles of soil as observed at different time intervals, the method is found to be effective in determining leakages in the liner.
The test results have also been presented for the leakage of Bayer liquor obtained from aluminium manufacturing company in Western Australia. The resistivity …

Leaching Of A Mongolian Chalcopyrite Concentrate, Nicholas J. Welham, Jadambaa Temuujin, Nader Setoudeh
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
A Mongolian chalcopyrite flotation concentrate was leached using sodium hypochlorite adjusted to different pH using hydrochloric acid. It was found that using a starting pH of below 5.0 resulted in more efficient leaching. The extent of chalcopyrite leaching was determined by the concentration of sodium hypochlorite with > 40% dissolution being achieved. The residue after leaching was found to consist primarily of unreacted chalcopyrite which would be suitable for further leaching or smelting.

The Plaichumphol Irrigation Project is an irrigation area which depends on both irrigation water and groundwater for long time. Farmers in that area have their cultivation almost whole year. Therefore groundwater supply is a major alternative source especially in dry periods. The aims of this study are to understand the interactions and parameters of land and river recharge, to analyse the surface water and the surface water and groundwater interaction mechanism via development of local groundwater model.
For this purpose, groundwater flow model (GMS) was used to develop regional and local groundwater models. The model was calibrated from 1993-1997 and …
Cellulose And Sulfate Degradation In A Biochemical Reactor During Treatment Of Mine Drainage, Sweta Ojha
Cellulose And Sulfate Degradation In A Biochemical Reactor During Treatment Of Mine Drainage, Sweta Ojha
Masters Theses
"Seventy-two biochemical reactors were set up, and operated using a mixture of chip-bark, horse manure, and gravel as the biochemical treatment substrate. The simulated mine water containing sulfate (1000 mg/l) was pumped into each reactor at a flow rate of 0.5 ml/minute (approximate), giving an empty bed contact time of 8 days. The main idea is that the microorganisms present in horse manure would convert the cellulose in chip-bark into volatile fatty acids. The produced volatile fatty acid would enhance the metabolism of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) initially present in horse manure, which would degrade (and eventually remove) the sulfate from …

Field Implementation Of Cement-Based Composite Strengthening Technologies, Michael Andrew Janke
Field Implementation Of Cement-Based Composite Strengthening Technologies, Michael Andrew Janke
Masters Theses
"With infrastructure continuing to age, technologies are being developed to strengthen structures as a more sustainable option than replacement. The use of fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) strengthening systems is a promising new technology for adding flexural and shear capacity to existing reinforced concrete members. While cement based systems with carbon, PBO, and steel have all been implemented in a lab setting, there is not research data available for installation in the field. FRCM composites have advantages over more widely used fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites such as heat resistance and compatibility with concrete substrate. FRP systems have previously been field …
Imaging The Subsurface In Eastern Part Of Lake Chesterfield Using A Combination Of Geophysical Tools, Jiawei Li
Imaging The Subsurface In Eastern Part Of Lake Chesterfield Using A Combination Of Geophysical Tools, Jiawei Li
Masters Theses
"The Lake Chesterfield North Dam in Wildwood city, Missouri has been leaking, more or less continuously since the dam was constructed in 1986 despite mitigation efforts in 1988, 1994, 1995, 2004, and 2005. Neither the grouting efforts in 1988, 1994, 1995, 2004 or 2005, nor the placement and rehabilitation of an impervious clay liner in 2005 has solved the problem. Indeed, in June of 2017, the water level in Lake Chesterfield dropped at an alarmingly rapid rate.
Prior to authorizing additional mitigation work, the Lake Chesterfield Home Owners Association (LCHOA) decided to acquire geophysical data across the dry lake bed. …
Enhancing Frp-To-Concrete Bond Behavior By Epoxy Ribs, Cheng Jiang, Baolin Wan, John Omboko
Enhancing Frp-To-Concrete Bond Behavior By Epoxy Ribs, Cheng Jiang, Baolin Wan, John Omboko
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The bond between external bonding (EB) of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials to concrete is the weakest link in the strengthened concrete flexural members. There are three mechanisms to transfer the interfacial shear between FRP and the concrete substrate, i.e., adhesion, interlocking and friction. This paper proposes a new approach by grooving on the concrete surface before applying epoxy to make epoxy ribs to increase interlocking. An experimental program was conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed epoxy ribs. Six grooves perpendicular to the fiber direction were cut on the bonding surface of the concrete blocks. The grooves …
