Extraction Of Phase-Resolved Wave Data From X-Band Radar Imagery, Alexandra Simpson Jan 2018

Extraction Of Phase-Resolved Wave Data From X-Band Radar Imagery, Alexandra Simpson

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Typically, phase-resolved measurements of the sea surface are limited to single-point time series from in situ sensors, or arrays of multiple in situ sensors. The deployment of such devices is costly and time intensive, and the wave data they provide is limited in its spatial coverage and directional accuracy. Several remote sensing options, including optical video and X-Band marine radars, offer the possibility of full 2D reconstruction of the phase-resolved directional sea on spatial scales of kilometers. Ocean waves are visible in radar imagery as the ubiquitous backscatter from short wind ripples is modulated by the longer gravity waves. However, …

Evaluation Of Elastic Modulus Of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete, Nakin Suksawang, Salam Wtaife, Ahmed Alsabbagh Jan 2018

Evaluation Of Elastic Modulus Of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete, Nakin Suksawang, Salam Wtaife, Ahmed Alsabbagh

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper determines the effect of discrete fibers on the elastic modulus of concrete and cement composites. Five types of discrete fibers consisting of steel, polypropylene, macro-polyolefin, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and basalt fibers were investigated. Results show that discrete fibers had little effect on elastic modulus for fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) with coarse-to-fine aggregate ratio (C/S) greater than 1. However, for FRC with C/S smaller than 1 and fiber-reinforced cement composites (FRCCs), discrete fibers reduced the elastic modulus. Accordingly, a new elastic modulus equation is proposed to better estimate the elastic modulus of FRC with a maximum fiber volume fraction of …

Assessing The Feasibility Of Soil Infiltration Trenches For Highway Runoff Control On The Island Of Oahu, Hawaii, Martina Sobotkova, Jaromir Dusek, Ghasem Alavi, Laxman Sharma, Chittaranjan Ray

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

The coastal waters of Hawaii are extremely important for recreation as well as for the health of the marine environment. Non-point source pollution from storm runoff poses a great threat to surface water quality in Hawaii. The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) includes infiltration trenches as a best management practice (BMP) option to reduce pollution caused by stormwater runoff. HDOT guidelines state that the implementation of BMPs is needed to reduce sediment and pollutant loads to streams and the ocean. In this study, the suitability of soils adjacent to highways on Oahu for the siting of infiltration trenches …

Behavior Of Eb Frp Masonry Bond Under Service Temperature, Zuhair Al-Aljaberi, John J. Myers, K. Chandrashekhara

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The interest in advanced composites in repairing and strengthening infrastructure systems has considerably increased, especially as the application externally bonded (EB) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has become more well established. Previous research on bond behavior has focused on impact of durability by considering exposure to harsh environmental conditions and testing the specimens after exposure, rather than testing bond performance during exposure. The influence of directly applying temperature on bond behavior represents an open topic that needs to be investigated in more detail. This study is one of the first studies to investigate the bond behavior when the composite is subjected …

Additive Manufacturing With High Density Polyethylene: Mechanical Properties Evaluation, Calvin Wampol Jan 2018

Additive Manufacturing With High Density Polyethylene: Mechanical Properties Evaluation, Calvin Wampol

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High-density polyethylene is a common recyclable plastic that has a large potential as an additive manufacturing material due its economic and environmental benefits. However, high-density polyethylene has undesirable thermal properties that cause the material to shirk and not adhere to the printing bed during an additive manufacturing processes. Researchers have attempted to combat these thermal properties but have only created novel filaments of high-density polyethylene without being able to create 3D printed specimens for mechanical property testing. This paper presents several methods to create 3D printed specimens with pure high-density polyethylene filament on a fused filament fabrication type 3D printer. …

Analysis Of 3d Printed Cylindrical Members, Salvador Caballero Jan 2018

Analysis Of 3d Printed Cylindrical Members, Salvador Caballero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Compressive analysis of a structural member is the determination of the axial capacity of the member when it is undergoing a load causing the member to fail in either a buckling or a crushing mode. 3D printed plastic columns have not been characterized and analyzed yet. However, this research characterizes 3D-printed PLA columns and provides parameters for future researchers to investigate. The literature describes the different industries that utilize 3D-printing. In this research, we introduce an innovative approach to investigate the stresses produced in a 3D printed composite member, made of PLA and locally available soil. The compressive testing will …

Mechanical Bar Splices For Accelerated Construction Of Bridge Columns, Puskar Kumar Dahal Jan 2018

Mechanical Bar Splices For Accelerated Construction Of Bridge Columns, Puskar Kumar Dahal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical bar splicing is an alternative method of connecting reinforcing bars in concrete structures compared to conventional lap splicing mainly to reduce bar congestion in joints. Recently, mechanical bar splices, which are also referred to as bar couplers, have been used to connect precast members to accelerate construction of concrete bridges and buildings. Current codes prohibit the use of couplers in the plastic hinge regions of bridge columns in high seismic zones. This may be because of a lack of systematic test data on the coupler performance, limited experimental studies on mechanically spliced bridge columns, and an engineering precaution. The …

Service Response And Evaluation Of Prestressed Concrete Bridges Through Load Testing, Eli Saul Hernandez Ramos Jan 2018

Service Response And Evaluation Of Prestressed Concrete Bridges Through Load Testing, Eli Saul Hernandez Ramos

Doctoral Dissertations

"During the last two decades, self-consolidating concrete (SCC) has emerged as an alternative to produce structures with longer life expectancy. Despite the advantages that come with using SCC, there are some concerns related to its structural and serviceability response. The effect of the larger paste content and smaller coarse aggregate size is of particular interest because this combination may inhibit the development of the SCC's target mechanical properties. Field tests are an effective method to monitor the service response of infrastructure. In addition, field tests have largely confirmed reserves of strength capacity in existing bridges despite their visual condition and …

Guayule Plant Extracts As Binder Modifiers In Flexible (Asphalt) Pavement Mixtures, Steven Michael Lusher Jan 2018

Guayule Plant Extracts As Binder Modifiers In Flexible (Asphalt) Pavement Mixtures, Steven Michael Lusher

Doctoral Dissertations

"The guayule (pronounced, 'why-YOO-lee') plant is a woody perennial shrub that is native to areas of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, and is a well-documented source of high-quality natural rubber. The U.S. needs a domestic source of natural rubber to allay concerns about its future availability. Cultivation of guayule in North America has been attempted many times since the late 19th century, and companies, including major tire manufacturers, are again investing in guayule research. However, full-scale commercialization of guayule rubber needs established markets for the two basic by-products of guayule rubber extraction: the plant resins (primarily non-rubber compounds) …

"Robustness, which is defined as the capacity of a mixture to tolerate small variations in constituent elements, mixing parameters or temperature that are inevitable with production at any significant scale, is a key property to expand the practical implementation of self-consolidating concrete (SCC). At the first step, the effect of different amount of water, amount of superplastizer, mixing time, mixing speed and the addition time of superplastizer on the rheological properties of cement pastes with SCC consistency, has been evaluated. Two different SCC mix design concepts, the powder-type and VMA-type were selected for this research. The results show that the …

Adaptive Data Analysis For Damage Detection And System Identification In Civil Infrastructure, Hongya Qu Jan 2018

Adaptive Data Analysis For Damage Detection And System Identification In Civil Infrastructure, Hongya Qu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Time-varying structural systems are often encountered in civil engineering. As extreme events occur more frequently and severely in recent years, more structures are loaded beyond their elastic conditions and may thus experience damage in the years to come. Even if structures remain elastic, energy dissipation devices installed on structures often reveal hysteretic behaviors under earthquake loads. Therefore, it is imperative to develop and implement novel technologies that enable the identification and damage detection of time-varying systems. In this dissertation, adaptive wavelet transform (AWT) and multiple analytical mode decomposition (M-AMD) are proposed and applied to identify system properties and detect damage …

Effects Of Subsurface Drainage Systems On Water And Nitrogen Footprints Simulated With Rzwqm2, Kristina J. Craft, Matthew J. Helmers, Robert W. Malone, Carl H. Pederson, Linda R. Schott

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Developing drainage water management (DWM) systems in the Midwest to reduce nitrogen (N) transport to the northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone requires understanding of the long-term performance of these systems. Few studies have evaluated long-term impacts of DWM, and the simulation of controlled drainage (CD) with the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) is limited, while shallow drainage (SD) has not been examined. We tested RZWQM using nine years (2007-2015) of field data from southeast Iowa for CD, SD, conventional drainage (DD), and undrained (ND) systems and simulated the long-term (1971-2015) impacts. RZWQM accurately simulated N loss in subsurface …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Defining the final size and geometry of engineered tissues through precise control of the scalar and vector components of tissue growth is a necessary benchmark for regenerative medicine, but it has proved to be a significant challenge for tissue engineers. The growth plate cartilage that promotes elongation of the long bones is a good model system for studying morphogenetic mechanisms because cartilage is composed of a single cell type, the chondrocyte; chondrocytes are readily maintained in culture; and growth trajectory is predominately in a single vector. In this cartilage, growth is generated via a differentiation program that is spatially and …

Developing An Automated System For Supporting Strut Arrangement In Deep Excavation, Pisal Nov

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In strut arrangement, current software could detect the constructible problems like clashes. However, this software had some limitations including (1) unable to visualize all clash occurrences on each strut, (2) unable to distinguish between occurrence and non-occurrence of the clash, and (3) unable to check tolerance and spacing problems. Thus, the strut arrangement was still an inefficient process. The research objective was to develop an automated system for supporting strut arrangement in deep excavation. In the methodology, an in-depth interview was conducted to collect the information and knowledge of strut arrangement and analyzed with transcription analysis. This information and knowledge …

High Recovery Inland Desalination: A Technical And Economic Performance Evaluation Of Zero Discharge Desalination And Other Technologies, Malynda Aragon Cappelle

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Increasing population and diminishing freshwater resources are leading to increased competition between users of freshwater, both in terms of surface water and groundwater. Desalination can augment the water supply, but conventional approaches like reverse osmosis are usually limited to 70-80% recovery. Inland brine disposal options are often limited, presenting significant technical and economic obstacles to implementing desalination technology. In comparison to conventional desalination technologies, high recovery desalination methods such as Zero Discharge Desalination (ZDD) offer substantially higher potable water yield (i.e., 95-98%) from brackish water. ZDD is a hybrid process that combines reverse osmosis (RO) or nanofiltration (NF) with electrodialysis …
