Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and biomethane when blended as a transport fuel (bio-CNG) have significant potential in Europe. However, this alternative fuel has not been developed in several European countries. One of the barriers to market penetration is the absence of a coherent regulatory framework to eliminate the disparity between European and national legislation. Using Ireland as a test case, this paper examines how conflicting policies can be aligned to ensure effective bio-CNG market development. A key barrier is the regulatory ambiguity placed on transport fuel suppliers and investors who wish to connect to the network to supply bio-CNG. For …

Laboratory Exercise – Calculating Runoff Over Land Parcels, Wade Bozeman, Steven Evans, Ryan Selee
Engineering Applications of GIS - Laboratory Exercises
When developing land, most municipalities will require that all runoff from the site be retained on site or flow into a storm water conveyance system. In the near future, new regulation will require that all runoff be retained on site. For this reason, it is important to know how much runoff can be expected to flow over a potential development site. In this lab, you will use ArcMap ModelBuilder to predict the amount of flow which can be expected over a land parcel in a storm event.

Numerical Analysis Of Heat-Curved I-Girders, Antoine Gergess, Rajan Sen
Numerical Analysis Of Heat-Curved I-Girders, Antoine Gergess, Rajan Sen
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Heat curving is a practical and economical process used by steel fabricators for curving structural steel. In this method, the flange edges of a fabricated straight girder are asymmetrically heated to induce residual curvature on cooling. Available analytical methods for predicting the resulting residual stress, strain and curvature are complex and iterative because of the need to account for material and geometric non-linearity. This paper presents a single-step, non-iterative, numerical procedure for determining the effects of heat-curving on residual stress and strain based on a previously developed simplified analysis. Thermal equilibrium equations for idealized heating profiles are first recast in …

Air Transport Versus High-Speed Rail: An Overview And Research Agenda, Xiaoqian Sun, Yu Zhang, Sebastian Wandelt
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The development of high-speed rail (HSR) services throughout the last decades has gradually blurred the concept of competition and cooperation with air transportation. There is a wide range of studies on this subject, with a particular focus on single lines or smaller regions. This article synthesizes and discusses recently published studies in this area, while aiming to identify commonalities and deviations among different regions throughout the world, covering services from Europe, Asia, and North America. Our meta-analysis reveals that the literature is highly controversial and the results vary substantially from one region to another, and a generalization is difficult, given …

Finding P-Hub Median Locations: An Empirical Study On Problems And Solution Techniques, Xiaoqian Sun, Weibin Dai, Yu Zhang, Sebastian Wandelt
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Hub location problems have been studied by many researchers for almost 30 years, and, accordingly, various solution methods have been proposed. In this paper, we implement and evaluate several widely used methods for solving five standard hub location problems. To assess the scalability and solution qualities of these methods, three well-known datasets are used as case studies: Turkish Postal System, Australia Post, and Civil Aeronautics Board. Classical problems in small networks can be solved efficiently using CPLEX because of their low complexity. Genetic algorithms perform well for solving three types of single allocation problems, since the problem formulations can be …

Shifted Plastic Hinge Column Connections Using Grouted Sleeves For Accelerated Bridge Construction, Haider Al-Jelawy
Shifted Plastic Hinge Column Connections Using Grouted Sleeves For Accelerated Bridge Construction, Haider Al-Jelawy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Accelerated bridge construction (ABC) is being increasingly used in new bridge construction and repair. ABC typically requires prefabricated elements joined with mechanical couplers. Grouted sleeves (GSs) offer good construction tolerances and load transfer between precast elements. However, previous research identified some performance issues with precast columns employing GS connections for seismic regions. Therefore, there is a need to develop improved connection details. This research consists of three components; testing of six large-scale precast reinforced concrete column models, a series of individual component tests on GS bar splices, and analytical studies. Large-scale, precast column models were designed and experimentally tested using …

Procedural Historic Building Information Modelling (Hbim) For Recording And Documenting European Classical Architecture, Conor Dore
Doctoral
Procedural Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) is a new approach for modelling historic buildings which develops full building information models from remotely sensed data. HBIM consists of a novel library of reusable parametric objects, based on historic architectural data and a system for mapping these library objects to survey data. Using concepts from procedural modelling, a new set of rules and algorithms have been developed to automatically combine HBIM library objects and generate different building arrangements by altering parameters. This is a semi-automatic process where the required building structure and objects are first automatically generated and then refined to match …
Wrong-Way Driving: A Regional Approach To A Regional Problem, Md. Omar Faruk
Wrong-Way Driving: A Regional Approach To A Regional Problem, Md. Omar Faruk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wrong-way driving (WWD) has been problematic on United States highways for decades despite its rare occurrence. Since WWD crashes are rare, recent researchers have studied WWD non-crash events such as WWD 911 calls and WWD citations to understand the overall nature and trend of WWD. This paper demonstrates the regional nature of the WWD problem and proposes regional transportation systems management and operations (Regional TSM&O) solutions to combat this problem. Specifically, it was found that 11% of all WWD multi-data events (e.g., multiple 911 calls for the same WWD event) traveled from one county to another. Additionally, 30% of all …

Assessing Interactions Between Estuary Water Quality And Terrestrial Land Cover In Hurricane Events With Multi-Sensor Remote Sensing, Chandan Mostafiz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Estuaries are environmentally, ecologically and environmentally important places as they act as a meeting place for land, freshwater and marine ecosystems. They are also called nurseries of the sea as they often provide nesting and feeding habitats for many aquatic plants and animals. These estuaries also withstand the worst of some natural disasters, especially hurricanes. The estuaries as well as the harbored ecosystems undergo significant changes in terms of water quality, vegetation cover etc. and these components are interrelated. When hurricane makes landfall it is necessary to assess the damages as quickly as possible as restoration and recovery processes are …

Development And Application Of Microelectrodes To Study In Situ Disinfectant Loss And Corrosion On Metal Surface, Xiangmeng Ma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this research was to develop, fabricate, evaluate and utilize microelectrodes to metal coupons in artificial water system. In the brass experiment, it presented profiles of direct measurements of free chlorine/monochloramine, oxygen and pH to brass and cement based coupons. In monochloraminated water, brass showed a much faster corrosion process under observation. Profiles showed a less monochloramine consumption with as high as 7% greater oxygen utilization comparing to the brass in free chlorine solution, reflecting oxygen could be a major part of the corrosion initiation process. While cement showed less reactive characteristics to disinfectants and oxygen compared …
Effect Of Load Path And Failure Modes On Seismic Response Of Regular Bridges., Haider Darwash
Effect Of Load Path And Failure Modes On Seismic Response Of Regular Bridges., Haider Darwash
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bridges are essential infrastructure constituents that have been studied for centuries. Typically, seismic bridge design and assessment utilize simplified modeling and analysis techniques based on one-dimensional spine elements and zero-length springs/hinges. The geometry of the elements and calibration of parameters are based on assumptions for the lateral load path and failure modes, e.g., sacrificial backwall and shear keys, neglecting wing walls, and strength based on backfill alone. These assumptions have led to observations of underestimated resistance, overestimated displacement demands, and unpredicted damage and failure mode. The focus of the study is on ordinary standard bridges with continuous reinforced concrete box …
An Analytical Investigation Of Prestressed Beam Bridge Performance Before And After Widening, Chris Oriordan Adjah
An Analytical Investigation Of Prestressed Beam Bridge Performance Before And After Widening, Chris Oriordan Adjah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As traffic and congestion increase, so does the likelihood of collisions. The solution to this problem is usually through a rehabilitation process with two primary options: (1) widening/expansion of existing roadway and bridges and (2) complete replacement (new construction) of roadway and bridges. The first option is the most feasible and cost-effective. While roadway widening/expansion pose minimal issues, the same cannot be said of bridge widening. An existing bridge presents a multitude of challenges during the planning and design phases, during construction, and throughout the structure's service life. Special attention is required in both the design and detailing of the …

This paper, based on a participatory methodological framework involving expert stakeholders and researchers from six European countries (Germany, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Sweden and UK), analyses the priority issues for the development of short-rotation plantations (SRP), and proposes a series of policy strategies to strengthen this development. The results indicate that there is a lack of awareness of the multifaceted benefits of SRP at the level of farmers, policy makers and public authorities. More research is required to put a value on the multifunctionality of SRP and justify its public support. Small-scale projects using established technologies are also required with energy …

This paper presents construction students’ perceptions of tested simulations with regards to the features, knowledge gained, level …
Evaluation Of Milwaukee B And Synchronized As New Service Interchange Designs, Amirarsalan Mehrara Molan
Evaluation Of Milwaukee B And Synchronized As New Service Interchange Designs, Amirarsalan Mehrara Molan
Wayne State University Dissertations
These days, alternative interchanges are attracting the attention of transportation
agencies and designers more than ever. Most of the existing interchanges in the U.S
were built in the 1950s and 1960s when traffic volume was much lower, and the type of
vehicles and driving habits were completely different. Moreover, the knowledge of
highway design and safety is more developed now, and this provides an appropriate
situation to increase the efficiency of interchanges regarding traffic operation and safety
using alternative interchanges.
This research evaluated the performance of two proposed service interchange
designs—the synchronized design which is related to a superstreet intersection …

Fate And Impacts Of Priority Pollutant Metals In Coal Fly Ash–Soil–Switchgrass Plant Mesocosms, Olushola M. Awoyemi, E. Kudjo Dzantor
Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive
Coal fly ash (CFA) is a coal combustion by-product containing heavy metals (HMs) that can enter and accumulate in environmental matrices. The current study assessed the fate and effects of HMs contained in CFA on Armour silt loam (ASL) soil, switchgrass plant, and leachate. Soil impact indices compared levels of HMs in the CFA-soil admixtures to control soil (without CFA). These indices include contamination factor (*C*~f~), modified degree of contamination (m*C*~d~), and pollution load index (PLI). The ratio of the levels of HMs in switchgrass root and shoot tissues to their levels in the CFA-soil admixtures were used to determine …
Sediment Transport Modelling Using Dynamic (Dis)Connectivity Prediction For A Bedrock Controlled Catchment, David Tyler Mahoney
Sediment Transport Modelling Using Dynamic (Dis)Connectivity Prediction For A Bedrock Controlled Catchment, David Tyler Mahoney
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
The (dis)connectivity of sediment, defined as the detachment and transport of sediment from source to sink between geomorphic zones, is a major control on sediment transport rates but has seldom taken precedence in sediment transport models that focus on assessment of sediment impacts on water supply. A watershed-scale sediment transport model was formulated that incorporates sediment (dis)connectivity knowledge and subroutines and predicts sediment flux through coupling with an excessive shear stress erosion equation. The intersecting probabilities of sediment supply, detachment, transport, and (dis)connectivity produce the probability of sediment connectivity for a watershed or region of a watershed. The integration of …

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
The major transit systems operating in San Francisco are San Francisco Municipal (MUNI), Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), and Caltrain. The system of interest for this paper is MUNI, in particular the bus and light rail systems. During the past decade transit ridership in the area has experienced diverging growth, with bus ridership declining while rail ridership is growing significantly (Erhardt et al. 2017). Our data show that between 2009 and 2016, MUNI rail ridership increases from 146,000 to 171,400, while MUNI bus ridership decreases from 520,000 to 450,000. Direct ridership models (DRMs) are used to determine what factors are …
Prediction Of Protected-Permissive Left-Turn Phasing Crashes Based On Conflict Analysis, Shraddha Sagar
Prediction Of Protected-Permissive Left-Turn Phasing Crashes Based On Conflict Analysis, Shraddha Sagar
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Left-turning maneuvers are considered to be the highest risk movements at intersections and two-thirds of the crashes associated with left-turns are reported at signalized intersections. Left-turning vehicles typically encounter conflicts from opposing through traffic. To separate conflicting movements, transportation agencies use a protected-only phase at signalized intersections where each movement is allowed to move alone. However, this could create delays and thus the concept of a protected-permissive phase has been introduced to balance safety and delays. However, the permissive part of this phasing scheme retains the safety concerns and could increase the possibility of conflicts resulting in crashes. This research …

Self-Sensing Cementitious Materials, Alexander Nicholas Houk
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
The study of self-sensing cementitious materials is a constantly expanding topic of study in the materials and civil engineering fields and refers to the creation and utilization of cement-based materials (including cement paste, cement mortar, and concrete) that are capable of sensing (i.e. measuring) stress and strain states without the use of embedded or attached sensors. With the inclusion of electrically conductive fillers, cementitious materials can become truly self-sensing. Previous researchers have provided only qualitative studies of self-sensing material stress-electrical response. The overall goal of this research was to modify and apply previously developed predictive models on cylinder compression test …

Diffuse radiation can increase canopy light use efficiency (LUE). This creates the need to differentiate the effects of direct and diffuse radiation when simulating terrestrial gross primary production (GPP). Here, we present a novel GPP model, the diffuse-fraction-based two-leaf model (DTEC), which includes the leaf response to direct and diffuse radiation, and treats maximum LUE for shaded leaves (εmsh defined as a power function of the diffuse fraction (Df)) and sunlit leaves (εmsu defined as a constant) separately. An Amazonian rainforest site (KM67) was used to calibrate the model by simulating the linear relationship between …
