Identification And Reduction Of Retracker-Related Noise In Altimeter-Derived Sea Surface Height Measurements, Edward D. Zaron, Robert Decarvalho Jan 2016

Identification And Reduction Of Retracker-Related Noise In Altimeter-Derived Sea Surface Height Measurements, Edward D. Zaron, Robert Decarvalho

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Data from the Jason-2 calibration/validation mission phase have been analyzed to identify the correlation between sea surface height (SSH) and significant wave height (SWH) errors.A cross-spectral analysis indicates that the SSH and SWH errors are nearly white and significantly correlated at scales from 12 to 100 km, consistent with the hypothesized error source, the waveform retracker. Because of the scale separation between the SWH signal and noise, it is possible to correct the SSH data by removing the SSH noise correlated with the SWH noise. Such a correction has been implemented using the empirical correlation found during the Jason-2 calibration …

The Effect Of Channel Deepening On Tides And Storm Surge: A Case Study Of Wilmington, Nc, R. Familkhalili, Stefan A. Talke Jan 2016

The Effect Of Channel Deepening On Tides And Storm Surge: A Case Study Of Wilmington, Nc, R. Familkhalili, Stefan A. Talke

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this study we investigate the hypothesis that increasing channel depth in estuaries can amplify both tides and storm surge by developing an idealized numerical model representing the 1888, 1975, and 2015 bathymetric conditions of the Cape Fear River Estuary, NC. Archival tide gauge data recovered from the U.S. National Archives indicates that mean tidal range in Wilmington has doubled to 1.55m since the 1880s, with a much smaller increase of 0.07mobserved near the ocean boundary. These tidal changes are reproduced by simulating channel depths of 7m (1888 condition) and 15.5m (modern condition). Similarly, model sensitivity studies using idealized, parametric …

Utilizing High Resolution Bus Gps Data To Visualize And Identify Congestion Hot-Spots In Urban, Nicholas B. Stoll, Travis B. Glick, Miguel Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Congestion and travel delay on urban roadways can influence the roadways’ operating costs and service attractiveness. This research used high-resolution bus data to examine sources of delay on urban arterials. A set of tools was created to help visualize trends in bus behavior and movement; these tools allowed larger traffic trends to be visualized along urban corridors and streets. With buses as probes and examining aggregated bus behavior, contoured speed plots were used to understand the behavior of roadways outside the zone of influence of bus stops. Speed plots were used to discover trends and travel patterns with only a …

M2 Internal Tides And Their Observed Wavenumber Spectra From Satellite Altimetry, Richard D. Ray, Edward D. Zaron Jan 2016

M2 Internal Tides And Their Observed Wavenumber Spectra From Satellite Altimetry, Richard D. Ray, Edward D. Zaron

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A near-global chart of surface elevations associated with the stationary M2 internal tide is empirically constructed from multimission satellite altimeter data. An advantage of a strictly empirical mapping approach is that results are independent of assumptions about ocean wave dynamics and, in fact, can be used to test such assumptions. A disadvantage is that present-day altimeter coverage is only marginally adequate to support mapping such short-wavelength features. Moreover, predominantly north–south ground-track orientations and contamination from nontidal oceanographic variability can lead to deficiencies in mapped tides. Independent data from Cryosphere Satellite-2 (CryoSat-2) and other altimeters are used to …

Feature Coverage Indexes For Dual Homography Estimation In Constructing Panorama Image, Kyungkoo Jun, Si Kim Jan 2016

Feature Coverage Indexes For Dual Homography Estimation In Constructing Panorama Image, Kyungkoo Jun, Si Kim

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Enlarged images can be obtained by various methods. Stitching is one of the efficient methods. It can produce panoramic images by stitching adjacent images which contain overlapping regions even though they are obtained through separate image sensors. Images that contain multiple different planes are hard to be stitched together because each plane has a different homography matrix for perspective warping. For this, a dual homography was proposed. However its performance varies depending on feature detectors which are used to find matching feature points between images. In this paper, we propose three feature coverage indexes which evaluate the stitching performance of …

Risks Involved In Using Alternative Project Delivery (Apd) Methods In Water And Wastewater Projects, Pramen Shrestha, J Batista, R Maharajan

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

There are risks involved in the design and construction of projects, and several studies have been conducted in identifying the risks involved in using traditional delivery method (Design Bid Build) in the design and construction of the projects. However, little research has been done in identifying the risks involved in using Alternative Project Delivery (APD) methods in the design and construction of water and wastewater projects. The identification of these risks could assist in improving project performance of future projects that use APD methods. A survey was conducted to identify the risks involved in using APD methods for the design …

Triclocarban Influences Antibiotic Resistance And Alters Anaerobic Digester Microbial Community Structure, Daniel Elliott Carey, Daniel Zitomer, Krassimira R. Hristova, Anthony D. Kappell, Patrick J. Mcnamara

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Triclocarban (TCC) is one of the most abundant organic micropollutants detected in biosolids. Lab-scale anaerobic digesters were amended with TCC at concentrations ranging from the background concentration of seed biosolids (30 mg/kg) to toxic concentrations of 850 mg/kg to determine the effect on methane production, relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes, and microbial community structure. Additionally, the TCC addition rate was varied to determine the impacts of acclimation time. At environmentally relevant TCC concentrations (max detect = 440 mg/kg), digesters maintained function. Digesters receiving 450 mg/kg of TCC maintained function under gradual TCC addition, but volatile fatty acid concentrations increased, …

Triclosan Adsorption Using Wastewater Biosolids-Derived Biochar, Yiran Tong, Brooke K. Mayer, Patrick J. Mcnamara Jan 2016

Triclosan Adsorption Using Wastewater Biosolids-Derived Biochar, Yiran Tong, Brooke K. Mayer, Patrick J. Mcnamara

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Organic micropollutants are ubiquitous in the environment and stem from municipal wastewater treatment plant discharges. Adsorption can be used as a tertiary treatment to complement the conventional activated sludge process to remove micropollutants prior to discharge. This research evaluated the performance of wastewater biosolids-derived biochar as an adsorbent to remove triclosan from water. Pre-conditioning of the biochar using hydrochloric acid (HCl) was an essential step for triclosan adsorption. Using acid-conditioned biochar, maximum adsorption of 872 μg triclosan per g biochar was achieved with biochar produced at 800 °C. Biochar produced at higher pyrolysis temperatures tended to have higher triclosan sorption …

Road Scholars For The Western States: Protecting Natural Areas By Improving Road Management Research, Brian Cooke, Charlie Luce, Tom Black, David G. Tarboton Jan 2016

Road Scholars For The Western States: Protecting Natural Areas By Improving Road Management Research, Brian Cooke, Charlie Luce, Tom Black, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A poorly placed or unsuitably designed road can result in landslides, flooding, gullies, stream damage, and wildlife habitat destruction. Particularly in natural areas, benefits of roads, such as accessibility and convenience, must be weighed against potential water quality degradation, scenic and wildlife habitat destruction, and hazardous driving conditions.

Scientists at the Rocky Mountain Research Station helped create two free tools—GRAIP (Geomorphic Road Analysis and Inventory Package) and GRAIP-Lite—to help land managers make better decisions about road management in environmentally sensitive areas. GRAIP helps land managers analyze and predict surface erosion, gully risk, landslide risk, stream crossing failure risks, and other …

Effect Of Fiber Orientation On Dynamic Compressive Properties Of An Ultra-High Performance Concrete, Andrew B. Groeneveld Jan 2016

Effect Of Fiber Orientation On Dynamic Compressive Properties Of An Ultra-High Performance Concrete, Andrew B. Groeneveld

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Casting structural elements with ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) tends to create preferential fiber alignment, which affects the strength and must be accounted for in design. Fiber orientation effects in tension have been studied extensively, but less work has been performed for compression. This work characterizes the fiber orientation occurring in a typical UHPC beam and how that orientation affects compressive behavior at high strain rates. Specimens (36 total) were cored from the beam and their fiber orientations were non-destructively evaluated using x-ray computed tomography (CT). Fibers showed flow-induced alignment along the length of the beam, with orientation angles in the …

Probability-Based Hurricane Resilience Evaluation And Retrofitting For Residential Community, Yadong Dong Jan 2016

Probability-Based Hurricane Resilience Evaluation And Retrofitting For Residential Community, Yadong Dong

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Wood residential construction is vulnerable to hurricanes, as evident in recent hurricane events. Many studies indicated that the changing climate may very likely alter hurricane patterns, which could lead to more severe hurricane damage to the wood residential construction that accounts for 90% of the residence in the USA. On the other hand, deterioration of material increases the chance of structural failure by reducing the structural capacity (e.g., corrosion of fasteners in roof panel could significantly reduce the withdrawal capacity of the roofing structure during hurricane events).

Currently, most hurricane damage estimations only focus on direct loss (e.g., structural loss). …

Estimated Grass Grazing Removal Rate In A Semiarid Eurasian Steppe Watershed As Influenced By Climate, Xixi Wang, Shohreh Pedram, Tingxi Liu, Ruizhong Gao, Fengling Li, Yanyun Luo

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Grazing removal rate of grasses needs to be determined for various climate conditions to address eco-environmental concerns (e.g., desertification) related to steppe grassland degradation. The conventional approach, which requires survey data on animal species and heads as well as grass consumption per individual animal, is too costly and time-consuming to be applied at a watershed scale. The objective of this study was to present a new approach that can be used to estimate grazing removal rate with no requirement of animal-related data. The application of this new approach was demonstrated in a Eurasian semiarid typical-steppe watershed for an analysis period …

Low Impact Development Analysis And Comparative Assessment Of Wet Detention Ponds With Floating Treatment Wetlands, Nicholas Hartshorn Jan 2016

Low Impact Development Analysis And Comparative Assessment Of Wet Detention Ponds With Floating Treatment Wetlands, Nicholas Hartshorn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to examine, develop, and assess innovative best management practices (BMPs) in stormwater management for pollutant reduction, flood control, and environmental sustainability. Previous research has clearly shown that urban stormwater runoff quickly transports pathogens, metals, sediment, and chemical pollutants to receiving waterbodies, resulting in the degradation of receiving waters and disruption of ecological networks. In response to this growing concern, regulatory agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), have set forth regulations aimed at protecting and restoring waterbodies. These regulations include numeric nutrient criteria (NNC) and …

A Framework To Incorporate A Structural Capacity Indicator Into The State Of Louisiana Pavement Management System, Omar Salaheldin Elbagalati Jan 2016

A Framework To Incorporate A Structural Capacity Indicator Into The State Of Louisiana Pavement Management System, Omar Salaheldin Elbagalati

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Non-structural factors such as surface distresses and ride quality have been commonly used as the main indicators of in-service pavement conditions. In the last decade, the concept of implementing a structural condition index in Pavement Management System (PMS) to complement functional condition indices has become an important goal for many highway agencies. The Rolling Wheel Deflectometer (RWD) provides the ability to measure pavement deflection while operating at the posted speed limits causing no user delays. The objective of this study was two-fold. First, this study developed a model to predict pavement structural capacity at a length interval of 0.16 km …

Evaluation Of The Use Of High Frequency Acoustic Cavitation To Improve Water Quality In Commercial Catfish Operations, Bennett Elizabeth Barr Jan 2016

Evaluation Of The Use Of High Frequency Acoustic Cavitation To Improve Water Quality In Commercial Catfish Operations, Bennett Elizabeth Barr

Honors Theses

Catfish processing plants must chill the water used for their fillet wash and flush and refill their piping systems frequently, requiring a pause in operations until the piping flush is complete. There is a need for a (preferably non-chemical) solution that enables the plants to chill the water less and flush their systems less often to mitigate high energy and water consumption. High amplitude acoustic waves (sonication) were introduced into water samples from catfish ponds to determine if they could be used as a replacement for chemical treatments to improve the water quality in the plant piping systems. Preliminary tests …

Potential Wave Impacts On Shorelines In Intertidal Waterways, Collin Ries Jan 2016

Potential Wave Impacts On Shorelines In Intertidal Waterways, Collin Ries

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coastal erosion is caused by a deficit in the sediment balance along coastal shorelines. Within the intertidal waterway of Jacksonville, Florida, the primary processes acting on the shoreline are tidal currents and waves generated by winds and passing vessels. This study focuses on the analysis of vessel-generated waves and their possible effects on different shoreline types. The experiment conducted herein examines variations in turbidity related to passing boats at a specifically selected site location, at which different tidal stages expose three different shoreline types, a non-vegetated scarp, a vegetated scarp and a vegetated area with no scarp in the breaking …

Additionally, wind data collected with a directional anemometer from September, 2002, until October, 2008, are used to further characterize the long-term hydrodynamic forcing. With the shoreline oriented nominally 17o …

The Influence Of Sea-Level Rise On Salinity In The Lower St. Johns River And The Associated Physics, Teddy Mulamba Jan 2016

The Influence Of Sea-Level Rise On Salinity In The Lower St. Johns River And The Associated Physics, Teddy Mulamba

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The lower St Johns River is a low-gradient coastal river with tidal hydrodynamics that remain active from the Atlantic Ocean through to the upstream end of Lake George (river km 200). Salinity in the lower St Johns River is spatially and temporally variable, whereby the salinity distribution is driven primarily by the combination of ocean processes of tides and storm surges and hydrological processes of watershed runoff. This study examines the probability distributions and modes of behavior of salinity for present-day conditions using data, numerical modeling and eigen-analysis. The hypothesis is that long-term changes (decadal scale) in the ocean processes …
