Modeling Embankment Breach Due To Overtopping, Ali Asghari Tabrizi Jan 2016

Modeling Embankment Breach Due To Overtopping, Ali Asghari Tabrizi

Theses and Dissertations

Despite numerous embankment failures around the world, in-depth assessments as well as reliable, comprehensive sets of data of such failures are limited. Detailed understanding of the earthen embankment failure process and the dominant parameters affecting the failure are needed to predict and model the breach process precisely. Therefore, a series of laboratory experiments on embankment (i.e., dam and levee) overtopping as well as erodibility measurements using the Submerged Jet test are conducted. Also, to study the influence of different model parameters (e.g., turbulence model, bedload formula), one of the dam embankment experiments is simulated. The main goal of this research …

Age-Related Liquefaction Resistance Of Pleistocene Coastal Plain Sands In South Carolina, Michael J. Hasek Jan 2016

Age-Related Liquefaction Resistance Of Pleistocene Coastal Plain Sands In South Carolina, Michael J. Hasek

Theses and Dissertations

Soils of Pleistocene age in the South Carolina Coastal Plain have experienced liquefaction due to historic and pre-historic earthquakes. Numerous field and laboratory studies have shown that aged soil deposits maintain a greater resistance to liquefaction than younger soil deposits. The currently available methods for assessing liquefaction potential are based on cases in which soils are of Holocene age or younger (< 10,000 yrs). The Pleistocene age soils that were tested and characterized varied in age from about 200,000 years old to 1,400,000 years old. Several sites were investigated using field methods that included the seismic cone penetration test, cone penetration test, standard penetration test, and flat plate dilatometer. Piezometers were installed at the sites. Undisturbed soil samples were retrieved from the subsurface and frozen ex situ to minimize sample disturbance during transportation and laboratory handling. The undisturbed samples were used for cyclic triaxial testing in the laboratory and were tested for shear wave velocity and compression wave velocity using in-cell transducers. Laboratory tests were performed to determine the specific gravity, grain size distribution, moisture content, unit weight, Atterberg limits, Unified Soil Classification, and visual-manual description. Optical petrography and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the mineral content of the soils, to view grain characteristics, and to view microscopic features that were part of the soil aging process.

Laboratory index tests showed that Pleistocene soils consisted predominately of poorly-graded fine sands, silty sands, and clayey sands. Shear wave velocities from the cyclic triaxial test specimens were comparable to the in situ shear wave velocities measured using …

Shear Behavior Of Reinforced Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Noor S. Yacob Jan 2016

Shear Behavior Of Reinforced Fly Ash-Based Geopolymer Concrete, Noor S. Yacob

Masters Theses

"The geopolymerisation of aluminosilicate materials such as fly ash has been a radical change in construction material's chemistry and composition, compared to the portland cement-based concrete calcium silicate-hydrate chemistry. The adoption of fly ash in concrete industry is a good use of by-product ashes to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas implicitly. However, in this research, the replacement of portland cement by fly ash is 100%, which makes it a zero-cement concrete with no proprietary chemical additives.

Geopolymer concrete (GC) is a revolutionary synthetic material that combines sustainability and high engineering properties, and it is relatively cost-effective compared to portland …

"Tied arch bridges have been designed and constructed since the late 19th century. With their open vista owing to minimalist features tied arch bridges continue to appeal the public. Tied arch bridges are both aesthetic and economical alternates to long span bridges holding a place in the hierarchy of major bridges. They fit in a niche between viable and economical plate girder spans and short cable stayed bridge spans. There are several variations of the tied arch with the most common form being those having vertical hangers, stiff tie girders and slender arch ribs. This tied arch variation is examined …

Enhancing Project Management With Lean World Class Manufacturing In Construction, Jacob Randles Jan 2016

Enhancing Project Management With Lean World Class Manufacturing In Construction, Jacob Randles

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In construction, the goal of commercial projects is to turn a profit. This is achieved by minimizing inputs and maximizing outputs while building a product that meets the customer’s perception of value. Value is determined through pre-negotiated specifications, plans, and material quality. Even in U.S. military construction, the unit executing the construction wants to complete the task on time and on budget, which can be difficult to do. Studies on project completion showcase a surprisingly high rate of failure in reaching the aforementioned “on time, on budget” goal. It is important to understand the nuances and details of U.S. Army …

Use Of Laboratory Geophysical And Geotechnical Investigation Methods To Characterize Gypsum Rich Soils, Raghava A. Bhamidipati

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Gypsum rich soils are found in many parts of the world, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Most gypsum occurs in the form of evaporites, which are minerals that precipitate out of water due to a high rate of evaporation and a high mineral concentration. Gypsum rich soils make good foundation material under dry conditions but pose major engineering hazards when exposed to water. Gypsum acts as a weak cementing material and has a moderate solubility of about 2.5 g/liter. The dissolution of gypsum causes the soils to undergo unpredictable collapse settlement leading to severe structural damages. The damages incur …

A Data Driven Approach To Quantify The Impact Of Crashes, Obaidur Rahman Kazi Jan 2016

A Data Driven Approach To Quantify The Impact Of Crashes, Obaidur Rahman Kazi

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The growth of data has begun to transform the transportation research and policy, and open a new window for analyzing the impact of crashes. Currently for the crash impact analysis, researchers tend to rely on reported incident duration, which may not always be accurate. Further, impact of the crashes could linger a much longer time at upstream, even if the records are correct for the crash spot and it is a challenge to quantify the impact of a crash from the complex dynamics of the recurrent and non-recurrent congested condition. Therefore, a difference-in-speed approach is developed in this research to …

Long-Term Effects Of Forestry Best Management Practices On Hydrology And Water Chemistry In Three Appalchian Headwater Catchments, Kameryn I. Wright

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

In 1982, a study was initiated in the Field Branch watershed, in the University of Kentucky’s Robinson Forest, to evaluate forestry best management practice (BMP) effectiveness after intensive harvesting. The study utilized a paired watershed approach on three adjacent Field Branch subcatchments. One subcatchment was left as the control, one had BMPs implemented (including a 50-ft undisturbed buffer along the stream), and one was clear-cut to the stream’s banks without the use of BMPs (i.e. logger’s choice). Prior research has shown that logging can negatively impact watershed functions by altering stream hydrology, geomorphology, water quality, and instream habitat. Thus, the …
