Hydraulic Design Of Baffles In Disinfection Contact Tanks, Zachary H. Taylor, Jeremy S. Carlston, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study focuses on understanding the hydraulic design of baffled contact tanks using computational fluid dynamics simulations. In particular, we address the key question: for a given footprint of a rectangular tank with a specified inlet width (Winlet), how does the hydraulic efficiency of a baffled tank depend on the configuration of internal baffles? In an effort to address this question, a carefully conceived parametric study consisting of 30 high-resolution two-dimensional (planar) simulations was conducted to quantify the hydraulic efficiency of a laboratory scale tank as a function of dimensional relationships between key baffle design dimensions (baffle opening length Lbo, …

Effects Of Posttensioning Slippage On 2-Way Spanning Concrete Slabs, Niall Holmes, Eoin Byrne Jan 2015

Effects Of Posttensioning Slippage On 2-Way Spanning Concrete Slabs, Niall Holmes, Eoin Byrne

Articles

This paper investigates the effect of improper posttensioning of a 2-way spanning concrete slab subject to a central point load. Due to plate slippage alone, the support conditions only offered a 1-way spanning action which could have led to premature failure with dangerous consequences. Posttensioning can strengthen a flat slab against punching shear by controlling deflections and cracking under service loads compared with traditional punching shear reinforcing methods leading to more slender structures and economic solutions for longer spans. However, if the method is not properly applied, these thinner floor plates can fail in a brittle and sudden manner by …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Isotropic Slab Bridges Under Extreme Traffic Loading, Donya Hajializadeh, A. Salam Al-Sabah, Eugene J. Obrien, Debra F. Laefer, Bernard Enright

Articles

Probabilistic analysis of traffic loading on a bridge traditionally involves an extrapolation from measured or simulated load effects to a characteristic maximum value. In recent years, Long Run Simulation, whereby thousands of years of traffic are simulated, has allowed researchers to gain new insights into the nature of the traffic scenarios that govern at the limit state. For example, mobile cranes and low-loaders, sometimes accompanied by a common articulated truck, have been shown to govern in most cases. In this paper, the extreme loading scenarios identified in the Long Run Simulation are applied to a non-linear, two-dimensional (2D) plate finite …

Sustainable River-Basin Salinity Management: Treatment Of Natural Brine Springs For Recovery Of Purified Sodium Chloride And Other Valuable Minerals, Priscilla L. Sandoval

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A treatment process was developed to extract sodium chloride salt, via evaporation, from high-salinity natural brine springs. The source of the brine studied in this project is watershed of the Salt Fork of the Brazos River in Texas. When evaporation is applied to the brine, various impurities precipitate along with the sodium chloride salt (halite). Therefore, a treatment was developed in order to produce a valuable, high-purity salt product. The treatment consists of pretreating the brine with sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid to for softening and decarbonation. After evaporation, a brine wash post-treatment process was employed to increase the purity …

The Design Of A Modelling, Monitoring And Validation Method For A Solid Wall Structure, Timothy O'Leary, Gillian Menzies, Aidan Duffy Jan 2015

The Design Of A Modelling, Monitoring And Validation Method For A Solid Wall Structure, Timothy O'Leary, Gillian Menzies, Aidan Duffy

Conference Papers

Hygrothermal assessment is the combined analysis of heat, air and moisture transfer through the building fabric. The two approaches are covered by conventions known as the IS EN 5250:2011 (Glaser method) and IS EN 15026:2007 which differs from Glaser by solving the equations numerically using computer software. Results for hygrothermal analysis provide valuable information for surface and interstitial condensation risk assessment and the impact of energy upgrades. For traditional solid walled structures, conditions such as wind driven rain (WDR) and rising ground water can have a significant impact on the environmental behaviour and in particular the moisture behaviour of the …

First Steps In Developing Cement-Based Batteries To Power Cathodic Protection Of Embedded Steel In Concrete, Niall Holmes, Aimee Byrne, Brian Norton Jan 2015

First Steps In Developing Cement-Based Batteries To Power Cathodic Protection Of Embedded Steel In Concrete, Niall Holmes, Aimee Byrne, Brian Norton

Articles

This paper presents the first steps in developing innovative cement-based batteries to power cathodic protection in reinforced concrete structures. Initial electrical outputs of 1.55V and 23mA have been found to be sufficient to polarise prescribed corrosion currents of 20mA per m2 of embedded steel. Cathodic protection is a well-developed and powerful technique to limit the effects of steel reinforcement corrosion. However, as it requires an electrical supply day and night, it is often powered by non-environmentally friendly diesel generators or connected to the electrical grid. This paper focuses on increasing the ionic conductivity of the solution in the cement pores, …

Determination Of Explosive Energy Partition Values In Rock Blasting Through Small-Scale Testing, Joshua Calnan Jan 2015

Determination Of Explosive Energy Partition Values In Rock Blasting Through Small-Scale Testing, Joshua Calnan

Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering

Blasting is a critical part of most mining operations. The primary function of blasting is to fragment and move rock. For decades, attempts have been made at increasing the efficiency of blasting to reduce costs and increase production. Most of these attempts involve trial and error techniques that focus on changing a single output. These techniques are costly and time consuming and it has been shown that as one output is optimized other outputs move away from their optimum level. To truly optimize a blasting program, the transfer of explosive energy into individual components must be quantified. Explosive energy is …

An Investigation Into Bacterial Contamination In An Urban Nebraska Stream Using Microbial Source Tracking, Allison R. Speicher Jan 2015

An Investigation Into Bacterial Contamination In An Urban Nebraska Stream Using Microbial Source Tracking, Allison R. Speicher

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

High levels of fecal bacteria in surface waters are a public health concern due to the enteric illnesses caused by primary contact with these waters. Shortcomings in the current fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) monitoring approach and the ubiquity of pathogen-impaired water bodies has led to the development of microbial source tracking (MST), a molecular tool that can identify potential fecal contamination sources. In this study we use a bacterial community based approach examining the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene to elucidate sources of fecal bacteria in Antelope Creek, an urban creek in Lincoln Nebraska.

We hypothesized that sediment …

The investigation included a combination of 53 experiments and series of finite-element based numerical simulations. Three levels of local damage modes were investegated based on the severity of the degree of damage in the impacted panels. Mesh reinforcement ratio within the range of reinforcement ratio considered, namely 0.19% to 0.48%, was irrelevant to …

Overweight Vehicle Permitting Alternatives, Stephanie R Everett Jan 2015

Overweight Vehicle Permitting Alternatives, Stephanie R Everett

Open Access Dissertations

Overweight vehicles exceed the federal and/or state statutory limits for either the gross vehicle weight (GVW) or the weight of individual axles or axle groups. National and state limits on vehicle weights were established to preserve the highway infrastructure. Past research has shown that overweight operations, while causing significant damage to roads and bridges, can enhance the trucking industry productivity, and thus yield economic benefits both regionally and nationally. In the United States, individual states administer oversize and overweight vehicle permit programs to regulate and collect revenues from overweight operations. Differences in the truck size and weight limits and overweight …

Model For Consolidation Analysis Of Layered Soils Under Depth-Dependent Loading, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox Jan 2015

Model For Consolidation Analysis Of Layered Soils Under Depth-Dependent Loading, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A numerical model is presented for one-dimensional large strain consolidation of a layered soil stratum. The algorithm accounts for vertical strain, soil self-weight, conventional constitutive relationships, changing material properties during consolidation, unload/reload, time-dependent loading and boundary conditions, an externally applied hydraulic gradient, and multiple soil layers with different material properties. The model can also accommodate depth-dependent loading and variable preconsolidation stress profiles. Verification checks of the model show excellent agreement with available analytical and numerical solutions for consolidation of soils with multiple layers and depth-dependent loading. An overview of this model is presented, and a parametric study is performed to …

Characterizing The Influence Of Carbon On The Flowrate And Disinfection Efficacy Of Household Ceramic Water Filters, Jessie Yvonne Hahn

Masters Theses

"Drinking water contamination is a major cause of disease in developing countries. Point of Use (POU) water treatment technologies generally have low initial cost and allow rapid availability of improved water. Ceramic pot filters (CPFs) are a POU water source treatment technology which filter water by gravity through a porous ceramic media. Some filters in use contain carbon remnants left from the fugitive pore former as a dark carbon core. Using disk-shaped experimental ceramic filters produced in the lab to have varying levels of carbon, the percent carbon present was measured and a visual analysis method was developed to determine …

Probabilistic Performance-Based Hurricane Engineering (Pbhe) Framework, Vipin Unnithan Unnikrishnan Jan 2015

Probabilistic Performance-Based Hurricane Engineering (Pbhe) Framework, Vipin Unnithan Unnikrishnan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In modern times, hurricanes have caused enormous losses to the communities worldwide both in terms of property damage and loss of life. In light of these losses, a comprehensive methodology is required to improve the quantification of risk and the design of structures subject to hurricane hazard. This research develops a probabilistic Performance-Based Hurricane Engineering (PBHE) framework for hurricane risk assessment. The proposed PBHE is based on the total probability theorem, similar to the Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE) framework developed by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center, and to the Performance-Based Wind Engineering (PBWE) framework. The methodology presented in …

Experimental Designs For Model Discrimination And Uncertainty Reduction In Groundwater Modeling, Hai Van Pham Jan 2015

Experimental Designs For Model Discrimination And Uncertainty Reduction In Groundwater Modeling, Hai Van Pham

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Groundwater systems are complex and subject to multiple interpretations due to a lack of sufficient information. Different propositions (or alternatives) are often proposed to represent uncertain model components resulted in many conceptual models using the same data. Yet considering too many models may lead to high prediction uncertainty and may lose the purpose of model development. To decrease the prediction uncertainty due to conceptual model uncertainty, two experimental designs are proposed. The first experimental design intends to identify model propositions in each uncertain model component. A discrimination criterion is developed based on posterior model probability. Bayesian model averaging (BMA) is …

The motivation of this study is to extend applications of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for typical open channel flows to elucidate the time dependent three dimensional flow and sediment transport features which are usually difficult to measure in experiments. Detailed investigations are performed on the unsteady features and, in particular, turbulent structures of the flow to demonstrate the great potential of eddy resolving methods. The instantaneous flow and sediment transport fields are investigated together with the existence of coherent structures. These structures together with ejection events (u' < 0, w' > 0), are responsible for the vertical and lateral transport of suspended sediment from …

Development And Optimization Of Non-Hydrostatic Models For Water Waves And Fluid-Vegetation Interaction, Ling Zhu Jan 2015

Development And Optimization Of Non-Hydrostatic Models For Water Waves And Fluid-Vegetation Interaction, Ling Zhu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary objective of this study is twofold: 1) to develop an efficient and accurate non-hydrostatic wave model for fully dispersive highly nonlinear waves, and 2) to investigate the interaction between waves and submerged flexible vegetation using a fully coupled wave-vegetation model. This research consists of three parts. Firstly, an analytical dispersion relationship is derived for waves simulated by models utilizing Keller-box scheme and central differencing for vertical discretization. The phase speed can be expressed as a rational polynomial function of the dimensionless water depth, $kh$, and the layer distribution in water column becomes an optimizable parameter in this function. …

Polychlorinated Biphenyl Source Identification In Fish Tissue Using A Multivariate Statistical Evaluation Of Congeners And Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, William Edward Corl Iii

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were commercially produced mixtures primarily utilized as dielectric fluids in the electrical industry. However, due to their stability, they were widely used in many other applications. Although production of PCBs ceased in the 1970's, they continue to be a contaminant in the environment due to their widespread use, their recalcitrant behavior, and their proposed toxicological effects.

In 2008, a routine environmental investigation of an abandoned, concrete-lined pool at a Department of Defense (DoD) training facility in Williamsburg, Virginia led to the discovery of a PCB release from the facility into an adjacent reservoir. A forensic study was …

Damage Detection Through Acoustic Emission Of Fracture Processes In Concrete Masonry Units, John Alexander Cain Jan 2015

Damage Detection Through Acoustic Emission Of Fracture Processes In Concrete Masonry Units, John Alexander Cain

Masters Theses

"Masonry structures are vulnerable to earthquakes; their brittleness and discontinuous formation make them susceptible to collapse. In the event of an emergency, this could be detrimental and perhaps fatal. The area of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is focused on understanding the behavior of structures for the sake of safety and predicting their longevity. One applicable technique to monitor this behavior is Acoustic Emission (AE). Acoustic Emissions are transient elastic waves released as microcracks nucleate from stress intensities, coalesce into cracks and then accumulate as damage. AE monitoring is a favorable method because it is capable of detecting cracking from within …
