Nebraska’S Natural Resources Districts: An Assessment Of A Large-Scale Locally Controlled Water Governance Framework, Ann Bleed, Christina Hoffman Babbitt Mar 2015

Nebraska’S Natural Resources Districts: An Assessment Of A Large-Scale Locally Controlled Water Governance Framework, Ann Bleed, Christina Hoffman Babbitt

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

In 1972 the State of Nebraska created the Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) to consolidate a multitude of single-purpose local natural resource districts into a more comprehensive, holistic, and efficient natural resources governance system. While consolidation and efficiency was important, so was the concept of maintaining local control. Thus, Nebraska rejected the governance framework of a single top-down state agency, preferring to create NRDs that are each governed by a locally elected board. The locally elected governing boards of the NRDs were given broad authorities over many of the state’s natural resources, including groundwater. Such a governance structure was, and to …

Liquefaction Potential Of Recent Fills Versus Natural Sands Located In High-Seismicity Regions Using Shear-Wave Velocity, R. Dobry, T. Abdoun, K.H. Stokoe Ii., R. E.S. Moss, M. Hatton, H. El Ganainy Mar 2015

Liquefaction Potential Of Recent Fills Versus Natural Sands Located In High-Seismicity Regions Using Shear-Wave Velocity, R. Dobry, T. Abdoun, K.H. Stokoe Ii., R. E.S. Moss, M. Hatton, H. El Ganainy

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The liquefaction potential of clean and silty sands is examined on the basis of the field measurement of the shear-wave velocity, Vs. The starting point is the database of 225 case histories supporting the Andrus-Stokoe Vs-based liquefaction chart for sands, silts, and gravels. Only clean and silty sands with nonplastic fines are considered, resulting in a reduced database of 110 case histories, which are plotted separately by type of deposit. A line of constant cyclic shear strain, γcl≈0.03%, is recommended for liquefaction evaluation of recent uncompacted clean and silty sand fills and earthquake magnitude, Mw=7.5. The geologically recent natural silty …

Moor Movement: Automated Docking On Drought-Stricken Reservoirs, Daniel Beck Mar 2015

Moor Movement: Automated Docking On Drought-Stricken Reservoirs, Daniel Beck

Landscape Architecture

Moor Movement establishes a mechanized docking system for unpredictable shoreline fluctuations on inland lakes and reservoirs. Due to climate change and warmer global temperatures, the threat of ocean level rise has initiated massive proposals to address the interface between ocean and man-made infrastructure. While this is a monumental problem, ocean level rise is not the only immediate threat. The recently declared emergency drought conditions in California are finally bringing attention to inland lakes and reservoirs. While ocean levels might rise 2-7 feet in 100 years, a lake could drop 100 feet in 5 years. What happens to access roads, marinas, …

Factorial Design Approach In Proportioning Prestressed Self-Compacting Concrete, Wu-Jian Long, Kamal Khayat, Guillaume Lemieux, Feng Xing, Wei-Lun Wang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In order to model the effect of mixture parameters and material properties on the hardened properties of, prestressed self-compacting concrete (SCC), and also to investigate the extensions of the statistical models, a factorial design was employed to identify the relative significance of these primary parameters and their interactions in terms of the mechanical and visco-elastic properties of SCC. In addition to the 16 fractional factorial mixtures evaluated in the modeled region of -1 to +1, eight axial mixtures were prepared at extreme values of -2 and +2 with the other variables maintained at the central points. Four replicate central mixtures …

Impacts Of Replacing A Tight Diamond Interchange With A Spui – A Wilsonville Interchange Study, Sina Vadaei Mar 2015

Impacts Of Replacing A Tight Diamond Interchange With A Spui – A Wilsonville Interchange Study, Sina Vadaei

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Tight diamond interchanges (TDI) and single point urban interchanges (SPUIs) are generally types of interchanges that can be used interchangeably in areas where right-of-way is constrained. There are limited amount of research conducted regarding the operational analysis and comparison of these two interchanges. The research that has been done regarding this topic are outdated and generally conclude that SPUIs perform better or about the same. Without knowing the true performances of the two interchange designs, it would make it difficult for engineers and planners to choose between the two interchanges.

This research study will use the current updated version of …

Investigation Of Laboratory Test Procedures For Assessing The Structural Capacity Of Geogrid-Reinforced Aggregate Base Materials, Jaren Tolman Knighton Mar 2015

Investigation Of Laboratory Test Procedures For Assessing The Structural Capacity Of Geogrid-Reinforced Aggregate Base Materials, Jaren Tolman Knighton

Theses and Dissertations

The modulus of aggregate base layers in pavement structures can potentially be increased through the use of geogrid. However, methods for determining how much structural benefit can be expected from a given geogrid product have not been standardized. A laboratory testing protocol is therefore needed to enable evaluation, in terms of modulus or California bearing ratio (CBR), for example, of the degree of improvement that may be achieved by a given geogrid. Consequently, the objective of this research was to identify a laboratory test method that can be used to quantify improvements in structural capacity of aggregate base materials reinforced …

Highway Rail Crossing Prioritization, Bryan Gibson, Reginald R. Souleyrette

Kentucky Transportation Center Technical Assistance Report

Research team members at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) worked with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) to develop a high-level mechanism for ranking highway-rail crossings for reconstruction and/or rehabilitation. The Highway Rail Crossing Prioritization implementation study yielded the Rail Crossing Improvement Priority (RCIP), which combined qualitative measures of crossing conditions with quantitative measures including proposed project costs and a valuation of the crossing based on rail and truck traffic. This effort provides a template by which further development can yield prioritization procedures for road-rail grade separation projects.

Optimal Pavement Design And Rehabilitation Planning Using A Mechanistic-Empirical Approach, Yun Bai, Osman Erman Gungor, Jaime Alberto Hernandez-Urrea, Yanfeng Ouyang, Imad L. Al-Qadi Mar 2015

Optimal Pavement Design And Rehabilitation Planning Using A Mechanistic-Empirical Approach, Yun Bai, Osman Erman Gungor, Jaime Alberto Hernandez-Urrea, Yanfeng Ouyang, Imad L. Al-Qadi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents the development of a pavement design and rehabilitation optimization decision-making framework based on Mechanistic-Empirical (ME) roughness transfer models. The AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design (the software of Pavement ME Design) is used to estimate pavement deterioration based on the combined effects of permanent deformation, fatigue, and thermal cracking. The optimization problem is first formulated into a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model to address the predominant trade-off between agency and user costs. To deal with the complexity associated with the pavement roughness transfer functions in the software and to use the roughness values as input to the optimization framework, a …

Modeling Stokes Flow Using Hierarchical Structure-Preserving B-Splines, Kendrick Monroe Shepherd Mar 2015

Modeling Stokes Flow Using Hierarchical Structure-Preserving B-Splines, Kendrick Monroe Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations

A new spline space, the hierarchical structure-preserving B-spline space, is introduced and implemented in the analysis of Stokes flow. The space, when properly constrained, is shown to be stable and to have at least optimal convergence rates in the velocity field and suboptimal convergence rates in the pressure field. However, results show that superoptimal convergence can often be expected in the pressure field, likely due to error reduction in the velocity field. Like other hierarchical spline spaces, these splines are shown to greatly increase accuracy and to drastically lower computation times for analyses on domains whose solution fields have singularities …

Using Remote Sensing To Explore The Time History Of Emergent Vegetation At Malheur Lake, Oregon, Zola Yaa Adjei Mar 2015

Using Remote Sensing To Explore The Time History Of Emergent Vegetation At Malheur Lake, Oregon, Zola Yaa Adjei

Theses and Dissertations

The growth patterns of emergent vegetation can be a useful indicator for factors affecting lake health. However, field data to characterize emergent vegetation at many reservoirs may not be available or may be limited to small, isolated areas. We present a case study using remotely sensed data from the Landsat satellite to generate data to represent emergent vegetation in the near-shoreline and tributary delta areas of Malheur Lake, Oregon. We selected late June images for this study as vegetation is relatively mature in late June and visible, but has not completely grown-in providing a better indication of vegetation coverage in …

Shear Strength Prediction Methods For Grouted Masonry Shear Walls, Patrick Dillon Mar 2015

Shear Strength Prediction Methods For Grouted Masonry Shear Walls, Patrick Dillon

Theses and Dissertations

The research in this dissertation is divided between three different approaches for predicting the shear strength of reinforcement masonry shear walls. Each approach provides increasing accuracy and precision in predicting the shear strength of masonry walls. The three approaches were developed or validated using data from 353 wall tests that have been conducted over the past half century. The data were collected, scrutinized, and synthesized using principles of meta-analysis. Predictions made with current Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) shear strength equation are unconservative and show a higher degree of variation for partially-grouted walls. The first approach modifies the existing MSJC …

Geometry Optimization Of Uncoated Silicon Microcantilever-Based Gas Density Sensors, M. T. Boudjiet, J. Bertrand, F. Mathieur, L. Nicu, L. Mazenq, T. Leïchlé, Stephen M. Heinrich, C. Pellet, I. Dufour

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In the absence of coating, the only way to improve the sensitivity of silicon microcantilever-based density sensors is to optimize the device geometry. Based on this idea, several microcantilevers with different shapes (rectangular-, U- and T-shaped microstructures) and dimensions have been fabricated and tested in the presence of hydrogen/nitrogen mixtures (H2/N2) of various concentrations ranging from 0.2% to 2%. In fact, it is demonstrated that wide and short rectangular cantilevers are more sensitive to gas density changes than U- and T-shaped devices of the same overall dimensions, and that the thickness does not affect the sensitivity …

Assessment Of Multi-Story Building Seismic Design Factors With Structural Irregularity, El Sayed Abdel Naby Abdel Aziz Abou Khalifa Mar 2015

Assessment Of Multi-Story Building Seismic Design Factors With Structural Irregularity, El Sayed Abdel Naby Abdel Aziz Abou Khalifa

Theses

Many high-rise buildings are practically irregular as a result of the architectural and service requirements in the design process, errors and modification during the construction phase, and changes of the building use throughout its service life. Structural irregularities could increase the uncertainties related to the ability of the building to meet the design objectives. This study is thus devoted to assess the safety margins and calibrate the seismic design response factors of modern high-rise buildings with different vertical irregularity features. A brief survey of the most common vertical irregularities inn reinforced concrete multi-story buildings is conducted to select reference structures. …

Reducing Drifts In Buckling Restrained Braced Framesthrough Elastic Stories, Jennifer Lorraine Craft Mar 2015

Reducing Drifts In Buckling Restrained Braced Framesthrough Elastic Stories, Jennifer Lorraine Craft

Theses and Dissertations

It is possible to reduce residual and maximum drifts in buildings by adding “elastic stories” that engage gravity columns in seismic response. An elastic story is a story wherein the buckling restrained brace frame (BRBF) size is increased to prevent yielding when an earthquake occurs. Buildings ranging from 4–16 stories were designed with various elastic story brace sizes and locations to determine the optimal combination to best reduce drifts. Gravity column stiffnesses were also varied in elastic story buildings to determine the effects on drifts. Computer models were used to analyze these buildings under a suite of earthquakes. Adding elastic …

Multimodal Internal Waves Generated Over A Subcritical Ridge: Impact Of The Upper-Ocean Stratification, Xie Jieshuo, Jiayi Pan, David A. Jay Mar 2015

Multimodal Internal Waves Generated Over A Subcritical Ridge: Impact Of The Upper-Ocean Stratification, Xie Jieshuo, Jiayi Pan, David A. Jay

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Interaction of barotropic tides with subsurface topography is vital to ocean mixing. Yet the behavior of large-amplitude, nonlinear, internal solitary waves (ISWs) that can cause strong mixing remains poorly understood, especially that of higher-mode and multimodal internal waves. Therefore, a 2.5-dimensional, nonhydrostatic model with adjustable vertical resolution was developed to investigate effects of upper-ocean stratification on tidally induced multimodal internal waves and to show how they are generated by the subcritical ridge where only upward-propagating internal wave beams (IWBs) are present. The effects of the stratification on properties and characteristics of the excited IWBs and on the energy partition of …

Experimental Testing Of Shallow Embedded Connections Between Steel Columns And Concrete Footings, Nicholas Valgardson Barnwell Mar 2015

Experimental Testing Of Shallow Embedded Connections Between Steel Columns And Concrete Footings, Nicholas Valgardson Barnwell

Theses and Dissertations

Shallow embedded column connections are widely used for columns resisting gravity loads in current design methods. These connections are usually considered “pinned” for structural analysis. In reality these connections fall in between a fixed and a pinned condition. Although methods exist to estimate the stiffness and strength of exposed columns or embedded columns under lateral loads, little research has been done to determine the strength of shallow embedded columns. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the strength of these connections. A total of 12 specimens with varying orientation, embedment depth, and column size were loaded laterally until failure …

Development And Lab Calibration Of The Pnuematic In-Situ Soil Caving Index Sampler (Piscis), Michael A. Grolle Mar 2015

Development And Lab Calibration Of The Pnuematic In-Situ Soil Caving Index Sampler (Piscis), Michael A. Grolle

Master's Theses

The caving/sloughing of sandy layers into drilled shafts is a common and costly phenomenon in the drilling industry. A prototype soil-testing device known as the Pneumatic In-situ Soil Caving Index Sampler (PISCIS) has been developed to test sandy layers above the water table for their propensity to cave/slough into a drilled shaft during the drilling process. The PISCIS fits down a Cone Penetration Test (CPT) hole and uses air pressure to agitate a sample off of the hole wall that is then collected and weighed. Large-scale lab testing was conducted using sand under a variety of simulated overburden pressures and …

Nutrient Removal From Clarified Municipal Wastewater Using Microalgae Raceway Ponds, Justin Andrew Kraetsch Mar 2015

Nutrient Removal From Clarified Municipal Wastewater Using Microalgae Raceway Ponds, Justin Andrew Kraetsch

Master's Theses

Shallow, mixed raceway ponds can be used to grow microalgae for the dual purposes of wastewater treatment and biofuel feedstock production. To improve the environmental sustainability of microalgae biofuels and to alleviate resource limitations, nutrients remaining after biofuel production should be recycled for additional cultivation. This thesis considers three topics: wastewater treatment by algae, nitrogen and phosphorus assimilation by algae, and algae cell disruption to facilitate nutrient recovery.

The main experimental work was done in pilot raceway ponds growing polycultures of microalgae on clarified municipal wastewater. In addition, two lab-scale pretreatment technologies were tested for their ability to disrupt cells, …
