Improved Bias Correction Techniques For Hydrological Simulations Of Climate Change, David W. Pierce, Daniel R. Cayan, Edwin P. Maurer, John T. Abatzoglou, Katherine C. Hegewisch
Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering
Global climate model (GCM) output typically needs to be bias corrected before it can be used for climate change impact studies. Three existing bias correction methods, and a new one developed here, are applied to daily maximum temperature and precipitation from 21 GCMs to investigate how different methods alter the climate change signal of the GCM. The quantile mapping (QM) and cumulative distribution function transform (CDF-t) bias correction methods can significantly alter the GCM’s mean climate change signal, with differences of up to 2°C and 30% points for monthly mean temperature and precipitation, respectively. Equidistant quantile matching (EDCDFm) bias correction …
The Aerodynamic And Dynamic Loading Of A Slender Structure By An Impacting Tornado-Like Vortex: The Influence Of Relative Vortex-To-Structure Size On Structural Loading, Matthew Nicholas Strasser
The Aerodynamic And Dynamic Loading Of A Slender Structure By An Impacting Tornado-Like Vortex: The Influence Of Relative Vortex-To-Structure Size On Structural Loading, Matthew Nicholas Strasser
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Structural loading produced by an impacting vortex is a hazardous phenomenon that is encountered in numerous applications ranging from the destruction of residences by tornados to the chopping of tip vortices by rotors. Adequate design of structures to resist vortex-induced structural loading necessitates study of the phenomenon that control the structural loading produced by an impacting vortex. This body of work extends the current knowledge base of vortex-structure interaction by evaluating the influence of the relative vortex-to-structure size on the structural loading that the vortex produces. A computer model is utilized to directly simulate the two-dimensional impact of an impinging …
Development Of Pre-Stressed Cfrp Fatigue Retrofits For Common Steel Bridge Connections, Korey Albert Pough
Development Of Pre-Stressed Cfrp Fatigue Retrofits For Common Steel Bridge Connections, Korey Albert Pough
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Aging or deterioration of the nation’s bridge infrastructure is a significant issue that requires attention. Causes for much of this deterioration can be attributed to two main factors, 1) corrosion, and 2) metallic fatigue, both of which work together to reduce the strength and serviceability of bridge components over time. In many instances, strengthening of bridge components using localized retrofits offers an economical and fast solution for increasing the longevity of existing steel bridges; however, such retrofits must be resilient to further corrosion and fatigue damage. In this study, a localized retrofit is developed using pre-stressed Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer …

Application Of Polyacrylamide-Based Floc Logs For Turbidity Control At Highway Construction Sites, Kien Ngo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Runoff waters generated on highway construction sites can have turbidities in excess of the proposed EPA regulatory standard of 280 NTU due to large areas of exposed soil. The objective of this research was to develop best management practices (BMPs) for the use of anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) based Floc Logs, for turbidity control. Five commercially available types of PAM-based Floc Logs were evaluated in jar tests, using soil excavated from Cato Springs Research Center (CSRC, Fayetteville AR) and six types of clay from the Clay Minerals Society (Chantilly, VA). These results show that no single Floc Log type was suitable …

A Hybrid Approach For Increasing Baffling Factors In Contact Tanks, Justin J. Kattnig, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel approach using a hybrid combination of internal baffles and industrial packing material is investigated in order to optimize the hydraulic residence time of a 1,500-gal rectangular concrete tank. Hydraulic residence time, which is commonly classified using the baffling factor (BF), was determined from residence time distribution curves obtained using both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and physical tracer studies. CFD simulations were used to model two scenarios. The first scenario was a base system consisting of an unbaffled concrete tank, and the second scenario was a two-baffle system. Computational simulation results were experimentally validated via tracer studies on …

Sustainability Assessment For Energy Systems And Chemical Process Industries, Michael J. Matzen
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Sustainability has become an important factor in the chemical process and energy industries with a strong drive for process improvements towards more environmentally conscious solutions. However, there are many ways of defining sustainability and even more ways of trying to determine how sustainable a process is. This work looks into applying a conjunction of tools including; process simulation, multi-criteria decision matrices and life-cycle assessment to more quantitatively determine sustainability metrics. We have applied these tools for the production of electricity, methanol and dimethyl ether. A novel method of electricity production, in chemical looping combustion (CLC), was used that inherently involves …
Improving Water Quality Forecasting Using Data Assimilation, Hamideh Riazi
Improving Water Quality Forecasting Using Data Assimilation, Hamideh Riazi
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Population growth increases agricultural, industrial and human activities which threaten the quality of water resources, especially water supply sources such as lakes and reservoirs. In potentially high-impact situations such as algal blooms, active measures such as controlled release from reservoirs may be necessary. To minimize release while meeting the water quality requirements, accurate short-range water quality forecast is necessary. Because watershed water quality models have a large number of state variables most of which are never observed, their initial conditions (IC) are subject to large uncertainties which may propagate into large forecast errors. In this research, a data assimilation (DA) …

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste is one of the major components of the solid waste and is defined as a waste stream resulting from the construction, renovation and demolition of structures such as buildings, roads, and bridges. The amount of C&D waste has been in an upsurge with rapid growth in construction works and is expected to grow even more. As such, the effective waste management for C&D disposal has been a global issue owing to the increasing construction works worldwide. Although landfill disposal of C&D waste is not the preferred method of the C&D waste management, a significant portion …

Estimation Of Rebar Corrosion In Concrete Using Ground Penetrating Radar, Rakesh Krishnarajapete Raju
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
The purpose of this research was to quantitatively relate the amount of rebar corrosion in concrete with the amplitude of electromagnetic waves generated from Ground penetrating radar (GPR). Many studies have been undertaken on qualitative measurement of corrosion, but there are very few studies regarding estimation of rebar corrosion quantitatively. This experiment involved the use of accelerated corrosion by impressed current technique to corrode the rebar inside the concrete and GPR to determine the extent of corrosion, while making a comparison with a stainless steel bar which was used as a cathode to create a galvanic cell action. Rebars were …
Improving The Rainfall And Flood Frequency Analyses Using Stochastic Storm Transposition Method, Morteza Kiani
Improving The Rainfall And Flood Frequency Analyses Using Stochastic Storm Transposition Method, Morteza Kiani
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Reproduction and realization of historical rainfall events provides foundations for flood and rainfall frequency analyses and the advancement of meteorological studies. Stochastic storm transposition (SST) is a method for such a purpose and enables us to perform frequency analyses by transposing observed historical storm events over any given watershed. The goal of this study is to stochastically examine the impacts of extreme events on all locations in a homogeneity zone. Storms with the same probability of occurrence on a defined homogenous neighborhood will generate various impacts due to spatial and temporal variations of the storms. Transposing storms occurring in the …

The United States earth retaining structure market exceeds 170 million square feet annually and there are over 50 different retaining systems to select from which are unique in design and construction. Depending on the type of retaining structure, unit costs vary from less than $20 to in excess of $250 per square foot. Selecting the technically appropriate and cost-effective system is often critical to project cost and schedule. The Recycled Plastic Pin (RPP) has potential to be utilized as a sustainable and cost effective option to stabilize the surficial slope failure. RPP have been successfully used in Missouri, Iowa and …
Experimental Study On Seismic Performance Of Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams And Rectangular Squat Walls With Innovative Reinforcement Configurations, Poorya Hajyalikhani
Experimental Study On Seismic Performance Of Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams And Rectangular Squat Walls With Innovative Reinforcement Configurations, Poorya Hajyalikhani
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Reinforced concrete core walls, coupled by diagonally reinforced coupling beams (DCBs), are a very efficient seismic force resisting system for medium- to high-rise buildings. The diagonal reinforcing bars in DCBs are most effective when the beam has a span-to-depth ratio, ln/h, less than 2. Modern construction, due to architectural requirements, typically requires span-to-depth ratios between 2.4 to 4, which leads to a very shallow angle of inclination of the diagonal reinforcement (generally between 10 to 20 degrees). The lower angles of inclination, combined with the detailing requirements specified in ACI 318, results in reinforcement congestion as well as design and …
Characterization And Comparison Of Fresh And Landfilled Solid Waste, Kavya Koganti
Characterization And Comparison Of Fresh And Landfilled Solid Waste, Kavya Koganti
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
The understanding of the characteristics of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is very important in planning, designing and operating and/or upgrading the landfill operation system. It is well anticipated that the fresh MSW will be different from the landfilled MSW due to degradation. However, there is no systematic study on the comparison of physical properties of fresh and landfilled waste from bioreactor and/or enhanced leachate recirculated (ELR) landfills. The most important MSW properties to be considered while planning a landfill system are physical composition, moisture content, unit weight and volatile solids content. These properties are of particular interest especially when an …
Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Behavior Of Unsaturated Clayey Soils Via Thermo/Suction-Controlled Ring Shear Testing, Jairo Edmundo Yepes Heredia
Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Behavior Of Unsaturated Clayey Soils Via Thermo/Suction-Controlled Ring Shear Testing, Jairo Edmundo Yepes Heredia
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
There is a lot of geotechnical infrastructure made of compacted soil, or resting on unsaturated ground, which involves a wide range of deformations. Calculation of foundation settlement, for instance, requires a good estimation of soil stiffness at relatively small strains. Analysis of natural and engineered earth slopes, embankments, and soil bearing capacity, on the other hand, requires good estimations of shear strength, from peak to residual. Besides, despite the critical importance of the thermo-mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils in many geotechnical applications, the effect of relatively high temperature on shear strength and stiffness properties of unsaturated soils is not yet …
Mitigating Pavement Edge Drop Off, Wayne Jensen, Niles Uerling
Mitigating Pavement Edge Drop Off, Wayne Jensen, Niles Uerling
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
The objective of this research was to investigate and document practices currently being used by the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) districts and other State DOTs to mitigate pavement edge drop off. The NDOR has developed (or borrowed) and is currently incorporating into its standard practices several procedures that significantly decrease the incidence and magnitude of pavement edge-drop off. As these practices become more fully integrated into highway reconstruction projects, pavement edge drop off is expected to decrease dramatically. Localized areas of pavement edge drop off along paved lanes with bare or vegetated shoulders were noted as posing particular problems …
Medium-Range Ensemble Precipitation And Streamflow Forecasting For The Upper Trinity River Basin In Texas Via The Nws Hydrologic Ensemble Forecast Service, Hossein Sadeghi
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Compared to forecasts of short-term precipitation accumulations (daily or shorter) at lead times larger than a few days, those of longer-term accumulations (3-daily or longer) are significantly more skillful owing to the larger temporal scale of aggregation. If one can utilize this skill present in medium-range precipitation forecast in hydrologic prediction, it is very likely that the lead time of hydrologic forecasts, in particular, of streamflow and soil moisture may be extended. Though forecasts of longer-term accumulations of precipitation are more skillful than those of shorter-term accumulations, precipitation forecasts in general are too uncertain to be used as deterministic, or …

Texas with a gross state product (GSP) of $1.4 trillion dollars is the second largest economy in the U.S. Its size and population, central location, Gulf coastline, and energy resources require a reliable freight transportation system to facilitate further growth. This thesis focuses on the feasibility of Underground Freight Transportation …
Merging Radar-Only Qpe And Rain Gauge Data Via Conditional Bias-Penalized Optimal Estimation, Beomgeun Kim
Merging Radar-Only Qpe And Rain Gauge Data Via Conditional Bias-Penalized Optimal Estimation, Beomgeun Kim
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
A new technique for merging radar precipitation estimates and rain gauge data is developed and evaluated to improve multisensor quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). Various types of linear and nonlinear techniques have been used to combine rain gauge and radar data. Linear cokriging and its variants, for example, may be considered as the best linear unbiased estimators which minimize the error variance in the unconditional sense. They are, however, subject to conditional biases (CB) that may be unacceptably large for estimation of heavy-to-extreme precipitation. In this work, I develop, apply, and evaluate conditional bias-penalized cokriging (CBPCK) for spatial estimation of precipitation …
Enhanced Shrinkage Characterization Of Clayey Soils, Raju Acharya
Enhanced Shrinkage Characterization Of Clayey Soils, Raju Acharya
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Surficial slope failure is a common problem experienced by most of the compacted earth dams in Texas and several other southern states in USA as a result of desiccation or shrinkage induced cracking of the surficial soils. Cracking of the soil occurs when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength during drying process. Tensile stress increases with an increase in shrinkage strain and thus soil chemical admixtures can reduce the tensile stress by reducing the shrinkage potential of soil. Inclusion of such admixtures invariably affects the tensile strength. Yet there are not many test methods that could be utilized for …

Shear Behavior Of Steel-Fiber Reinforced Ultra-High-Strength Self-Compacted Concrete Beams, Omar Jum’Ah Za’Al Al Rawashdeh
Theses
Ultra-high-strength concrete is a new class of concrete that has been the result of the progress in concrete material science and development. This new type of concrete is characterized with very high compressive strength; about 100 MPa. Ultra-high strength concrete shows very brittle failure behavior compared to normal-strength concrete. Steel fibers will significantly reduce the workability of ultra-high strength concrete. The development and use of self-compacting concrete has provided a solution to the workability issue. The combination of technology and knowledge to produce Ultra-High strength fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete was proved to be feasible. Few studies investigated the effect of …

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires state transportation agencies to submit a biennial report on local highway finances. The purpose of these reports is to provide FHWA with the data it needs to capture the financing of highway activities at the local level. Based on this information, it can identify trends in revenue, expenditures, investments, and program development, and in turn make decisions about future investments. The report, FHWA-536, asks agencies to report on four areas of local highway finance: 1) disposition of highway-user revenues; 2) revenues used for roads and streets identified by source and funding type; 3) road …

Evaluation Of Thermal Imaging Technology For Commercial Vehicle Screening, Jennifer R. Walton, Mark S. Spellman, Joseph D. Crabtree
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Brake and tire violations are common problems identified through commercial vehicle inspections. Identifying and correcting these types of problems before a crash occurs can produce significant safety benefits. Thermal imaging technology can be used by commercial vehicle enforcement to screen vehicles as they approach a weigh station to determine if they may have flat tires and inoperable brakes. The vehicles do not have to be stopped at a weigh station to be screened. Kentucky currently has three stations outfitted with thermal imaging technology. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the benefits of using the thermal imaging cameras to …
Methodology Update For Estimating Volume To Service Flow Ratio, Mei Chen, Xu Zhang
Methodology Update For Estimating Volume To Service Flow Ratio, Mei Chen, Xu Zhang
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Volume/service flow ratio (VSF) is calculated by the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) software as an indicator of peak hour congestion. It is an essential input to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) key planning applications, such as highway adequacy rating. After the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reassessed the HPMS, the standalone HPMS software was no longer supported. This conclusion was based on the 2000 Highway Capacity Manual (HCM2000). As a result, the peak capacity and VSF estimates based on the submittal file are no longer available to KYTC. The calculation of VSF ratios requires AADT, K factor, directional factor, and …

Viscoelastic, Fatigue Damage, And Permanent Deformation Characterization Of High Rap Bituminous Mixtures Using Fine Aggregate Matrix (Fam), Hesamaddin Nabizadeh
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Performance characteristics of bituminous mixtures play the most influential role in designing flexible pavement. These asphaltic mixtures can be considered as heterogeneous mixtures which composed of two primary components: fine aggregate matrix (FAM) phase and aggregate phase. The FAM phase acts as a critical phase in evaluating the performance characteristics including viscoelastic, fatigue damage, and permanent deformation characteristics of entire asphalt mixtures. This study evaluates the viscoelastic, fatigue damage and permanent deformation characteristics of bituminous mixtures containing 65% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) by performing oscillatory torsional shear tests of cylindrical bars of FAM using a dynamic mechanical analyzer. Moreover, this …

Effects Of Sediments On Bmps For Highway Runoff Control, Matthew Garder
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Numerous studies conducted on highway stormwater runoff and its control with Best Management Practices (BMPs) indicate that sediment is the major pollutant that affects performance and longevity of BMPs. Currently, there are several knowledge gaps related to the effects of sediments on highway BMPs: a) how much sediment will be generated by a construction site by a section of highway with its surrounding watershed under different conditions; b) how sediment is intercepted by different BMPs with or without pretreatment sections; and c) what are the effects of these sediments on BMPs’ hydraulic behavior, longevity, and pollutants removal or release. The …
