International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The anchored quay walls or bulkheads are commonly used in coastal areas. Previous studies on the seismic behavior of these quay walls have shown a significant effect of the liquefaction on the performance of the walls. Considerable length of an anchored sheet pile wall in Rajaii port, Iran, has been embedded in liquefiable sand. This study tries to clarify failure mechanism of the wall during earthquake and to identify more effective zone for improvement of the wall stability. Numerical modeling by DIANA software and physical modeling by shake table were presented. Results show that the main reason for extensive deformation …

The building is a brick structure with three floors and a basement. Foundations are made out of massive stone blocks on the clay. …
Stabilization Of Existing Sheet Pile Cell In The Ohio River, David W. Bird
Stabilization Of Existing Sheet Pile Cell In The Ohio River, David W. Bird
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
An existing 40 foot diameter sheet pile cell (cell) was used to support a dry fly ash loading platform at an electrical power generating facility on the Ohio River. The cell was designed and constructed in 1986 for support of a coal barge unloading crane but was never put into service. The cell has leaned riverward several inches in the years after construction. Stability analysis indicated a less than adequate overturning factor of safety without any additional loads. The addition of the loading platform could result in an overturning failure. A stabilizing system which provided a horizontal stabilizing force of …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
After 1990s' earthquakes in Japan, lateral flow of liquefiable slopes became a serious concern of engineers. Espisally Kobe earthquake (1995) in which high subsidence of river levee as a result of liquefied sand lateral flow was observed, become a turning point in geotechnical engineering approach in dealing with this phenomena. From that time many different kinds of mitigation measures for preventing or at least controlling the extent of lateral flow have been proposed. Improving soil by deep mixing columns is one of the common methods of soil improvement that can also be used for controlling the consequences of liquefied sand …

Foundation Treatment Of Embankment Dams With Combination Of Consolidation And Compaction Groutings, Fardin Jafarzadeh, Amir Akbari Garakani
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Treatment of soft or weak foundation in a rockfill dam is of importance due to being susceptible to the large settlements, which may cause the dam body subjected to undesirable deformations and even, catastrophic failures. In this paper the stress- strain behavior of an under construction 58 m embankment dam in North-West of Iran, namely Gerdebin dam, and its soft and weak alluvial thick foundation has been assessed numerically. The effect of combination of consolidation and compaction grouting of the basement (as a remediation method) on the dam deformations and stress levels, is investigated. For this purpose, a finite difference …

TOOBA deep excavation project was conducted in a densely developed area in the North West of Tehran, capital of Iran, to provide space for 4 basement levels for multiple buildings around the already functional TOOBA tower. TOOBA tower is located in the northern leg of the excavation boundary in a way that the northern side of the building abuts the excavation edge. Hence, this project involved excavation on 3 sides of the roughly rectangular plan of TOOBA tower to the depth of 16.5 meters below its foundation level. The necessity for constraining the deformations of the tower commended the construction …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The use of byproducts of industrial materials is one the most interesting areas in geotechnical engineering in recent years. Microsilica is one of these harmful byproducts that obtained from silicon or silicon alloy metal factories. On the other hand, silty soils are not considered as suitable soils due to their low strength characteristics. In this research, the effects of lime and microsilica on stabilization of silty bed soil of a region of Karaj railway are investigated and its efficiency as a subgrade material is evaluated. To determine the best combination of the stabilizer, various contents of lime and microsilica are …

A typical top-down deep excavation project in Shanghai was carefully monitored during the construction process. This case history was back-analysed with a complex 3D FEM numerical model in ABAQUS to investigate the influence of different modelling procedures. The model considered the detailed construction procedures and structural information. The calculations included the small-strain stiffness of the soil and thermal shrinkage of the concrete beams and slabs. The small-strain stiffness is modelled with a multi-surface soil model developed at Oxford which has been implemented into ABAQUS. The diaphragm wall was modelled as an anisotropic linear elastic material to represent the effect of …

Addicks and Barker Dams are two flood risk management structures owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and recently classified as extremely high risk. These dams were built in the 1940’s in west Houston, Texas, upstream of a densely populated metropolitan area. The dams consist of 11 and 13 miles of rolled earth embankments, outlet structures with five barrel conduits, and uncontrolled spillways at both ends of both dams. The original design of both dams provided for four of the five outlet conduit barrels to be ungated, permitting a combined uncontrolled discharge from both dams of …
Remediation Of Distressed Frozen Earth Cofferdams, Joseph A. Sopko, Robert Chamberland
Remediation Of Distressed Frozen Earth Cofferdams, Joseph A. Sopko, Robert Chamberland
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Artificial Ground Freezing was used to provide temporary earth support and groundwater control for a complex system of three frozen earth cofferdams for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District’s Harbor Siphons Project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Site geometry and frozen earth structural design precluded construction of one large excavation, requiring the component system of the tangential cofferdams. High groundwater velocity prevented the formation of the frozen earth walls during various stages of the project. Remedial methods including external dewatering, permeation grouting, jet grouting, timber shoring and sheet piling were attempted to complete the project. Ultimately a more aggressive ground freezing program was …
Some Remarks On The Influence Of Deep Excavations On Neighbouring Buildings, Cătălin Căpraru, Anton Chirică
Some Remarks On The Influence Of Deep Excavations On Neighbouring Buildings, Cătălin Căpraru, Anton Chirică
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Increasing density of urban areas leads to building high-rise buildings with deep foundations, enabling their basements for car parking and facilities. Increasing depth of the foundation of these buildings increases also the need for more rigid earth retaining systems. Thus, generally, due to the importance of the neighboring buildings, great care has to be taken in the design process of the retaining structure and the support system of deep excavation in densely built urban areas. The paper summarizes a parametric study on a geotechnical model of a deep excavation, proper to Bucharest subsoil, Romania. The analysis of the excavation was …

A Case Study On The Use Of Flexible Earth Retaining Structure In Instable Slopes, H. Turan Durgunoglu, Ahmet Sahin, Onder Akcakal
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Recently new highway, motorway and railway projects take place in many developing countries within the aggressive infrastructure investment programme of governments. In rugged topography, engineers face the challenging problems of designing safe and cost effective cuts and fills for these projects especially under seismic loading and marginal stability conditions. Overall stability mechanism and safety of the cut generally controls the design decisions for the relevant section. In addition, because of the construction width limitations, in some mechanically stabilized earth wall projects sufficient width to accommodate the strip lengths of the retaining system cannot be provided. To eliminate all these problems, …

Mississippi River Road Gabion Wall/Slope Stabilization, W. Ken Beck, Lok M. Sharma
Mississippi River Road Gabion Wall/Slope Stabilization, W. Ken Beck, Lok M. Sharma
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Lee County widened Mississippi River Road north of the Keokuk, Iowa in the early 1990s, removing material from the toe of slopes along the alignment. Gabion walls were constructed to provide grade separation. Significant precipitation occurred in the spring of 2010, and two (2) wall sections (about 100 feet each in length) failed. Based on our site exploration and instrumentation monitoring data, the gabion wall sections appeared to fail due to additional lateral load from a soil mass sliding on top of the shale bedrock and a buildup of high ground water levels. To support the additional load of the …

Remediation Of A Slope Failure Above Retaining Wall Under Construction, Miroslav Cerny, Lubos Hrustinec
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In practice is for various reasons very difficult to assume a real sliding failure on the slip surface, which can be created from more parts (straight and curved) with different local soil characteristics. Therefore is usually at classical methods of slope stability shear surface replaced, for example by a cylindrical surface for cohesive soils. An important factor affecting stability is also the effect of groundwater. In practice is just the influence of groundwater very often reason of landslides on natural slopes and cut slopes. Such landslide has happened in the case of construction the retaining wall on the highway D1 …

Case Study Of Landslides In Kabylia Region, Algeria, Sadaoui Omar, Sadaoui Samir, Bahar Ramdane
Case Study Of Landslides In Kabylia Region, Algeria, Sadaoui Omar, Sadaoui Samir, Bahar Ramdane
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Kabylia is mountainous and coastline region of Algeria. Every year, particularly in the winter, it is affected by landslides displacing an important volume of detritic materials, and causing damages to infrastructures, housing and public facilities. It takes place in geological formations that are particularly favourable to this type of movement, because of the heterogeneity of their facies and the impermeability of some layers. Experience shows that the main cause of the landslides in this region is the combination of several passive and active factors, as geology, morphology, hydrology, climate and anthropic activities. The exceptional rains of winter 2012 triggered a …

Highway Section Affected By Two Neighboring Landslides – Performance, Monitoring And Design Of Stabilization Measures, Vassilis Houssiadas, Eleni Sakoumpenta, Manolis Haralambakis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Two separate deep-seated, creeping landslides exist in close proximity in a mountainous area with highly heterogeneous geological and geotechnical conditions. The ground movements are measured at a depth greater than 50m and affect 65m-high G4 embankment and 240m-long S3 tunnel that are under traffic since 2004. The first landslide affecting the embankment initiated shortly after completion of construction in an area where the highway was realigned after an old, pre-existing unstable area was identified during the design. Tunnel S3, about 300m to the east of embankment G4, suffered from slope instability during construction. This was successfully dealt with and the …
