Shear Strength Evaluation Of An Erosional Soil System At Fourchon Beach, Jacques Pierre Boudreaux Jan 2012

Shear Strength Evaluation Of An Erosional Soil System At Fourchon Beach, Jacques Pierre Boudreaux

LSU Master's Theses

South Louisiana is vanishing. Subsidence due to relative sea level rise with erosion of weak wetland soils together produce devastating rates of land loss for this area. It is believed that high rates of erosion are due to weak strength properties of fine-grained sediments in the beaches, marshes, and other wetlands in coastal Louisiana. Wave action is known to initiate the movement of weak coastal soils in a manner that is related to the difference between the shear stresses applied by waves and the critical shear strength of erosional sediments. Direct shear tests were performed on samples obtained from the …

Estimation Of Gap Acceptance Parameters For Hcm 2010 Roundabout Capacity Model Applications, A. Gazzarri, Michael T. Martello, Antonio Pratelli, Reginald R. Souleyrette

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper deals with the field data observation and successive application of estimation procedures in order to estimate follow-up headway and critical headway at roundabouts. Average follow-up and average critical headway are two critical parameters in the new roundabout capacity model presented in the 2010 edition of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM). The HCM 2010 capacity model was developed as an exponential regression model with parameter estimates based on gap acceptance theory. Gap acceptance models are strongly affected by driver behaviour and local habits. Follow-up headways can be field measured, while critical headway cannot be obtained directly. The paper mainly …

Investigation Of The Effects Of Shrinkage, Creep, And Abrasion On Self-Consolidating Concrete And High Volume Fly Ash Concrete For Use In Transportation Related Infrastructure, Brian Timothy Tucker

Masters Theses

"Concrete specimens were fabricated for shrinkage, creep, and abrasion resistance testing. Variations of self-consolidating concrete (SCC), high volume fly ash concrete (HVFA), and conventional concrete were studied. The results were compared to previous similar testing programs and used to determine the adequacy of the materials for use in practice. These two concrete variations offer significant benefits when used as replacements to conventional concrete. Because of the respective properties of both types of concrete, both economic and environmental benefits are achieved with the use of both. The lower labor costs of SCC and the lower material cost of HVFA lead to …

Self-Consolidating Concrete For Infrastructure Elements Shear Characteristics, Eric B. Sells Jan 2012

Self-Consolidating Concrete For Infrastructure Elements Shear Characteristics, Eric B. Sells

Masters Theses

"Because of its unique ability to maintain high flow-ability and remain homogeneous, self-consolidating concrete (SCC) has the potential to significantly reduce the costs associated with civil infrastructure; however, the use of higher paste and lower coarse aggregate volumes than non-SCC concretes raises concerns about shear strength of SCC mixes. This research focused on the components that contribute to the concrete's ability to provide shear by aggregate interlock. Variables investigated by push-off tests included concrete compressive strength, coarse aggregate type , and volumetric content level of the coarse aggregate portion . Post-failure digital imaging software was used to confirm fresh concrete …

Recently, panels of several bridges have exhibited corrosion of the prestressing steel tendons causing concrete spalling at the edges of panels. Some of the exposed tendons are corroded to the point of rupture. The effect of factors, namely concrete side edge distance and concrete material type, on steel corrosion in chloride-contaminated reinforced concrete was investigated in this study. Wet-dry cycle tests and accelerated corrosion tests were carried out on sixty-three specimens designed with three different side edge distances and three different …

Hardened Mechanical Properties And Durability Performance Of Specialized Concretes, Kyle Richard Holman Jan 2012

Hardened Mechanical Properties And Durability Performance Of Specialized Concretes, Kyle Richard Holman

Masters Theses

"Concrete is one of the most produced and utilized materials in the world. Due to the labor intensive and time consuming nature of concrete construction, new and innovative concrete mixes are being explored. Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is one such method of improving the overall cost and time efficiency of concrete production. SCC is a highly flowable form of concrete. This characteristic drastically reduces the amount of labor and time needed to place the concrete. The highly flowable nature also allows for much easier placement in applications of highly congested reinforcement.

Another rising concern in today's construction industry is environmental responsibility. …

Energy Efficiency In Wastewater Treatment: Standards For Missouri Facilities, Samantha Lauren Markus Jan 2012

Energy Efficiency In Wastewater Treatment: Standards For Missouri Facilities, Samantha Lauren Markus

Masters Theses

"Traditionally, energy has been used to treat wastewater. As energy costs rise, so does the financial burden on communities with municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Determining energy efficiency of small to mid-sized plants is difficult because these plants are the least likely to have the resources to conduct an energy audit and the most likely to be overlooked in national models due to their small contribution to the national energy burden. Data was gathered via personal contact the WWTPs in Missouri and from this data metrics fro comparison were developed. The data was also compared to the predicted energy use …

Expansion Of Mortar Bars In The Presence Of Potassium Acetate Deicer , Gerald C. Anzalone Iii

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Carboxylate-based deicing and anti-icing chemicals became widely used in the mid 1990s, replacing more environmentally burdensome chemicals. Within a few years of their adoption, distress of portland cement concrete runways was reported by a few airports using the new chemicals. Distress manifested characteristics identical to that of alkali silica reactivity (ASR), but onset occurred early in the pavement’s operating life and with pavements thought to contain innocuous aggregate. The carboxylate-based deicing chemicals were suspected of exacerbating ASR-like expansion.

Innocuous, moderately, and highly reactive aggregates were tested using modified ASTM C1260 and ASTM C1567 procedures with soak solutions containing deicer solutions …

Probabilistic-Based Hurricane Risk Assessment And Mitigation Considering The Potential Impacts Of Climate Change , Sigridur Osk Bjarnadottir

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Studies are suggesting that hurricane hazard patterns (e.g. intensity and frequency) may change as a consequence of the changing global climate. As hurricane patterns change, it can be expected that hurricane damage risks and costs may change as a result. This indicates the necessity to develop hurricane risk assessment models that are capable of accounting for changing hurricane hazard patterns, and develop hurricane mitigation and climatic adaptation strategies. This thesis proposes a comprehensive hurricane risk assessment and mitigation strategies that account for a changing global climate and that has the ability of being adapted to various types of infrastructure including …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The rehabilitation of concrete structures, especially concrete bridge decks, is a major challenge for transportation agencies in the United States. Often, the most appropriate strategy to preserve or rehabilitate these structures is to provide some form of a protective coating or barrier. These surface treatments have typically been some form of polymer, asphalt, or low-permeability concrete, but the application of UHPC has shown promise for this application mainly due to its negligible permeability, but also as a result of its excellent mechanical properties, self-consolidating nature, rapid gain strength, and minimal creep and shrinkage characteristics. However, for widespread acceptance, durability and …

Information Integration And Management Through The Design And Construction Phases Of A Project Life Cycle, Christopher T. Brokaw Jan 2012

Information Integration And Management Through The Design And Construction Phases Of A Project Life Cycle, Christopher T. Brokaw

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Information management is a key aspect of successful construction projects. Having inaccurate measurements and conflicting data can lead to costly mistakes, and vague quantities can ruin estimates and schedules. Building information modeling (BIM) augments a 3D model with a wide variety of information, which reduces many sources of error and can detect conflicts before they occur. Because new technology is often more complex, it can be difficult to effectively integrate it with existing business practices.

In this paper, we will answer two questions: How can BIM add value to construction projects? and What lessons can be learned from other companies …
