Empirical Relationships Betweenload Test Data And Predicted Compression Capacity Of Augered Cast-In-Place Piles In Predominantly, Donald Mccarthy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Piles are used in areas were the loading from a superstructure exceeds the soil bearing capacity for usage of a shallow foundation. In Northwest Florida and along the Gulf Coast, ACIP piles are often utilized as foundation alternatives for multi-story condominium projects. Data from 25 compression load tests at 13 different project sites in Florida and Alabama were analyzed to determine their individual relationships between anticipated and determined compression load capacity. The anticipated capacity of the ACIP pile is routinely overestimated due to uncertainties involved with the process of estimating the compressive capacity and procedures of placing …

Lidar In Coastal Storm Surge Modeling: Modeling Linear Raised Features, David Coggin Jan 2008

Lidar In Coastal Storm Surge Modeling: Modeling Linear Raised Features, David Coggin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A method for extracting linear raised features from laser scanned altimetry (LiDAR) datasets is presented. The objective is to automate the method so that elements in a coastal storm surge simulation finite element mesh might have their edges aligned along vertical terrain features. Terrain features of interest are those that are high and long enough to form a hydrodynamic impediment while being narrow enough that the features might be straddled and not modeled if element edges are not purposely aligned. These features are commonly raised roadbeds but may occur due to other manmade alterations to the terrain or natural terrain. …

Nutrient Removal From Stormwater By Using Green Sorption Media, Fahim Hossain Jan 2008

Nutrient Removal From Stormwater By Using Green Sorption Media, Fahim Hossain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High nitrogen and phosphorus content in storm water runoff has affected groundwater, springs and surface water by impacting ecosystem integrity and human health. Nitrate may be toxic and can cause human health problem such as methemoglobinemia, liver damage and even cancers. Phosphorus may trigger the eutrophication issues in fresh water bodies, which could result in toxic algae and eventually endanger the source of drinking waters. Sorption media with mixes of some recycled materials, such as sawdust and tire crumb, combined with sand/silt and limestone, becomes appealing for nutrient removal in environmental management. This paper presented is a specific type of …

A Kinetics Study Of Selected Filtration Media For Nutrient Removal At Various Temperatures, Elizabeth Henderson Jan 2008

A Kinetics Study Of Selected Filtration Media For Nutrient Removal At Various Temperatures, Elizabeth Henderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years the nutrient levels of the Upper Floridan aquifer have been increasing (USGS, 2008). An example of this is found in Ocala, Florida where Silver Springs nitrate concentrations have risen from 0.5 mg/L in the 1960 s to approximately 1.0 mg/L in 2003 (Phelps, 2004). Because stormwater is a contributor to surficial and groundwater aquifer recharge, there is an increasing need for methods that decrease nitrogen and phosphorus levels. A laboratory column study was conducted to simulate a retention pond with saturated soil conditions. The objectives of the column studies reported in this thesis were to investigate the …

Rational Best-Value Model Based On Expected Performance, Magdy Abdelrahman, Tarek Zayed, Jay Hietpas, Ahmed Elwakil

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The best-value procurement strategy is gaining the interest of federal and state agencies. The strategy increases the value added to a project for each dollar added. A new concept of best value, that is, a rational and flexible model based on expected performance, is presented. The model's flexibility is obvious in the selection of parameters to be included in the contractor selection process and in the determination of their weights. The model's rationality will be achieved through relating all awarded scores to the agency's expected performance. The establishment of the best-value model relies on the past record of the contractor's …

Studies On Field Stabilization Methods To Prevent Surficial Slope Failures Of Earth Fill Dams, Venkata S. Dronamraju

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Surficial failures are occurring frequently on the slopes of earthfill dams which are predominantly rainfall induced. Desiccation cracks form on the slope surface during dry environment which accelerates infiltration during rainfall. Infiltration causes increase of pore water pressures and saturation of soil mass in top layer resulting in surficial failures. Numerous surficial failures occurred on the slope of earthfill dams maintained by The United States Army Corps. of Engineers. The current research is undertaken at the University of Texas at Arlington with an objective of exploring the best field stabilization method to mitigate these surficial failures. Two sites, Joe Pool Dam …

Erosion Function Apparatus, Ryan Larsen Jan 2008

Erosion Function Apparatus, Ryan Larsen

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Erosion Function Apparatus (EFA) test uses site-specific soil samples acquired via thin-walled tubes to generate the erosion rate and shear stress which is plotted to create an erosion plot. The information produced by the test can help an engineer accurately determine the depth of scour as a function of time for bridge design, and thereby determine the depth a foundation system should be constructed. During EFA testing, a data acquisition system records the velocity and amount of soil eroded. This data is used to calculate the Reynolds Number, friction factor, erosion rate, and shear stress. Once the data has …

Particle Motion On A Plane Slope Under Spilling Breaking Waves, Jennifer Nelson Jan 2008

Particle Motion On A Plane Slope Under Spilling Breaking Waves, Jennifer Nelson

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The experiments discussed in this paper involve the motion of discrete solid particles on a plane slope under spilling breaking wave conditions. Particle Image Velocimetry was used to capture images of seeder particles in water so the motion of the fluid particles and solid particles could be traced. The images produced from the experiments have two phases. Since the behavior of the water and the sediment particles must be studied individually, the two phases of the image must be separated. A series of functions in MATLAB allows the two-phase image to be separated into two images—one containing only the sediment …

Development Of Ballistic Limit Equations For Dual-Wall Spacecraft Shielding: A Concise History And Suggestions For Future Development, William P. Schonberg Jan 2008

Development Of Ballistic Limit Equations For Dual-Wall Spacecraft Shielding: A Concise History And Suggestions For Future Development, William P. Schonberg

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

All earth-orbiting spacecraft are susceptible to impacts by orbital debris particles, which can occur at extremely high speeds and can damage flight- and mission-critical systems. The traditional damage mitigating shield design for this threat consists of a “bumper” that is placed at a relatively small distance away from the main “inner wall” of the spacecraft. The performance of a hypervelocity impact shield is typically characterized by its ballistic limit equation, which is typically drawn as a line of demarcation between regions of rear-wall perforation and no perforation; when graphically represented, it is often referred to as a ballistic limit curve. …

Advantages and disadvantages of these various techniques are also presented and discussed. the Moon's mineralogy is highlighted, and suggestions are presented for materials that can be used …

Modeling The Fate Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In Sewage Treatment Plants, Craig D. Adams Jan 2008

Modeling The Fate Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In Sewage Treatment Plants, Craig D. Adams

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Chemical fate models can be used to estimate the transformation reactions and the partitioning behavior of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in sewage treatment plants (STPs). Modeling the fate of PPCPs in a STP requires parameters such as rate constants or partition coefficients that are often unique to a specific STP, and that may exhibit significant temporal variability. Chemical fate models provide both a valuable test of our understanding of the fundamental underlying mechanisms regarding the fate of PPCPs in STPs, as well as a means of providing both qualitative and quantitative estimates for PPCP removal. This paper is …

A Stabilized Rbf Collocation Scheme For Neumann Type Boundary Value Problems, Nicolas Ali Libre, Arezoo Emdadi, Edward J. Kansa, Mohammad Rahimian, Mohammad Shekarchi Jan 2008

A Stabilized Rbf Collocation Scheme For Neumann Type Boundary Value Problems, Nicolas Ali Libre, Arezoo Emdadi, Edward J. Kansa, Mohammad Rahimian, Mohammad Shekarchi

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) with Neumann boundary conditions (BCs) resulted from strong form collocation scheme are typically much poorer in accuracy compared to those with pure Dirichlet BCs. In this paper, we show numerically that the reason of the reduced accuracy is that Neumann BC requires the approximation of the spatial derivatives at Neumann boundaries which are significantly less accurate than approximation of main function. Therefore, we utilize boundary treatment schemes that based upon increasing the accuracy of spatial derivatives at boundaries. Increased accuracy of the spatial derivative approximation can be achieved by h-refmement reducing the …

Implications Of Future Heavier Trucks For Europe's Bridges, Colin C. Caprani, Bernard Enright, Eugene O'Brien Jan 2008

Implications Of Future Heavier Trucks For Europe's Bridges, Colin C. Caprani, Bernard Enright, Eugene O'Brien

Conference papers

European road freight transport has increased by 38% between 1995 and 2005 and this strong growth trajectory seems likely to continue into the future. To address this growth without compromising the competitativeness of European transport, some countries are contemplating the introduction of longer and heavier trucks, with up to 8 axles and gross weights of up to 60 t. This has the advantage of reducing the number of vehicles for a given volume or mass of freights, reducing labour, fuel and other costs. However, many roads authorities are concerned about the implications for Europe's bridge infrastructure. For bridge loading, it …

Crash History After Installation Of Traffic Signals (Warranted Vs. Unwarranted), Kenneth R. Agent, Eric R. Green Jan 2008

Crash History After Installation Of Traffic Signals (Warranted Vs. Unwarranted), Kenneth R. Agent, Eric R. Green

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this study was to determine the change in crash history at intersections after installation of a traffic signal. Signals installed based on the warrants from an engineering study resulted in a decrease in angle collisions with an increase in the less severe rear end collisions. At intersections where signal warrants were not met, there was a smaller decrease in angle collisions and a larger increase in rear end collisions. The removal of unwarranted traffic signals did not result in a crash problem. The analysis shows that the warrants given in the MUTCD should be followed when determining …
