The Impacts Of Congestion On Commercial Vehicle Tours Characteristics And Costs, Miguel A. Figliozzi Dec 2007

The Impacts Of Congestion On Commercial Vehicle Tours Characteristics And Costs, Miguel A. Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Congestion is a common phenomenon in all major cities of the world. Increased travel time and uncertainty brought about by congestion impacts the efficiency of logistics operations. Recent studies indicate that a significant proportion of commercial vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) and vehicle hours traveled (VHT) are generated by trip-chains or multi-stop tours. This paper presents research demonstrating the impact of congestion on multi-stop tours in urban areas. An analytical model, numerical experiments, and real-world tour data are used to understand the impact of congestion on tour characteristics, carriers? costs, VKT, and VHT. This research shows that travel time/distance between customer …

Analysis Of Freight Tours In A Congested Urban Area Using Disaggregated Data: Characteristics And Data Collection Challenges, Miguel Andres Figliozzi, Lynsey Kingdon, Andrea Wilkitzki

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Confidentiality issues are usually an insurmountable barrier that precludes the collection of detailed and complete freight data. However, when detailed disaggregated truck activity data is available, the analysis of commercial vehicle routes and trip chain structures can provide insightful information about urban commercial vehicle tours, travel patterns, and congestion levels. Where truck data is usually aggregated and cross-sectional, this research analyzes several months of detailed truck activity records in a congested urban area and thus contributes a level of investigation unavailable with aggregated data. To the best of the author's knowledge, there is no published research regarding the analysis of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Groundwater is an important natural resource for numerous human activities, accounting for more than 50% of the total water used in the United States. Groundwater is vulnerable to contamination by several organic and inorganic pollutants such as nitrate, heavy metals, and pesticides. Assessment of groundwater vulnerability aids in the management and protection of limited groundwater resources.

The focus of this thesis is to (1) statistically compare two groundwater vulnerability assessment models; modified DRASTIC (Acronym for Depth to water, net Recharge, Aquifer media, Soil media, Topography, Impact of vadose zone, and hydraulic Conductivity of aquifer) and ordinal logistic regression for NO …

Validation Of Adaptive Aeroelastic Finite Element Program For Two Dimensional Flow Past A Suspension Bridge Girder Section Using Unstructured Grids., Shanique Murray Dec 2007

Validation Of Adaptive Aeroelastic Finite Element Program For Two Dimensional Flow Past A Suspension Bridge Girder Section Using Unstructured Grids., Shanique Murray

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The flow around suspension bridge decks was traditionally investigated using wind tunnel experiments. Computer modeling, an alternative to wind tunnel testing is now being used to simulate the wind flow around a bridge cross section. This alternative is less expensive and takes less time compared to wind tunnel experiments. The motion of flow around a bridge deck is described by a set of partial differential equations called Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations. Flow features such as velocity, pressure and vorticity are predicted by solving these equations. These flow features are then used to compute flow parameters such as aerodynamic drag, lift and …

Performance Based Contracting And Improving The Current Contracting Process, Troy Berkland Dec 2007

Performance Based Contracting And Improving The Current Contracting Process, Troy Berkland

All Theses

The primary objective of the research described in this report was to suggest improvements to the maintenance contracting process currently utilized by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). A secondary research objective was to examine to what extent SCDOT could migrate more toward performance based, as opposed to method based, highway maintenance specifications.
A comprehensive literature review indicated some states had successfully implemented performance based specifications for a wide range of maintenance activities whereas others had not. Some states have adopted performance based specifications as part of a comprehensive asset management program whereby the contractor typically performs all routine …

A carbon footprint is term which refers to the net amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly or indirectly by human activities and is usually expressed in terms of metric tons of carbon dioxide. The Calvin community places a strong emphasis on practicing good stewardship, including stewardship of Creation. Reducing Calvin’s carbon footprint is crucial because carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas and contributes heavily to global climate change. In a previous portion of this project, the carbon footprint of Calvin College was calculated to be about 66,400 MTCE (Metric Tons Carbon dioxide Emitted). The goal of this portion …

The students of Calvin College’s Engineering 333 and Biology 354 classes were given the task of determining “What would it take to make Calvin College Carbon Neutral?” At first glance, it would not appear that classes on Advanced Thermal System Design and Investigations in Plant Ecology would have much in common. However, the biology and engineering students comprising these classes banded together to tackle the problem. Coming to a satisfactory conclusion would require: Creating an inventory of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and sequestration potential Coming up with detailed solutions to achieve Carbon Neutrality Working out a practical schedule to …

Shear Modulus Degradation Of Liquefying Sand: Quantification And Modeling, Peter A. Olsen Nov 2007

Shear Modulus Degradation Of Liquefying Sand: Quantification And Modeling, Peter A. Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

A major concern for geotechnical engineers is the ability to predict how a soil will react to large ground motions produced by earthquakes. Of all the different types of soil, liquefiable soils present some of the greatest challenges. The ability to quantify the degradation of a soil's shear modulus as it undergoes liquefaction would help engineers design more reliably and economically. This thesis uses ground motions recorded by an array of downhole accelerometers on Port Island, Japan, during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, to quantify the shear modulus of sand as it liquefies. It has been shown that the shear modulus …

Resilient Modulus Of Compacted Crushed Stone Aggregate Bases, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, Charlie Sun Nov 2007

Resilient Modulus Of Compacted Crushed Stone Aggregate Bases, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, Charlie Sun

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In recent years, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has recommended the use of resilient modulus for characterizing highway materials for pavement design. This recommendation evolved as result of a trend in pavement design of using mechanistic models. Although much progress has been made in recent years in developing mathematical, mechanistic pavement design models, results obtained from those models are only as good as the material parameters used in the models. Resilient modulus of aggregate bases is an important parameter in the mechanistic models. The main goal of this study was to establish a simple and efficient …

Effect Of Beam Splicing On Seismic Response Of Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames, Gary S. Prinz Nov 2007

Effect Of Beam Splicing On Seismic Response Of Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames, Gary S. Prinz

Theses and Dissertations

The deformation capacity of typical buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs) is limited by the rotation capacity of connecting regions. The rotation capacity of the connection region is limited by fracture of the gusset welds and yielding in the beams and columns. A different connection detail with beam-splices outside the gusset has been shown to increase connection rotation capacity when compared to typical connections, in a few component tests. This study expands upon the performed component tests, by analyzing the beam splice connection at the system level under directional dynamic loads. Finite element analysis and dynamic loads are used to analyze two …

Trajectory Shaping Of Surface-To-Surface Missile With Terminal Impact Angle Constraint, S. Subchan Nov 2007

Trajectory Shaping Of Surface-To-Surface Missile With Terminal Impact Angle Constraint, S. Subchan

Makara Journal of Technology

This paper presents trajectory shaping of a surface-to-surface missile attacking a fixed with terminal impact angle constraint. The missile must hit the target from above, subject to the missile dynamics and path constraints. The problem is reinterpreted using optimal control theory resulting in the formulation of minimum integrated altitude. The formulation entails nonlinear, two-dimensional missile flight dynamics, boundary conditions and path constraints. The generic shape of optimal trajectory is: level flight, climbing, diving; this combination of the three flight phases is called the bunt manoeuvre. The numerical solution of optimal control problem is solved by a direct collocation method. The …

Regression Model For Prioritization Of Corridors When Retiming Traffic Signals, Manjari G. Mittal

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Traffic signals are used by transportation engineers to safely and efficiently manage vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic on roadways. However, to maintain the effectiveness of traffic signals, traffic signals should be adjusted or retimed periodically to match the current traffic patterns. Traffic signal retiming is one of the most cost effective ways available to transportation engineers for reducing delays and mitigating congestion. A region may contain a large number of traffic signals all of which cannot be retimed at once due to limited availability of funds and other resources; only a subset of signals can be retimed at any given …
