Intercity Travel Demand : A Utility-Consistent Simultaneous Trip Generation And Mode Choice Model, Guilin Li Jan 2004

Intercity Travel Demand : A Utility-Consistent Simultaneous Trip Generation And Mode Choice Model, Guilin Li

Dissertations

An intercity travel decision includes a complex set of subdecisions, such as when to travel, where to travel, which mode to choose, and others. The main focus of this dissertation is to examine trip frequency and mode choice of intercity non-business travel.

The objective of this study is to understand intercity travel behavior using disaggregate models. The proposed conceptual framework for intercity travel behavior leads to a nested logit/continuous choice model that is rigorously linked to the utility maximization theory. Compared to a traditional intercity travel demand model, the proposed model is utility consistent in that trip generation and mode …

The Use Of A Water Quality Model To Evaluate The Impacts Of Combined Sewer Overflows On The Lower Hudson River, Wen-Pin Shu Jan 2004

The Use Of A Water Quality Model To Evaluate The Impacts Of Combined Sewer Overflows On The Lower Hudson River, Wen-Pin Shu

Dissertations

CSO discharges have long been recognized as a significant source of water pollution. While many sources of water pollution have been controlled over the past 20 years, CSOs continue to be a main environmental concern in several areas, especially in old cities. In the past, most CSO research focused on the CSO control processes, including floatables and suspended solids removal. Few studies have been conducted in the area of the impacts of CSO discharge on the receiving water quality. To achieve this purpose, a powerful water-modeling tool, WASP 6.1, is utilized in this study. The Lower Hudson River is selected …

A Conceptual Framework For Using Feedback Control Within Adaptive Traffic Control Systems, Renu Chhonkar Jan 2004

A Conceptual Framework For Using Feedback Control Within Adaptive Traffic Control Systems, Renu Chhonkar

Dissertations

Existing adaptive traffic control strategies lack an effective evaluation procedure to check the performance of the control plan after implementation. In the absence of an effective evaluation procedure, errors introduced in the system such as inaccurate estimates of arrival flows, are carried forward in time and reduce the efficiency of the traffic flow algorithms as they assess prevalent traffic conditions. It is evident that the feed-forward nature of these systems cannot accurately update the estimated quantities, especially during oversaturated conditions.

This research is an attempt to develop a conceptual framework for the application of feedback control within the basic operation …

Global Shear Wave Velocity Database For Probabilistic Assessment Of The Initiation Of Seismic-Soil Liquefaction, Robert Kayen, Raymond B. Seed, Robb E.S. Moss, Onder K. Cetin, Y. Tanaka, Kohji Tokimatsu Jan 2004

Global Shear Wave Velocity Database For Probabilistic Assessment Of The Initiation Of Seismic-Soil Liquefaction, Robert Kayen, Raymond B. Seed, Robb E.S. Moss, Onder K. Cetin, Y. Tanaka, Kohji Tokimatsu

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Engineering practitioners commonly use penetration-based methods (SPT & CPT) for assessment of seismic liquefaction triggering hazard. On the horizon, shear wave velocity (Vs) may offer engineers a third tool that is lower cost and provides more physically meaningful measurements. Development of the shear wave velocity liquefaction method has been hampered by a paucity of published velocity profiles; particularly in deeper soil deposits (>10m) and deposits subjected to high cyclic stress ratios (CSR > 0.3). A review of the literature reveals that most historic liquefaction sites fitting this depth and CSR criteria are located in Asia, though most of …

Potential Effects Of Long-Lead Hydrologic Predictability On Missouri River Main-Stem Reservoirs, Edwin P. Maurer, Dennis P. Lettenmaier Jan 2004

Potential Effects Of Long-Lead Hydrologic Predictability On Missouri River Main-Stem Reservoirs, Edwin P. Maurer, Dennis P. Lettenmaier

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

Understanding the links between remote conditions, such as tropical sea surface temperatures, and regional climate has the potential to improve streamflow predictions, with associated economic benefits for reservoir operation. Better definition of land surface moisture states (soil moisture and snow water storage) at the beginning of the forecast period provides an additional source of streamflow predictability. The value of long-lead predictive skill added by climate forecast information and land surface moisture states in the Missouri River basin is examined. Forecasted flows were generated that represent predictability achievable through knowledge of climate, snow, and soil moisture states. For the current main-stem …

Endocrine-Disrupting Effects Of Cattle Feedlot Effluent On An Aquatic Sentinel Species, The Fathead Minnow, Edward Orlando, Alan Kolok, Gerry Binzcick, Jennifer Gates, Megan Horton, Christy Lambright, L. Earl Gray, Jr., Ana M. Soto, Louis J. Guilette, Jr. Jan 2004

Endocrine-Disrupting Effects Of Cattle Feedlot Effluent On An Aquatic Sentinel Species, The Fathead Minnow, Edward Orlando, Alan Kolok, Gerry Binzcick, Jennifer Gates, Megan Horton, Christy Lambright, L. Earl Gray, Jr., Ana M. Soto, Louis J. Guilette, Jr.

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Over the last decade, research has examined the endocrine-disrupting action of various environmental pollutants, including hormones, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants, in sewage treatment plant effluent. Responding to the growth of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and the pollutants present in their wastewater (e.g., nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and hormones), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed a new rule that tightens the regulation of CAFOs. In this study, we collected wild fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to feedlot effluent (FLE) and observed significant alterations in their reproductive biology. Male fish were demasculinized (having lower testicular testosterone synthesis, altered head morphometrics, and smaller …

Evaluating The Human Relevance Of Chemically Induced Animal Tumors, Samuel M. Cohen, James Klaunig, M. Elizabeth Meek, Richard N. Hill, Timothy Pastoor, Lois Lehman-Mckeeman, John Bucher, David G. Longfellow, Jennifer Seed, Vicki Dellarco, Penelope Fenner-Crisp, Dorothy Patton

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Defining the mode(s) of action by which chemicals induce tumors in laboratory animals has become a key to judgments about the relevance of such tumor data for human risk assessment. Frameworks for analyzing mode of action information appear in recent U.S. EPA and IPCS publications relating to cancer risk assessment. This FORUM paper emphasizes that mode of action analytical frameworks depend on both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of relevant data and information: (1) presenting key events in the animal mode of action, (2) developing a “concordance” table for side-by-side comparison of key events as defined in animal studies with comparable …

Enabling The Re-Engineering Of Material Purchasing In The Construction Industry By The Effective Use Of Information Technology, Alan V. Hore, Roger West

Conference papers

The current methods of ordering, delivering and invoicing of materials in the construction industry is enormously inefficient, with vast quantities of paperwork, duplication of effort, scanning, re-keying and resolving mismatches between invoices, delivery dockets and purchase orders. This paper sets out the results of a successful 2005 pilot project which achieved a three-way electronic match of the purchase order, delivery note and supplier invoice information. The paper goes on to describe the opportunities and challenges of introducing such a system in the Irish construction industry

Flexural Strengthening Of Bridge Piers Using Frp Composites, Tarek Alkhrdaji, Antonio Nanni Jan 2004

Flexural Strengthening Of Bridge Piers Using Frp Composites, Tarek Alkhrdaji, Antonio Nanni

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effectiveness of FRP jackets for increasing the shear capacity and the flexural ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) columns was demonstrated in many studies. However, for smaller axial loads, the contribution of FRP jackets to flexural strength is minimal. using FRP sheets in the direction of a column with end anchorage to improve its flexural capacity at the base is not easily achieved. This paper reports on a research project aimed at upgrading the flexural capacity of RC piers using near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP rods. Flexural strengthening and testing to failure of the piers were carried out on a bridge …

Retesting Of Liquefaction And Non-Liquefaction Case Histories In The Imperial Valley Using Cpt, Robb E.S. Moss, Brian D. Collins, Daniel H. Whang, Jonathan P. Stewart

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This report documents the retesting of liquefaction and non-liquefaction field case histories in the Imperial Valley with the cone penetration test (CPT). The River Park and Heber Road sites were originally tested using a mechanical cone following the 1979 Imperial Valley Earthquake (Bennett et al., 1981; Youd & Bennett, 1983). These two sites are rich in information because they have experienced several earthquakes in recent history, have been subjected to moderate levels of strong ground shaking, the liquefiable soils have appreciable fines content, and the sites contain a number of non-liquefied data points.

Recent liquefaction case histories databases (Moss et …

Predicting Freeway Crashes From Loop Detector Data By Matched Case-Control Logistic Regression, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Nizam Uddin, Anurag Pande, Fathy M. Abdalla, Liang Hsia

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Growing concern over traffic safety has led to research into prediction of freeway crashes in an advanced traffic management and information systems environment. A crash likelihood prediction model was developed by using real-time traffic flow variables (measured through a series of underground sensors) potentially associated with crash occurrence. The issues related to real-time application, including range of stations and time slice duration to be examined, were also addressed. The methodology used, matched case-control logistic regression, was adopted from epidemiological studies in which every crash is a case and corresponding noncrashes act as controls. The 5-min average occupancy observed at the …

Land For Maine's Future Program: Increasing The Return On A Sound Public Investment, Richard Barringer, Hugh Coxe, Jack Kartez, Catherine Reilly, Jonathan Rubin

Economics and Finance

Maine is nowhere a more special place than in the quality of its landscape and the traditions of its land use. Among the mo st privately-owned of all the states, Maine’s natural diversity and beauty combine with its traditions of resource stewardship, open access, and appreciation of nature to distinguish it in the public mind and national imagination. In recent decades, however, these traditions have come under assault from the forces of economic and social change; and the people of Maine have responded. In 1986, Governor Joseph Brennan’s Special Commission on Outdoor Recreation recognized the growing threats to Maine’s natur …

Heterotrophic Plate Count Bacteria—What Is Their Significance In Drinking Water?, Martin J. Allen, Stephen C. Edberg, Donald J. Reasoner

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

While the literature documents the universal occurrence of heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria in soils, foods, air, and all sources of water, there is a lingering question as to whether this group of organisms may signal an increased health risk when elevated populations are present in drinking water. This paper reviews the relevant literature on HPC bacteria in drinking water, the lack of clinical evidence that elevated populations or specific genera within the HPC flora pose an increased health risk to any segment of the population, and the appropriate uses of HPC data as a tool to monitor drinking water …

The Reactivity Of Dissolved Organic Matter For Disinfection By-Product Formation, Mehmet Kitis, Tanju Karanfil, James E. Kilduff Jan 2004

The Reactivity Of Dissolved Organic Matter For Disinfection By-Product Formation, Mehmet Kitis, Tanju Karanfil, James E. Kilduff

Publications

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in 6 water samples collected from 4 surface waters were fractionated using some or all of 5 physicochemical separation processes (activated carbon and XAD-8 batch adsorption, alum coagulation, ultrafiltration (UF), and XAD-8 column fractionation). Activated carbon, XAD-8 batch adsorption and alum coagulation processes fractionated DOM by preferentially removing high-SUVA components from solution. The XAD-8 column method fractionated DOM into hydrophobic and hydrophilic components while UF separated DOM into different size fractions. Over 40 DOM fractions, characterized using carbon-normalized (specific) ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), were obtained for each water. Trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA_9) formation after chlorination …

Accuracy And Interferences For Enzyme-Linked Immunoassay Tests For Atrazine, Craig D. Adams, Hua Jiang, Michael Mcguire, Nicole Graziano, Alan Roberson, Michelle Frey

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Atrazine is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the United States, therefore it is a regulatory concern and is extensively monitored in the environment, especially in drinking water. Because of the higher costs of gas chromatography (GC) methods, utility managers and regulators are considering the increased use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods for monitoring atrazine. an ELISA test kit was recently approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency. the research in this article points out potential biases and inaccuracies that may occur with such test kits. ELISA test kits for atrazine are typically precise (repeatable) but often …

Hydrogen Sulfide Flux Measurements And Dispersion Modeling From Constr, Sangho Eun Jan 2004

Hydrogen Sulfide Flux Measurements And Dispersion Modeling From Constr, Sangho Eun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Odor problems are a common complaint from residents living near landfills. Many compounds can cause malodorous conditions. However, hydrogen sulfide (h2s) has been identified as a principal odorous component from construction and demolition (c&d)debris landfills. Although several studies have reported the ambient concentrations of h2s near c&d landfills, few studies have quantified emission rates of h2s. The most widely used and proven technique for measuring gas emission rates from landfills is the flux chamber method. Typically the flux chamber is a cylindrical enclosure device with a spherical top which limits the gas emission area. Pure zero grade air is introduced …

Analysis Of Type And Severity Of Traffic Crashes At Signalized Intersections Using Tree-Based Regression And Ordered Probit Models, Joanne Marie Keller Jan 2004

Analysis Of Type And Severity Of Traffic Crashes At Signalized Intersections Using Tree-Based Regression And Ordered Probit Models, Joanne Marie Keller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have shown that intersections are among the most dangerous locations of a roadway network. Therefore, there is a need to understand the factors that contribute to traffic crashes at such locations. One approach is to model crash occurrences based on configuration, geometric characteristics and traffic. Instead of combining all variables and crash types to create a single statistical model, this analysis created several models that address the different factors that affect crashes, by type of collision as well as injury level, at signalized intersections. The first objective was to determine if there is a difference between important variables …

Investigation Of Ground Penetrating Radar For Detection Of Leaking Pipelines Under Roadway Pavements And Development Of Fiber-Wrapping Repair Technique, Pedro F. Suarez Jan 2004

Investigation Of Ground Penetrating Radar For Detection Of Leaking Pipelines Under Roadway Pavements And Development Of Fiber-Wrapping Repair Technique, Pedro F. Suarez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nowadays, it has become a common practice to observe urban roadways undergo severe distress characterized by substantial depressions. In some cases, these pavement depressions are caused by leakages in the connecting joints of sewage pipelines laid beneath the roadway pavement. Manual inspection of pipe leakages has become costly and complex since sewage pipes with relative small diameters do not allow inspection from inside and digging may be required. On the other hand, pipes with large diameters, in which inspection can be made from pipe interior, inspector can not remain inside of the pipe for long periods of time because of …

Biostability In Drinking Water Distribution Systems Study At Pilot-Scale, Michael Le Puil Jan 2004

Biostability In Drinking Water Distribution Systems Study At Pilot-Scale, Michael Le Puil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biostability and related issues (e.g. nitrification) were investigated for 18 months in 18 pilot distribution systems, under various water quality scenarios. This study specifically investigated the impact of steady-state water changes on HPC levels in chlorinated and chloraminated distribution systems. Chlorination was more effective than chloramination in reducing HPC levels (1-2 log difference). There was a rapid increase in HPC corresponding to the change in steady-state water quality, which was observed in all PDS. Modeling effort demonstrated that HPC levels reached a maximum within five days after water quality change and return to initial level ten days after the change. …

Effects Of The Soil Properties On The Maximum Dry Density Obtained Fro, Andres Arvelo Jan 2004

Effects Of The Soil Properties On The Maximum Dry Density Obtained Fro, Andres Arvelo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the construction of highways, airports, and other structures, the compaction of soils is needed to improve its strength. In 1933 Proctor developed a laboratory compaction test to determine the maximum dry density of compacted soils, which can be used for specifications of field compaction. The Compaction of soils is influenced by many factors, the most common are the moisture content, the soil type and the applied compaction energy. The objective of this research is the analysis of the maximum dry density values based on the soil classification and characterization. The method of choice in the determination of the maximum …

Predicting Air Quality Near Roadway Intersections Through The Applicat, Brian Kim Jan 2004

Predicting Air Quality Near Roadway Intersections Through The Applicat, Brian Kim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With substantial health and economic impacts attached to many highway-related projects, it has become imperative that the models used to assess air quality be as accurate as possible. The United States (US) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently promulgates the use of CAL3QHC to model concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) near roadway intersections. This model uses steady-state and macroscopic methods to model the physical phenomena (e.g., emission rates, atmospheric dispersion, etc.) occurring at intersections. These methods are not straightforward and unintuitive for the users. Therefore, this project investigated the possibility of developing a model that is theoretically more realistic and flexible …
