Piling-Induced Ground Motion: A Case Study Involving Hydrocarbon Exploitation Activities In The Niger Delta, Samuel U. Ejezie Apr 2004

Piling-Induced Ground Motion: A Case Study Involving Hydrocarbon Exploitation Activities In The Niger Delta, Samuel U. Ejezie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The damage potential of piling-induced vibrations in the humid tropical soils of southeastern Nigeria has been evaluated. The vibration propagation was characterized by a fairly high attenuation coefficient, as evidenced by a rapid decrease of velocity amplitude with distance from source. It was also observed that the bulk of the peak velocity amplitudes measured or calculated fell within the safe limit for structural safety and human tolerance. This therefore implied that the zone of highest damage probability at the case study site did not extend across property line as suspected prior to commencement of piling. In general, the findings and …

Failure Investigation Of A Fill Slope In Putrajaya, Malaysia, A. N. Hussein, A. H. Mustapha

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

On 6th of January 2001, a fill slope collapsed in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The failed slope was 25m in height. The failure caused the slope to pushed two reinforced earth walls and the recently completed jetty and boat docking facilities to collapse. The depth of the failure scar was about 2m with a failure length of about 50m. A failure investigation was then carried out to determine the causes of failure. A total of thirteen new boreholes, fifteen Mackintosh probes and three hand augers were carried out to determine the soil profile. A desk study of existing information and records, site …

Construction Of Diaphragm Wall Support Underground Car Park In Historical Area Of Bangkok, Narong Thasnanipan, Zaw Zaw Aye, Chanchai Submaneewong

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical aspects in construction of diaphragm-wall-support 2 level underground car park building, located in the historically and culturally significant area of Bangkok is presented in this paper. Results of the preliminary analyses showed that the deflection of the thin diaphragm wall of 0.60 m width would be large if it was to be fully cantilevered to fulfill the architectural and utility aspects of the car park structure. It was therefore decided to use buttress to minimize the diaphragm wall deflection. Performance of buttressed-support diaphragm wall is demonstrated based on the inclinometer monitoring results. Intensive modification of construction sequence in actual …

Railway Tunnelling In Frozen Ground On Bothniabana, S. Saarelainen, L. Korkiala-Tanttu, J. Viitala

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A new railway line was under construction in North-eastern Sweden, along the shoreline of the Gulf of Bothnia. The terrain consisted of Postglacial clay and silt valleys, and ridges of Precambrian bedrock, crossing the railway line. The railway level was about 20m below the ground surface. For the design of freezing, a freezing analysis was carried out to determine the pipeline depths and distances, to estimate the necessary time for freezing and to determine temperatures within the frozen zone. To estimate the deformations, displacements and safety level, a mechanical analysis of the tunnel cross-section was carried out. As input, the …

Effects Of Liquefaction On The Numerical Analysis Of A Single Pile-Soil Interaction During Earthquakes, Fusao Oka, Lu Chih-Wei, Zhang Feng Apr 2004

Effects Of Liquefaction On The Numerical Analysis Of A Single Pile-Soil Interaction During Earthquakes, Fusao Oka, Lu Chih-Wei, Zhang Feng

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Dynamic behavior of pile-foundations during earthquakes is important for the performance of many foundations. To clarify the mechanism of the soil-pile interaction, we have conducted a series of numerical analysis of a single pile foundation in the different types of a two-layer ground. Upper layer of the ground is composed of dense sand, reclaimed soils, medium dense sand or loose sand, and the lower layer of the ground is composed of clayey soils. In the liquefaction analysis, we have used a fully coupled effective stress analysis method with the cyclic elasto-plastic and elasto-viscoplastic constitutive models for sandy soils and clays. …

A new cable-stayed bridge for US Highway 17 is currently under construction over the Cooper River between Mount Pleasant and Charleston, South Carolina. This new bridge will replace two existing structures, the Silas Pearlman and the Grace Memorial Bridges. When completed, the new bridge will have a 1,546 feet span over the Cooper River, making this bridge the longest cable-stayed span in North America. The foundations for this replacement bridge are drilled shafts embedded within the Cooper Marl formation, which underlies the near surface lower coastal plain soil deposits. Depending on the location within the bridge structure, the drilled shafts …

A Half Century Of Tapered-Pile Usage At The John F. Kennedy International Airport, John S. Horvath, Thomas Trochalides Apr 2004

A Half Century Of Tapered-Pile Usage At The John F. Kennedy International Airport, John S. Horvath, Thomas Trochalides

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Tapered driven piles have been the deep foundation of choice ever since construction of and at the well-known John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) in New York City began in the late 1940s. Timber piles were used primarily for many decades but various brands of closed-end steel pipe piles have become preferred in recent years as engineers have sought ever-increasing allowable axial-compressive loads per pile. With currently available pile types it is now possible to routinely install tapered piles that have an allowable axial-compressive service-load capacity per pile in excess of 400 kips (1780 kN), with net ultimate axial-compressive geotechnical …

Fatigue Of Drill Pipes Used In Horizontal Directional Drilling, Feibai Ma Apr 2004

Fatigue Of Drill Pipes Used In Horizontal Directional Drilling, Feibai Ma

Doctoral Dissertations

Fatigue is the most common cause of mini-HDD drill rod failure. It can occur at stress levels far below the normal operating stress in most drill stem components. Fatigue failures occur because the drill rod, after it has been forced into a curved path, undergoes a cyclic bending stress oscillating from tension to compression in concert with the other stress components caused by torque, thrust, or pullback.

When a rod breaks underground, there is considerable extra cost caused by the delay in “fishing” out the broken rod as well as the cost of replacing the rod. On the other hand, …

Source Identification Of Ammonia Inputs To The Wastewater Treatment Holding Pond At International Paper Franklin Mill, Melissa Riddick Wolford Apr 2004

Source Identification Of Ammonia Inputs To The Wastewater Treatment Holding Pond At International Paper Franklin Mill, Melissa Riddick Wolford

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

While nitrogen is an essential nutrient in aquatic systems, elevated levels of nitrogen can be fatal to many aquatic organisms including fish and other organisms that are in the river. Elevated levels of ammonia have been recently (2001-2002) detected in the water released from a wastewater treatment system holding pond at International Paper Franklin, Virginia and are a concern for the receiving system. The elevated ammonia concentrations observed in previous years were not observed in 2003, due likely to increased precipitation and the occurrence of a major hurricane (Hurricane Isabel) during the sampling period that may have influenced the observations. …

Extension Of A Cross-Shore Beach Profile Model For Coarse Materials And Steep Slopes, Kentaro Hayashi Apr 2004

Extension Of A Cross-Shore Beach Profile Model For Coarse Materials And Steep Slopes, Kentaro Hayashi

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the present SBEACH model, the effective grain size can range from 0.13 to 1.0 mm. The grain size greatly influences three main processes of the model: fall velocity, sediment transport direction, and sediment transport rate. First, the theory of the fall velocity, which is called Hallermeier's formula in the SPM (1984), is replaced by the new theory in the CEM (2002). Second, the sediment transport direction is changed by two criteria. One was developed by Sunamura and Horikawa (1974). This theory includes the beach slope. The other was derived by Ahrens and Hands (2000). The effective grain size range …

Parallel Decomposition Procedures For Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems, Yusong Hu Apr 2004

Parallel Decomposition Procedures For Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems, Yusong Hu

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In practice, many large-scale linear programming problems are too large to be solved effectively due to the computer's speed and/or memory limitation, even though today's computers have many more capabilities than before. Algorithms are exploited to solve such large linear programming problems, either in the sequential or parallel computation environment. This study focuses on two parallel algorithms for solving large-scale linear programming problems efficiently.

The first parallel decomposition algorithm discussed in this study is from the theory problems in a special block-angular structure. The theory or the decomposition principle is first examined. Since the subproblems of a linear programming problem …

End Zone Reinforcement For Pretensioned Concrete Girders, Christopher Y. Tuan, Sherif A. Yehia, Nipon Jongpitaksseel, Maher K. Tadros

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, a literature review was conducted to establish the background of current specifications and to evaluate the applicability of various theories and methods for design of end zone reinforcement. Analytical methods reviewed in this paper include finite element analysis, strut-and-tie modeling, and the Gergely-Sozen equivalent beam method. Previous experimental work combined with work conducted as part of this study was used to correlate between various theoretical and experimental results. This paper illustrates that no single theoretical method adequately represents the complex behavior at the end of a pretensioned concrete member. A general semi-empirical design procedure is proposed here. …

Application Of Freeway Video Surveillance For Accident Investigation, Aemal Khattak, Yu Liu, Geza Pesti

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

This report presents information on Research Project Number Z820 (UNL Ref. No. 26-1118- 0057-001) titled “Application of Freeway Video Surveillance for Accident Investigation.” Traffic accident investigation requires detailed documentation of the accident scene, vehicles, and persons involved in the collision. To adequately document an accident scene, investigating officers accurately record various measurements (e.g., skid marks, dimensions of different highway geometric elements, etc.). Typically, a measuring tape and/or a total station (theodolite) are used to obtain the needed measurements. Advances in digital imaging and computer technology make it possible to develop cost-effective traffic accident investigation system alternatives that provide sufficient accuracy, …

Makara Journal of Technology

Analysis of Kancil’s Knuckle Prototype. The objective of this work is to execute strength analysis of knuckle, which is made from FCD 50, by using static analysis on maximum loading. This maximum loading is obtained from front axle loading calculation on particular operating condition. That is, vehicle is braking while cornering in down hill. From previous vehicle loading calculation, we get a number of loading values on different speed and deceleration. At the end, we get a value of speed and deceleration that guarantee the vehicle safety if it is braking while cornering in down hill. As comparison, loading calculation …

Pid Fuzzy Logic Controller System For Dc Motor Speed Control, H. Samsul Bachri M. Apr 2004

Pid Fuzzy Logic Controller System For Dc Motor Speed Control, H. Samsul Bachri M.

Makara Journal of Technology

PID Fuzzy Logic Controller System for DC Motor Speed Control. A good controller system must have resilience to disturbance and must be able to response quickly and accurately. Problem usually appears when PID controller system was built sensitively hence the system’s respon to the disturbance will yield big overshot/undershot then the possibility of oscillation to be happened is excelsior. When the controller system was built insensitively, the overshot/undershot will be small but the recovery time will be longer. Hybrid controller system could overcome those problems by combining PID control system with fuzzy logic. The main control of this system is …

Graded Channel Mosfet Simulation With S-Pisces 2b, Hartono Siswono Apr 2004

Graded Channel Mosfet Simulation With S-Pisces 2b, Hartono Siswono

Makara Journal of Technology

Graded Channel MOSFET simulation with S-Pisces 2B. Graded-Channel Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-effect- Transistor or GCMOSFET is being discussed in this paper. GCMOSFET technology has been developed to meet the growing demand for low power and high performance application. In this paper, it will be shown that, compared to ungraded MOSFET, the GCMOSFET device offers the advantage of significantly higher drive current. The higher drive current is achieved because the effecctive channel length of GCMOSFET is shorter than the ungraded MOSFET’s. From the simulation result with S-PISCES 2B and MATLAB, it can been shown that the ID from GCMOSFET is higher than the …

This paper will describe the construction of depth-structure map for case study of Kujung Formation, East Java …

Structural Health Monitoring And Damage Detection Using An Intelligent Parameter Varying (Ipv) Technique, Soheil Saadat, Mohammad N. Noori, Gregory D. Buckner, Tadatoshi Furukawa, Yoshiyuki Suzuki Mar 2004

Structural Health Monitoring And Damage Detection Using An Intelligent Parameter Varying (Ipv) Technique, Soheil Saadat, Mohammad N. Noori, Gregory D. Buckner, Tadatoshi Furukawa, Yoshiyuki Suzuki

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

Most structural health monitoring and damage detection strategies utilize dynamic response information to identify the existence, location, and magnitude of damage. Traditional model-based techniques seek to identify parametric changes in a linear dynamic model, while non-model-based techniques focus on changes in the temporal and frequency characteristics of the system response. Because restoring forces in base-excited structures can exhibit highly non-linear characteristics, non-linear model-based approaches may be better suited for reliable health monitoring and damage detection. This paper presents the application of a novel intelligent parameter varying (IPV) modeling and system identification technique, developed by the authors, to detect damage in …

Floodplain Risk Analysis Using Flood Probability And Annual Exceedance Probability Maps, Christopher M. Smemoe Mar 2004

Floodplain Risk Analysis Using Flood Probability And Annual Exceedance Probability Maps, Christopher M. Smemoe

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents two approaches to determining the effects of natural variability and model uncertainty on the extents of computed floodplain boundaries. The first approach represents the floodplain boundary as a spatial map of flood probabilities -- with values between 0 and 100%. Instead of representing the floodplain boundary at a certain recurrence interval as a single line, this approach creates a spatial map that shows the probability of flooding at each point in the floodplain. This flood probability map is a useful tool for visualizing the uncertainty of a floodplain boundary. However, engineers are still required to determine a …

Full-Scale Lateral-Load Tests Of A 3x5 Pile Group In Soft Clays And Silts, Jeffrey L. Snyder

Theses and Dissertations

A series of static lateral load tests were conducted on a group of fifteen piles arranged in a 3x5 pattern. The piles were placed at a center-to-center spacing of 3.92 pile diameters. A single isolated pile was also tested for comparison to the group response. The subsurface profile consisted of cohesive layers of soft to medium consistency underlain by interbedded layers of sands and fine-grained soils. The piles were instrumented to measure pile-head deflection, rotation, and load, as well as strain versus pile depth.

Influence Of Consolidation And Interweaving On Compression Behavior Of Isotruss™ Structures, Steven Matthew Hansen Mar 2004

Influence Of Consolidation And Interweaving On Compression Behavior Of Isotruss™ Structures, Steven Matthew Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Composite IsoTruss™ structures incorporate intersecting longitudinal and helical members. At the intersections, the fiber tows can be interwoven to achieve mechanical interlocking for increased joint integrity. Interlocking introduces gaps and curvilinear fiber paths similar to the crossovers in filament-wound structures, potentially facilitating local delamination within the members, thus reducing the strength and/or damage tolerance of the structure. Optimizing the interlocking pattern at the joints along with efficient consolidation minimizes these effects.

Joint specimens were fabricated using a specially designed machine. Specific tow intersection patterns at the joint were: 1) Completely encapsulating the longitudinal member with the tows of the helical …
