Liquefaction And Deformation Of Soils And Foundations Under Seismic Conditions, Ricardo Dobry
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A summary of significant developments in seismic liquefaction research and applications is presented for the period 1985-1995. It is concluded that rapid progress is being made, especially in evaluating ground deformation and straining and their effects on constructed facilities. Four topics illustrating these developments are selected and discussed in more detail.
Design And Behavior Of Tailings Dams Under Seismic Conditions, Jorge H. Troncoso
Design And Behavior Of Tailings Dams Under Seismic Conditions, Jorge H. Troncoso
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Seismic design of tailings dams in present times has to provide satisfactory solutions to fulfill environmental protection requirements and to assure proper behavior after closure and abandonment. The requirements to protect the environment include control of seepage and other forms of pollution of the air, waters and soils, under normal conditions, and also under the most extreme events which may be foreseen to occur. The worst possible form of pollution under such extreme conditions is a liquefaction failure involving breaching of the dam and flooding of the valleys downstream. The probability of occurrence of maximum events obviously increases with the …

Role Of In-Situ Testing In Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, M. Jamiolkowski, D.C. F. Lopresti, O. Pallara
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The available in situ testing techniques of special relevance in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering are subject to a synthetic review in the light of the general framework of soil stress-strain behavior. Especial attention is devoted to the recent innovations and current capabilities of in situ testing methods to assess the shear modulus G and damping ratio D. The determination of the undrained steady state shear strength via penetration and seismic tests is also discussed.
Simple Methods For The Seismic Response Of Piles Applied To Soil-Pile-Bridge Interaction, George Gazetas, George Mylonakis, Aspasia Nikolaou
Simple Methods For The Seismic Response Of Piles Applied To Soil-Pile-Bridge Interaction, George Gazetas, George Mylonakis, Aspasia Nikolaou
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A multi-step procedure is outlined for a complete seismic soil-pile-structure interaction analysis, within the format of kinematic and inertial decomposition. Vertical S-wave propagation is considered and the pile-to-pile interplay is treated with sufficient rigor. The method has been implemented for the seismic analysis of bridge piers founded on piles in multilayered soil; a computer code (SBIAP) has been developed to this end. A parameter study (in both frequency and tune domains) illustrates the capability of the method to predict displacements and accelerations of the superstructure as well as bending moments and shear and axial forces in the piles. The importance …

Dynamic Soil Pressures On Vertical Walls, Anestis S. Veletsos, Adel H. Younan
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A summary is presented of recently contributed simple approximate solutions for the dynamic pressures and the associated forces induced by ground shaking on rigid vertical walls. The walls are presumed to be either straight or circular in plan and to retain a uniform viscoelastic soil stratum of constant thickness and infinite extent in the horizontal direction. Both the walls and the stratum are considered to be supported on a non-deformable base undergoing a space-invariant, uniform horizontal motion. The effects of both harmonic and earthquake-induced excitations are examined, and comprehensive numerical data ate presented which elucidate the underlying response mechanisms and …

Soil Amplification In Great Hanshin Earthquake, Takeji Kokusho, Kiyotaka Sato
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
During this earthquake, strong acceleration records were obtained in free fields in many sites in and around the Kobe city. Some of the recording sites consist of multi-level vertical arrays, which demonstrated very peculiar features of seismic amplification in reclaimed lands and Holocene and Pleistocene soil layers. Particularly it has been found that, when the max acceleration at the depth of 80-100m exceeds 200-300 cm/s2, the upper layer will not amplify the acceleration anymore except for the shallowest layer in most case.
Distribution Of Structural Damage In Nishinomiya City And The Eastward Suffered From The Great Hanshin (Hyogoken Nanbu) Earthquake Of January 16, 1995, Kensuke Baba
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A powerful earthquake was caused in the northern region of the Awajishima Island, Japan, on 16 January 1995, and many human lives, structures and facilities suffered fatal damage from the seismic motions in the Hanshin' (Osaka-Kobe) region. The epicenter was located 20 kilometers below the ground surface and the seismic magnitude was 7.2 on Japan Meteorological scale. The aftershocks have been observed in a slender zone oriented to the northeast and stretching to a northern limit on the west-east trending Arima-Takatsuki fault line, which is analogous to the geological area accompanied with the tectonic collapse (Fig. 1).

Three-Dimensional Cyclic Behaviour Of Interfaces, E. Evgin, K. Fakharian
Three-Dimensional Cyclic Behaviour Of Interfaces, E. Evgin, K. Fakharian
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A new apparatus is used to study the behavior of an interface between dry sand and a rough surface under three dimensional cyclic loading conditions. A simple shear type of soil container is utilized in the experiments to investigate the coupling effects of two orthogonal shear stresses acting on the interface. The significance of the results are discussed with reference to the behavior of axially-laterally loaded piles.

Dynamic Characteristics Of Comares Palace In The Alhambra, V. Cuellar, E. Kausel, J. L. Monte, J. M. Roesset, J. Valerio
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper describes the geotechnical investigations that have been conducted to characterize the static and dynamic properties of the ground, the foundation and the structure's material of the Comares tower in the Alhambra palace. The Gmax values of the different materials were determined using seismic refraction, P-wave transmission tomography, cross-hole and down-hole tests. To obtain the variation of the shear moduli with strain amplitude surface wave and cyclic horizontal plate loading tests were performed in several trenches excavated in the immediate neighborhood. The analysis of the structure response to M = 5 earthquakes recently recorded at the top and …

Modelling Of Cyclic Behavior Of Sand In Large Range Of Strain Amplitudes, P. Y. Hicher, M. Kordjani
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The aim of this paper is to show that it is possible to model the behavior of soils in a large range of strains (10-6 to 10-1), using an elastoplastic law with a unique set of parameters. A multimechanism law with a kinematic hardening was used to model the monotonous and cyclic behavior of sand.

Cyclic Testing Of Aggregates For Pavement Design, M. M. Zaman, Dar-Hao Chen, J. G. Laguros
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Two most commonly encountered aggregates that are used as subbases/bases of roadways in Oklahoma were selected and tested under cyclic loading to evaluate their Resilient Modulus (RM). Following the repeated triaxial RM testing, the specimens were subjected to the triaxial compression tests from which the parameters of cohesion (C), and friction angle (Φ) were obtained. A good statistical correlation was established between RM and C and Φ. The repeated triaxial RM testing procedure serves as a “conditioning” prior to the static triaxial compression and it simulates the loads imposed by the moving vehicle. The effects of conditioning on C and …
Nonlinear Cyclic Stress-Strain Relations Of Soils, K. Nakagawa, K. Soga
Nonlinear Cyclic Stress-Strain Relations Of Soils, K. Nakagawa, K. Soga
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A cyclic torsional shear testing system was developed to measure the dynamic properties of soils at a wide range of strain levels (10-4 ~ 1%). Use of proximity transducer and pneumatic actuator in a closed loop system enabled us to measure the deformation at very small strains. A new simple nonlinear model of G/Gmax = 1/(α+γβ) agreed well with the test results of various geologic materials. In this model, parameter a represents the strain at which the stiffness starts to decrease, and parameter α controls the rate of the stiffness degradation. Loose sands had larger α …

Subsequent Consolidation Of Clay Subjected To Undrained Cyclic Loading, Tej B. S. Pradhan, G. Imai, Y. Ueno, T. K. Dam
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper is mainly focused on two parts: (a) to clarify the mechanism of migration of excess pore water pressure in clay specimen and (b) subsequent consolidation behavior after the dissipation of excess pore water pressure accumulated due to undrained cyclic loading. A new technique to measure the pore pressure at the mid-height periphery of a triaxial specimen was developed. The effect of loading frequency and the stress level on the generation of excess pore pressure at the top, bottom and at mid-height of the specimen has been discussed. The variation of recompression index due to the dissipation of excess …
Random Displacement Modulus And Damping Determination, R. C. Chaney
Random Displacement Modulus And Damping Determination, R. C. Chaney
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Modulus and damping values were determined for both undisturbed and remolded silty sand specimens by cyclic triaxial methods utilizing both sinusoidal and random displacement stroke control. Remolded specimens were prepared at 3 different dry unit weights using a preparation technique that gave the same formation factor as the undisturbed specimen. Results indicated that the random displacement method tends to produce results which are similar to those obtained by the sinusoidal procedure at shearing strain levels less than 10-1 %. At shearing strain levels greater than 10-1 % the random displacement method gives lower modulus and higher damping ratio …
A New Method For Determining The Anisotropic Parameters Of Materials Under True Triaxial Cyclic Loading, Q. J. Yang, B. Shackel
A New Method For Determining The Anisotropic Parameters Of Materials Under True Triaxial Cyclic Loading, Q. J. Yang, B. Shackel
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
In this paper a new approach to solving the basic equations of elastic cross-anisotropic stress and strain relationships is presented. The uniqueness of the equations is demonstrated and the conditions for their use are easily controlled in the true triaxial test equipment available in the laboratory. By this approximate solution the four anisotropic parameters of cross-anisotropic materials can be obtained. In addition, so-called fuzzy logic weighting factors are introduced to assess the differences among the observed principal deformations of samples tested. A computer program ANISOLV has been written to calculate the formulated parameters. Some typical examples are given to demonstrate …
