Soil-Structure Interaction Effects On The Response Of Meloland Bridge, E. A. Maragakis, S. Vrontinos, B. M. Douglas, S. Abdel-Ghaffar
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A study related to the experimental data obtained from the full-scale tests of Meloland Road overcrossing is presented. The major objective of this study is to demonstrate that the soil structure interaction effects play a significant role in the dynamic response of the structure. Initially, the results from the static deformation of the bridge under the quick-release loads are presented. These results were obtained by applying a special integration technique on the experimental acceleration records. Then a preliminary analytical model of the bridge is fitted to the experimental data in order to evaluate the values of the soil-structure springs along …
Stochastic Response Of Lifeline To Spatial Variation Of Seismic Waves, Chin-Hsiung Loh
Stochastic Response Of Lifeline To Spatial Variation Of Seismic Waves, Chin-Hsiung Loh
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The spatial variation of seismic waves has an important effect on the seismic response of structures of extended length. Based on data collected from the SMART-1 array, the spatial variation of seismic waves can be examined. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of the spatial variation of seismic waves on a spatially distributed system. With the consideration of the soil amplification ratio between two sites and spatial variation of seismic waves, a ground deformation spectrum is developed from stochastic point of view. This spectrum can provide information useful in predicting maximum ground deformation. The seismic response …

Study On Dynamic Characteristics Of A Pile Group Foundation, Takuji Kobori, Kenji Miura, Masaaki Nakazawa, Katsuichiro Hijikata, Yuji Miyamoto, Takafumi Moroi, Yoshinao Kobayashi
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The earthquake response of a structure on group of piles is investigated. The test model, which is employed in this study, is a foundation on four piles. Three conditions are prepared for examination of the contact effects of the foundation bottom and the backfilling effects on dynamic characteristics of the foundation on the piles. Forced vibration tests are carried out for ascertaining the impedance functions as the inertial interaction, and earthquake observations for the earthquake input motion as the kinematic interaction. On the basis of the test and the observation results, the correlation analyses are executed for examining the applicability …

Blind prediction analyses and subsequent correlation studies of a 1/4-scale reinforced concrete containment model constructed at Lotung, Taiwan subject to forced vibration tests and actual earthquakes are evaluated with the objective of validating soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis methodologies commonly used in U.S. practice. The SSI methods used range from simple soil-spring representation to more complex finite-element methods and sub structuring techniques. Both forced vibration test (FVT) data and actual earthquake induced response data have been obtained for use in validating selected SSI analysis methodologies. Considering that for forced vibration tests only the stiffness and damping characteristics of the foundation are …
A Model For Predicting Liquefaction Induced Displacement, Peter M. Byrne
A Model For Predicting Liquefaction Induced Displacement, Peter M. Byrne
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
A simple model for predicting liquefaction induced displacement is presented. The method is based on a single-degree-of-freedom system that incorporates the post-liquefaction stress-strain response of sand. The key parameters are the residual strength and the limiting shear strain, and considerable data presently exists on these two parameters from correlation with SPT (N1)60 values. Based on this data, liquefaction induced displacements from the model are compared with both field and laboratory measurements. The model predictions are found to be in excellent agreement with the measurements and indicate that liquefaction induced displacements are very sensitive to the density or …

Effect Of Flange Restraint On Web Crippling Strength, Roger A. Laboube, Wei-Wen Yu, Bhavnesh H. Bhakta
CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
INTRODUCTION The web crippling limit states equations given in the AISI Specification were primarily developed based on the results in which the flange was not attached to the support beams. This may not accurately represent field practice, since flanges are typically fastened by bolts or welds to their support beam. Due to these fasteners, the Specification equations may be underestimating the web crippling strength of the member. Therefore, a pilot study was proposed to study the behavior of webs, and the load carrying capacity of the webs with restrained flanges.

Centrifugal Modeling Of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Kuo-Neng George Chang
Centrifugal Modeling Of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Kuo-Neng George Chang
Theses
There are between 2 to 3.5 million Underground Storage Tanks (UST) located through this nation. Most of these tanks store gasoline and fuel oil. Many tanks in fact are or will soon be leaking, thus making them one of the major sources of groundwater contamination in USA. The fate and transport of chemicals from the leaking USTs is estimated from mathematical models. A major difficulty in these modeling efforts has been a crucial lack of information concerning the constitutive relationships governing multiphase contaminant movement.
Centrifugal modeling is an alternative to mathematical modeling, which may give an insight to the problem …

Instability And Collapse Behavior Of A Seismic Structure, Franklin Y. Cheng, Jeng Fuh Ger
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The collapse behavior of a 22-story steel building during the September 19, 1985, Mexico earthquake is investigated by studying hysteretic behavior, ductility factors of individual structural components, and overall instability of the building. The hysteresis models for truss-type girders, bracing members, and box columns to be used in the inelastic analysis of this building are developed. A series of inelastic analyses have been performed for the building by using the multicomponent seismic input of actual Mexico City earthquake records. It was found that the structural response exceeds the original design ductility of this building because most girders in the building …

The Development Of A Concrete Interlocking Partition Walling Unit, Haldane L. Johnson
Graduate Student Work
This research aimed to develop a better method of erecting internal partition walls for the Jamaican housing industry. An interlocking concrete block wall unit was considered appropriate because it used local materials and required semi-skilled labor to erect.
A timber mold was made to manually produce the 4 x 4 x 8 inch block. The concrete mix used had a cement to aggregate ratio of 1:7.5 and a sand to gravel ratio of 1:2 and a water cement ratio of 0.753. The average compressive strength of the block determined after three days was 351.56 psi. This translates into an expected …

Precipitation And Inter-Event Dry Periods For Selected Areas Of Florida, Teresa Rae Lineback
Precipitation And Inter-Event Dry Periods For Selected Areas Of Florida, Teresa Rae Lineback
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The increase in the pollution of existing water bodies due to poor management of storwater runoff has demanded continuous re-evaluation of present design methods for stormwater management facilities. Current criteria used in determining water quality (treatment) volumes in pond design neglect antecedent conditions resulting from preceding rainfall. The inter-event dry period refers to that time period (hours) which occurs between rainfall events. The
minimum inter-event dry period used for pollution control design should be consistent with the time required for infiltration, chemical precipitation, sediment removal, and biological assimilation; as well as the period of time required to minimize the cumulative …
Design Curves For The Reuse Of Stormwater, Gregory Miller Harper
Design Curves For The Reuse Of Stormwater, Gregory Miller Harper
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The reuse of stormwater runoff is becoming an increasingly popular addition to stormwater management systems. The advantages include a reduction in pollution and volume discharges to surface waters, the return of runoff to the ground, and savings in the cost of using potable water. This research, by developing a relationship between the reuse volume (temporary storage volume), the rate at which stormwater is reused, and the percentage of annual surface runoff that is reused, provides a procedure in which to design stormwater reuse systems. The traditional design of pond temporary storage volume has been based on the consideration of water …

An Analysis Of The Parameters Affecting The Stabilization Rate Of Yard Waste Compost, Patricia G. Fleming
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
In recent times, municipalities have turned to yard waste composting in an effort to comply with mandated recycling and reduction laws aimed at extending existing landfill capacity. Composting is a biological process whereby decomposition of organic matter occurs under aerobic conditions, producing a stabilized humified material. The objective of the research was to analyze data gathered during pilot yard waste composting operations utilizing the windrow method. The following tasks were accomplished: temperature and oxygen profiles from daily monitoring data were examined and the effect these parameters had on stabilization was determined; stabilization time of varying yard waste matrices was compared …

Knowledge-Based Support For Management Of Concurrent, Multidisciplinary Design, Raymond E. Levitt, Yan Jin, Clive L. Dym
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Artificial intelligence (AI) applications to design have tended to focus on modeling and automating aspects of single discipline design tasks. Relatively little attention has thus far been devoted to representing the kinds of design 'metaknowledge' needed to manage the important interface issues that arise in concurrent design, that is, multidisciplinary design decision-making. This paper provides a view of the process and management of concurrent design and evaluates the potential of two AI approaches—blackboard architectures and co-operative distributed problem-solving (CDPS)—to model and support the concurrent design of complex artifacts. A discussion of the process of multidisciplinary design highlights elements of both …
Uplift Capacity Of Z-Purlins, Roger A. Laboube
Uplift Capacity Of Z-Purlins, Roger A. Laboube
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Roof systems constructed using cold-formed steel components, i.e., Z-shaped purlins and interconnected roof panels, have become a very popular form of construction. This roof system is used extensively for single-story commercial and industrial buildings in the United States. The popularity of cold-formed steel members is due in part to their superior gravity load strength-to-weight ratio; however, because of their relatively light weight, a cold-formed member is very susceptible to wind uplift loading. The design specification in the United States for cold-formed steel construction does not provide a comprehensive analytical solution to the problem of wind uplift strength of a cold-formed …
The Enhancemnt Of N-Heptane Vapor Incineration Using Ozone And Hydrogen Peroxide, Michael William Hewett
The Enhancemnt Of N-Heptane Vapor Incineration Using Ozone And Hydrogen Peroxide, Michael William Hewett
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Using a narrow bore quartz tube reactor set inside a three zone Lindburg furnace, a measured air stream with a known concentration of n-heptane was heated to temperatures between 637°C and 687°C. A separate measured air stream with known concentrations of ozone was injected just prior to the thermal zone of the reactor. The differences in heptane concentration entering and exiting the reactor under varying time, temperature, and ozone conditions were monitored with a gas chromatograph in an effort to generate kinetic data. The reactor was modeled as a first order plug flow reactor. The constants in the Arrhenius equation …

Calibration Of A Parametric-Stochastic Model, Zhida Song, L. Douglas James
Calibration Of A Parametric-Stochastic Model, Zhida Song, L. Douglas James
Reports
Conceptually, stochastic parametric modeling offers a powerful tool to select a scale for expressing catchment variability for hydrologic simulation and relating model parameters to catchment characteristics. Practically, success depends on having an efficient method for model calibration. The calibration of a stochastic model is much more difficult than a deterministic one because simulation shifts from using fixed parameters to simulate of flows as deterministic values to taking multiple combinations of paramter values randomly from distributions to simulate flows as stochastic variables. The proposed method calibrates the first two moments of each parameter distribution to represent the average and the variability …

Studies Related To Nutrients Entering Groundwater From The Heber Valley Sewer Farm And Dairies, Roland W. Jeppson, Joan Mclean, Calvin G. Clyde, Scott Korom
Reports
Foreword: This report includes the results from a two year study in the Heber Valley to determine amounts of nutrients that are entering the groundwaters of the Heber Valley, and might ultimately enter Deer Creek Reservoir. Since Deer Creek Reservoir in Heber Valley, Utah supplies approximately 65 percent of the water distributed to Salt Lake County, the maintenance of its quality is of considerable importance. To maintain the quality of this reservoir and limit its eutrophication "best management" practices for surface water have been implemented gradually during the past decade in Heber Valley. These practices have significantly improved the qualities …
Continuum Modeling Methodology For Dynamic Behavior Of Towers, Khaled A. Obeid
Continuum Modeling Methodology For Dynamic Behavior Of Towers, Khaled A. Obeid
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A very common problem in Civil Engineering is the analysis and design of lattice structures. These types of structures generally consist of repetitive sections and have been utilized in the erection of transmission and communication towers, space roof trusses, solar energy collectors, and space platforms. Since lattice structures consist of a significantly large number of members and subsequently a large number of nodes, the classical discrete technique of analysis can be very expensive even on today's modern computers. This study applies a rational approach which capitalizes on the repetitive nature of towers to develop the equivalent continuum model for the …
Micromechanics Of Granular Materials And Its Relation To Wave Velocity, Tarun K. Agarwal
Micromechanics Of Granular Materials And Its Relation To Wave Velocity, Tarun K. Agarwal
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The macro characters of the granular materials depend upon micromechanical parameters such as the void ratio, particle shape, contact force distribution, and initial state of the fabric of the assembly. Since it is difficult to evaluate these internal parameters from laboratory experiments, a macro measure is desired which depends directly on these internal parameters. One such measure has been shown to be dynamic shear modulus but it was incomplete in predicting directional changes in the internal parameters. Therefore, it is hypothesized here that the complete elastic moduli matrix will have more direct information about the internal parameters, especially the dynamic …
