Groundwater Restoration Following In-Situ Leach Mining Of Uranium, Omar A. Ruiz Lopez Nov 2016

Groundwater Restoration Following In-Situ Leach Mining Of Uranium, Omar A. Ruiz Lopez

Civil Engineering ETDs

From 1950 to the early 1980’s New Mexico played an important role in the production of uranium (U) for the nuclear power industry and the nation’s weapon programs. Though the U mining and milling industry in New Mexico is inactive at present, increased interest in nuclear energy as a CO2 free power source has led to proposals for renewed development of U resources. In particular, U mining projects have been proposed using both underground mining and in situ leach (ISL) mining. When feasible, ISL mining minimizes waste by eliminating; mine waste, mine dewatering, radiation exposure and the recovered U …

Understanding The Behavior Of Embankment Dams Under Blast Loading, Courtney L. Busch Nov 2016

Understanding The Behavior Of Embankment Dams Under Blast Loading, Courtney L. Busch

Civil Engineering ETDs

This purpose of this study is to investigate the deformation-induced stability of earthen embankment dams to explosive airblast loading. This study specifically investigated the effects of close-in explosive airblast loads on the downstream toe of a homogeneous earthen embankment dam composed of cohesive soils. Small-scale explosive airblast experiments were performed on cohesive soils to obtain an experimental data set with which to compare numerical analyses. Experimental measurements included crater geometry, ground vibration energy, and air overpressure from the blast events. Laboratory tests were conducted on the experiment soils to obtain engineering properties including shear strength and compressibility indices. Finite element …

E. Coli Removal By Pleurotus Ostreatus Mycofilter In Simulated Wet Environmental Pond, Savannah E. Martinez Oct 2016

E. Coli Removal By Pleurotus Ostreatus Mycofilter In Simulated Wet Environmental Pond, Savannah E. Martinez

Civil Engineering ETDs

Stormwater runoff has been referred to as the water quality issue of the day. Contamination of surface waters is an environmental concern for both human and ecosystem health. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, it is a common practice to pond stormwater runoff before it is released into the Rio Grande. Ponding stormwater works as a best management practice (BMP) to help remove floatable debris and contaminants. Mycofiltration is a BMP that has recently been introduced into the stormwater quality community. Mycofiltration is the use of fungal mycelium as a natural mitigation approach to stormwater pollution. Mycofiltration has been proven to reduce …

On Cross-Anisotropy Of Flexible Pavement Layer Materials For Improved Pavement Responses, Mesbah Ahmed Jun 2016

On Cross-Anisotropy Of Flexible Pavement Layer Materials For Improved Pavement Responses, Mesbah Ahmed

Civil Engineering ETDs

Pavement layer materials are typically assumed to be isotropic in determining pavement responses, such as stress and strain. The main benefit of the isotropic assumption is that stiffness defined by modulus of elasticity (E-value) is equal in all directions. In reality, stiffness along vertical and horizontal (i.e., and ) may vary due to density gradients in compacted layer materials caused by vertical compaction during construction. Therefore, pavement layer materials with different vertical and horizontal modulus (i.e., \u2260 ) are cross-anisotropic. Past studies have reported that degree of cross-anisotropy, ( ) ranges from 0.2 to 0.85 in Asphalt Concrete (AC) layers. …

Data-Driven Bayesian Method-Based Traffic Crash Driver Injury Severity Formulation, Analysis, And Inference, Cong Chen Feb 2016

Data-Driven Bayesian Method-Based Traffic Crash Driver Injury Severity Formulation, Analysis, And Inference, Cong Chen

Civil Engineering ETDs

Traffic crashes have resulted in significant cost to society in terms of life and economic losses, and comprehensive examination of crash injury outcome patterns is of practical importance. By inferring the parameters of interest from prior information and studied datasets, Bayesian models are efficient methods in data analysis with more accurate results, but their applications in traffic safety studies are still limited. By examining the driver injury severity patterns, this research is proposed to systematically examine the applicability of Bayesian methods in traffic crash driver injury severity prediction in traffic crashes. In this study, three types of Bayesian models are …

Modified Inverse First-Order Reliability Method (I-Form) For Predicting Extreme Sea States, Aubrey Celia Eckert-Gallup Sep 2015

Modified Inverse First-Order Reliability Method (I-Form) For Predicting Extreme Sea States, Aubrey Celia Eckert-Gallup

Civil Engineering ETDs

Environmental contours describing extreme sea states are generated as the input for numerical or physical model simulations as a part of the standard current practice for designing marine structures to survive extreme sea states. Such environmental contours are characterized by combinations of significant wave height (Hs) and energy period (Te) or peak period (Tp) values calculated for a given recurrence interval using a set of data based on hindcast simulations or buoy observations over a sufficient period of record. The use of the inverse first-order reliability method (I-FORM) is standard design practice for generating environmental contours. This thesis develops enhanced …

Analysis Of Coal Combustion By-Products Disposal Practices At The San Juan Mine: Hydrologic And Water Quality Issues, Bruce Thomson

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Coal Combustion By-Products (CCBs) are generated by the burning of coal for electric power generation and as waste streams from emissions control systems. They consist of bottom ash from the furnaces, fly ash from electrostatic precipitators, and flue gas desulfurization sludge from air pollution scrubbers. Depending on the characteristics of the coal, CCBs may contain high concentrations of metals or other constituents that present a threat to ground or surface water resources if not properly managed. This report describes results of an investigation of CCBs generated by a power plant in northwestern New Mexico. Coal Combustion By-Products from this plant …

Validation Of Geographically Based Surface Interpolation Methods For Adjusting Construction Cost Estimates By Project Location, Su Zhang Sep 2010

Validation Of Geographically Based Surface Interpolation Methods For Adjusting Construction Cost Estimates By Project Location, Su Zhang

Civil Engineering ETDs

In the construction industry, cost estimates are fundamental to the success of a construction project. Location factors are commonly used to adjust cost estimates by project location. However, not all locations have corresponding factors. Nowadays, the construction industry has employed a simple, proximity-based location factor interpolation method which is widely accepted and used. Under this method, for a location without adjustment factor, the factor of the geographically “nearest neighbor” will be selected. Although this approach was statistically substantiated by former research, it was still not sufficiently supported, considering that only one year’s RSMeans City Cost Index (CCI) dataset was tested. …

Validation Of Methods For Adjusting Construction Cost Estimates By Project Location, Adam Martinez

Civil Engineering ETDs

Location factors are used to adjust conceptual cost estimates by project location. Presently, the construction industry has adopted a simple, proximity-based interpolation method which uses the “nearest neighbor” location factor to estimate unknown location factors. Although this approach is widely accepted, its validity has not been statistically substantiated. This study assessed the current method of adjusting conceptual cost estimates by project location. An evaluation of 14 alternative spatial estimation methods was also conducted. These methods were based on different approaches for combining 4 criteria: proximity, state boundary, home value, and income. This study used the 2006 RSMeans city cost index …

Hydraulic Modeling Study To Determine Diversion Structure Impacts - Rio Grande At Albuquerque, New Mexico -, Jungseok Ho

Civil Engineering ETDs

The primary objective of this study is to develop and use physical and numerical modeling techniques to predict the hydraulic impact on the Rio Grande induced by the Albuquerque diversion structure and its operation. A 1:24 scale distorted movable bed model, constructed and tested to investigate the hydraulic performance of the diversion structure, provided measurements for validating the numerical models developed in this study. Crushed coal was substituted for the prototype sediment particles and a 6.5 times steeper channel bed slope were employed to obtain sediment transport model similitude.

The diversion structure consists of an overshot gate system that can …
