Probe Vehicle Data To Assess Workzone Safety, Thomas M. Brennan Jr., Jim Poturalski
Purdue Road School
Historically, work zone maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans have been deployed without a scalable and systematic means to assess congestion and make comparisons between modeled and actual queue lengths observed during construction. This session will discuss how commercial probe data can be used to estimate queue lengths and fuse that information with crash data.

Alternate Bidding History And Requirements, Tom Duncan, David Holtz
Alternate Bidding History And Requirements, Tom Duncan, David Holtz
Purdue Road School
On November 18, 2009 the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved the innovative contracting process of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) for alternate pavement bidding on multiple projects. This process involves only one set of plans with the choice to bid either Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP), or Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Pavement, or both typical pavement sections. A Present Worth (PW) cost was calculated for future maintenance costs of both pavement types using an established Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) Strategy. This PW cost was added to the respective pay items after the bids were opened, but the PW …

Pavement Management For Local Agencies: How To Do More With Less With The Three Legged Stool System, Blair Barnhardt
Purdue Road School
Pavement management is important for agencies to maintain their critical infrastructure. By using the core principles of asset management, pavement assessment, and candidate selection, an agency is able to address pavement distresses with routine maintenance and prevent good and fair roads from becoming bad roads. This presentation discusses the many ways agencies have successfully managed their way to an improved overall road network even during the most challenging times.

Collection of right-of-way (ROW) data for curb ramps and sidewalks to determine compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) can be a time consuming and labor intensive effort. To further complicate this, management and interpretation of the data, once collected, is an effort itself. This presentation will provide an example of how data was collected by DLZ Indiana, LLC for the City of Mishawaka. DLZ surveyed nearly 3,000 curb ramps and 250 miles of sidewalks in 2012 using Apple iPads and various software to manage the data. This presentation will document the parameters measured for curb ramps and sidewalks, …
